Organic photodetector with built-in amplification for the detection of visible light with low optical power
We report on an organic-based photodetector that integrates a dual-gate organic thin-film transistor (DG-OTFT) with an organic photodiode (OPD) to produce a device with a high effective responsivity at low optical power and video-rate compatible response. In this device, the OPD operates in photovoltaic mode, instead of the commonly used photoconductive mode, to modulate one of the gate voltages of the DG-OTFT. Effective responsivity values of 10 A W –1 are measured at optical power values lower than 10 nW at 635 nm. Here, modeling of the operation of this new photodetector suggests that effective responsivity values up to 10 5 A W –1 can be achieved at optical powers of 1 nW using current printing technology and state-of-the-art organic semiconductors.

Facet-Dependent Photodegradation of Methylene Blue by Hematite Nanoplates in Visible Light
The expression of specific crystal facets in different nanostructures is known to play a vital role in determining the sensitivity toward photodegradation of organics, which can generally be ascribed to differences in surface structure and energy. Herein, we report the synthesis of hematite nanoplates with controlled relative exposure of basal (001) and edge (012) facets, enabling us to establish direct correlation between surface structure and the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. MB adsorption experiments showed that the capacity on (001) is about three times larger than on (012), and this is supported by density functional theory calculations suggesting adsorption energies about 1.5 times higher. However, this alone cannot explain the observed MB photodegradation rate, which is around 14.5 times faster on (001) than (012). The enhancement we attribute to a higher availability of photoelectron accepting surface Fe3+ sites on the (001) facet. This facilitates more efficient iron valence cycling and the heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction yielding MB-oxidizing hydroxyl radicals at the surface. Our findings help establish a rational basis for design and optimization of hematite nanostructures as photocatalysts for environmental remediation.
Structural and Electronic Effect Driven Distortions in Visible Light Absorbing Polar Materials A Ta 2 V 2 O 11 ( A = Sr, Pb)
Complex vanadates of tantalum(V), such as ATa 2 V 2 O 11 (A = Sr, Pb), are rare and underrated materials, which have potential application domains that could be substantially expanded, mitigating the existing controversy on their atomic and electronic organization. Herein, we present a thorough structural examination combining synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction-aided distortion mode analysis with computational methods to study hettotypes of SrTa 2 V 2 O 11 (STVO) and PbTa 2 V 2 O 11 (PTVO). Being distinct from the perovskite family due to the presence of [VO 4 ] groups, both compounds are polar dielectric materials with certain similarities to SBT and PBT Aurivillius phases. Applying the model of anions of metallic matrices to the analysis of electron localization functions calculated on top of as-established equilibrium structures helps retrace the effects in the Sr and Pb surroundings on the respective crystal packings of STVO and PTVO.
