Residual symmetries and scalar multiplet vacuum alignment in non-Abelian flavour models

We demonstrate that, upon minimizing a renormalizable, single-scalar potential invariant under a non-Abelian symmetry, special orientations in the associated vacuum alignment of the scalar multiplet correspond to the preservation of a discrete residual flavour symmetry in the broken phase of the theory. Conversely, we show that these special scalar alignments are perturbed when additional Lagrangian operators (e.g. renormalizable, multi-flavon operators and/or effective, higher-dimensional operators) are present that break said residual symmetry, leading to a vacuum reorientation and phenomenological consequences. We therefore construct a one-to-one correspondence principle between broken residual symmetries and vacuum alignment corrections, providing a mechanism to identify (and correct) a subtle but persistent form of phenomenologically relevant fine-tuning embedded in — but often ignored by — most successful non-Abelian flavour models. We first establish this correspondence in a set of toy models based on the S4 permutation symmetry, and then apply the lessons learned to the more realistic A4 Altarelli-Feruglio and ∆(27) Universal Texture Zero models.

A Goldstone boson equivalence for inflation

The effective field theory of single-field inflation characterizes the inflationary epoch in terms of a pattern of symmetry breaking. An operator acquires a time-dependent vacuum expectation value, defining a preferred spatial slicing. In the absence of dynamical gravity, the fluctuations around the time-dependent background are described by the Goldstone boson associated with this symmetry breaking process. With gravity, the Goldstone is eaten by the metric, becoming the scalar metric fluctuation. In this paper, we will show that in general single-field inflation, the statistics of scalar metric fluctuations are given by the statistics of this Goldstone boson decoupled from gravity up to corrections that are controlled as an expansion in slow-roll parameters. This even holds in the presence of additional parameters, like the speed of sound, that naively enhance the impact of the gravitational terms. In the process, we derive expressions for leading and sub-leading gravitational corrections to all-orders in the Goldstone boson.

Renewable low-Z wall for fusion reactors with built-in tritium recovery (Final Technical Report)

This project pursued development of a novel renewable plasma-facing wall technology for fusion reactors. The technology is based on a slurry which can be easily delivered by delivery tubes to the reactor wall. The slurry dries at the hot reactor wall into pebble rods which are extruded out into the hot plasma, where the pebbles break off and fall along the reactor wall and can be recovered by gravity and re-used. The falling pebbles carry away heat and tritium and also protect the wall against large scale erosion or redeposition of material. The research focused on carbon-based pebble rods and demonstrated that pebble rods could be produced from slurry with tolerable levels of outgassing on a reactor-relevant timescale (< 5 minutes). Steady-state handling of reactor relevant (up to 50 MW/m 2 ) normal-incidence heat loads was demonstrated. Pebble release velocities were found to be sufficiently small (< 1 m/s) to allow recovery below the vacuum chamber. Tunability of the pebble rod breaking rate was demonstrated by changing the fill fraction of the interpebble matrix which binds the pebbles together. This work could benefit the public by helping move forward the design of commercially viable fusion energy reactors. Designing a first wall for magnetic fusion reactors which can handle the huge heat loads present and also avoid buildup of tritium-containing deposits is extremely challenging and requires novel approaches like the one being investigated here.

First-order inflation

I discuss the most recent model of inflation. In first-order inflation the inflationary epoch is associated with a first-order phase transition, with the most likely candidate being GUT symmetry breaking. The transition from the false-vacuum inflationary phase to the true-vacuum radiation-dominated phase proceeds through the nucleation and percolation of true-vacuum bubbles. The first successful and simplest model of first-order inflation, extended inflation, is discussed in some detail: evolution of the cosmic-scale factor, reheating, density perturbations, and the production of gravitational waves both from quantum fluctuations and bubble collisions. Particular attention is paid to the most critical issue in any model of first-order inflation: the requirements on the nucleation rate to ensure a graceful transition from the inflationary phase to the radiation-dominated phase.

Exact results in softly broken supersymmetric chiral gauge theories with flavor

We present exact results in softly broken supersymmetric SU⁡(𝑁 𝐶 ) chiral gauge theories with charged fermions in one antisymmetric, 𝑁 𝐹 fundamental, and 𝑁 𝐶 + 𝑁 𝐹 − 4 antifundamental representations. We achieve this by considering the supersymmetric version of these theories and utilizing anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking at a scale 𝑚 ≪ Λ to generate a vacuum. The connection to nonsupersymmetric theories is then conjectured in the limit 𝑚 → ∞. For odd 𝑁 𝐶 , we determine the massless fermions and unbroken global symmetries in the infrared. For even 𝑁 𝐶 , we find global symmetries are nonanomalous and no massless fermions. In all cases, the symmetry breaking patterns differ from what the tumbling hypothesis would suggest.

Mirror twin Higgs cosmology: constraints and a possible resolution to the H$_{0}$ and S$_{8}$ tensions

The mirror twin Higgs model (MTH) is a solution to the Higgs hierarchy problem that provides well-predicted cosmological signatures with only three extra parameters: the temperature of the twin sector, the abundance of twin baryons, and the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of twin electroweak symmetry breaking. These parameters specify the behavior of twin radiation and the acoustic oscillations of twin baryons, which lead to testable effects on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large-scale structure (LSS). While collider searches can only probe the twin VEV, through a fit to cosmological data we show that the existing CMB (Planck18 TTTEEE+lowE+lowT+lensing) and LSS (KV450) data already provide useful constraints on the remaining MTH parameters. Additionally, we show that the presence of twin radiation in this model can raise the Hubble constant H$_{0}$ while the scattering twin baryons can reduce the matter fluctuations S$_{8}$, which helps to relax the observed H$_{0}$ and S$_{8}$ tensions simultaneously. This scenario is different from the typical ΛCDM + ΔN$_{eff}$ model, in which extra radiation helps with the Hubble tension but worsens the S$_{8}$ tension. For instance, when including the SH0ES and 2013 Planck SZ data in the fit, we find that a universe with ≳ 20% of the dark matter comprised of twin baryons is preferred over ΛCDM by ~ 4σ. If the twin sector is indeed responsible for resolving the H$_{0}$ and S$_{8}$ tensions, future measurements from the Euclid satellite and CMB Stage 4 experiment will further measure the twin parameters to O(1 - 10%)-level precision. Our study demonstrates how models with hidden naturalness can potentially be probed using precision cosmological data.

Traversable wormhole solution with a background Kalb–Ramond field

Highlights: • Wormhole solutions of gravity in a Lorentz breaking symmetry scenario are found. • Light deflection by the wormhole in a Lorentz breaking symmetry scenario is calculated. • It is shown the influence of the vacuum expectation value of a Kalb–Ramond field in deflection of light. We obtain a static spherically symmetric wormhole solution due to the vacuum expectation value (vev) of a Kalb–Ramond field. The Kalb–Ramond (vev) is a background tensor field which produces a local Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) of spacetime. Considering a non-minimal coupling between the Kalb–Ramond (vev) and the Ricci tensor, we found an exact traversable wormhole solution sustained by matter sources with a negative isotropic pressure. The matter source satisfies the energy conditions at the throat for particular choices of the LSB parameter. Moreover, we employ the Gauss–Bonnet method to analyze the deflection angle of light in the weak limit approximation.

Spontaneously broken (-1)-form U(1) symmetries

Spontaneous breaking of symmetries leads to universal phenomena. We extend this notion to(-1) ( − 1 ) -form U(1) symmetries. The spontaneous breaking is diagnosed by a dependence of the vacuum energy on a constant background field\theta θ , which can be probed by the topological susceptibility. This leads to a reinterpretation of the Strong CP problem as arising from a spontaneously broken instantonic symmetry in QCD. We discuss how known solutions to the problem are unified in this framework and explore some, so far unsuccessful, attempts to find new solutions.

Gluonic Structure from Instantons

The instanton vacuum provides an effective description of chiral symmetry breaking by local topological fluctuations of the gauge fields, as observed in lattice QCD simulations. The resulting effective dynamics at momenta below 1/$\bar{ρ}$ ≈ 0.6 GeV explains the basic features of light-quark correlation functions and is used extensively in studies of hadron structure. The instanton fields also make definite contributions to the gluonic structure of light hadrons, as expressed in the matrix elements of composite quark– gluon or gluon operators. The article reviews the gluonic structure of light hadrons (nucleon, pion) induced by instantons. This includes: (i) twist-2 parton distributions and momentum sum rule; (ii) twist-3 angular momentum and spin-orbit interactions; (iii) twist-3 and twist-4 quark–gluon correlations and power corrections; (iv) trace anomaly and hadron mass decomposition; (v) scalar gluon form factors and mechanical properties; (vi) axial anomaly and pseudoscalar gluon form factors. It also discusses possible further applications of the methods and recent developments including gauge field configurations beyond instantons.

Heating and Thermal Control of Brazing Technique to Break Contamination Path for Potential Mars Sample Return

The potential return of Mars sample material is of great interest to the planetary science community, as it would enable extensive analysis of samples with highly sensitive laboratory instruments. It is important to make sure such a mission concept would not bring any living microbes, which may possibly exist on Mars, back to Earth’s environment. In order to ensure the isolation of Mars microbes from Earth’s Atmosphere, a brazing sealing and sterilizing technique was proposed to break the Mars-to-Earth contamination path. Effectively, heating the brazing zone in high vacuum space and controlling the sample temperature for integrity are key challenges to the implementation of this technique. The break-the-chain procedures for container configurations, which are being considered, were simulated by multi-physics finite element models. Different heating methods including induction and resistive/radiation were evaluated. The temperature profiles of Martian samples in a proposed container structure were predicted. The results show that the sealing and sterilizing process can be controlled such that the samples temperature is maintained below the level that may cause damage, and that the brazing technique is a feasible approach to breaking the contamination path.

Safety flywheel

An inertial energy storage device is disclosed which uses flywheel made of flexible material such as a twisted rope ring. A small number of the strands of the rope ring have a tensile strength that is lower than that of most of the other strands so that should any of these strands fail, they will begin to whiplash allowing such a failure to be detected and braked before a castastrophic failure occurs. This accomplished by the inclusion of glass tubes located around the periphery of the flywheel. The tubes are in communication with a braking fluid reservoir. The flywheel and glass tubes are enclosed within a vacuum-tight housing. The whiplashing of a broken strand breaks one or more glass tubes. This causes the housing to be flooded with the braking fluid thereby braking the rotation of the flywheel.

Modeling the densification of metal matrix composite monotape

We present a first model that enables prediction of the density (and its time evolution) of a monotape lay-up subjected to a hot isostatic or vacuum hot pressing consolidation cycle. Our approach is to break down the complicated (and probabilistic) consolidation problem into simple, analyzable parts and to combine them in a way that correctly represents the statistical aspects of the problem, the change in the problem's interior geometry, and the evolving contributions of the different deformation mechanisms. The model gives two types of output. One is in the form of maps showing the relative density dependence upon pressure, temperature, and time for step function temperature and pressure cycles. They are useful for quickly determining the best place to begin developing an optimized process. The second gives the evolution of density over time for any (arbitrary) applied temperature and pressure cycle. This has promise for refining process cycles and possibly for process control. Examples of the models application are given for Ti3Al + Nb, gamma TiAl, Ti6Al4V, and pure aluminum.

Gravitational waves from first-order cosmological phase transitions

A first-order cosmological phase transition that proceeds through the nucleation and collision of true-vacuum bubbles is a potent source of gravitational radiation. Possibilities for such include first-order inflation, grand-unified-theory-symmetry breaking, and electroweak-symmetry breaking. We have calculated gravity-wave production from the collision of two scalar-field vacuum bubbles, and, using an approximation based upon these results, from the collision of 20 to 30 vacuum bubbles. We present estimates of the relic background of gravitational waves produced by a first-order phase transition.

Breaking mirror twin color

We investigate simple extensions of the Mirror Twin Higgs model in which the twin color gauge symmetry and the discrete Z2 mirror symmetry are spontaneously broken. This is accomplished in a minimal way by introducing a single new colored triplet, sextet, or octet scalar field and its twin along with a suitable scalar potential. This spontaneous Z2 breaking allows for a phenomenologically viable alignment of the electroweak vacuum, and leads to dramatic differences between the visible and mirror sectors with regard to the residual gauge symmetries at low energies, color confinement scales, and particle spectra. In particular, several of our models feature a remnant SU(2) or SO(3) twin color gauge symmetry with a very low confinement scale in comparison to ΛQCD. Furthermore, couplings between the colored scalar and matter provide a new dynamical source of twin fermion masses, and due to the mirror symmetry, these lead to a variety of correlated visible sector effects that can be probed through precision measurements and collider searches.

Explicit soft supersymmetry breaking in the heterotic M-theory B - L MSSM

The strongly coupled heterotic M-theory vacuum for both the observable and hidden sectors of the B - L MSSM theory is reviewed, including a discussion of the “bundle” constraints that both the observable sector SU(4) vector bundle and the hidden sector bundle induced from a single line bundle must satisfy. Gaugino condensation is then introduced within this context, and the hidden sector bundles that exhibit gaugino condensation are presented. The condensation scale is computed, singling out one line bundle whose associated condensation scale is low enough to be compatible with the energy scales available at the LHC. The corresponding region of Kähler moduli space where all bundle constraints are satisfied is presented. The generic form of the moduli dependent F-terms due to a gaugino superpotential — which spontaneously break N = 1 supersymmetry in this sector — is presented and then given explicitly for the unique line bundle associated with the low condensation scale. The moduli-dependent coefficients for each of the gaugino and scalar field soft supersymmetry breaking terms are computed leading to a low-energy effective Lagrangian for the observable sector matter fields. We then show that at a large number of points in Kähler moduli space that satisfy all “bundle” constraints, these coefficients are initial conditions for the renormalization group equations which, at low energy, lead to completely realistic physics satisfying all phenomenological constraints. Finally, we show that a substantial number of these initial points also satisfy a final constraint arising from the quadratic Higgs-Higgs conjugate soft supersymmetry breaking term.

Laser Cutting of Anorthosite and Norite in Vacuum

Lasers have previously been evaluated to cut and drill through rock in high pressure and atmospheric conditions to support deep drilling for oil & gas, as well as breaking or cutting rock near the surface. This research evaluates using lasers to cut rocks in a lunar environment. Anorthosite and norite samples were cut in a rough vacuum (<1 Torr) environment using a continuous wave (CW) 2 kW laser. Power and cutting speed are varied to control the total power input. In total 30, 38mm cuts are performed with power levels ranging from 25% (525 W) to 100% (2100 W) and total energy inputs from 0.090 – 4.34 kJ/cm. The cuts are bisected and inspected with optical and scanning electron microscopy. The bisected areas are measured to determine the specific energy for material removal (J/mm 3 ) and the extent of the heat affected zone.

Cavitation model of the inflationary stage of Big Bang

In this study, we propose a model for the initial stage of the development of the universe analogous to cavitation in a liquid in a negative pressure field. It is assumed that at the stage of inflation, multiple breaks of the metric occur with the formation of areas of physical vacuum in which the generation of matter occurs. The proposed model explains the large-scale isotropy of the universe without ultrafast inflationary expansion and the emergence of a large-scale cellular (cluster) structure, as a result of the development of cavitation ruptures of a false vacuum. It is shown that the cavitation model can be considered on par with (or as an alternative to) the generally accepted inflationary multiverse model of the Big Bang.

Cosmology of biased discrete symmetry breaking

The cosmological consequences of spontaneous breaking of an approximate discrete symmetry are studied. The breaking leads to formation of proto-domains of false and true vacuum separated by domain walls of thickness determined by the mass scale of the model. The cosmological evolution of the walls is extremely sensitive to the magnitude of the biasing; several scenarios are possible, depending on the interplay between the surface tension on the walls and the volume pressure from the biasing. Walls may disappear almost immediately after they form, or may live long enough to dominate the energy density of the Universe and cause power-law inflation. Limits are obtained on the biasing that characterizes each possible scenario.
