Mercury rotation period determined from Mariner 10 photography

The rotation period of Mercury has been determined to be 58.661 days by using high-resolution photography from the Mariner 10 mission. This value matches the period required for 3/2 synchronism with the orbital period (58.6462 days) within the 1-sigma errors assigned and is consistent with the latest values derived from radar and earth-based telescopic observations.

Photometric observations of Mercury from Mariner 10

The elimination of the residual image problem which plagued previous Mariner imaging systems allowed photometry of moderately high quality to be carried out on Mercury by Mariner 10. The conclusions from the photometric analysis are as follows. To a surface resolution of 20 km, Mercury is covered with a dark fine-grained soil similar to the lunar regolith. No regions having anomalous polarization or color were discovered, which might have implied large amounts of metallic Fe or exposed bare rock. Photoclinometry suggests that the center of the Caloris Basin may be about 9 km below the outside rim. The heavily cratered plains have albedos of about 0.17, somewhat brighter than the lunar highlands. The albedos of the darker smooth plains and the interiors of bright fresh craters are systematically higher than their lunar counterparts. One consistent interpretation of the color and albedo relationships is that the dark smooth plains resemble the low-Ti, low-Fe lunar maria and that the crust is generally low in Ti, metallic Fe, and Fe(3+).

Impulsive solar flare X-rays greater than 10 keV and some characteristics of cosmic gamma-ray bursts

Observations of impulsive solar flare X-rays greater than 10 keV are summarized and their interpretation in terms of nonthermal and thermal electron spectra is discussed. This is followed by a brief consideration of models of the hard X-ray source and the requirements of the electron acceleration process during the flash phase of solar flares. Finally, the characteristics of the recently discovered cosmic gamma-ray bursts are compared with those of the impulsive solar X-ray bursts. If both types of emissions are interpreted as bremsstrahlung from energetic electrons, then the electron spectra must be widely different in the two cases. For example, in case of solar flares, most of the energy is carried by electrons with energies of about 5 keV. On the other hand, electrons with kinetic energy of about 300 keV carry most of the energy in the cosmic source.

Optical studies of 10 high galactic latitude X-ray sources

Optical studies are reported for a representative sample of 10 unidentified high galactic latitude X-ray sources that are north of declination minus 25 deg and that have 3U error boxes less than or of the order of 0.5 square degrees. The source 3U 1410-03 is identified with a peculiar emission-line spiral galaxy, NGC 5506, and a distance group 4 rich cluster of galaxies, Abell 2142, is suggested as a possible identification for 3U 1555+27. It is shown that very few of the unidentified high galactic latitude sources are quasi-stellar sources brighter than 17.5 mag, although one possible X-ray quasar, NAB 0137-01, is reported.

Study of the organic matter in the DSDP /JOIDES/ cores, legs 10-15

The composition of the organic matter collected on legs 10 to 15 of the DSDP (Deep Sea Drilling Project) is described. Distributions of various alkanes, carboxylic acids, steroids and terpenoids, isoprenoid ketones and olefins, and aromatic polycyclic compounds are given. Samples analyzed had terrigenous clay components, with variable organic carbon contents and thus diverse solvent soluble matter. The distribution patterns for the various compound series monitored were of marine derivation, with the terrigenous components superimposed. Diagenesis of steroids appeared to proceed via both stanones and stanols to their respective steranes. Degradative processes were observed to be operative: oxidative products, mainly ketones derived from steroids and phytol, were identified, probably due to microbial alteration prior to or during sedimentation. Loss of alkane and fatty acid C preferences and presence of polycyclic aromatics evinced maturation. Results indicate that the accumulation, degradation, diagenesis and maturation of organic matter occurs in various steps in the deep sea environment.

He 584 A airglow emission from Venus - Mariner 10 observations

Observations were made across the bright limb of Venus by the ultraviolet spectrometer on Mariner 10 as the spacecraft flew by this planet on February 5, 1974. The altitude variation of the brightness of 584-A emission is interpreted with respect to the helium distribution in the atmosphere. Resonance scattering of solar radiation is considered as the source of this emission. The comparison of model calculations with the data shows that the observed altitude profile is consistent with a He density of about 2 million/cu cm at 145-km altitude and with an exospheric temperature of the order of 375 K. If the major loss of helium is by solar-wind scavenging only, the present helium content on Venus can be maintained by an outgassing rate of about 200,000 per sq cm per sec from the planet crust. By using these neutral helium measurements, it is found that the He(+) ion density in the outer ionosphere would be of the order of 200/cu cm.

Magnetospheres of earth and Jupiter after Pioneer 10

Possible reasons are discussed for the marked differences observed between the magnetospheres of earth and Jupiter, and a model of Jupiter's magnetosphere is proposed which can explain the observations of the Pioneer 10 mission. It is shown that the corotating plasma in Jupiter's plasmasphere is in the form of a flattened disk due to inertial forces and that Jupiter's magnetosphere is, in part, a rigidly rotating warped skew 'magnetodisk'. According to the proposed model, the inner part of the magnetosphere consists of a warped magnetodisk, the dipole field lines are modified by a ring current, and the equatorial plasma density increases with distance in the region beyond the synchronous orbit radius. Considerable attention is given to the effects resulting from spiraling of the magnetic-field lines, the tilt in the magnetic dipole, and the strong viscous interaction of the solar wind on the dawn side of the magnetosphere.

A semiempirical model for atmospheric gamma rays from 0.3 to 10 MeV at a geomagnetic latitude of 40 deg

A model of atmospheric gamma rays based on the concept of source function is proposed for atmospheric depths from 0 to 500 g per sq cm and for an energy range of 0.3-10 MeV at a geomagnetic latitude of 40 deg. Since the source function is derived from measured fluxes, the proposed method is referred to as a semiempirical model. This model derives a source strength directly from measurements with an omnidirectional counter, thereby being an inverse of previous approaches. Source strengths are determined for 38 predicted atmospheric gamma ray lines and for 10 different energies in the continuum. Total and directional fluxes are calculated at two different atmospheric depths. The results are found to be consistent with other measurements and theoretical calculations.

Observations of turbulence in the atmosphere of Venus using Mariner 10 radio occultation measurements

A technique is developed for estimating the outer scale of turbulence in a planetary atmosphere using dual-frequency radio occultation measurements. This technique is based on the frequency dependence of the temporal frequency spectra for the log-amplitude fluctuations and is particularly useful when probing the upper atmosphere where the transverse velocity of the line-of-sight path is decelerating very rapidly. It is applied to the region of strong turbulence located in the vicinity of 60 km on the dayside of the atmosphere of Venus using the Mariner 10 S/X radio occultation measurements. It is found that, contrary to earlier findings from Mariner 5, the outer scale of turbulence is at least 5 km. It appears that the outer scale of turbulence is as large as the vertical extent of the region of strong turbulence. Estimates of the structure constants for refractive index and temperature fluctuations indicate that the turbulence is stronger than that measured near the earth's tropopause.

Interpretation of Mariner 10 infrared observations of Venus

The infrared radiometer experiment on Mariner 10 measured limb-darkening curves for Venus in two spectral intervals, one near 11 microns and the other near 45 microns. These are analyzed in terms of the vertical opacity profile at each wavelength over a limited altitude range, approximately 60 to 80 km above the surface of the planet. Accurate multiple-scattering calculations are used to show that both opacity profiles are consistent with a model containing a cloud of sulphuric acid droplets with radii of 1.1 microns and a small amount of water vapor. Profiles of particle number density and humidity vs height are presented.

The Mariner 10 radio occultation measurements of the ionosphere of Venus

Data from the Mariner 10 radio occultation experiment have been utilized to determine the vertical electron density distribution in the ionosphere of Venus. The ingress measurements, which were made at latitude 1.3 deg N on the nightside of the planet, show two distinct layers. The main layer was located at 142 km altitude and had a peak density of 9000 electrons per cu cm. A secondary layer with a peak density of 7000/cu cm was detected at 124 km altitude. During egress, the ionosphere was probed at latitude 56.0 deg S on the dayside of Venus. The solar zenith angle in this region was 67.0 deg. The dayside ionosphere consisted of a main layer with a peak density of 290,000 per cu cm at 142 km altitude and several minor layers. At the top of the dayside ionosphere, the measurements showed an abrupt drop in the density from 2000 per cu cm at 335 km altitude to below the level of detectability, i.e., less than 200 per cu cm, at 360 km altitude. This abrupt density change may be the ionopause where the solar wind plasma interacts with the ionized components of the atmosphere.

Jupiter - Interpretation of the Pioneer 10 infrared radiometer and S-band occultation observations

On the basis of recently calculated models of the Jovian atmosphere, a value of 5.0 was derived for the H2/He mixing ratio from the Pioneer 10 infrared radiometer data. A far-infrared spectrum corresponding to the thermal profile obtained in the Pioneer S-band occultation experiment was also computed. The spectrum strongly suggests a misinterpretation of the data obtained in that experiment.

The energy spectrum of cosmic ray electrons between 10 and 1000 GeV

Measurements made by the Bombay Group on the fluxes of cosmic ray electrons in the energy range 10-1000 GeV have been compared with those of other workers in the same energy domain with a view to understand the present confused situation on the existing observations at these high energies. Such an analysis clearly brings out the current situation in its true perspective and highlights the care and emphasis to be placed on future experimentation in this important field.

The Pioneer 10 plasma analyzer results at Jupiter

Results are reported for the Pioneer 10 plasma-analyzer experiment at Jupiter. The analyzer system consisted of dual 90-deg quadrispherical electrostatic analyzers, multiple charged-particle detectors, and attendant electronics; it was capable of determining the incident plasma-distribution parameters over the energy range from 100 to 18,000 eV for protons and from approximately 1 to 500 eV for electrons. Data are presented on the interaction between the solar wind and the Jovian magnetosphere, the interplanetary ion flux, observations of the magnetosheath plasma, and traversals of the bow shock and magnetopause. Values are estimated for the proton isotropic temperature, number density, and bulk velocity within the magnetosheath flow field as well as for the beta parameter, ion number density, and magnetic-energy density of the magnetospheric plasma. It is argued that Jupiter has a reasonably thick magnetosphere somewhat similar to earth's except for the vastly different scale sizes involved.

Pioneer 10 - Observations of energetic electrons in the Jovian magnetosphere

Data obtained by Pioneer 10 on the properties of energetic electrons in the Jovian magnetosphere are analyzed. The basic detectors (seven miniature Geiger-Mueller tubes) are described together with the signal processor and sampling techniques. The model of Jupiter used in the data analysis is a centered dipole with a tilt of 9.5 deg toward 230 deg System III longitude. The energetic-electron observations within the inner magnetosphere are found to indicate that radial as well as pitch-angle diffusion of energetic electrons must take place very rapidly. Outbound observations within the magnetodisk (the region beyond 20 Jupiter radii) are found to indicate a spiraling of the apparent location of the longitude of the dipole tilt, while inbound data indicate a constant value for the apparent longitude of the dipole tilt out to 70 Jupiter radii.

The Mariner 10 Venus encounter - A review

A brief description is given of the Mariner 10 spacecraft, its complement of scientific instruments, and its encounter with Venus. It is noted that the geometry of the Venus encounter was dictated entirely by the necessity to use Venus' gravitational field to deflect the flight path toward Mercury. Results discussed include observations of plasma and magnetic-field perturbations several hundreds of Venus radii downstream of the solar wind which indicated the presence of a well-developed plasma tail and UV observations of H, He, C, and O abundances in the upper atmosphere. The atomic-oxygen abundance was found to be an order of magnitude higher than that observed on Mars. Radio-occultation measurements showed four distinct temperature inversions in the atmosphere and two nightside ionospheric layers. Results of television observations are also discussed which confirmed the hazy model of the visible atmosphere.

Origin and composition of heavy nuclei between 10 and 60 MeV per nucleon during interplanetary quiet times in 1968-1972

Results are reported for measurements of the relative abundances of nuclei from boron through iron in the energy range between 10 and 60 MeV/nucleon which were made with an instrument on board OGO 5 during the period of changing solar modulation from 1968 to 1971. The investigation was conducted to determine whether the heavy nuclei in this energy range were of solar or galactic origin. It is found that the relative abundances are in good agreement with the nuclear abundances of galactic cosmic rays, that the differential energy spectra of carbon and oxygen at these energies diverged from the characteristic modulated galactic spectrum, that changes in the C + N + O flux during this period underwent a temporal phase lag with respect to high-energy galactic cosmic rays, and that this phase lag was the same as that for helium nuclei of galactic origin with energies of 30 to 100 MeV/nucleon. It is concluded that the experimental evidence favors a galactic origin for the present nuclei. Some implications of the energy-spectrum results for cosmic-ray modulation theory are discussed.
