U.S. Industry Opportunities for Advanced Nuclear Technology Development Phase II (Final Report)

This limited scope study aims at preserving the results of experimental programs for the safety of light water cooled and advanced reactors by locating and documenting, to the extent possible, where the experimental test information for these programs has been archived. The Light Water Reactor Data Preservation Activity Team initially identified seven (7) experimental programs, exceeding the required five (5) in the scope of work, which were determined to be “at risk” of potentially losing valuable data. The seven (7) experimental programs/subject areas identified are (descriptions of each experiment/experience are provided in Section 3.0): 1. FERMI-1 Reactor Accident 2. Fission Product Behavior During the In-Pile Severe Fuel Damage Test SFD I-4 3. Containment Iodine Computer Code Exercise Based on Radioiodine Test Facility (RTF) Experiment 4. Wide Range Piping Integrity Demonstration (WIND) Project 5. Iodine Chemical Research in Canada 6. High Temperature Fission Product Chemistry and Transport in Steam 7. Anything related to radioactive Methyl Iodide.

U.S. Industry Opportunities for Advanced Nuclear Technology Development (Phase III)

This is the third phase of a work scope which has been focused on providing a framework for and preserving key experimental programs and experiences which are critical to the licensing basis of currently operating nuclear reactors or which could be used in the safety basis for the next generation of reactors. The first phase of this effort, documented in Reference 1, focused on compiling a list of key experimental programs through an international survey of reactor safety professionals working in licensing, design, and academia. The second phase in this effort, documented in Reference 2, focused on creating a searchable database framework in which to organize the results from the international survey and to perform detailed research on several key programs to provide the framework for how to categorize the references which could be located. The purpose of the third phase is to perform a high-level research effort on each experiment/experience and to determine if sufficient data, reports, and results have already been captured to consider the program archived for future generators of nuclear professionals.

Identifying Controlling Variables Related to Mercury Vapor Concentrations in Legacy Facilities: SRNL Technology Development For D&D

A suite of sensor packages has been installed in the Alpha-4 facility at Y-12 and preliminary data analysis to isolate the controlling variables has been performed after two months of data collection. In line with the conceptual model presented in Section 2.0, the preliminary analysis has demonstrated that temperature, barometric pressure, and relative humidity are the key controlling variables for mercury vapor releases within the building. The data analysis will continue to explore these controlling variables across the next several months to capture a more complete picture of the annual change in meteorological conditions at Y-12.

Technology Development for ≥ 22.5% Efficient p-PERC Solar Cells

The overall objective of this program is to achieve ≥ 22.5 % bifacial p-type cell efficiencies by developing and implementing optimized homogeneous phosphorus (P) emitter on the front and tunnel oxide passivated boron (B) doped poly-Si contact (p-TOPCon) on the rear side, in combination with advanced fine-line screen-printing metallization and high bulk lifetime in the base material.

Advanced Systems Level Technology Development, Integration, and Demonstration for Efficient Class 8 Trucks (SuperTruck II)

The Cummins SuperTruck II program has completed the planned technical work on the project. This work includes Demonstrating 50% BTE on the engine-only, 55% BTE for an engine with waste heat recovery, and 125% improvement in vehicle freight efficiency. The engine system included a high efficiency diesel engine integrated with a state-of-the-art waste heat recovery (WHR) system and an advanced aftertreatment system capable of meeting the current emissions standards.

Triton: Environmental Monitoring Technology Development, Collision Risk Data Collection (Final Report)

In this project, we assembled a sensor suite that combines a scientific echosounder (sonar) system with video and acoustic cameras (secondary sensors). The sensor suite generates data that is amenable to automated target detection algorithms and can provide inputs to animal encounter models. We developed software (archiving software) to collect data simultaneously from all sensors in the suite, analyze the sonar data automatically in near real-time to identify time periods when targets of interest were present, and automatically archive data from the secondary sensors for these time periods. The product of the archiving software is a data set for the secondary sensors, containing data only for the times when targets of interest were determined to be present by the sonar. We performed controlled field testing to verify the operation of the sensor suite and the archiving software.

Safeguards Technology Development Program: FY 2024 Mid-Year Report

This project has 2 major thrusts and 2 minor tasks – One of the major ones is a scoping study for improving uranium isotopics by analyzing higher energy, lower yield U-235 gamma emissions. The second major one benefits past projects such as auto-enrichment, and peak-based analysis routines previously added to GADRAS-DRF [1]. The two minor tasks involve an in-person or remote GADRAS-DRF training for the IAEA, and characterizing detectors of interest.

Reliable Protection for an Inverter-Based Resources Dominant Grid: Technology Development and Field Demonstration

The project aimed to address the challenges posed by the rapid growth of inverter-based resources (IBR) such as solar, wind, and battery storage, which have fundamentally changed fault behavior, system strength, and protection performance in bulk power systems. Traditional protection schemes, designed for synchronous generator-dominated grids, are inadequate under high IBR penetration. Overall, the project materially advances protection modeling and simulation capabilities needed to maintain reliable grid protection under high IBR penetration. The results build utility confidence in operating power systems safely and reliably across a wide range of generation mixes, supporting grid modernization goals.
