CUORE: The first bolometric experiment at the ton scale for the search for neutrino-less double beta decay

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most massive bolometric experiment searching for neutrino-less double beta (0νββ) decay. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals (742 kg) arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Here, this paper will describe the CUORE experiment, including the cryostat, and present the detector performance during the first year of running. Additional detail will describe the effort made in improving the energy resolution in the 130 Te 0νββ decay region of interest (ROI) and the suppression of backgrounds. A description of work to lower the energy threshold in order to give CUORE the sensitivity to search for other rare events, such as dark matter, will also be provided.

A methodology for decay heat characterization in molten salt reactors

Accurate decay heat prediction in molten salt reactors (MSRs) faces dual challenges: complex operational uncertainties and the need for interpretable models compatible with engineering workflows. This work presents a hybrid machine learning and segmented polynomial methodology that addresses both requirements through three key innovations. First, a modular data architecture encodes MSR-specific operational parameters (power density: 1-100 W cm -3 , humidity: 0-0.1 wt %, air ingress: 0-0.1 mol %) with uncertainty-aware temporal discretization spanning 15 orders of magnitude. Second, region-optimized machine learning models achieve 92.3 % root mean square error (RMSE) reduction over conventional polynomials while maintaining physical interpretability through automated piecewise equation generation. Third, dual front-end interfaces accelerate safety analyses — a Jupyter environment enables researchers to explore 10,000+ parameter combinations via interactive widgets, while a Streamlit web application reduces design iteration cycles through production-grade visualization tools. Operational deployment demonstrates prediction times of only a couple hundred milliseconds for 10 4 years decay profiles, enabling real-time optimization of spent fuel container designs.

Excited states in semi-magic 82 Ge populated in the βn-decay of 83 Ga

For this work, the βn and β-decay of the neutron-rich 83 Ga isotopes produced in proton-induced fission of 238 U were studied at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory using on-line mass separation and the hybrid-3Hen neutron-γ detector array. Excited states in semi-magic 82 Ge populated in βn decay of 83 Ga were identified using neutron-γ coincidences. The measured relative population of excited states in 82 Ge is compared with a βn emission model, where the neutron emission model combines the strength distribution obtained from the shell-model calculations with the statistical Hauser-Feshbach model.

First observation of the decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 183 Hg and B(M 2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart

The decay of the 13/2 + isomeric state in 183 Hg was observed for the first time following the a decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 187 Pb produced in the 142 Nd( 50 Cr, 2p3n) reaction. Using $\alpha - \gamma$ delayed coincidence measurements, the half-life of this isomer was measured to be 290(30) μs. This isomer is proposed to deexcite by an unobserved low-energy M2 transition to the known 9/2 - member of a strongly prolate-deformed 7/2 - [514] band, followed by a 105-keV M1 transition to the bandhead. A lower limit of B(M2) >= 0.018 W.u. was deduced for the unobserved transition. The presumed retardation is proposed to be due to the notable shape change between the initial, nearly spherical, and the final, strongly deformed, states. A similar scenario is also considered for the 13/2 + isomer in 181 Hg, suggesting both are cases of shape isomers. The B(M2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart is discussed.

A search for the K + → μ - νe + e + decay

A search for the K + → μ - νe + e + decay, forbidden within the Standard Model by either lepton number or lepton flavour conservation depending on the flavour of the emitted neutrino, has been performed using the dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016--2018. An upper limit of 8.1×10 -11 is obtained for the decay branching fraction at 90% CL, improving by a factor of 250 over the previous search.

Elliptic flow of heavy-flavor decay electrons in Au+Au collisions at s NN = 27 and 54.4 GeV at RHIC

We report on new measurements of elliptic flow (v 2 ) of electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.8) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 27 and 54.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. Heavy-flavor decay electrons (eHF) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 54.4 GeV exhibit a non-zero v 2 in the transverse momentum (p T ) region of p T < 2 GeV/c with the magnitude comparable to that at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$=200 GeV. The measured e HF v 2 at 54.4 GeV is also consistent with the expectation of their parent charm hadron v 2 following number-of-constituent-quark scaling as other light and strange flavor hadrons at this energy. These suggest that charm quarks gain significant collectivity through the evolution of the QCD medium and may reach local thermal equilibrium in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$=54.4 GeV. The measured e HF v 2 in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 27 GeV is consistent with zero within large uncertainties. The energy dependence of v 2 for different flavor particles (π,Φ,D 0 /e HF ) shows an indication of quark mass hierarchy in reaching thermalization in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Search for the Higgs boson decays to a ρ 0 , ϕ, or K ⁎0 meson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

Three rare decay processes of the Higgs boson to a ρ(770) 0 , Φ(1020), or K ⁎ (892) 0 meson and a photon are searched for using $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Events are selected assuming the mesons decay into a pair of charged pions, a pair of charged kaons, or a charged kaon and pion, respectively. Depending on the Higgs boson production mode, different triggering and reconstruction techniques are adopted. The analyzed data sets correspond to integrated luminosities up to 138 fb -1 , depending on the reconstructed final state. After combining various data sets and categories, no significant excess above the background expectations is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson branching fractions into ρ(770) 0 $γ$, Φ(1020)$γ$, and K ⁎ (892) 0 are determined to be 3.7 x 10 -4 , 3.0 x 10 -4 , and 3.0 x 10 -4 , respectively. In case of the ρ(770) 0 $γ$ and Φ(1020)$γ$ channels, these are the most stringent experimental limits to date.

Angular analysis of the B 0 → K ⁎ (892) 0 μ + μ − decay in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A full set of optimized observables is measured in an angular analysis of the decay B 0 → K* (892) 0 μ + μ – using a sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140fb –1 . The analysis is performed in six bins of the squared invariant mass of the dimuon system, q 2 , over the range 1.1 < q 2 < 16 GeV 2 . The results are among the most precise experimental measurements of the angular observables for this decay and are compared to a variety of predictions based on the standard model. Some of these predictions exhibit tension with the measurements.

Vibrational Spin-Orbit Coupling Contributions to Excited State Decay of Ligand-to-Ligand Charge Transfer States

Controlling excited state relaxation processes is important in a variety of photochemical and photophysical processes, including the generation of ground and excited state spin polarization for quantum information science applications. Here, we address how specific static distortions – based on vibrational spin-orbit active modes at C2v symmetry determined by group theory – in a series of low-symmetry ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complexes enable direct spin-orbit coupling contributions to T1 → S0 excited state decay. These results are used to address spin-vibronic coupling contributions to T1 → S0 decay in a high-symmetry (tBu2bpy)Pt(S,S) (tBu2bpy = 4,4’-di-tert-butyl-2,2’-bipyridine and S,S = benzene-1,2-dithiolate) ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complex with effective C2v symmetry, where T1 relaxation is both spin- and orbitally forbidden due to the direct spin-orbit coupling matrix element being zero by symmetry. Low-frequency vibrations that involve a pyridine-pyridine twisting motion within the bpy ligand generate large ∂/∂Qi values that will contribute significantly to T1 → S0 relaxation. The work advances ligand design strategies for the generation of tailored T1 → S0 relaxation rates, which can be utilized to optimize the generation of electron spin polarization in radical-elaborated ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complexes.

Pathfinding quantum simulations of neutrinoless double- β decay

We present results from co-designed quantum simulations of the neutrinoless double- β decay of a simple nucleus in 1+1D quantum chromodynamics using IonQ’s Forte-generation trapped-ion quantum computers. Electrons, neutrinos, and up and down quarks are distributed across two lattice sites and mapped to 32 qubits, with an additional 4 qubits used for flag-based error mitigation. A four-fermion interaction is used to implement weak interactions, and lepton-number violation is induced by a neutrino Majorana mass. Quantum circuits that prepare the initial nucleus and time evolve with the Hamiltonian containing the strong and weak interactions are executed on IonQ Forte Enterprise. Enabled by tuned model parameters, lepton-number violation is observed in real time, providing a clear signal of neutrinoless double- β decay. This was made possible by co-designing the simulation to maximally utilize the all-to-all connectivity and native gate-set available on IonQ’s quantum computers. Quantum circuit compilation techniques and co-designed error-mitigation methods, informed from executing benchmarking circuits with up to 2,356 two-qubit gates, enabled observables to be extracted with high precision. We discuss the potential of future quantum simulations to provide yocto-second resolution of the reaction pathways in these, and other, nuclear processes.

Using Prompt Neutron Decay Constant Measurements to Obtain Additional Kinetics Information

Prompt neutron decay constant measurements are typically used to infer the prompt neutron lifetime in a chain-reacting system, but these measurements include much more information about the kinetics of the system. This work focuses specifically on the Rossi-α method of measuring the prompt neutron decay constant. The Rossi-α system of equations consists of five unknown parameters. With five unknowns and three equations, the system of equations solved by the Rossi-α measurement is under-determined. It has been postulated that a well posed problem can be formulated using independent measurement configurations on a single system. The external source strength, the effective delayed neutron fractions, and Diven’s parameter do not typically change for different configurations of a single experiment. If good detector geometry is chosen, the detector efficiency does not change for multiple measurements of a single experiment using Rossi-α measurements. By making these assumptions, there are only two unique variables. This knowledge can be used to solve for most of the unique parameters using two independent, unique Rossi-α measurements.

Kinetics of the luminescence decay of Fe{sup 2+} impurity centres in polycrystalline ZnSe upon excitation by an electron beam

The kinetics of the decay of the luminescence of Fe{sup 2+} ions is measured at nitrogen temperature in polycrystalline ZnSe excited by a short pulse of accelerated electrons. The time dependence of the luminescence intensity differs from the exponential one, observed upon excitation of luminescence by a short light pulse. The obtained nonexponential dependence is theoretically described. The explanation is based on the quenching effect of the excited state of the Fe{sup 2+} ion by free electrons of the volume charge of the current of accelerated electrons in the sample (Auger effect). It was shown that the relaxation of the volume charge after the electron-accelerating voltage is removed makes a significant contribution to the decay kinetics of the impurity luminescence. (paper)

nEXO: neutrinoless double beta decay search beyond 10 28 year half-life sensitivity

The nEXO neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay experiment is designed to use a time projection chamber and 5000 kg of isotopically enriched liquid xenon to search for the decay in 136 Xe. Progress in the detector design, paired with higher fidelity in its simulation and an advanced data analysis, based on the one used for the final results of EXO-200, produce a sensitivity prediction that exceeds the half-life of 10 28 years. Specifically, improvements have been made in the understanding of production of scintillation photons and charge as well as of their transport and reconstruction in the detector. The more detailed knowledge of the detector construction has been paired with more assays for trace radioactivity in different materials. In particular, the use of custom electroformed copper is now incorporated in the design, leading to a substantial reduction in backgrounds from the intrinsic radioactivity of detector materials. Furthermore, a number of assumptions from previous sensitivity projections have gained further support from interim work validating the nEXO experiment concept. Together these improvements and updates suggest that the nEXO experiment will reach a half-life sensitivity of 1.35 × 10 28 yr at 90% confidence level in 10 years of data taking, covering the parameter space associated with the inverted neutrino mass ordering, along with a significant portion of the parameter space for the normal ordering scenario, for almost all nuclear matrix elements. Furthermore, the effects of backgrounds deviating from the nominal values used for the projections are also illustrated, concluding that the nEXO design is robust against a number of imperfections of the model.

The nylon balloon for xenon loaded liquid scintillator in KamLAND-Zen 800 neutrinoless double-beta decay search experiment

The KamLAND-Zen 800 experiment is searching for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 136 Xe by using 136 Xe-loaded liquid scintillator. The liquid scintillator is enclosed inside a balloon made of thin, transparent, low-radioactivity film that we call Inner Balloon (IB). The IB, apart from guaranteeing the liquid containment, also allows to minimize the background from cosmogenic muon-spallation products and 8B solar neutrinos. Indeed these events could contribute to the total counts in the region of interest around the Q-value of the double-beta decay of 136 Xe. In this paper, we present an overview of the IB and describe the various steps of its commissioning minimizing the radioactive contaminations, from the material selection, to the fabrication of the balloon and its installation inside the KamLAND detector. Finally, we show the impact of the IB on the KamLAND background as measured by the KamLAND detector itself.

$Ξ$ 𝑐 → $Ξ$ form factors from lattice QCD with domain-wall quarks: A new piece in the puzzle of $Ξ^0_𝑐$ decay rates

We present a lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) determination of the vector and axial-vector form factors that describe the charm-baryon semileptonic decays Ξ 𝑐 → Ξ⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ . The calculation uses a domain-wall action for the up, down, and strange quarks, and an anisotropic clover action for the charm quark. We use four ensembles of gauge-field configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations, with lattice spacings between 0.111 and 0.073 fm and pion masses ranging from 420 to 230 MeV. We present Standard Model predictions for the decay rates and branching fractions of Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ$^−_𝑐$⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ and Ξ$^+_𝑐$ → Ξ$^0_𝑐$⁢ℓ + ⁢𝜈 ℓ for ℓ =𝑒, 𝜇. In particular, we obtain Γ⁡(Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝜈 𝑒 )/|𝑉 𝑐⁢𝑠 | 2 = 0.2515⁢(73) ps −1 and ℬ⁡(Ξ$^0_𝑐$ → Ξ − ⁢𝑒 +⁢ 𝜈 𝑒 ) = 3.58⁢(12)%. These values are higher than those predicted by a previous lattice calculation and substantially higher than the experimentally measured values, but consistent with expectations from approximate 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(3) flavor symmetry.
