$T\overline{T}$ deformations of supersymmetric quantum mechanics

We define a manifestly supersymmetric version of the $T\overline{T}$ deformation appropriate for a class of (0 + 1)-dimensional theories with $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 or $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetry, including one presentation of the super-Schwarzian theory which is dual to JT supergravity. These deformations are written in terms of Noether currents associated with translations in superspace, so we refer to them collectively as f($\mathcal{Q}$) deformations. We provide evidence that the f($\mathcal{Q}$) deformations of $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 and $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 theories are on-shell equivalent to the dimensionally reduced supercurrent-squared deformations of 2d theories with $\mathcal{N}$ = (0, 1) and $\mathcal{N}$ = (1, 1)supersymmetry, respectively. In the $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 case, we present two forms of the f($\mathcal{Q}$) deformation which drive the same flow, and clarify their equivalence by studying the analogous equivalent deformations in the non-supersymmetric setting.

Probing Naturalness with Searches for Supersymmetric Higgs Partners at the Large Hadron Collider

The discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider completed the standard model of particle physics and led to the 2013 Nobel Prize. While it has been extremely successful in describing a wide variety of phenomena, the standard model cannot be the final theory of nature because it is unable to explain why the Higgs boson mass lies at the electroweak scale rather than 16 orders of magnitude larger at the Planck scale, a theoretical flaw known as the ``hierarchy problem.'' Supersymmetry is a standard model extension that could provide a natural solution to the hierarchy problem by introducing light supersymmetric Higgs partners. This proposal focused on searches that are sensitive to supersymmetric Higgs partners in data collected by the ATLAS experiment, which were carried out by the University of Illinois high-energy physics group led by PI Ben Hooberman as part of his Department of Energy Early Career Research Program award from 2017-2023. The searches were complemented by improvements to particle identification algorithms and the ATLAS trigger system that extend the sensitivity of future supersymmetry searches.

New superstrata from three-dimensional supergravity

We find a two-parameter family of generalized superstrata that emerge as smooth, supersymmetric solutions in three-dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to additional scalar fields. This new family of generalized superstrata are smooth microstate geometries and may be thought of as supersymmetric Coulomb-branch extensions of the original superstrata in which the underlying supertube undergoes an elliptical deformation. These solutions had already been obtained numerically, and as series solutions, to the equations of motion, and some of them were conjectured to be supersymmetric. Here we prove the supersymmetry of an entire two-parameter family and we obtain a highly non-trivial analytic and smooth solution for a one-parameter limit in which the global symmetry of the metric is enhanced to SO(3). We also confirm that the other known families of microstrata are not supersymmetric. We conclude with a cursory analysis of some of the singular brane distributions that can be accessed from three-dimensional gauged supergravity while preserving the same supersymmetries as the superstratum, and therefore of the three-charge black hole.

Fermionic shift symmetries in (anti) de Sitter space

We study extended shift symmetries that arise for fermionic fields on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space and de Sitter (dS) space for particular values of the mass relative to the curvature scale. We classify these symmetries for general mixed-symmetry fermionic fields in arbitrary dimension and describe how fields with these symmetries arise as the decoupled longitudinal modes of massive fermions as they approach partially massless points. For the particular case of AdS 4 , we look for non-trivial Lie superalgebras that can underly interacting theories that involve these fields. We study from this perspective the minimal such theory, the Akulov-Volkov theory on AdS 4 , which is a non-linear theory of a spin-1/2 Goldstino field that describes the spontaneous breaking of $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetry on AdS 4 down to the isometries of AdS 4 . We show how to write the nonlinear supersymmetry transformation for this theory using the fermionic ambient space formalism. We also study the Lie superalgebras of candidate multi-field examples and rule out the existence of a supersymmetric special galileon on AdS 4 .

Non-invertible defects from the Conway SCFT to K3 sigma models. Part I. General results

We initiate the study of supersymmetry-preserving topological defect lines (TDLs) in the Conway moonshine module V f♮ . We show that the tensor category of such defects, under suitable assumptions, admits a surjective but non-injective ring homomorphism into the ring of $\mathbb{Z}$-linear maps of the Leech lattice into itself. This puts strong constraints on possible defects and their quantum dimensions. We describe a simple construction of non-invertible TDLs from orbifolds of holomorphic (super)vertex operator algebras, which yields non-trivial examples of TDLs satisfying our main theorem. We conjecture a correspondence between four-plane-preserving TDLs in V f♮ and supersymmetry-preserving TDLs in K3 non-linear sigma models, which extends the correspondence between symmetry groups to the level of tensor category symmetry. We establish evidence for this conjecture by constructing non-invertible TDLs in special K3 non-linear sigma models.

High-quality axion from exact SUSY chiral dynamics

We use supersymmetric chiral dynamics perturbed by anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking to obtain a high-quality, composite axion that solves the strong problem. The strong dynamics arises from a supersymmetric SU(10) chiral gauge theory with massless matter chiral superfields. This leads to a stable, nonsupersymmetric vacuum, calculated exactly, where a spontaneously broken global symmetry, identified with the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry, gives rise to a composite QCD axion. The chiral gauge theory also admits a discrete (or ) gauge symmetry that forbids PQ-violating operators up to dimension eight. An extension to an chiral gauge theory incorporates grand unification where the unification scale is identified with the PQ-breaking scale and PQ-violating operators are forbidden up to dimension 20. The supersymmetry breaking scale, near 100 TeV, ameliorates the Higgs hierarchy problem, while colored Nambu–Goldstone bosons may be detected at future colliders via decays to gluons or form heavy isotopes.

Landscape of 4d N = 1 SCFTs with a = c

We study a landscape of four-dimensional N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with identical central charges. These theories are obtained by renormalization group flows triggered by supersymmetry-preserving superpotential deformations of the N = 1 gauging of the flavor symmetry of a collection of N = 2 D p ( G ) Argyres-Douglas SCFTs. In this work, we focus on the fixed points in the landscape of the S U ( 3 ) gauging of three copies of the D 2 ( S U ( 3 ) ) = H 2 theory together with an adjoint-valued chiral multiplet. We catalog the network of a = c fixed points, and, along the way, we find a variety of dualities and instances of supersymmetry enhancement. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Supersymmetric lattice theories on curved space

We show how to construct Hamiltonian lattice theories with one exact supersymmetry on arbitrary triangulations of curved space in any number of dimensions. Both bosons and fermions satisfy discrete Kähler-Dirac equations. The quantization of the fermions proceeds by imposing conventional anticommutation relations while the bosons require a modification of the usual canonical commutator. On regular lattices we construct parity, time reversal and translation-by-one (shift) symmetries. We argue that the latter are generically noninvertible symmetries. We also show how to couple these degrees of freedom to background gauge fields which leads to a theory with enhanced supersymmetry.

Flipped SU(5) GUT phenomenology: proton decay and $\mathbf {g_\mu - 2}$

We consider proton decay and $\mathbf {g_\mu - 2}$ in flipped SU(5) GUT models. We first study scenarios in which the soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters are constrained to be universal at some high scale M in above the standard GUT scale where the QCD and electroweak SU(2) couplings unify. In this case the proton lifetime is typically > rsim10 36 years, too long to be detected in the foreseeable future, and the supersymmetric contribution to $\mathbf {g_\mu - 2}$ is too small to contribute significantly to resolving the discrepancy between the experimental measurement and data-driven calculations within the Standard Model. However, we identify a region of the constrained flipped SU(5) parameter space with large couplings between the 10- and 5-dimensional GUT Higgs representations where p → e + π 0 decay may be detectable in the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment now under construction, though the contribution to $\mathbf {g_\mu - 2}$ is still small. A substantial contribution to $\mathbf {g_\mu - 2}$ is possible, however, if the universality constraints on the soft supersymmetry-breaking masses are relaxed. We find a ‘quadrifecta’ region where observable proton decay co-exists with a (partial) supersymmetric resolution of the $\mathbf {g_\mu - 2}$ discrepancy and acceptable values of m h and the relic LSP density.

Particle physics and cosmology of the string derived no-scale flipped SU(5)

In a recent paper, we identified a cosmological sector of a flipped SU(5) model derived in the free fermionic formulation of the heterotic superstring, containing the inflaton and the goldstino superfields with a superpotential leading to Starobinsky type inflation, while SU(5) × U(1) is still unbroken. Here, we study the properties and phenomenology of the vacuum after the end of inflation, where the gauge group is broken to the Standard Model. We identify a set of vacuum expectation values, triggered by the breaking of an anomalous U(1) A gauge symmetry at roughly an order of magnitude below the string scale, that solve the F and D-flatness supersymmetric conditions up to 6th order in the superpotential which is explicitly computed, leading to a successful particle phenomenology. In particular, all extra colour triplets become superheavy guaranteeing observable proton stability, while the Higgs doublet mass matrix has a massless pair eigenstate with realistic hierarchical Yukawa couplings to quarks and leptons. The supersymmetry breaking scale is constrained to be high, consistent with the non observation of supersymmetry signals at the LHC.

Exploring 2 + 2 answers to 3 + 1 questions

We explore potential uses of physics formulated in Kleinian (i.e. 2 + 2) signature spacetimes as a tool for understanding properties of physics in Lorentzian (i.e. 3 + 1) signature. Much as Euclidean (i.e. 4 + 0) signature quantities can be used to formally construct the ground state wavefunction of a Lorentzian signature quantum field theory, a similar analytic continuation to Kleinian signature constructs a state of low particle flux in the direction of analytic continuation. There is also a natural supersymmetry algebra available in 2 + 2 signature, which serves to constrain the structure of correlation functions. Spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry can produce various [Formula: see text] supersymmetry algebras that in 3 + 1 signature correspond to nonsupersymmetric systems. We speculate on the possible role of these structures in addressing the cosmological constant problem.

Candidate phases for SU(2) adjoint QCD$_4$ with two flavors from $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We study four-dimensional adjoint QCD with gauge group SU(2) and two Weyl fermion flavors, which has an SU(2) R chiral symmetry. The infrared behavior of this theory is not firmly established. We explore candidate infrared phases by embedding adjoint QCD into N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory deformed by a supersymmetry-breaking scalar mass M that preserves all global symmetries and 't Hooft anomalies. This includes 't Hooft anomalies that are only visible when the theory is placed on manifolds that do not admit a spin structure. The consistency of this procedure is guaranteed by a nonabelian spin-charge relation involving the SU(2) R symmetry that is familiar from topologically twisted N = 2 theories. Since every vacuum on the Coulomb branch of the N = 2 theory necessarily matches all 't Hooft anomalies, we can generate candidate phases for adjoint QCD by deforming the theories in these vacua while preserving all symmetries and 't Hooft anomalies. One such deformation is the supersymmetry-breaking scalar mass M itself, which can be reliably analyzed when M is small. In this regime it gives rise to an exotic Coulomb phase without chiral symmetry breaking. By contrast, the theory near the monopole and dyon points can be deformed to realize a candidate phase with monopole-induced confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. The low-energy theory consists of two copies of a CP 1 sigma model, which we analyze in detail. Certain topological couplings that are likely to be present in this CP 1 model turn the confining solitonic string of the model into a topological insulator. We also examine the behavior of various candidate phases under fermion mass deformations. We speculate on the possible large-M behavior of the deformed N = 2 theory and conjecture that the CP 1 phase eventually becomes dominant.

Broken conformal window

We show that near the edges of the conformal window of supersymmetric SU(Nc) QCD, perturbed by Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB), chiral symmetry can be broken depending on the initial conditions of the RG flow. We do so by perturbatively expanding around Banks-Zaks fixed points and taking advantage of Seiberg duality. Interpolating between the edges of the conformal window, we predict that non-supersymmetric QCD breaks chiral symmetry up to N f ≤ 3N c − 1, while we cannot say anything definitive for N f ≥ 3N c at this moment.

Phase transitions at unusual values of θ

We calculate the θ dependence in a cousin of QCD, where the vacuum structure can be analyzed exactly. The theory is $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 SU(2) gauge theory with N F = 0, 1, 2, 3 flavors of fundamentals, explicitly broken to $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 via an adjoint superpotential, and coupled to anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB). The hierarchy m AMSB ≪ μ 𝒩=1 ≪ Λ ensures the validity of our IR analysis. As expected from ordinary QCD, the vacuum energy is a function of θ which undergoes 1st order phase transitions between different vacua where the various dyons condense. For N F = 0 we find the expected phase transition at θ = π, while for N F = 1, 2, 3 we find phase transitions at fractional values of π.

Spinor-helicity formalism for massive and massless amplitudes in five dimensions

Five-dimensional gauge and gravity theories are known to exhibit striking properties. D = 5 is the lowest dimension where massive tensor states appear naturally, providing a testing ground for perturbative insights into six-dimensional tensor theories. Five-dimensional supergravities are highly constrained and admit elegant geometric and algebraic formulations, with global symmetries manifest at the Lagrangian level. In this paper, we take a step towards the systematic investigation of amplitudes in five dimensions, and present a five-dimensional version of the spinor-helicity formalism, applicable to massless, massive and supersymmetric states. We give explicit representations for on-shell spinor and polarization variables such that the little-group symmetry and gauge redundancy are manifest. Massive self-dual tensor states are discussed in some detail, as well as all the on-shell supermultiplets that can appear in matter-coupled gauge and supergravity theories. As a byproduct of considering supersymmetry in the presence of central charge, we obtain massless ten-dimensional Majorana-Weyl spinors as products of five-dimensional massive spinors. We present compact expressions for superamplitudes at multiplicity three and four, including several novel superamplitudes that either do not straightforwardly uplift to six dimensions, or have not appeared in the six-dimensional literature. We discuss several examples of five-dimensional double-copy constructions in the context of gravitational theories with massive vectors and tensors, illustrating that the formalism we construct can also be used to considerably streamline the double-copy construction of $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravities.

Search for direct pair production of sleptons and charginos decaying to two leptons and neutralinos with mass splittings near the $W$-boson mass in $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for the electroweak production of pairs of charged sleptons or charginos decaying into two-lepton final states with missing transverse momentum is presented. Two simplified models of R-parity-conserving supersymmetry are considered: direct pair-production of sleptons ($\sim\atop{\ell}$$\sim\atop{\ell}$), with each decaying into a charged lepton and a $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$ neutralino, and direct pair-production of the lightest charginos ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$ $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{∓}_{1}$), with each decaying into a W-boson and a $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$. The lightest neutralino ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The analyses target the experimentally challenging mass regions where $m$($\sim\atop{\ell}$) - $m$($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) and ($m$$\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$) – )$m$$\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) are close to the W-boson mass (‘moderately compressed’ regions). The search uses 139 fb –1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excesses over the expected background are observed. Exclusion limits on the simplified models under study are reported in the ($\sim\atop{\ell}$, $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) and ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$, $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) mass planes at 95% confidence level (CL). Sleptons with masses up to 150 GeV are excluded at 95% CL for the case of a mass-splitting between sleptons and the LSP of 50 GeV. Chargino masses up to 140 GeV are excluded at 95% CL for the case of a mass-splitting between the chargino and the LSP down to about 100 GeV.

Search for heavy, long-lived, charged particles with large ionisation energy loss in $pp$ collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV using the ATLAS experiment and the full Run 2 dataset

This paper presents a search for hypothetical massive, charged, long-lived particles with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 of proton–proton collisions at √s =13 TeV. These particles are expected to move significantly slower than the speed of light and should be identifiable by their high transverse momenta and anomalously large specific ionisation losses, dE/dx. Trajectories reconstructed solely by the inner tracking system and a dE/dx measurement in the pixel detector layers provide sensitivity to particles with lifetimes down to O(1) ns with a mass, measured using the Bethe–Bloch relation, ranging from 100 GeV to 3 TeV. Interpretations for pair-production of R-hadrons, charginos and staus in scenarios of supersymmetry compatible with these particles being long-lived are presented, with mass limits extending considerably beyond those from previous searches in broad ranges of lifetime.
