Discrete-time entropy formulation of optimal and adaptive control problems

The discrete-time version of the entropy formulation of optimal control of problems developed by G. N. Saridis (1988) is discussed. Given a dynamical system, the uncertainty in the selection of the control is characterized by the probability distribution (density) function which maximizes the total entropy. The equivalence between the optimal control problem and the optimal entropy problem is established, and the total entropy is decomposed into a term associated with the certainty equivalent control law, the entropy of estimation, and the so-called equivocation of the active transmission of information from the controller to the estimator. This provides a useful framework for studying the certainty equivalent and adaptive control laws.

Design of a compensation for an ARMA model of a discrete time system

The design of an optimal dynamic compensator for a multivariable discrete time system is studied. Also the design of compensators to achieve minimum variance control strategies for single input single output systems is analyzed. In the first problem the initial conditions of the plant are random variables with known first and second order moments, and the cost is the expected value of the standard cost, quadratic in the states and controls. The compensator is based on the minimum order Luenberger observer and it is found optimally by minimizing a performance index. Necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality of the compensator are derived. The second problem is solved in three different ways; two of them working directly in the frequency domain and one working in the time domain. The first and second order moments of the initial conditions are irrelevant to the solution. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the compensator to minimize the variance of the output.

Discrete-time model reduction in limited frequency ranges

A mathematical formulation for model reduction of discrete time systems such that the reduced order model represents the system in a particular frequency range is discussed. The algorithm transforms the full order system into balanced coordinates using frequency weighted discrete controllability and observability grammians. In this form a criterion is derived to guide truncation of states based on their contribution to the frequency range of interest. Minimization of the criterion is accomplished without need for numerical optimization. Balancing requires the computation of discrete frequency weighted grammians. Close form solutions for the computation of frequency weighted grammians are developed. Numerical examples are discussed to demonstrate the algorithm.

The application of the analog signal to discrete time interval converter to the signal conditioner power supplies

The Analog Signal to Discrete Time Interval Converter microminiaturized module was utilized to control the signal conditioner power supplies. The multi-loop control provides outstanding static and dynamic performance characteristics, exceeding those generally associated with single-loop regulators. Eight converter boards, each containing three independent dc to dc converter, were built, tested, and delivered.

An algebraic structure of discrete-time biaffine systems

New results on the realization of finite-dimensional, discrete-time, internally biaffine systems are presented in this paper. The external behavior of such systems is described by multiaffine functions and the state space is constructed via Nerode equivalence relations. We prove that the state space is an affine space. An algorithm which amounts to choosing a frame for the affine space is presented. Our algorithm reduces in the linear and bilinear case to a generalization of algorithms existing in the literature. Explicit existence criteria for span-canonical realizations as well as an affine isomorphism theorem are given.

Design of nonlinear discrete-time controllers using a parameter space sampling procedure

The design of nonlinear discrete-time controllers is investigated where the control algorithm assumes a special form. State-dependent control actions are obtained from tables whose values are the design parameters. A new design methodology capable of dealing with nonlinear systems containing parameter uncertainty is used to obtain the controller design. Various controller strategies are presented and illustrated through an example.

Discrete-time demodulation of continuous-time signals.

Nonlinear stochastic estimation theory is applied to the problem of obtaining discrete-time demodulator structures for the common types of analog communication signals. A stochastic communication model is presented that can be treated with current results in estimation theory. Approximate algorithms are developed for the estimation problem that yield mathematically realizable receiver structures for the cases of AM, PC, and FM. The digital receivers yield performance characteristics that compare favorably with those of their analog counterparts.

Introduction to charge transfer device discrete time processing

This tutorial paper reviews some of the advantages and disadvantages of a discrete time representation of a signal. Also reviewed are some of the recent theoretical advances in digital signal processing which can be implemented by the use of charge transfer signal processing devices. In particular, the design and implementation of transversal filters and spectrum analyzers will be discussed.

Maneuvering of large flexible space antennas using optimal discrete-time controllers

The problem of maneuvering large space structures is formulated as a discrete-time, finite-duration optimal regulator problem. Two methods are considered for minimizing the elastic motion during the maneuver. The methods are applied to retargetting maneuver of a large space antenna, and the results are compared with those obtained using bang-bang control. The optimal regulator designed using the model error sensitivity supression method gives the best performance.

Discrete-time infinity control problem with measurement feedback

The paper is concerned with the discrete-time H(sub infinity) control problem with measurement feedback. The authors extend previous results by having weaker assumptions on the system parameters. The authors also show explicitly the structure of H(sub infinity) controllers. Finally, they show that it is in certain cases possible, without loss of performance, to reduce the dynamical order of the controllers.

On the Markov Property for Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems with Markovian Inputs

The behavior of a general hybrid system in discrete-time can be represented by a non-linear difference equation x(k + 1) = Fk(x(k), theta(k)), where theta(k) is assumed to be a finite-state Markov chain. An important step in the stability analysis of these systems is to establish the Markov property of (x(k), theta(k)). There are, however, no complete proofs of this property which are simple to understand. This paper aims to correct this problem by presenting a complete and explicit proof, which uses only fundamental measure-theoretical concepts.

Discrete time domain modelling and analysis of dc-dc converters with continuous and discontinuous inductor current

Using discrete time state variable representation, a generalized computer-aided modeling and analysis of dc-dc converters is presented. The methodology provides exact modeling and is applicable to all types of power stages and duty-cycle control, including continuous and discontinuous inductor current operation. Converter stability, transient behavior and audio susceptibility can be analytically evaluated and predicted. The generalized theory of the proposed approach to converter modeling and analysis is presented first, followed by a demonstrative example applying the theory to a constant frequency buck converter operating in continuous and discontinuous inductor current mode. Excellent agreement with laboratory test data has been observed.

The discrete-time compensated Kalman filter

A suboptimal dynamic compensator to be used in conjunction with the ordinary discrete-time Kalman filter is derived. The resultant compensated Kalman filter has the property that steady-state bias estimation errors, resulting from modelling errors, are eliminated. The implementation of the compensated Kalman filter involves the use of accumulators in the residual channels in addition to the nominal dynamic model of the stochastic system.

Improving stability margins in discrete-time LQG controllers

Some of the problems are discussed which are encountered in the design of discrete-time stochastic controllers for problems that may adequately be described by the Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) assumptions; namely, the problems of obtaining acceptable relative stability, robustness, and disturbance rejection properties. A dynamic compensator is proposed to replace the optimal full state feedback regulator gains at steady state, provided that all states are measurable. The compensator increases the stability margins at the plant input, which may possibly be inadequate in practical applications. Though the optimal regulator has desirable properties the observer based controller as implemented with a Kalman filter, in a noisy environment, has inadequate stability margins. The proposed compensator is designed to match the return difference matrix at the plant input to that of the optimal regulator while maintaining the optimality of the state estimates as directed by the measurement noise characteristics.
