Magic state distillation from entangled states

We report that magic can be distributed non-locally in many-body entangled states, such as the low energy states of condensed matter systems. Using the Bravyi-Kitaev magic state distillation protocol, we find that non-local magic is distillable and can improve the distillation outcome. We analyze a few explicit examples and show that spin squeezing can be used to convert non-distillable states into distillable ones. Our analysis also suggests that the conventional product input states assumed by magic distillation protocols are extremely atypical among general states with distillable magic. It further justifies the need for studying a diverse range of entangled inputs that yield magic states with high probability.

β -delayed neutron spectroscopy of Co 70 , 72 ground-state and isomeric-state decays

Here, the β-decaying states of 70,72 Co were studied at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using the VANDLE neutron time-of-flight array. The (6 - ,7 - )⁢β-decaying state in 70 Co is near-spherical with a lifetime of 113 ± 7 ms, and the low-spin (1 + ,2 + )⁢β-decaying state is postulated to be the prolate deformed ground state with a lifetime of 508 ± 7 ms. Both decay predominantly to the bound states of 70 Ni. For the first time neutron-emissions from neutron unbound states from both the (6 - ,7 - ) and (1 + ,2 + )⁢β decays were measured. Even with the low statistics data, we were able to disentangle the neutron emission from both decays, which enabled a determination of β-decay strength above the neutron separation energy of 70 Ni. Neutron emission probabilities were measured to be 7.1 ± 1.5% and 9.4 ± 1.7%, respectively, for the (6 - ,7 - ) and (1 + ,2 + ) decays. The decay pattern of the 70 Co is driven by neutron f 5/2 to proton f 7/2 Gamow-Teller transformation. The observed population of neutron unbound states is attributed to the conversion of p 1/2 and p 3/2 neutrons to p 3/2 and p 1/2 protons excited across the Z = 28 closed shell.

Geospatial Cluster Analysis of the State, Duration and Severity of Drought Over Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil

Droughts threaten water resources, agriculture, socio-economic activities and the population at the global and regional level, so identifying areas with homogeneous drought behaviors is an important consideration in improving the management of water resources. The objective of this study is to identify homogenous zones over Paraíba State in relation to the state, duration and severity of droughts that have occurred over the last 20 years (1998–2017) using hierarchical cluster analysis based on both gauge-measured and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) estimated rainfall data (TMPA 3B42). The drought series were calculated using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) based on eight time scales and were grouped according to drought state, duration and severity time series. The integrated results of state, duration and severity of droughts indicate that there is a basis for dividing Paraíba State into two major regions (a) Zone I, formed by Mata Paraibana and Agreste Paraibano, and (b) Zone II, composed by Borborema and Sertão Paraibano. This division is evident when assessing short-term droughts, but in the case of long-term droughts, Paraíba State has a high similarity in terms of drought state, duration, and severity. Factors such as proximity to the ocean, active climatic systems, and the local relief configuration were identified as influencing the drought regime. Finally, it is concluded that TMPA rainfall estimates represent a valuable source of data to regionalize and identify drought patterns over this part of Brazil and that other studies of this type should be carried out to monitor these phenomena based on other satellite-based rainfall data, including the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM).

Operation and Control of Soft Switching Solid State Transformer as a Virtual Synchronous Machine for Photovoltaic Application

Possibility for control and operation of a three-phase solid state soft switching transformer based as a virtual synchronous machine or synchronverter has been investigated in this paper. The soft switching solid state transformer is used as an interface between the ac grid and a photovoltaic power generation unit supported by a battery bank. The control architecture investigated in this paper is that of a synchronverter to achieve inertial support to the grid and local loads. The operation of the soft switching solid state transformer has also been investigated as a V S M during unbalanced/distorted grid voltage condition. Control objective to achieve oscillation free power transfer between the ports (photovoltaic, battery and grid) has been achieved. The presented architecture has been verified for several important case studies via numerical simulations based on MATLAB/Simulink domain.

Local order, disorder, and everything in between: using 91 Zr solid-state NMR spectroscopy to probe zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks

Characterization of metal centers in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is critical for rational design and further understanding of structure–property relationships. The short-range structure about Zr atoms is challenging to properly elucidate in many Zr MOFs, particularly when local disorder is present. Static 91 Zr solid-state NMR spectra of the seven zirconium MOFs UiO-66, UiO-66-NH 2 , UiO-67, MOF-801, MOF-808, DUT-68 and DUT-69 have been acquired at high magnetic fields of 35.2 T and 19.6 T, yielding valuable information on the local structure, site symmetry and order about Zr. 91 Zr NMR is very sensitive to differences in MOF short-range structure caused by guest molecules, linker substitution and post-synthetic treatment. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations assist in the interpretation and assignment of 91 Zr solid-state NMR spectra, lend insight into structural origins of 91 Zr NMR parameters and enable determination of local Zr coordination environments. This approach can be extended to many other materials containing zirconium.

Noise-canceling quantum feedback: Non-Hermitian dynamics with applications to state preparation and magic state distillation

Time-continuous quantum measurement allows for the tracking of a quantum system in real time via sequences of short, and individually weak, measurement intervals. Such measurements are necessarily invasive, imparting backaction to the system, and allowing the observer to update their state estimate based on stochastic measurement outcomes. Feedback control then involves real-time interventions by an observer, conditioned on the time-continuous measurement signal that they receive. Here, we consider here diffusive quantum trajectories and focus on the “noise-canceling” subset of feedback protocols that aim to minimize the degree of stochasticity in the dynamics. We derive such a class of feedback operations, showing that under the idealized assumptions of pure states, unit measurement efficiency, and zero time delay in implementing feedback operations, perfectly noise-canceling feedback always exists. We consider the resulting noise-canceled dynamics generated by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian; while non-Hermitian Hamiltonians from continuous monitoring generally describe rare dynamics (accessible by costly postselection), the use of noise-canceling feedback here leads to non-Hermitian dynamics that occur deterministically. We demonstrate this via examples of entangled state preparation and stabilization. We then illustrate the potential for the application of noise cancellation to boost success rates in magic state distillation protocols. We show that adding feedback based on noise cancellation into a time-continuous five-to-one distillation protocol leads to higher probabilities of successful distillation across a range of input errors and increases the threshold on input errors for which the protocol is effective. Our results highlight the efficacy of noise-canceling feedback-aided protocols for quantum state preparation and stabilization tasks.

A weighted state redistribution algorithm for embedded boundary grids

State redistribution is an algorithm that stabilizes cut cells for embedded boundary grid methods. This work extends the earlier algorithm in several important ways. First, state redistribution is extended to three spatial dimensions. Second, we discuss several algorithmic changes and improvements motivated by the more complicated cut cell geometries that can occur in higher dimensions. In particular, we introduce a weighted version with less dissipation in an easily generalizable framework. Third, we demonstrate that state redistribution can also stabilize a solution update that includes both advective and diffusive contributions. Notably, the stabilization algorithm is shown to be effective for incompressible as well as compressible reacting flows. Finally, we discuss the implementation of the algorithm for several exascale-ready simulation codes based on AMReX, demonstrating ease of use in combination with domain decomposition, hybrid parallelism and complex physics.

A METHODOLOGY TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW STATE VISION FOR THE UNITED STATES NUCLEAR INDUSTRY

A new strategy in the way in which the United States nuclear power plants (NPPs) are operated, maintained, and supported is needed. One such strategy is to transform the NPP operating model through a business-driven approach that leverages technology to enable new capabilities that improve performance and reduce cost. This paper presents a methodology for developing an achievable yet transformative new state vision that ensures continued safe and efficient operations of the United States NPP fleet. This work builds on existing guidance and leverages previous research to comprehensively address both bottom-up (i.e., utility needs) and top-down (i.e., first principles) considerations important for developing a new state vision. The proposed methodology is intended to provide industry-wide guidance for developing a new state vision that leverages both the selected vendor’s capabilities in a way that meets the utility’s modernization goals while ensuring state-of-the-art systems engineering and human factors engineering principles are applied that promote overall plant safety, performance, and efficiency.

U.S. Aerospace and Aviation Industry: A State-By-State Analysis

President George W. Bush and the Congress created the Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry to evaluate the current and future health of the industry as well as the challenges that lie ahead for the U.S. workforce and the economy. To accomplish our mission, we commissioned a study on the economic impact of the aerospace industry nationally and on a state-by-state basis, using the best available U.S. government data. This study sought to define the core of the aerospace industry. The resulting data represents that very core those jobs specifically tied to commercial and civilian aerospace. U.S. Aerospace and Aviation: A State-by-State Analysis examines the civilian and commercial aerospace and aviation industry by employment, wages, payroll, and establishments. The report found that the U.S. civilian and commercial aerospace and aviation industry employed over 2 million workers in 2001.

Clean Air as a Bonus for Achieving Energy-Related State Goals: A Review of Policies and Programs in 15 States

This report explores connections between six common areas for state action on energy-related issues — resilience, economic development, energy affordability, electrifying transportation, grid modernization, and using local resources — and reducing air emissions. Although clean air often is not a driver for such state actions, they nonetheless reduce a variety of emissions, including particulates, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. The study spans 15 geographically diverse states: Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah. While these states have not adopted mandatory climate goals, they conduct a wide range of energy-related activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants as a side benefit.

Lithium-ion battery physics and statistics-based state of health model

A pseudo-2d model using COMSOL Multiphysics® software is developed to simulate performance and performance degradation of Li-ion batteries consisting of layered and olivine cathodes with graphite anode when subjected to peak shaving grid service. Multiple degradation pathways are considered, including solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and breakdown at the anode, cathode dissolution and its synergistic effect on SEI formation at the anode. The model is validated by simulating commercial cylindrical cell performance. A global model is developed to simulate performance across all chemistries, along with individual chemistry models using global model parameters as initial values. There is good agreement between these models for various optimization parameters such as SEI equilibrium potential, cathode dissolution exchange current density, solvent diffusivity in the SEI and SEI ionic conductivity. To circumvent time constraints related to the COMSOL model, a 0d global model is developed which fits data well and provides more clarity on differences in cathode dissolution exchange current density. Again, good agreement for various optimization parameters is obtained among the COMSOL global & individual chemistry models and the 0-d model. The lessons learned from the physics-based model is used to develop a top down statistics-based model using current, voltage and anode volumetric change per mole lithium intercalated, along with their interactions as degradation predictors. This model predicts out of sample degradation for multiple grid services and electric vehicle drive cycle with high accuracy and provides the pathway to develop an efficient battery management system combining machine learning and findings from physics-based computationally intensive algorithms.

CaMn 3 IV O 4 Cubane Models of the Oxygen‐Evolving Complex: Spin Ground States S <9/2 and the Effect of Oxo Protonation

Abstract We report the single crystal XRD and MicroED structure, magnetic susceptibility, and EPR data of a series of CaMn 3 IV O 4 and YMn 3 IV O 4 complexes as structural and spectroscopic models of the cuboidal subunit of the oxygen‐evolving complex (OEC). The effect of changes in heterometal identity, cluster geometry, and bridging oxo protonation on the spin‐state structure was investigated. In contrast to previous computational models, we show that the spin ground state of CaMn 3 IV O 4 complexes and variants with protonated oxo moieties need not be S =9/2. Desymmetrization of the pseudo ‐ C 3 ‐symmetric Ca(Y)Mn 3 IV O 4 core leads to a lower S =5/2 spin ground state. The magnitude of the magnetic exchange coupling is attenuated upon oxo protonation, and an S =3/2 spin ground state is observed in CaMn 3 IV O 3 (OH). Our studies complement the observation that the interconversion between the low‐spin and high‐spin forms of the S 2 state is pH‐dependent, suggesting that the (de)protonation of bridging or terminal oxygen atoms in the OEC may be connected to spin‐state changes.

Particle Size Distribution Dynamics Can Help Constrain the Phase State of Secondary Organic Aerosol

Particle phase state is a property of atmospheric aerosols that has important implications for the formation, evolution, and gas/particle partitioning of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In this work, we use a size-resolved chemistry and microphysics model (SOM-TOMAS), updated to include an explicit treatment of particle phase state, to constrain the bulk diffusion coefficient (Db) of SOA produced from ??- pinene ozonolysis. By leveraging data from laboratory experiments performed in the absence of a seed and under dry conditions, we find that the Db for SOA can be constrained (1-7 ×10-15 cm2 s-1 in these experiments) by simultaneously reproducing the time-varying SOA mass concentrations and the evolution of the particle size distribution. Another version of our model that used the predicted SOA composition to calculate the glass transition temperature, viscosity, and, ultimately, Db (~10-15 cm2 s-1) of the SOA was able to reproduce the mass and size distribution measurements when we included oligomer formation (oligomers accounted for about a fifth of the SOA mass). Our work highlights the potential of a size resolved SOA model to constrain the particle phase state of SOA by utilizing historical measurements of the evolution of the particle size distribution.
