Abstract for Joint Work Statement 5 (AGMT-1005) between National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company (EMRE) to Umbrella CRADA (AGMT-0922)

NETL and EMRE will focus on fundamental questions aimed at understanding the controlling factors on tight oil production flow paths and how those flow paths are impacted by the hydraulic fracturing fluids and processes. Key questions for the Parties to explore include the following: Are there geochemical reactions between hydrocarbon producing tight reservoir rocks and water from the hydraulic fracturing process? To what extent does this alteration impact oil production? By further characterizing the flow paths near the fracture-matrix interface, what is the relative impact of geochemical process compared to geomechanical changes on production? This research focuses on rock types found in the Permian Basin. The research drives along two main thrusts: 1) Inorganic geochemistry studies involving representative rock types, connate fluids (hydrocarbons and water), and injected fluids (fracturing water) will be conducted in order to bound the kinetics of key mineral reactions; 2) Computed tomography (CT) for characterization of flow paths as a function of geochemical and geomechanical processes associated with hydraulic fracture creation and reservoir production. The objective of this characterization is to ultimately develop new insights into the role geochemical and geomechanical effects play on production. The work will include studying mechanical damage near the rock-fracture interface and how it impacts flow properties.

Stability of zirconium hydride

This reports complete Milestone M2.2.1 Stability of zirconium hydride: Experimental investigation of the hydrogen concentration of encapsulated zirconium hydride before and after joining. In this milestone, we first report the successful fabrication of crack-free bulk zirconium hydride by using the ORNL static hydriding system. The fabricated hydride was characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray computed tomography (XCT). XRD results showed that the δ-phase zirconium hydride, α-zirconium, and ε-phase hydride were present. XCT confirmed the absence of the internal cracking. The hydrogen concentration was determined by the weight change before and after hydrogen loading, given the fact that the oxide phase was not found during XRD analysis. Two metallic cladding materials, i.e., molybdenum and FeCrAl, were selected to encapsulate the fabricated zirconium hydride pellets. Demonstration capsules were designed and machined. Mo crucible was successfully sealed by using a combination of electron beam welding and gas tungsten arc welding. Due to the undesired neutronics property of Mo, further investigation of this cladding material was not pursued. Electron beam welding and laser beam welding were employed to seal the FeCrAl capsules. XRD were performed on the zirconium hydride before and after the sealing. The results showed that the welding process has negligible impact on the hydrogen content in the FeCrAl-canned zirconium hydride. The presented work fulfilled the proposed work under this milestone and paves a pathway to fabricate single-phase zirconium hydride and to develop robust cladding materials to can bulk zirconium hydride.

Automated Segmentation of Porous Thermal Spray Material CT Scans with Geometric Uncertainty Estimation

Thermal sprayed metal coatings are used in many industrial applications, and characterizing the structure and performance of these materials is vital to understanding their behavior in the field. X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) machines enable volumetric, nondestructive imaging of these materials, but precise segmentation of this grayscale image data into discrete material phases is necessary to calculate quantities of interest related to material structure. In this work, we present a methodology to automate the CT segmentation process as well as quantify uncertainty in segmentations via deep learning. Neural networks (NNs) are shown to accurately segment full resolution CT scans of thermal sprayed materials and provide maps of uncertainty that conservatively bound the predicted geometry. These bounds are propagated through calculations of material properties such as porosity that may provide an understanding of anticipated behavior in the field.

Understanding Microstructural Effects on Dynamic Performance Towards the Development of Shock Metamaterials

With the recent advances in additive manufacturing (AM), long-range periodic lattice assemblies are being developed for vibration and shock mitigation components in aerospace and military applications with unique geometric and topological structures. There has been extensive work in understanding the static properties associated with varying topology of these lattice architectures, but there is almost no understanding of microstructural affects in such structures under high-strain rate dynamic loading conditions. Here we report the shock behavior of lattices with varying intrinsic grain structures achieved by post process annealing. High resolution 316L stainless steel lattices were 3D printed by a laser-powder bed fusion machine and characterized by computed tomography. Subsequent annealing resulted in stress-relieved and recrystallized lattices. Overall the lattices had strong cubic texture aligning with the x-, y- and z-directions of the build with a preference outside the build direction (z). The recrystallized sample had more equiaxed polygonal grains and a layer of BCC ferrite at the surface of the structure approximately 1 grain thick. Upon dynamic compression the as-deposited lattice showed steady compaction behavior while the heat-treated lattices exhibit negative velocity behavior indicative of failure. We attribute this to the stiffer BCC ferrite in the annealed lattices becoming damaged and fragmenting during compression.
