Jahn–Teller distortion controls electron transfer in photoexcited Cu( I ) donor–acceptor systems

The Jahn–Teller distortion (JTD) is a defining structural response to electronic excitation in Cu( I )-based transition metal complexes, yet its role in photoinduced electron transfer (PET) remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that the JTD governs charge separation (CS) through a vibronically controlled conical intersection in heteroleptic Cu( I ) bisphenanthroline–naphthalene diimide (CuHETPHEN-NDI) donor–acceptor dyads. Using 20-fs broadband transient absorption spectroscopy combined with coherent vibrational wavepacket (CVWP) analysis and quantum chemical calculations, we directly track nuclear motions that steer the system from the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer ( 1 MLCT) state to the CS state. Steric bulkiness of the pendant groups at the 2,9-positions of the phenanthroline ligand systematically slows both JTD and CS. Short-time Fourier transformation and Fourier filtering analyses identify two key vibrational signatures: a low-frequency breathing mode (∼100 cm −1 ) via a bond distance change between Cu and ligated Ns (Cu–N) that modulates the NDI anion absorption and acts as a vibronic coupling coordinate, and a higher-frequency mode (∼313 cm −1 ) that evolves along the PET trajectory. Normal mode analysis and potential energy surface calculations show that the JTD brings the 1 MLCT and CS states into degeneracy, while the Cu–N breathing motion dynamically modulates donor–acceptor electronic coupling to enable ultrafast nonadiabatic electron transfer. Steric hindrance exerted by the groups at the 2,9 positions of the phenanthroline ligands suppresses this vibronic coupling, leading to faster CVWP decoherence for the 313 cm −1 mode and slower CS. These findings unravel JTD-controlled vibronic coupling at conical intersection as a governing factor for CS and provide insight into designing Cu-based photosensitizers by harnessing structural dynamics to control PET.

Sierra/SD - Theory Manual - 4.56

Sierra/SD provides a massively parallel implementation of structural dynamics finite element analysis, required for high fidelity, validated models used in modal, vibration, static and shock analysis of structural systems. This manual describes the theory behind many of the constructs in Sierra/SD. For a more detailed description of how to use Sierra/SD, we refer the reader to Sierra/SD, User's Notes. Many of the constructs in Sierra/SD are pulled directly from published material. Where possible, these materials are referenced herein. However, certain functions in Sierra/SD are specific to our implementation. We try to be far more complete in those areas. The theory manual was developed from several sources including general notes, a programmer notes manual, the user's notes and of course the material in the open literature.

Synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of actinyl(VI) tetrahalide coordination compounds containing 2, 2'-bipyridine

A series of three new actinide tetrahalide coordination compounds containing 2,2'-bipyridinium (H 2 bpy) have been synthesized by room temperature evaporation and characterized via single crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The solid-state compounds (Np1, U1, and U2) contain the AnO 2 2+ cation coordinated to four halide (chloride or bromide) atoms to form the anionic tetrahalide molecular unit [AnO 2 X 4 ] 2– (X = Cl, Br) and are charge balanced by the 2,2'-bipyridinium cations that engage in electrostatic interactions with the actinyl complex. Np1 (N 2 C 10 H 10 )[NpO 2 Cl 4 ] contains 2,2'-bipyridine in the cis conformation where both the nitrogen atoms are directed towards the [NpO 2 Cl 4 ] 2– monomer. Within U1 (N 2 C 10 H 9 )[UO 2 Cl 4 ], the 2,2'-bipyridine is in a trans conformation, and found in the same orientation in the isomorphous structure U2 (N 2 C 10 H 9 )[UO 2 Br 4 ]. The compounds were further characterized by vibrational spectroscopy with specific interest in the actinyl cation. Raman spectroscopy provided information on the actinyl symmetric stretch (ν 1 ) whereas IR spectroscopy is used to determine the location of the asymmetric stretch (ν 3 ). Here, spectral similarities are observed between the two isomorphous structures, but slight variations across the series of structures are found to be associated with bipyridine bands in the various conformations. Additional analysis of these vibrational features in U1 and U2 provided information on the actinyl force constants, allowing insight into the relative uranyl bond strength that was compared to similar tetrahalide compounds.

Vibrational signatures of HNO 3 acidity when complexed with microhydrated alkali metal ions, M + ∙(HNO 3 )(H 2 O) n =5 (M = Li, K, Na, Rb, Cs), at 20 K

The speciation of strong acids like HNO 3 under conditions of restricted hydration is an important factor in the rates of chemical reactions at the air-water interface. Here we explore the trade-offs in play when HNO 3 is attached to alkali ions (Li + -Cs + ) with four water molecules in their primary hydration shells. This is achieved by analyzing the vibrational spectra of the M + ∙(HNO 3 )(H 2 O) 5 clusters cooled to about 20 K in a cryogenic photofragmentation mass spectrometer. The local acidity of the acidic OH group is estimated by the extent of the red shift in its stretching frequency when attached to a single water molecule. Here, the persistence of this local structural motif (HNO 3 -H 2 O) in all of these alkali metal clusters enables us to determine the competition between the effect of the direct complexation of the acid with the cation, which acts to enhance acidity, and the role of the water network in the first hydration shell around the ions, which acts to counter (screen) the intrinsic effect of the ion. Analysis of the vibrational features associated with the acid molecule as well as those of the water network reveal how cooperative interactions in the micro hydration regime conspire to effectively offset the intrinsic enhancement of HNO 3 acidity afforded by attachment to the smaller cations.

Competing mechanisms at vibrated interfaces of density-contrast fluids

Fluid-fluid interfacial instability and subsequent fluid mixing are ubiquitous in nature and engineering. The hydrodynamic instability of fluid interfaces has long centered on the pressure gradient-driven long-wavelength Rayleigh-Taylor instability and the resonance-induced short-wavelength Faraday instability. However, neither instability alone can explain the dynamics when both mechanisms are present. We identify a previously unseen multi-modal instability emerging from their coexistence. When the denser fluid is polydimethylsiloxane, the mixed region at a high density contrast (Atwood number = 0.9) spans a vibration amplitude range approximately twice the gravitational acceleration. Using Floquet stability analysis, we show how vibrations govern transitions between the RT and Faraday instabilities, leading to contention between these instabilities rather than resonant enhancement. Here, the initial transient growth is represented by the exponential modal growth of the most unstable Floquet exponent, along with its accompanying periodic behavior. Direct numerical simulations validate these findings and track interface breakup into the multiscale and nonlinear regimes. Specifically, we show that growing RT modes nonlinearly suppresses Faraday responses even when the initial growth rate of the Faraday instability is 3.63 times that of RT, so a bidirectional competition hinders their sustained coexistence.
