Holography: Quantum Mechanical Aspects of Black Holes (Final Report)

Current theories of fundamental physics are based on quantum field theory, unifying quantum mechanics and special relativity. A similar unification of quantum field theory with gravity has been elusive. String theory is a consistent model of quantum gravity and it is important to identify general lessons that can be applied to the real world. The main technique that emerged from such studies has been the gravitational path integral. During the period of this grant, the PI has explored the implication of the gravitational path integral in novel setups to uncover new features of rotating black holes in four dimensions, as well as increasing our understanding of some specific black holes in string theory.

Islands and Page curves in 4d from Type IIB

Variants of the black hole information paradox are studied in Type IIB string theory setups that realize four-dimensional gravity coupled to a bath. The setups are string theory versions of doubly-holographic Karch/Randall brane worlds, with black holes coupled to non-gravitating and gravitating baths. The 10d versions are based on fully backreacted solutions for configurations of D3, D5 and NS5 branes, and admit dual descriptions as N = 4 SYM on a half space and 3d $T$$^{σ}_{ρ}$ [SU(N)] SCFTs. Island contributions to the entanglement entropy of black hole radiation systems are identified through Ryu/Takayanagi surfaces and lead to Page curves. Analogs of the critical angles found in the Karch/Randall models are identified in 10d, as critical parameters in the brane configurations and dual field theories.

Uniqueness criteria for the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude

The scattering amplitudes of string theory exhibit many extraordinary properties. But are they the unique mathematical objects to do so? Recently, it has been shown how the spectrum and amplitudes of open string theory follow directly from the assumptions of faster than power-law falloff at high energies and a property dubbed level truncation. At present there is no analogous principle for closed string scattering, which is famously rigid and naively impervious to modification. In this paper we analytically bootstrap the spectrum and four-point amplitudes of the closed string—together with a parametrized space of deformations—from conditions on high-energy falloff and level truncation. While these deformations exhibit the same Regge scaling as pure gravity, in the tensionless limit they reproduce remarkable extremal amplitudes that have appeared in bottom-up studies of positivity.

Integrability and Symmetries of Classical Geometries

This research project had two major objectives: advancement in constructing quantum theory of gravity and analytical understanding of strongly--coupled systems. The project contributed to advancing quantum theory of gravity by studying dynamics of black holes. A comprehensive analysis of excitations of rotating black holes in arbitrary dimensions has been performed, all solutions of Maxwell's equations as well as their generalizations to arbitrary p-forms in such backgrounds have been constructed, and a significant progress towards extension of these results to gravitational waves has been made. The project also advanced theoretical understanding of strongly-coupled theories by analyzing properties of exactly-solvable (integrable) models. A new method for solving dynamical equations for various fields in a large class of backgrounds without isometries has been developed, and this technique was used to extract spectra of supergravity modes in several integrable string theories. The analytical structure of large classes of integrable string theories has also been analyzed.

Running decompactification, sliding towers, and the distance conjecture

We study towers of light particles that appear in infinite-distance limits of moduli spaces of 9-dimensional $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 string theories, some of which notably feature decompactification limits with running string coupling. The lightest tower in such decompactification limits consists of the non-BPS Kaluza-Klein modes of Type I' string theory, whose masses depend nontrivially on the moduli of the theory. We work out the moduli-dependence by explicit computation, finding that despite the running decompactification the Distance Conjecture remains satisfied with an exponential decay rate α ≥ 1 / $\sqrt{d-2}$ in accordance with the sharpened Distance Conjecture. The related sharpened Convex Hull Scalar Weak Gravity Conjecture also passes stringent tests. Our results non-trivially test the Emergent String Conjecture, while highlighting the important subtlety that decompactifcation can lead to a running solution rather than to a higher-dimensional vacuum.

Binary AdS black holes coupled to a bath in Type IIB

We construct Type IIB string theory setups which, via double holography, realize two gravitational systems in separate AdS spaces which interact with each other and with a non-gravitational bath. We employ top-down string theory solutions with concrete field theory duals in the form of 4d $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM BCFTs and a first-principles notion of double holography. The setups are used to realize pairs of ‘near’ and ‘far’ black holes from the perspective of the bath, which exchange Hawking radiation with each other and radiate into the bath. We identify three phases for the entropy in the bath characterized as no island, partial island and full island, and discuss the entropy curves. The setups differ from the black hole binaries observed in gravitational wave experiments but may capture certain aspects.

A defect in AdS 3 /CFT 2 duality

AdS 3 string theory in the stringy regime k = (R AdS /ℓ s ) 2 < 1 provides a laboratory for the study of holography in which both sides of AdS/CFT duality are under fairly good control. Worldsheet string theory is solvable, and for closed strings the dual spacetime CFT is a deformation of a symmetric product orbifold. Here we extend this construction to include open strings by adding a probe D-string, described semiclassically by an AdS 2 D-brane in AdS 3 . The dual defect or boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) is again a deformed symmetric product, which now describes the Fock space of long open and closed strings near the AdS boundary, with a boundary deformation implementing the open/closed transition in addition to the symmetric product $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 twist deformation that implements closed string joining/splitting. The construction thus provides an explicit example of an AdS 3 /BCFT 2 duality.

Quantum field theory and the Bieberbach conjecture

An intriguing correspondence between ingredients in geometric function theory related to the famous Bieberbach conjecture (de Branges' theorem) and the non-perturbative crossing symmetric representation of 2-2 scattering amplitudes of identical scalars is pointed out. Using the dispersion relation and unitarity, we are able to derive several inequalities, analogous to those which arise in the discussions of the Bieberbach conjecture. We derive new and strong bounds on the ratio of certain Wilson coefficients and demonstrate that these are obeyed in one-loop Φ 4 theory, tree level string theory as well as in the S-matrix bootstrap. Further, we find two sided bounds on the magnitude of the scattering amplitude, which are shown to be respected in all the contexts mentioned above. Translated to the usual Mandelstam variables, for large |s|, fixed t, the upper bound reads |M(s,t)| ≲ |s 2 |. We discuss how Szegö's theorem corresponds to a check of univalence in an EFT expansion, while how the Grunsky inequalities translate into nontrivial, nonlinear inequalities on the Wilson coefficients.

Non-Semisimple TQFT's and BPS q -Series

We propose and in some cases prove a precise relation between 3-manifold invariants associated with quantum groups at roots of unity and at generic q. Both types of invariants are labeled by extra data which plays an important role in the proposed relation. Bridging the two sides - which until recently were developed independently, using very different methods - opens many new avenues. In one direction, it allows to study (and perhaps even to formulate) q-series invariants labeled by spin c structures in terms of non-semisimple invariants. In the opposite direction, it offers new insights and perspectives on various elements of non-semisimple TQFT's, bringing the latter into one unifying framework with other invariants of knots and 3-manifolds that recently found realization in quantum field theory and in string theory.

Cosmological implications of Kalb-Ramond-like particles

The Kalb-Ramond field is an antisymmetric, rank-two tensor field which most notably appears in the context of string theory, but has largely been unexplored in the context of cosmology. In this work, motivated by the Kalb-Ramond field in string theory, and antisymmetric tensor fields that emerge in effective field theories ranging from particle physics to condensed matter, we study the primordial production of interacting massive Kalb-Ramond-like-particles (KRLPs). KRLPs contain features of both dark photon and axion models, which can be appreciated via their duality properties. While the massless non-interacting KRLP is dual to a pseudoscalar, and the massive non-interacting KRLP is dual to a pseudovector, the interacting massive KRLP can be distinguished from its scalar and vector counterparts. We study early-universe production of KRLPs via the freeze-in mechanism, considering a ‘dark photon-like’ interaction, an ‘axion-like’ interaction, and a ‘Higgs portal’ interaction, as well as production via cosmological gravitational particle production. We find that as a dark matter candidate, KRLPs can be produced by all of the above mechanisms and account for the relic density of dark matter today for a wide range of masses. Finally, we comment on the potential to obtain both warm and cold dark matter subcomponents, and speculate on observational and experimental prospects.

Fractons and Exotic Symmetries from Branes

The emerging study of fractons, a new type of quasi-particle with restricted mobility, has motivated the construction of several classes of interesting continuum quantum field theories with novel properties. One such class consists of foliated field theories which, roughly, are built by coupling together fields supported on the leaves of foliations of spacetime. Another approach, which we refer to as exotic field theory, focuses on constructing Lagrangians consistent with special symmetries (like subsystem symmetries) that are adjacent to fracton physics. A third framework is that of infinite-component Chern-Simons theories, which attempts to generalize the role of conventional Chern-Simons theory in describing (2+1)D Abelian topological order to fractonic order in (3+1)D. The study of these theories is ongoing, and many of their properties remain to be understood. Historically, it has been fruitful to study QFTs by embedding them into string theory. One way this can be done is via D-branes, extended objects whose dynamics can, at low energies, be described in terms of conventional quantum field theory. Further, QFTs that can be realized in this way can then be analyzed using the rich mathematical and physical structure of string theory. In this paper, we show that foliated field theories, exotic field theories, and infinite-component Chern-Simons theories can all be realized on the world-volumes of branes. We hope that these constructions will ultimately yield valuable insights into the physics of these interesting field theories.

Generalising G 2 geometry: involutivity, moment maps and moduli

We analyse the geometry of generic Minkowski N = 1, D = 4 flux compactifications in string theory, the default backgrounds for string model building. In M-theory they are the natural string theoretic extensions of G2 holonomy manifolds. In type II theories, they extend the notion of Calabi-Yau geometry and include the class of flux backgrounds based on generalised complex structures first considered by Graña et al. (GMPT). Using E 7(7) × $\mathbb{R}$ + generalised geometry we show that these compactifications are characterised by an SU(7) ⊂ E 7(7) structure defining an involutive subbundle of the generalised tangent space, and with a vanishing moment map, corresponding to the action of the diffeomorphism and gauge symmetries of the theory. The Kähler potential on the space of structures defines a natural extension of Hitchin’s G 2 functional. Using this framework we are able to count, for the first time, the massless scalar moduli of GMPT solutions in terms of generalised geometry cohomology groups. It also provides an intriguing new perspective on the existence of G 2 manifolds, suggesting possible connections to Geometrical Invariant Theory and stability.

A study of the dynamic tire properties over a range of tire constructions

The dynamic properties of four model aircraft tires of various construction were evaluated experimentally and compared with available theory. The experimental investigation consisted of measuring the cornering force and the self-aligning torque developed by the tires undergoing sinusoidal steering inputs while operating on a small scale, road-wheel tire testing apparatus. The force and moment data from the different tires are compared with both finite- and point-contact patch string theory predictions. In general, agreement between finite contact patch theory and experimental observation is good. A modified string theory is also presented in which coefficients for cornering force and self-aligning torque are determined separately. This theory improves the correspondence between the experimental and analytical data, particularly on tires with relatively high self-aligning torques.

Strong coupling expansion of free energy and BPS Wilson loop in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 superconformal models with fundamental hypermultiplets

As a continuation of the study (in arXiv:2102.07696 and arXiv:2104.12625 ) of strong-coupling expansion of non-planar corrections in \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 4d superconformal models we consider two special theories with gauge groups SU( N ) and Sp(2 N ). They contain N -independent numbers of hypermultiplets in rank 2 antisymmetric and fundamental representations and are planar-equivalent to the corresponding \( \mathcal{N} \) = 4 SYM theories. These \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 theories can be realised on a system of N D3-branes with a finite number of D7-branes and O7-plane; the dual string theories should be particular orientifolds of AdS 5 × S 5 superstring. Starting with the localization matrix model representation for the \( \mathcal{N} \) = 2 partition function on S 4 we find exact differential relations between the 1 /N terms in the corresponding free energy F and the \( \frac{1}{2} \) -BPS Wilson loop expectation value \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) and also compute their large ’t Hooft coupling ( λ » 1) expansions. The structure of these expansions is different from the previously studied models without fundamental hypermultiplets. In the more tractable Sp(2 N ) case we find an exact resummed expression for the leading strong coupling terms at each order in the 1 /N expansion. We also determine the exponentially suppressed at large λ contributions to the non-planar corrections to F and \( \left\langle \mathcal{W}\right\rangle \) and comment on their resurgence properties. We discuss dual string theory interpretation of these strong coupling expansions.

Veneziano variations: how unique are string amplitudes?

String theory offers an elegant and concrete realization of how to consistently couple states of arbitrarily high spin. But how unique is this construction? In this paper we derive a novel, multi-parameter family of four-point scattering amplitudes exhibiting i) polynomially bounded high-energy behavior and ii) exchange of an infinite tower of high-spin modes, albeit with a finite number of states at each resonance. These amplitudes take an infinite-product form and, depending on parameters, exhibit mass spectra that are either unbounded or bounded, thus corresponding to generalizations of the Veneziano and Coon amplitudes, respectively. For the bounded case, masses converge to an accumulation point, a peculiar feature seen in the Coon amplitude but more recently understood to arise naturally in string theory [1]. Importantly, our amplitudes contain free parameters allowing for the customization of the slope and offset of the spin-dependence in the Regge trajectory. We compute all partial waves for this multi-parameter class of amplitudes and identify unitary regions of parameter space. For the unbounded case, we apply similar methods to derive new deformations of the Veneziano and Virasoro-Shapiro amplitudes.

Loop amplitudes monodromy relations and color-kinematics duality

Color-kinematics duality is a remarkable conjectured property of gauge theory which, together with double copy, is at the heart of a wealth of new developments in scattering amplitudes. So far, its validity has been verified in most cases only empirically, with limited ab initio understanding beyond tree-level. In this paper we provide initial steps in a first-principle understanding of color-kinematics duality and double-copy at loop level, through a detailed analysis of the field-theory limit of the monodromy relations of string theory at one loop. In this limit, we dissect the type of Feynman graphs generated and the relations they obey. We find that graphs with contact-terms are unavoidable and are generated in the field theory limit of “bulk” contours which do not have a standard physical interpretation in string perturbation theory. We show how they are related to ambiguities in the definition of the loop momentum and that their role is precisely to cancel those ambiguities.

On unitarity of tree-level string amplitudes

Four-particle tree-level scattering amplitudes in string theory are magically consistent with unitarity, reflected in the non-trivial fact that beneath the critical dimension, the residues of the amplitudes on massive poles can be expanded in partial waves with all positive coefficients. While this follows (rather indirectly) from the no-ghost theorem, the simplicity of the statement and its fundamental importance for the physical consistency of string theory begs for a more direct and elementary understanding. In this note we take a step in this direction by presenting a new expression for the partial wave coefficients of string amplitudes, given by surprisingly simple double/triple contour integrals for open/closed strings. This representation allows us to directly prove unitarity of all superstring theories in D ≤ 6 spacetime dimensions, and can also be used to determine various asymptotics of the partial waves at large mass levels.

One-loop matrix elements of effective superstring interactions: α' -expanding loop integrands

In the low-energy effective action of string theories, non-abelian gauge interactions and supergravity are augmented by infinite towers of higher-mass-dimension operators. We propose a new method to construct one-loop matrix elements with insertions of operators D 2k F n and D 2k R n in the tree-level effective action of type-I and type-II superstrings. Inspired by ambitwistor string theories, our method is based on forward limits of moduli-space integrals using string tree-level amplitudes with two extra points, expanded in powers of the inverse string tension α'. Similar to one-loop ambitwistor computations, intermediate steps feature non-standard linearized Feynman propagators which eventually recombine to conventional quadratic propagators. With linearized propagators the loop integrand of the matrix elements obey one-loop versions of the monodromy and KLT relations. We express a variety of four- and five-point examples in terms of quadratic propagators and formulate a criterion on the underlying genus-one correlation functions that should make this recombination possible at all orders in α'. The ultraviolet divergences of the one-loop matrix elements are crosschecked against the non-separating degeneration of genus-one integrals in string amplitudes. Conversely, our results can be used as a constructive method to determine degenerations of elliptic multiple zeta values and modular graph forms at arbitrary weight.
