Jet modification via 𝜋 0 -hadron correlations in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4–12 GeV/𝑐 and 0.5–7 GeV/𝑐, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au + Au collisions and 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions, 𝐼 𝐴⁢𝐴 and Δ 𝐴⁢𝐴 , as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, Δ⁢𝜙, are measured for the first time at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Finally, these results better quantify how the yield of low-𝑝 𝑇 associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

Cosmological angular trispectra and non-Gaussian covariance

Angular cosmological correlators are infamously difficult to compute due to the highly oscillatory nature of the projection integrals. Motivated by recent development on analytic approaches to cosmological perturbation theory, in this paper we present an efficient method for computing cosmological four-point correlations in angular space, generalizing previous works on lower-point functions. This builds on the FFTLog algorithm that approximates the matter power spectrum as a sum over power-law functions, which makes certain momentum integrals analytically solvable. The computational complexity is drastically reduced for correlators in a "separable" form—we define a suitable notion of separability for cosmological trispectra, and derive formulas for angular correlators of different separability classes. As an application of our formalism, we compute the angular galaxy trispectrum at tree level, with and without primordial non-Gaussianity. This includes effects of redshift space distortion and bias parameters up to cubic order. We also compute the non-Gaussian covariance of the angular matter power spectrum due to the connected four-point function, beyond the Limber approximation. Finally, we demonstrate that, in contrast to the standard lore, the Limber approximation can fail for the non-Gaussian covariance computation even for large multipoles.

A precise measurement of the Z -boson double-differential transverse momentum and rapidity distributions in the full phase space of the decay leptons with the ATLAS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV

This paper presents for the first time a precise measurement of the production properties of the Z boson in the full phase space of the decay leptons. This is in contrast to the many previous precise unfolded measurements per formed in the fiducial phase space of the decay leptons. The measurement is obtained from proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb -1 . The results, based on a total of 15.3 million Z boson decays to electron and muon pairs, extend and improve a previous measurement of the full set of angular coefficients describing Z-boson decay. The double-differential cross section distributions in Z-boson transverse momentum pT and rapidity y are measured in the pole region, defined as 80 < m ℓℓ < 100 GeV, over the range |y| < 3.6. The total uncertainty of the normalised cross-section measurements in the peak region of the pT distribution is dominated by statistical uncertainties over the full range and increases as a function of rapidity from 0.5–1.0% for |y| < 2.0 to 2 - 7% at higher rapidities. The results for the rapidity-dependent transverse momentum distributions are compared to state of-the-art QCD predictions, which combine in the best cases approximate N 4 LL resummation with N 3 LO fixed-order per turbative calculations. The differential rapidity distributions integrated over pT are even more precise, with accuracies from 0.2–0.3% for |y| < 2.0 to 0.4–0.9% at higher rapidities, and are compared to fixed-order QCD predictions using the most recent parton distribution functions. The agreement between data and predictions is quite good in most cases.

Radiation by a laser-driven flying-focus electron wave packet

An exact solution of the Dirac equation in the presence of an arbitrary electromagnetic plane wave is found, which corresponds to a focused electron wave packet, with the focus of the wave packet moving at the speed of light in the opposite direction of the average momentum of the electron wave packet (unless the plane wave is so intense to reflect the electron). The photon spectrum emitted by such an electron wave packet in the presence of a linearly polarized plane wave is studied both analytically and numerically. The spectrum is also compared with the one emitted by a single-momentum, plane-wave electron in the case of the electron being initially counterpropagating (on average for the flying-focus case) with the plane wave and within the locally constant field approximation. It is found that if the electron flying-focus wave packet is focused beyond a Compton wavelength, the angular distribution of the emitted radiation along the magnetic field of the electromagnetic plane wave is broader than for an electron with definite momentum. Corresponding the maximum value of the photon yield on the transverse plane is smaller in the flying-focus electron case. This could represent an experimental signature of a laser-driven flying-focus electron wave packet.

Measurement of Two-Point Energy Correlators within Jets in 𝑝 + 𝑝 Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 200 GeV

Hard-scattered partons ejected from high-energy proton-proton collisions undergo parton shower and hadronization, resulting in collimated collections of particles that are clustered into jets. A substructure observable that highlights the transition between the perturbative and nonperturbative regimes of jet evolution in terms of the angle between two particles is the two-point energy correlator (EEC). In this Letter, the first measurement of the EEC at RHIC is presented, using data taken from 200 GeV 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions by the STAR experiment. The EEC is measured both for all the pairs of particles in jets and separately for pairs with like and opposite electric charges. These measurements demonstrate that the transition between perturbative and nonperturbative effects occurs within an angular region that is consistent with expectations of a universal hadronization regime that scales with jet momentum for a given initiator flavor. Additionally, a deviation from Monte Carlo predictions at small angles in the charge-selected sample could result from mechanics of hadronization not fully captured by current models.

All-optical nanoscopic spatial control of molecular reaction yields on nanoparticles

Molecular adsorbate reactions on nanoparticles play a fundamental role in areas such as nano-photocatalysis, atmospheric, and astrochemistry. They can be induced, enhanced, and controlled by field localization and enhancement on the nanoparticle surface. In particular, the ability to perform highly controlled near-field-mediated reactions is key to deepening our understanding of surface photoactivity on nanosystems. Here, using reaction nanoscopy, we experimentally demonstrate all-optical nanoscopic control of surface reaction yields by tailoring the near fields on nanoparticles with waveform-controlled linear and bicircular two-color laser pulses, respectively. We observe site-selective proton emission from the dissociative ionization of adsorbate molecules on Si O 2 nanoparticles as a function of the polarization and relative phase of the two-color pulses. The angularly resolved close-to-uniform mapping between the surface reaction yields and the measured ion momentum enables the observation and spatial control of molecular reactions on the nanoparticle surface with nanoscopic resolution. The experimental results are modeled and reproduced qualitatively by classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations. Our work paves the way toward reliable all-optical control of photocatalytic chemical reactions on nanoscale surfaces.

Evaporation and scattering of neon, methane, and water from a dodecane flat liquid jet

The evaporation and scattering of Ne, CD 4 , and D 2 O from a dodecane flat liquid jet are investigated in a molecular beam apparatus. The experiment yields translational energy distributions as a function of scattering angle by means of a rotatable mass spectrometer. In the evaporation experiments, one observes a Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution with a cos $θ$ angular distribution superimposed on a weak, isotropic background. The scattering experiments show contributions from impulsive scattering and thermal desorption. At select incident angles for the three systems, angular distributions show super-specular scattering for the impulsive scattering channel, an effect attributed to anisotropic momentum transfer to the liquid surface. The impulsive scattering channel is analyzed with a soft-sphere model to explore energy transfer between the scatterer and liquid as a function of deflection angle. In conclusion, compared to Ne scattering, the polyatomic gases exhibit more thermal desorption and, in the impulsive scattering channel, a higher degree of internal excitation.

Measurement of the polarizations of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ and ψ ( 2S ) mesons produced in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV

The polarizations of prompt and non-prompt Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV, using data samples collected by the CMS experiment in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 103.3 fb − 1 . Based on the analysis of the dimuon decay angular distributions in the helicity frame, the polar anisotropy, λ ϑ , is measured as a function of the transverse momentum, p T , of the charmonium states, in the 25–120 and 20–100 GeV ranges for the Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) , respectively. The non-prompt polarizations agree with predictions based on the hypothesis that, for p T ≳ 25 GeV , the non-prompt Image 2 and ψ ( 2S ) are predominantly produced in two-body B meson decays. The prompt results clearly exclude strong transverse polarizations, even for p T exceeding 30 times the Image 2 mass, where λ ϑ tends to an asymptotic value around 0.3. Taken together with previous measurements, by CMS and LHCb at s = 7 TeV, the prompt polarizations show a significant variation with p T , at low p T .

Projective imaging of high-energy nuclei via coherent exclusive vector meson production in electron-nucleus collisions

One of the major goals of modern nuclear experiments is to study the distributions of gluons inside nuclei at high energy. A key measurement is the coherent exclusive vector meson (VM) production in diffractive electron-nucleus collisions, where the gluon spatial distribution inside the nucleus can be obtained through a Fourier transform of the squared nuclear momentum transfer (|t|) distribution. This research aims to overcome the two main obstacles of the |t| measurement: limited precision in measuring |t| arising from the momentum resolution of the outgoing electron and the overwhelming incoherent background. We demonstrate that by measuring the projected |t| distribution along the direction perpendicular to the electron scattering plane, the effect of the outgoing electron’s momentum resolution can be effectively mitigated, and the diffractive pattern is largely restored. Furthermore, we propose to measure the angular distribution of the VM’s decay daughters to statistically remove the incoherent background.

Investigating the broadening phenomenon in two-particle correlations induced by gluon saturation

It has been found that the gluon density inside the proton grows rapidly at small momentum fractions. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that this growth can be regulated by nonlinear effects, ultimately leading to gluon saturation. Within the color glass condensate framework, nonlinear QCD effects are predicted to suppress and broaden back-to-back angular correlations in collisions involving heavy nuclei. While suppression has been observed in various experiments in 𝑑/𝑝 + A collisions compared to 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions, the predicted broadening remains unobserved. This study investigates the contributions of intrinsic transverse momentum (𝑘 𝑇 ), which is associated with saturation physics, as well as parton showers and transverse motion from fragmentation (𝑝$^{frag}_{𝑇}$), which are not saturation dependent, to the width of the correlation function. Our findings show that the non-saturation dependent effects, especially the initial-state parton shower and 𝑝$^{frag}_{𝑇}$, which occur independently of the collision system, smear the back-to-back correlation more than gluon saturation does, making the broadening phenomenon difficult to observe.

Measurement of the J / ψ Polarization with Respect to the Event Plane in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

We study the polarization of inclusive J/ψ produced in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV at the LHC in the dimuon channel, via the measurement of the angular distribution of its decay products. We perform the study in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4, for three transverse momentum intervals (2 < p T < 4, 4 < p T < 6, 6 < p T < 10 GeV/c) and as a function of the centrality of the collision for 2 < p T < 6 GeV/c. For the first time, the polarization is measured with respect to the event plane of the collision, by considering the angle between the positive-charge decay muon in the J/ψ rest frame and the axis perpendicular to the event-plane vector in the laboratory system. A small transverse polarization is measured, with a significance reaching 3.9σ at low p T and for intermediate centrality values. The polarization could be connected with the behavior of the quark-gluon plasma, formed in Pb-Pb collisions, as a rotating fluid with large vorticity, as well as with the existence of a strong magnetic field in the early stage of its formation.

In-medium modification of dijets in PbPb collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

Modifications to the distribution of charged particles with respect to high transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) jets passing through a quark-gluon plasma are explored using the CMS detector. Back-to-back dijets are analyzed in lead-lead and proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV via correlations of charged particles in bins of relative pseudorapidity and angular distance from the leading and subleading jet axes. In comparing the lead-lead and proton-proton collision results, modifications to the charged-particle relative distance distribution and to the momentum distributions around the jet axis are found to depend on the dijet momentum balance x$_{j}$ , which is the ratio between the subleading and leading jet p$_{T}$. For events with x$_{j}$ ≈ 1, these modifications are observed for both the leading and subleading jets. However, while subleading jets show significant modifications for events with a larger dijet momentum imbalance, much smaller modifications are found for the leading jets in these events.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Self-Similarity, Fractality and Entropy Principle in Collisions of Hadrons and Nuclei at Tevatron, RHIC and LHC

$z$-Scaling of inclusive spectra as a manifestation of self-similarity and fractality of hadron interactions is illustrated. The scaling for negative particle production in $Au+Au$ collisionsfrom BES-I program at RHIC is demonstrated. The scaling variable $z$ depends on the momentum fractions of the colliding objects carried by the interacting constituents, and momentum fractions of the produced objects in the scattered and recoil directions, which carries the inclusive particle and its counterpart, respectively. Structures of the colliding objects and fragmentation processes in final stateare expressed by fractal dimensions. Medium produced in the collisions is described by a specific heat. The scaling function $\psi(z)$ reveals energy, angular, multiplicity, and flavor independence. It has a power behavior at high $z$ (high $p_T$). Based on entropy principle and $z$-scaling, energy loss as a function of the collision energy, centrality and transverse momentum of inclusive particle is estimated.New conservation law including fractal dimensions is found. Quantization of fractal dimensions is discussed.

Synchronization effects on rest frame energy and momentum densities in the proton

We obtain two-dimensional relativistic densities and currents of energy and momentum in a proton at rest. These densities are obtained at surfaces of fixed light front time, which physically corresponds to using an alternative synchronization convention. Mathematically, this is done using tilted light front coordinates, which consist of light front time and ordinary spatial coordinates. In this coordinate system, all 16 components of the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) obtain clear physical interpretations, and the nine Galilean components reproduce results from standard light front coordinates. We find angular modulations in several densities that are absent in the corresponding instant form results, which are explained as optical effects arising from using fixed light front time when motion is present within the target. Additionally, transversely polarized spin-half targets exhibit an energy dipole moment—which evaluates to −1/4 for all targets if the Belinfante EMT is used, but which is target dependent and vanishes for pointlike fermions if the asymmetric EMT is instead used.

Measurement of T-Dependence of the Beam Asymmetry (S) for the Reaction yp --> n'p AT GLUEX

We report on a measurement of the four-momentum transfer (-t) dependence of the Beam Asymmetry (Sigma) for the reaction yp --> n'p with the linearly polarized photon beam at GlueX. The observable is sensitive to the n' production mechanism. The Beam Asymmetry (Sigma) was extracted from azimuthal angular distributions (phi) combined to obtain yield asymmetries. This technique removes most contributions from instrumental asymmetries. These data are based on a data set that is five times more extensive than previous measurements. This allowed us to double the kinematic reach in the four-momentum transfer squared (-t) and reduce the statistical uncertainties. Up to a four-momentum transfer squared (-t) of 1.7 GeV2, the beam asymmetry is positive, close to unity, and shows little dependence on the four-momentum transfer -t. This indicates that the production process continues to be dominated by exchanges of the rho (p) and the omega (w) mesons. Further systematic cross-check was done by analyzing the decay mode nr^0r^0. This analysis also revealed positive asymmetries closer to unity providing an important systematic cross-check for the results obtained using n'-->nr+r-.

Medium-induced modification of groomed and ungroomed jet mass and angularities in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration presents a new suite of jet substructure measurements in Pb–Pb and pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. These measurements provide access to the internal structure of jets via the momentum and angle of their constituents, probing how the quark–gluon plasma modifies jets, an effect known as jet quenching. Jet grooming additionally removes soft wide-angle radiation to enhance perturbative accuracy and reduce experimental uncertainties. We report the groomed and ungroomed jet mass m jet and jet angularities λ$^{κ}_{α}$ using κ = 1 and α > 0. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti-k T algorithm with resolution parameter R = 0.2. A narrowing of the jet mass and angularity distributions in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to pp is observed and is enhanced for groomed results, confirming modification of the jet core. By using consistent jet definitions and kinematic cuts between the mass and angularities for the first time, previous inconsistencies in the interpretation of quenching measurements are resolved, rectifying a hurdle for understanding how jet quenching arises from first principles and highlighting the importance of a well-controlled baseline. These results are compared with a variety of theoretical models of jet quenching, providing constraints on jet energy-loss mechanisms in the quark–gluon plasma.

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle jet production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The multiplicity dependence of jet production in pp collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is studied for the first time. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-$k_T$ algorithm with resolution parameters $\textit{R}$ varying from 0.2 to 0.7. The jets are measured in the pseudorapidity range |$η_{\text{jet}}$| < 0.9 – $\textit{R}$ and in the transverse momentum range 5 < $p^{ch}_{\text{T,jet}}$ < 140 GeV/c. The multiplicity intervals are categorised by the ALICE forward detector V0. The $p_T$ differential cross section of charged-particle jets are compared to leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations. It is found that the data are better described by the NLO calculation, although the NLO prediction overestimates the jet cross section below 20 GeV/c. The cross section ratios for different $\textit{R}$ are also measured and compared to model calculations. These measurements provide insights into the angular dependence of jet fragmentation. The jet yield increases with increasing self-normalised charged-particle multiplicity. This increase shows only a weak dependence on jet transverse momentum and resolution parameter at the highest multiplicity. While such behaviour is qualitatively described by the present version of PYTHIA, quantitative description may require implementing new mechanisms for multi-particle production in hadronic collisions.

Measurements of inclusive and differential cross-sections of $t\overline{t}\gamma$ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Inclusive and differential cross-sections are measured at particle level for the associated production of a top quark pair and a photon ($t\overline{t}\gamma$). The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. The measurements are performed in the single-lepton and dilepton top quark pair decay channels focusing on ($t\overline{t}\gamma$) topologies where the photon is radiated from an initial-state parton or one of the top quarks. The absolute and normalised differential cross-sections are measured for several variables characterising the photon, lepton and jet kinematics as well as the angular separation between those objects. The observables are found to be in good agreement with the Monte Carlo predictions. The photon transverse momentum differential distribution is used to set limits on effective field theory parameters related to the electroweak dipole moments of the top quark. The combined limits using the photon and the Z boson transverse momentum measured in $t\overline{t}$ production in associations with a Z boson are also set.
