Wet to Dry Controls Lanthanide Scandate Synthesis

The choice of temperature and gas conditions used in a water pressure-controlled reactor is guided by density functional theory (DFT) to synthesize nearly phase pure lanthanide scandate nanoparticles (LnScO 3 , Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Gd). In this synthetic method, low water vapor partial pressures, well below water’s gas liquidus, inhibit particle growth, while an excess of water vapor results in undesired rare earth hydroxide and oxyhydroxide secondary phases. The optimal humidity for high-purity LnScO 3 particle synthesis is shown to vary with the lanthanide; DFT is used to calculate the thermodynamics of secondary phase formation for each lanthanide tested, such that the role of water vapor may be quantified and used to maintain phase purity (greater than 96 mol%) across the series. Furthermore, the combination of thermodynamic calculation and experimental confirmation with this pressure-controlled reactor provides an opportunity to explore analogous syntheses of other inorganic perovskite nanoparticles.

Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Polymer Precursors to Li x PON and Li x SiPON Glasses: Materials That Enable All-Solid-State Batteries (ASBs)

LiPON-like glasses that form lithium dendrite impenetrable interfaces between lithium battery components are enabling materials that may replace liquid electrolytes permitting production of all-solid-state batteries (ASBs). Unfortunately, to date, such materials are introduced only via gas-phase deposition. Furthermore, we demonstrate the design and synthesis of easily scaled, lowtemperature, low-cost, solution-processable inorganic polymers containing LiPON/LiSiPON elements. OPCl 3 and hexachlorophosphazene [Cl 2 P=N] 3 provide starting points for elaboration using MNH 2 (M = Li/Na) or (Me 3 Si)NH followed by reaction with controlled amounts of LiNH 2 to produce oligomers/polymers with molecular weights (MWs) ≈1–2 kDa characterized by multinuclear NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization (MALDI)-time-of-flight (ToF) offering stabilities to 150–200 °C and ceramic yields (800 °C) of 50–60%. 7 Li NMR suggests that precursor-bound Li + dissociates easily, beneficial for electrochemical applications. XPS shows higher N/P ratios (1–3) than via gas-phase methods (<1) correlating N/P ratios, 7 Li shifts, and Li + conductivities. Li 2 SiPHN offers the highest ambient conductivity of 3 × 10 –1 mS cm –1 at 400 °C/2 h/N 2 .

Thermal Activation of Zirconium(IV) Acetylacetonate Catalysts to Enhance Polyurethane Synthesis and Reprocessing

Carbamate formation and exchange catalysts enable efficient polyurethane (PU) manufacturing, as well as emerging recycling and reprocessing methods for PU thermosets. Zirconium β-diketonate complexes, such as Zr acetylacetonate [Zr(acac) 4 ], are effective alternatives to toxic organotin catalysts that have been used for PU reprocessing. Here, we report that Zr(acac) 4 undergoes a thermally activated process in the PU network during reprocessing that transforms it into a more active carbamate exchange catalyst. This process is associated with the irreversible loss of acetylacetonate ligands and is not observed for the more sterically hindered Zr 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione [Zr(tmhd) 4 ] complex. Crossover experiments between PU thermoplastics indicated enhanced carbamate exchange after the thermal activation of Zr(acac) 4 in the presence of one of the PUs, whereas a sample of Zr(acac) 4 activated in the absence of the PU had no catalytic activity. Thermal gravimetric analysis suggested that this process is associated with the loss of one protonated acac ligand. Stress relaxation analysis of PU thermosets indicated a distinct change in the characteristic relaxation time associated with the thermal activation of Zr(acac) 4 at temperatures above 140 °C; no such change was observed for samples reprocessed using Zr(tmhd) 4 . Density functional theory and molecular experiments suggest that irreversible ligand exchange of acac with alkoxide or carbamate reduces the activation energy for urethane formation and reversion. Furthermore, the Zr(acac) 4 catalyst activated in the presence of a PU’s polyol precursor provided more porous and less dense PU foams compared to those made using the unactivated Zr(acac) 4 catalyst. Furthermore, these findings are important for developing improved PU synthesis and recycling processes. Thermally activating a catalyst during reprocessing may provide more nuanced control of the in-use and reprocessing characteristics of PU thermosets.

Synthesis, Magnetic Properties, and Electronic Structure of Magnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Se 4

The intrinsic magnetic topological insulators MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 2 Se 4 support novel topological states related to symmetry breaking by magnetic order. Unlike MnBi 2 Te 4 , the study of MnBi 2 Se 4 has been inhibited by the lack of bulk crystals, as the van der Waals (vdW) crystal is not the thermodynamic equilibrium phase. In this study, we report the layer-by-layer synthesis of vdW MnBi 2 Se 4 crystals using nonequilibrium molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy identify a well-ordered vdW crystal with septuple-layer base units. The magnetic properties agree with the predicted layered antiferromagnetic ordering but disagree with its predicted out-of-plane orientation. Instead, our samples exhibit an easy-plane anisotropy, which is explained by including dipole–dipole interactions. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals the gapless Dirac-like surface state, which demonstrates that MnBi 2 Se 4 is a topological insulator above the magnetic-ordering temperature. These studies show that MnBi 2 Se 4 is a promising candidate for exploring rich topological phases of layered antiferromagnetic topological insulators.

Electrochemical Oxidation of Metal–Catechol Complexes as a New Synthesis Route to the High-Quality Ternary Photoelectrodes: A Case Study of Fe 2 TiO 5 Photoanodes

A new electrochemical, solution-based synthesis method to prepare uniform multinary oxide photoelectrodes was developed. This method involves solubilizing multiple metal ions as metal-catechol complexes in a pH condition where they are otherwise insoluble. When some of the catechol ligands are electrochemically oxidized, the remaining metal complexes become insoluble and are deposited as metal-catechol films on the working electrode. The resulting films are then annealed to form crystalline multinary oxide electrodes. Since catechol can serve as a complexing agent for a variety of metal ions, the newly developed method can be used to prepare a variety of multinary oxide films. In the present study, we used this method to prepare n-type Fe 2 TiO 5 photoanodes and investigated their photoelectrochemical properties for use in a photoelectrochemical water splitting cell. We also performed a computational investigation with two goals. The first goal was to investigate small electron polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 . Charge transport in most oxide photoelectrodes involves small polaron hopping, but small polaron formation in Fe 2 TiO 5 has not been examined prior to this work. The second goal was to investigate the effect of substitutional Sn doping at the Fe site on the electronic band structure and the carrier concentration of Fe 2 TiO 5 . Here, the combined experimental and theoretical results presented in this study greatly improve our understanding of Fe 2 TiO 5 for use as a photoanode.

Pathways of CdS Quantum Dot Degradation during Photocatalysis: Implications for Enhancing Stability and Efficiency for Organic Synthesis

CdS quantum dots (QDs) are widely employed as photocatalysts for reactions such as hydrogen evolution, and their degradation under aerobic aqueous conditions is well understood. However, despite evidence of aggregation and precipitation of CdS QD photocatalysts under anaerobic conditions, catalyst speciation and degradation under such conditions are underexplored. In this work, we demonstrate that during a reductive dehalogenation reaction, CdS QDs undergo surface ligand etching, which leads to a loss of colloidal stability and the formation of microcrystalline cadmium metal deposits. We hypothesize that this results from the accumulation of electrons on the QD surface. In addition, we demonstrate mild surface sulfur oxidation and the formation of an ammonium salt byproduct of a commonly used hole quencher. Furthermore, this work adds to our atomic-level understanding of the reactions occurring at the QD surface during photocatalysis, so that we can design more stable and efficient photocatalysts for organic synthesis.

Conjugated Metal–Organic Macrocycles: Synthesis, Characterization, and Electrical Conductivity

The dimensional reduction of solids into smaller fragments provides a route to achieve new physical properties and gain deeper insight into the extended parent structures. Here, we report the synthesis of CuTOTP-OR (TOTP n – = 2,3,6,7-tetraoxidotriphenylene), a family of copper-based macrocycles that resemble truncated fragments of the conductive 2D metal–organic framework Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene). The planar metal–organic macrocycles self-assemble into ordered nanotubes with internal diameters of ~2 nm and short interlayer distances of ~3.20 Å. Strong π–π stacking interactions between macrocycles facilitate out-of-plane charge transport, and pressed pellet conductivities as high as 2(1)×10 -3 S cm -1 are observed. Peripheral alkyl functionalization enhances solution processability and enables the fabrication of thin-film field-effect transistor devices. Ambipolar charge transport is observed, suggesting similar behavior may be operative in Cu 3 (HHTP) 2 . By coupling the attractive features of metal–organic frameworks with greater processability, these macrocycles enable facile device integration and a more nuanced understanding of out-of-plane charge transport in 2D conductive metal–organic frameworks.

Mechanochemical synthesis and structural analysis of trivalent lanthanide and uranium diphenylphosphinodiboranates

Phosphinodiboranates (H 3 BPR 2 BH 3 – ) are a class of borohydrides that have merited a reputation as weakly coordinating anions, which is attributed in part to the dearth of coordination complexes known with transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides. We recently reported how K(H 3 BP t Bu 2 BH 3 ) exhibits sluggish salt elimination reactivity with f-metal halides in organic solvents such as Et 2 O and THF. Here we report how this reactivity appears to be further attenuated in solution when the t Bu groups attached to phosphorus are exchanged for R = Ph or H, and we describe how mechanochemistry was used to overcome limited solution reactivity with K(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ). Grinding three equivalents of K(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) with UI 3 (THF) 4 or LnI 3 (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd) allowed homoleptic complexes with the empirical formulas U(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (1), Ce(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (2), Pr(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (3), and Nd(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (4) to be prepared and subsequently crystallized in good yields (50–80%). Single-crystal XRD studies revealed that all four complexes exist as dimers or coordination polymers in the solid-state, whereas 1 H and 11 B NMR spectra showed that they exist as a mixture of monomers and dimers in solution. Treating 4 with THF breaks up the dimer to yield the monomeric complex Nd(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ) 3 (THF) 3 (4-THF). XRD studies revealed that 4-THF has one chelating and two dangling H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 – ligands bound to the metal to accommodate binding of THF. In contrast to the results with K(H 3 BPPh 2 BH 3 ), attempting the same mechanochemical reactions with Na(H 3 BPH 2 BH 3 ) containing the simplest phosphinodiboranate were unsuccessful; only the partial metathesis product U(H 3 BPH 2 BH 3 )I 2 (THF) 3 (5) was isolated in poor yields. Here, despite these limitations, our results offer new examples showing how mechanochemistry can be used to rapidly synthesize molecular coordination complexes that are otherwise difficult to prepare using more traditional solution methods.

Synthesis and structural characterization of the new Zintl phases Eu 10 Mn 6 Bi 12 and Yb 10 Zn 6 Sb 12

Two new ternary compounds, Eu 10 Mn 6 Bi 12 and Yb 10 Zn 6 Sb 12 , were synthesized and structurally characterized. The synthesis was achieved either through reactions in sealed niobium tubes or in alumina crucibles by combining the elements in excess molten Sb. Their structures were elucidated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and they were determined to crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Cmmm (no. 65) with the Eu 10 Cd 6 Bi 12 structure type. Akin to the archetype phase, both Mn and Zn sites contain about 25% of vacancies. Furthermore, the anionic substructure of the title phases can be described as [M 6 Pn 12 ] (M = Zn, Mn; Pn = Sb, Bi) double layers composed of the corner and edge-sharing [MPn 4 ] tetrahedra, linked by [Pn 2 ] 4– dumbbells. Eu 2+ /Yb 2+ cations fill the space between the layers, with the valence electron counts adhering closely to the Zintl–Klemm rules, i.e., both Eu 10 Mn 6 Bi 12 and Yb 10 Zn 6 Sb 12 are expected to be valence-precise compounds. Analysis of the electronic structure and transport properties of Yb 10 Zn 6 Sb 12 indicate semimetallic behavior with relatively low Seebeck coefficient and resistivity that slightly decreases as a function of temperature.
