Flexible dynamic boundary microgrid operation considering network and load unbalances

Flexible microgrids with dynamic boundaries have recently been introduced in the literature. With the ability to reconfigure the topology of the microgrids dynamically through remotely controlled switches, flexible microgrids with dynamic boundaries can further improve the resiliency and energy efficiency of microgrids with distributed energy resources (DERs). This paper focuses on the optimal operation considering one of the predominant characteristics of microgrids and distribution systems – unbalanced networks and loads. In existing literature, balanced modeling of microgrids is more common due to its attractive simplicity. The three-phase power unbalance has not been considered as a constraint on the generation units in a microgrid. Further, negative sequence constraints have also been neglected. In this article, we propose a set of constraints that is specifically related to the capabilities of inverter interfaced resources to supply unbalanced current/power when the microgrid is islanded from the main distribution grid. We incorporate the new set of constraints into two optimization formulations leveraging two convex relaxations of the three-phase power flow equations: mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) and mixed-integer semidefinite programming (MISDP) that optimize the dispatch of controllable switches and DERs in the microgrid. The algorithms are then extended to networked microgrids with grid-forming sources. We test the algorithms on a realistic community microgrid model in Puerto Rico as well as standardized IEEE distribution test feeders. The testing results demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms. The MILP is fast and scalable, and the MISDP enforces the negative sequence voltage constraints.

Time-domain terahertz emission spectroscopy on van der Waals materials

Time-domain terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy provides a direct method to probe transient photo-currents by recording the emitted terahertz electric field. Although the basic principles of THz surface emission have been understood for more than 30 years, the constant progress in ultrafast laser science to ever shorter pulses, the development of new materials and enhanced sensitivity promote THz emission spectroscopy as a reliable method to gain insights into charge carrier dynamics with unprecedented precision. It provides a versatile tool to study ultrafast processes, such as plasmon-driven hot carriers, dynamics of Dirac fermions, interfacial charge transfer, coherent phonon emission and quantum beating, to name only a few. However, despite the rapidly growing body of research on van der Waals materials, especially in their low-dimensional limit, THz emission spectroscopy has only been applied to a limited extent in these material systems. In this prospective, we review time-domain THz emission spectroscopy as a complementary approach to probe ultrafast charge carrier dynamics and the material’s nonlinear response. After a description of the experimental method, we report on THz emission spectroscopy of bulk and 2D van der Waals materials with special focus on graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide layers.

A Mixed Integer Linear Programming-basedDistributed Energy Management for Three-phaseUnbalanced Active Distribution Network

A mixed integer linear programming (MILP)–baseddistributed energy management for three-phase unbalancedactive distribution network is proposed. Modern distributionnetworks have becoming more and more active with increasingdeployment of microgrids, distributed energy resources (DERs)as well as controllable loads. Considering various ownership andcontrol models of microgrids, DERs and controllable loads, adistributed energy management was formulated using the alternatingdirection method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm. ByADMM, the distribution management system (DMS) and theseactive components are coordinated through price signals, whichare adjusted according to the generation-load mismatch per nodeper phase. To enable resolution of the ADMM-based distributedoptimization using more accessible and popular MILP solver, different linearization techniques were proposed to linearize theaugmented Lagrangian terms and other nonlinear terms. Resultsof case studies on a three-phase active distribution network withthree microgrids and several DERs and controllable loads validatedthe effectiveness of proposed MILP-based distributed energymanagement. In addition, the capability of proposed method inmitigating phase power unbalance has been demonstrated.

X-ray diffraction and equation of state of the C–S–H room-temperature superconductor

X-ray diffraction indicates that the structure of the recently discovered carbonaceous sulfur hydride (C–S–H) room-temperature superconductor is derived from previously established van der Waals compounds found in the H 2 S–H 2 and CH 4 –H 2 systems. Crystals of the superconducting phase were produced by a photochemical synthesis technique, leading to the superconducting critical temperature T c of 288 K at 267 GPa. X-ray diffraction patterns measured from 124 to 178 GPa, within the pressure range of the superconducting phase, are consistent with an orthorhombic structure derived from the Al 2 Cu-type determined for (H 2 S) 2 H 2 and (CH 4 ) 2 H 2 that differs from those predicted and observed for the S–H system at these pressures. The formation and stability of the C–S–H compound can be understood in terms of the close similarity in effective volumes of the H 2 S and CH 4 components, and denser carbon-bearing S–H phases may form at higher pressures. Furthermore, the results are crucial for understanding the very high superconducting T c found in the C–S–H system at megabar pressures.

Providencia Island White Papers: Hawaii, USA: A Grid Planning Case Study for Providencia Island, Colombia

Special considerations exist for island grids seeking to smoothly integrate distributed energy resources (DERs), such as rooftop photovoltaics (PV), with an existing fossil fuel-based grid without compromising system stability and reliability. Hawaii, having successfully integrated nonconventional renewable energy sources for a hybrid electricity grid, may serve as a guide for technical specifications and interconnection policy. Island grid planners may seek to follow Hawaii's example by standardizing technical specifications of generators, particularly for advanced inverter components.

Scalability of Real-time Distribution Models

This work will focus on developing the capabilities and validating the models for a sub transmission network with multiple feeders and microgrids. To achieve this scale of Hardware-in-the-loop (HitL) simulation, it is necessary to federate and collaborate. The work aims to design the large-scale feeder models to allow federation with complementary testbeds in the future. The feeder would be designed to be reconfigurable to put the system into a variety of modes. Aggregators models will be included in each distribution network’s federate to take control actions and interact with the management systems. Lastly, the feeder model will support large scale resilience studies involving complex Distributed Energy Resources (DER) controls, microgrid studies and emulation of complex data flows in future grid architectures.

Automation for Distributed Energy Resources Risk Manager Using OSCAL

The risk management framework (RMF) provides a well-organized and thorough approach to diagnose information technology (IT) system threats, to gather required materials to comply with industry standards, and to document a plan for achieving authority to operate (ATO). ATO is given by the operating authority with the awareness of vulnerabilities that arise when operating the IT system. The primary goal of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL’s) distributed energy resource (DER) RM application is to provide a user-friendly interface and in-depth guidance for generating the authorization package for the authorizing official to review. In other words, the application satisfies steps 1 through 7 of the RMF process with a focus on DERs.

Distribution Feeder-Scale Fast Frequency Response via Optimal Coordination of Net-load Resources Part I: Solution Design

This work is the first of a two-part series that develops and experimentally demonstrates a first-of-its-kind hierarchical control solution for optimally dispatching thousands of deferrable loads and distributed energy resources (DERs) across a distribution feeder to provide fast frequency response (FFR) within 500 ms to the bulk power system. This approach rapidly coordinates resources online after a frequency event occurs, allowing fast-changing, behind-the-meter (BTM) resources to be incorporated and aggregate FFR power set points to be achieved more quickly and accurately than existing approaches. We also present a solution for determining the optimal amount of headroom to operate solar inverters with to minimize opportunity cost while ensuring the FFR response viability of a building with the inverter and deferrable loads. In Part I, we develop practical algorithms for fast, cost-based optimal dispatch at multiple aggregation scales (single building, multiple buildings, and full distribution feeder), establish their optimality, and demonstrate via simulation that they are faster than state-of-the-art, coordinated frequency response approaches. In Part II, the entire platform is implemented and experimentally verified using a unique power hardware-in-the-loop demonstration, including more than 100 powered loads and DERs connected to a real-world distribution network model and over 10,000 net-load resources dispatched.

An Information Theoretic Approach to Identify Dominant Voltage Influencers for Unbalanced Distribution Systems

Smart distribution grid with multiple renewable energy sources can experience random voltage fluctuations due to variable generation, which may result in voltage violations. Traditional voltage control algorithms are inadequate to handle fast voltage variations. Therefore, new dynamic control methods are being developed that can significantly benefit from the knowledge of dominant voltage influencer (DVI) nodes. DVI nodes for a particular node of interest refer to nodes that have a relatively high impact on the voltage fluctuations at that node. Conventional power flow-based algorithms to identify DVI nodes are computationally complex, which limits their use in real-time applications. This paper proposes a novel information theoretic voltage influencing score (VIS) that quantifies the voltage influencing capacity of nodes with DERs/active loads in a three phase unbalanced distribution system. VIS is then employed to rank the nodes and identify the DVI set. VIS is derived analytically in a computationally efficient manner and its efficacy to identify DVI nodes is validated using the IEEE 37-node test system. It is shown through experiments that KL divergence and Bhattacharyya distance are effective indicators of DVI nodes with an identifying accuracy of more than 90%. Additionally, the computation burden is also reduced by an order of 5, thus providing the foundation for efficient voltage control.

Evaluating Emissions Reductions from DERs in REopt Lite

Creating a clear business justification for an energy & water project is essential for developing projects by transforming data and analysis into a compelling story to secure management buy-in. This presentation provides an overview of how distributed energy resources (DERs) can provide cost savings, resilience benefits, and emissions reduction. Many technical and economic factors affect which distributed energy technologies can best meet site goals, and should be considered concurrently. With increasingly integrated and complex systems, back-of-the envelope calculations are no longer sufficient to determine distributed energy project potential. REopt Lite can be used to model emissions and evaluate the impact of DERs on reducing emissions.

Unsupervised Learning for Equitable DER Control: Preprint

In the context of managing distributed energy resources (DERs) within distribution networks (DNs), this work focuses on the task of developing local controllers. We propose an unsupervised learning framework to train functions that can closely approximate optimal power flow (OPF) solutions. The primary aim is to establish specific conditions under which these learned functions can collectively guide the network towards desired configurations asymptotically, leveraging an incremental control approach. The flexibility of the proposed methodology allows to integrate fairness-driven components into the cost function associated with the OPF problem. This addition seeks to mitigate power curtailment disparities among DERs, thereby promoting equitable power injections across the network. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, power flow simulations are conducted using the IEEE 37-bus feeder. The findings not only showcase the guaranteed system stability but also underscore its improved overall performance.

Optimal Coordination of Distributed Energy Resources Using Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient

Recent studies showed that reinforcement learning (RL) is a promising approach for coordination and control of distributed energy resources (DER) under uncertainties. Many existing RL approaches, including Q-learning and approximate dynamic programming, are based on lookup table methods, which become inefficient when the problem size is large and infeasible when continuous states and actions are involved. In addition, when modeling battery energy storage system (BESS), the loss of life is not reasonably considered into the decision-making process. This paper proposes an innovative deep RL method for DER coordination considering BESS degradation. The proposed deep RL is designed based on an adaptive actor-critic architecture and employs an off-policy deterministic policy gradient method for determining the dispatch operation that minimizes the operation cost and BESS life loss. Case studies were performed to validate the proposed method and demonstrate the effects of incorporating degradation models into control design.

Automating Component-Level Stress Measurements for Inverter Reliability Estimation

In the near future, grid operators are expected to regularly use advanced distributed energy resource (DER) functions, defined in IEEE 1547-2018, to perform a range of grid-support operations. Many of these functions adjust the active and reactive power of the device through commanded or autonomous operating modes which induce new stresses on the power electronics components. In this work, an experimental and theoretical framework is introduced which couples laboratory-measured component stress with advanced inverter functionality and derives a reduction in useful lifetime based on an applicable reliability model. Multiple DER devices were instrumented to calculate the additional component stress under multiple reactive power setpoints to estimate associated DER lifetime reductions. A clear increase in switch loss was demonstrated as a function of irradiance level and power factor. This is replicated in the system-level efficiency measurements, although magnitudes were different—suggesting other loss mechanisms exist. Using an approximate Arrhenius thermal model for the switches, the experimental data indicate a lifetime reduction of 1.5% when operating the inverter at 0.85 PF—compared to unity PF—assuming the DER failure mechanism thermally driven within the H-bridge. If other failure mechanisms are discovered for a set of power electronics devices, this testing and calculation framework can easily be tailored to those failure mechanisms.

Machine Learning-based False Data Injection Attack Detection and Localization in Power Grids

Cyberattacks on critical infrastructures can be catastrophic and bring nations to their knees. Therefore, detecting these attacks is crucial and challenging. This paper presents a novel approach for detecting and locating cyberattacks affecting an electrical power system. The adversary employs a man-in-the-middle technique to inject false data into the communication between distributed energy resources (DER) and Microgrid Controller (MGC) with the goal of disrupting power delivery. The approach for detection and localization is based on integrating multiple machine learning-based anomaly detection models that combine network traffic data and grid measurements. Experiments are performed to assess the method's performance using a hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulation testbed which includes Modbus TCP/IP communication. Power system topology and operating conditions are based on actual topology and real-world data provided by the Holy Cross Energy utility network. Results confirm that the method can be successfully employed for detecting and localizing cyberattacks.

High-Efficiency Modular SiC-based Power-Converter for Flexible-CHP Systems with Stability-Enhanced Grid-Support Functions

This project seeks to develop a modular, scalable MV power converter featuring stability-enhanced grid-support functions for future grid-interface applications in flexible combined heat and power (F-CHP) cogeneration plants, being fully compliant with the IEEE Standard 1547, category B—for operation in local areas with high aggregated distributed energy resource (DER) penetration, and also with the IEEE standard for the specification of microgrid controllers, namely IEEE Std 2030.7, with the goal to enable F-CHP systems for both microgrid and standalone applications. Further, the proposed converter will use a modular circuit topology, the MMC, which is scalable both in voltage and current by interconnecting power-cell building blocks, thus flexibly suiting the needs of F-CHP systems in the 1–20 MWe range. Furthermore, the use of 10 kV SiC MOSFET devices will minimize the number of power-cells needed to operate in 2–13.8 kV MV distribution systems, but more importantly, they will render feasible a power conversion efficiency > 98 %, and a power density > 10 kW/l. This is highly relevant given that these are two key performance metrics that will further increase the value of F-CHP systems by shortening the time required to recover their investment costs.

Probabilistic Deliverability Assessment of Distributed Energy Resources via Scenario-Based AC Optimal Power Flow

As electric grids decarbonize and distributed energy resources (DERs) become increasingly prevalent, interconnection assessments must evolve to reflect operational variability and control flexibility. This paper highlights key modeling limitations observed in practice and reviews approaches for modeling uncertainty. It then introduces a Probabilistic Deliverability Assessment (PDA) framework designed to complement and extend existing procedures. The framework integrates scenario-based AC optimal power flow (AC OPF), corrective dispatch, and optional multi-temporal constraints. Together, these form a structured methodology for quantifying DER utilization, deliverability, and reliability under uncertainty in load, generation, and topology. Outputs include interpretable metrics with confidence intervals that inform siting decisions and evaluate compliance with reliability thresholds across sampled operating conditions. A case study on Puerto Rico’s publicly available bulk power system model demonstrates the framework’s application using minimal input data, consistent with current interconnection practice. Across staged fossil generation retirements, the PDA identifies high-value DER sites and regions requiring additional reactive power support. Results are presented through mean dispatch signals, reliability metrics, and geospatial visualizations, demonstrating how the framework provides transparent, data-driven siting recommendations. The framework’s modular design supports incremental adoption within existing workflows, encouraging broader use of AC OPF in interconnection and planning contexts.
