A Cautionary Tale: Failure of the Valence CASSCF to Describe the Hallmark of Hydrogen Bonding

Valence CASSCF (vCAS) calculations for the hydrogen-bonded (H2O)2, (HF)2, and HF–H2O dimers fail to predict the lengthening of the hydrogen donor bond and the corresponding red shift in the donor bond vibrational stretching frequency. Analysis of the active orbitals in the vCAS calculation reveals that one of the weakly occupied orbitals in each dimer is used to correlate the electrons in the acceptor lone pairs rather than those in the donor bonding orbitals. This has significant implications for subsequent treatments of the dynamical correlation that are based on the vCAS wavefunction.

Aliovalent Doping of CeO 2 Improves the Stability of Atomically Dispersed Pt

Atomically dispersed supported catalysts hold considerable promise as catalytic materials. The ability to employ and stabilize them against aggregation in complex process environments remains a key challenge to the elusive goal of 100% atom utilization in catalysis. In this work, using a Gd-doped ceria support for atomically dispersed surface Pt atoms, we establish how the combined effects of aliovalent doping and oxygen vacancy generation provide dynamic mechanisms that serve to enhance the stability of supported single atom configurations. Using correlated, in situ X-ray absorption, photoelectron and vibrational spectroscopies for analysis of the samples on the two types of support (with and without Gd doping), we establish that the Pt atoms locate proximal to Gd dopants, forming a speciation that serves to enhance the thermal stability of Pt atoms against aggregation.

Microhydration of the metastable N -Protomer of 4-Aminobenzoic acid by condensation at 80 K: H/D exchange without conversion to the more stable O- protomer

4-Aminobenzoic acid (4ABA) is a model scaffold for studying solvent-mediated proton transfer. Although protonation at the carboxylic group (O-protomer) is energetically favored in the gas phase, the N-protomer, where the proton remains on the amino group, can be kinetically trapped by electrospray ionization of 4ABA in an aprotic solvent such as acetonitrile. Here we report the formation of the hydrated deuterium isotopologues of the N-protomers, RND 3 + ·(H 2 O) n=1-3 , (R=C 6 H 4 COOD), which are generated by condensing water molecules onto the bare N-protomers in a liquid nitrogen cooled, radiofrequency octopole ion trap at 80 K. The product clusters are then transferred to a 20 K cryogenic ion trap where they are tagged with weakly bound D 2 molecules. The structures of these clusters are determined by analysis of their vibrational patterns obtained by resonant IR photodissociation. The resulting patterns confirm that the metastable N-protomer configuration remains intact even when warmed by sequential condensation of water molecules. Attachment of H 2 O molecules onto the RND 3 + head group also affords the opportunity to explore the possibility of H/D exchange between the acid scaffold and the proximal water network. The spectroscopic results establish that although the RND 3 + ·(H 2 O) n=1,2 clusters are formed without H/D exchange, the n = 3 cluster exhibits about 10% H/D exchange as evidenced by the appearance of the telltale HOD bands. Furthermore, the site of exchange on the acid is determined to be the acidic OH by the emergence of the OH stretching fundamental in the -COOH motif.

Ground state rotational and kinetic temperatures of C 2 molecules in a laser-produced plasma

This study presents an experimental comparison between rotational and kinetic temperatures of molecular species in a laser-produced plasma, utilizing tunable laser absorption spectroscopy. We analyzed high-resolution and time-resolved absorption spectra of 31 rotational transitions within the Phillips A 1 II u –X 1 Σ g 3-0 band of the C 2 molecule, measured from a laser-produced graphite plasma in ~2 Torr argon, within the 771–781 nm spectral range. Spectral fitting provided quantitative state column densities of C 2 rotational energy levels in the ground electronic and vibrational states. Boltzmann analysis revealed thermalized rotational distributions showing rotational temperatures decreasing from 3000 to 600 K within 5–500 μs following the onset of the laser plasma. The measured kinetic and rotational temperatures of C 2 molecules are comparable, suggesting that collisional processes in the laser-produced plasma are sufficient to maintain thermal equilibrium between the C 2 molecules and the Ar background gas.

Condition monitoring of wind turbine drivetrains: state-of-the-art technologies, recent trends, and future outlook

As global wind capacity expands, reducing operations and maintenance costs is critical to lowering the levelized cost of energy. This paper explores the state of the art in condition monitoring and prognostic strategies for wind turbine drivetrains, which are among the most failure-prone and maintenance-intensive subsystems. Current diagnostic methodologies are evaluated, covering supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data, high-frequency vibration and acoustic analysis, machine learning and digital twin frameworks. Finally, practical challenges are identified that limit wide-scale industrial adoption, in order to guide future research and industrial efforts.

Preprocessing Affords 3D Crystalline Poly(3-hexylthiophene) Structure

The aggregation and crystallization of poly(3-hexylthiophene- 2,5-diyl) (P3HT), a representative active layer material used for organic field-effect transistor (OFET) applications, are influenced by the solution pretreatment and deposition process. This study explores vibration-assisted convective deposition for the fabrication of OFETs in comparison to spin coating, blade coating, and convective deposition without vibration. The ultraviolet–visible spectroscopic analysis demonstrates that convective deposition, especially assisted with vibration, leads to a greater degree of intrachain interactions, longer conjugation length, and enhanced polymer backbone planarization. When the P3HT solution is preprocessed via sonication and aging, the P3HT films exhibit J-like aggregation, and (h11) peaks can be observed through grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, suggesting an ordered 3D crystalline structure. OFETs based on such films exhibit high mobilities (up to 0.14 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ). The results point to the sensitivity of P3HT charge transport behavior to the intramolecular interactions and backbone planarity and further deepen our understanding of the relationship between processing, aggregates, molecular ordering, and resultant device properties.
