Toward scalable quantum computations of atomic nuclei

We solve the nuclear two-body and three-body bound states via quantum simulations of pionless effective field theory on a lattice in position space. While the employed lattice remains small, the usage of local Hamiltonians including two- and three-body forces ensures that the number of Pauli terms scales linearly with increasing numbers of lattice sites. We use an adaptive ansatz grown from unitary coupled cluster theory to parametrize the ground states of the deuteron and 3 He, compute their corresponding energies, and analyze the scaling of the required computational resources. Our quantum simulations reproduce exact benchmarks for 2 H and 3 He within 100 keV, requiring at most 30 layers in the ansatz and thus resulting in modest circuit depths. Additionally, we find the number of shots required to reach a given precision scales linearly in the lattice size and more mildly in the system size. Furthermore, based on the agreement with exact benchmarks and mild scaling, we conclude that this can be an efficient, scalable approach for quantum computations of nuclear ground states, particularly to prepare initial states for quantum phase estimation or other filtering algorithms.

Right-handed Dirac and Majorana neutrinos at Belle II

We assess the ability of the Belle II experiment to probe the Dirac or Majorana nature of a massive right-handed neutrino (RHN) N in the MeV to GeV mass range. We consider the production and decay of RHNs to proceed via new interactions described by the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) extended with right-handed neutrino fields (SMNEFT), and not via mass mixing with active neutrinos. We find that Belle II has the potential to discover N if kinematically accessible. We perform detailed simulations of the angular distributions of lepton pairs from the decay of N produced in two-body and three-body decays of B mesons. We show that for m N above 100 MeV, Belle II can distinguish between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos at more than the 5σ CL for most operators, and the combination of the production and decay operators can be identified from the subsequent decay of the heavy neutrino. Also, the production operators can be identified using three-body B meson decay for any m N if the B → DℓN and B → D * ℓN events can be well separated.

van der Waals interaction as the starting point for an effective field theory

We consider the system of three 4 He atoms to assess whether a pure van der Waals potential can be used as a starting point for an effective field theory to describe three-body processes in ultracold atomic systems. Using a long-range van der Waals interaction in combination with short-distance two-body counterterms, we analyze the dependence of two- and three-body observables on the short-distance regulator that is required due to the singular nature of the van der Waals interaction. We benchmark our approach with results obtained with the realistic 4 He- 4 He LM2M2 potential and find good agreement. We furthermore show that in this effective field theory approach no three-body force is required at leading order and that universal van der Waals physics leads to a universal correlation between three-body observables in the absence of an Efimov three-body parameter.

The Thomas theorem and the Efimov States within a generalized Bohr model

Using a generalized Bohr model and the hyper-spherical formalism for a three-body system, we derive the universal energy functions. We apply our model to 4He atom where only the Coulomb potential is dominant and find that its binding energy is well reproduced (less than 5.5% difference). Later, we focus on the equal mass three-body systems and derive the Thomas theorem assuming a simple interaction depending on the range of the potential. We discuss the conditions for which an unbound two-body system produces a bound three-body system and apply our model to 4He and triton atoms as well as to the triton nucleus. Using their scattering lengths and effective ranges, we are able to reproduce the two-body or the three-body binding energies (less than 5% difference) with only one parameter fitted. Prediction for excited (Efimov) levels are also given and in particular we demonstrate that for some hyper-angles two equal minima appear which indicate a phase (shape) transition similar to the Landau's theory of phase transition. We suggest that the observed excited levels in two different experiments for the triton nucleus are indeed Efimov levels and there may be more surprises.

A Formulation of the Many-Body Expansion (MBE) for Periodic Systems: Application to Several Ice Phases

A new formulation of the many-body expansion (MBE) for periodic systems, based on their inherent translational symmetry, is introduced and applied to 7 ice polymorphs. This new formulation is built via a hierarchical procedure connecting gas phase unit cells over finite supercells to infinite solids. For finite supercells, it is demonstrated that this method successfully recovers the energetics while reducing the scaling of the calculation of the many-body terms by a factor of ~N, where N is the system size. Furthermore, the proposed framework delineates a straightforward way to obtain properties of macroscopic systems in the limit of an infinite cell. For periodic systems, the success of this approach is demonstrated by showing that the lattice energies computed (up to the 4-th order in the MBE) reproduce the lattice energies obtained using periodic boundary conditions with an Ewald summation for 7 polymorphs of ice (Ih, II, VIII, IX, XIII, XIV, XV). This development makes it possible to quantify, for the first time, the many-body contributions to the lattice energy of various ice polymorphs. The many-body (three-body and higher) interactions were found to vary significantly among the 7 ice phases, amounting between 7-24% of the total lattice energies. So, this development opens the door for obtaining insights into solid-state properties, while leveraging the computational benefits of the MBE.

Photodissociation dynamics of the tert -butyl perthiyl radical

Here, the photodissociation dynamics of the tert-butyl perthiyl (t-BuSS) radical are investigated by fast-beam coincidence translational spectroscopy. A fast (6 keV-8 keV) beam of neutral t-BuSS radicals is produced via photodetachment of the corresponding anion, followed by photodissociation at 248 nm (5.00 eV) or 193 nm (6.42 eV) and coincident detection of the neutral products. Photofragment mass and translational energy distributions are obtained at both wavelengths. At 248 nm, the dominant product channel (90%) is found to be S loss, with a product translational energy distribution that peaks close to the maximum available energy and an anisotropic photofragment angular distribution, indicating dissociation along a repulsive excited state. A minor channel (10%) leading to the formation of S 2 + t-Bu is also observed. At 193 nm, both two- and three-body dissociation are observed. The formation of S 2 + t-Bu is the dominant two-body product channel, with multiple electronic states of the S 2 molecule produced via excited-state dissociation processes. The formation of S + t-BuS is a minor two-body channel at this dissociation energy. The three-body channels are S 2 + H + isobutene, S 2 + CH 3 + propene, and S + SH + isobutene. The first two of these channels result from a sequential dissociation process in which the loss of S 2 from t-BuSS results in ground-state t-Bu with sufficient internal energy to undergo secondary fragmentation. The third three-body channel, S + SH + isobutene, is attributed to the loss of internally excited HS 2 from t-BuSS, which then rapidly dissociates to form S + SH in an asynchronous concerted dissociation process.

Nuclear multipole responses from chiral effective field theory interactions

We probe nuclear multipole resonances in the framework of the random-phase approximation by using the interaction obtained from the chiral effective field theory. The three-nucleon force is included in a form of the in-medium two-nucleon interaction, which was derived from the chiral three-nucleon force. The isoscalar monopole, isoscalar dipole, isovector dipole, and isoscalar quadrupole resonances of the closed-shell 56,68,78 Ni have been investigated. The calculations reasonably reproduce the experimental multipole resonances of 56,68 Ni, and well describe the pygmy dipole resonance and dipole polarizability measured in 68 Ni. The multipole resonances of 78 Ni, including pygmy dipole resonance and dipole polarizability, are predicted. The detailed effects of the tensor force and three-body force are analyzed by dissecting the chiral interaction. In this work, we find that in general the tensor force effect on electric giant resonances is not as significant as the effect from the three-body force, although the tensor force provides more than half of the binding energy. The effect from three-body force is strong in light nuclei. Particularly, three-body force is crucial for the formation of the pygmy resonance in calculations.

Computational approaches for three-nucleon systems

Highlights: • Pedagogical review on the computational aspects of the three-nucleon system. • Detailed numerical steps for solving the three-body problem. • Three-nucleon binding and scattering for two different separable potentials. • Triton binding with partial-wave projected chiral potentials. We revisit the three-nucleon system with two kinds of nucleon–nucleon interactions: separable potentials and chiral forces, showing the computational aspects in detail. We start with S-wave separable potentials for which there are simplified forms for the Faddeev equations describing the scattering and binding of three nucleons. We then discuss the partial-wave projected case with a chiral potential considering only one channel so that the computational details can be clearly shown.

Many-body expansion for light nuclear systems

Here we extend the many-body expansion (MBE), previously applied to hydrogen bonded and molecular systems, to the light nuclear systems 3 H and 3 He by considering the nucleonic degrees of freedom as fundamental in the expansion. The analysis is based on the Pauli nucleonic dynamics (PND) model, a simple antisymmetrized dynamical code, inspired by the sophisticated constrained molecular dynamics (CoMD) model. The total energy of the 2 H nucleus is calculated with this model at -2.312 MeV, which is within 4% of the experimental value of -2.225 MeV. The application of the MBE yields results for the three-body term in the 3 H nucleus that is comparable with previous estimates, while it is reported for the first time for the nucleus of 3 He . The energies of 3 H and 3 He that include the sum of the one- and two-body terms with the model are - 6.97 ± 0.21 MeV and - 6.19 ± 0.21 MeV and the three-body terms, estimated from the difference of the sum of the one- and two-body terms from the experimentally measured energies, are -1.51 ± 0.21 MeV and -1.53 ± 0.21 MeV, respectively. The MBE for the 3 H and 3 He nuclei is qualitatively similar to the one previously reported for the water trimer: the two- and three-body terms are negative with the latter amounting to ~3% of the former. Additionally, the three-body terms correspond to about 16–23% of the total energy of the bound systems, a percentage that is also comparable to the one in the water trimer (17%). In this manner, the MBE analysis can be applied to light nuclear systems following the same protocol as the one that has been previously extensively used for hydrogen bonded molecular systems.

A systematic analysis of phase stability in refractory high entropy alloys utilizing linear and non-linear cluster expansion models

We report that obtaining surrogate models for various types of materials has long been a goal of computational material scientists and physicists, as they allow the calculation of thermodynamic quantities and properties of interest far more efficiently than DFT. Many surrogate models, including interatomic potentials generated by machine learning algorthims and cluster expansions, rely on incorporating many-body interactions such as three-body or four-body interactions. When utilizing machine learning algorithms for interatomic potentials, it is common to start with two-body interactions and systematically include three- and four-body clusters to improve the fit, stopping when including the additional clusters does not measurably change the predictive power of the model. In cluster expansions for FCC and related lattices, it is often enough to include mostly two-body interactions and a handful of three-body interactions. However, it remains to be seen whether those will be enough in the case of lattices with a lower packing fraction, such as BCC.

Evolution of Efimov states

The Efimov phenomenon manifests itself as an emergent discrete scaling symmetry in the quantum three-body problem. In the unitarity limit, it leads to an infinite tower of three-body bound states with energies forming a geometric sequence. Here in this work, we study the evolution of these so-called Efimov states using relativistic scattering theory. We identify them as poles of the three-particle S matrix and trace their trajectories in the complex energy plane as they evolve from virtual states through bound states to resonances. We dial the scattering parameters toward the unitarity limit and observe the emergence of the universal scaling of energies and couplings - a behavior known from the non-relativistic case. Interestingly, we find that Efimov resonances follow unusual, cyclic trajectories accumulating at the three-body threshold and then disappear at some values of the two-body scattering length. We propose a partial resolution to this ?missing states? problem.

Analytic continuation of the relativistic three-particle scattering amplitudes

We investigate the relativistic scattering of three identical scalar bosons interacting via pair-wise interactions. Extending techniques from the nonrelativistic three-body scattering theory, we provide a detailed and general prescription for solving and analytically continuing integral equations describing the three-body reactions. We use these techniques to study a system with zero angular momenta described by a single scattering length leading to a bound state in a two-body subchannel. We obtain bound-state-particle and three-particle amplitudes in the previously unexplored kinematical regime; in particular, for real energies below elastic thresholds and complex energies in the physical and unphysical Riemann sheets. We extract positions of three-particle bound-states that agree with previous finite-volume studies, providing further evidence for the consistency of the relativistic finite-volume three-body quantization conditions. We also determine previously unobserved virtual bound states in this theory. Lastly, we find numerical evidence of the breakdown of the two-body finite-volume formalism in the vicinity of the left-hand cuts and argue for the generalization of the existing formalism.

Uncertainties in ab initio nuclear structure calculations with chiral interactions

We present theoretical ground state energies and their uncertainties for p -shell nuclei obtained from chiral effective field theory internucleon interactions as a function of chiral order, fitted to two- and three-body data only. We apply a Similary Renormalization Group transformation to improve the numerical convergence of the many-body calculations, and discuss both the numerical uncertainties arising from basis truncations and those from omitted induced many-body forces, as well as chiral truncation uncertainties. With complete Next-to-Next-to-Leading (N 2 LO) order two- and three-body interactions, we find significant overbinding for the ground states in the upper p -shell, but using higher-order two-body potentials, in combination with N 2 LO three-body forces, our predictions agree with experiment throughout the p -shell to within our combined estimated uncertainties. The uncertainties due to chiral order truncation are noticeably larger than the numerical uncertainties, but they are expected to become comparable to the numerical uncertainties at complete N 3 LO.

Study of the p-p-K + and p-p-K - dynamics using the femtoscopy technique

The interactions of kaons (K) and antikaons ($\bar{K}$ ) with few nucleons (N) were studied so far using kaonic atom data and measurements of kaon production and interaction yields in nuclei. Some details of the three-body $\bar{K}$NN and NN dynamics are still not well understood, mainly due to the overlap with multi-nucleon interactions in nuclei. An alternative method to probe the dynamics of three-body systems with kaons is to study the final state interaction within triplet of particles emitted in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, which are free from effects due to the presence of bound nucleons. This Letter reports the first femtoscopic study of p–p–K + and p–p–K - correlations measured in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The analysis shows that the measured p–p–K + and p–p–K - correlation functions can be interpreted in terms of pairwise interactions in the triplets, indicating that the dynamics of such systems is dominated by the two-body interactions without significant contributions from three-body effects or bound states.

Coupled-channel approach to isotensor π π π scattering from lattice QCD

The quest to understand three-body dynamics from first-principle QCD includes the study of nonresonant and resonant systems. The isospin I = 2 system is of particular interest having no three-body resonance but featuring a resonance in a subchannel, while also being a coupled-channel problem. In this study, we calculate the finite-volume spectrum from lattice QCD at two different pion masses, map the amplitude to the infinite volume through a generalized Finite-Volume Unitarity three-body quantization condition, investigate the limit of a narrow ρ , and compare with an effective Lagrangian prediction at leading order. Chiral extrapolations between different pion masses are performed.

Effective mass of α-cluster in 12C nucleus

Based on the effective-mass concept, we perform the Faddeev calculations for a low-lying spectrum of 3[Formula: see text] states in [Formula: see text]C nucleus. A three-body potential is used to describe the known breaking of the 3[Formula: see text]-cluster structure in the nucleus. We show that the contribution of the three-body potential to the Hamiltonian can be compensated by increasing/decreasing the [Formula: see text]-particle free mass. The effective-mass values are adjusted to reproduce the experimental data for the [Formula: see text]C nucleus. The energy dependence of the effective mass and the correlation to a three-body potential are discussed. We show that the coupling between the [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]) levels forms a specific picture of anti-crossing on the energy/effective-mass plane.

In-medium similarity renormalization group with flowing 3-body operators, and approximations thereof

Here, we explore the impact of retaining three-body operators within the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG), as well as various approximations schemes. After studying two toy problems, identical fermions with a contact interaction and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, we employ the valence-space formulation of the IMSRG to investigate the even- A carbon isotopes with a chiral two-body potential. We find that retaining only those commutators expressions that scale as N 7 provides an excellent approximation of the full three-body treatment.
