Electron–Phonon and Spin–Lattice Coupling in Atomically Thin Layers of MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 represents a new class of magnetic topological insulators in which novel quantum phases emerge at temperatures higher than those found in magnetically doped thin films. Here in this paper, we investigate how couplings between electron, spin, and lattice are manifested in the phonon spectra of few-septuple-layer thick MnBi 2 Te 4 . After categorizing phonon modes by their symmetries, we study the systematic changes in frequency, line width, and line shape of a spectrally isolated A1g mode. The electron–phonon coupling increases in thinner flakes as manifested in a broader phonon line width, which is likely due to changes of the electron density of states. In 4- and 5-septuple thick samples, the onset of magnetic order below the Néel temperature is concurrent with a transition to an insulating state. We observe signatures of a reduced electron–phonon scattering across this transition as reflected in the reduced Fano parameter. Finally, spin–lattice coupling is measured and modeled from temperature-dependent phonon frequency.

Frustration-driven magnetic correlations in the spin-$\frac{5}{2}$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe⁢(HPO 3 ) 2

Here, a detailed study of the structural and magnetic properties of a spin-5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe⁢(HPO 3 ) 2 is presented using x-ray diffraction, magnetization, heat capacity, and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a polycrystalline sample. The crystal structure features an equilateral triangular lattice of Fe 3+ ions. The thermodynamic measurements reveal the onset of a magnetic long-range order at 𝑇 N⁢1 ≃7.8K in zero field, followed by another low-temperature field-induced ordering at 𝑇 N⁢2 in higher fields. The transition at 𝑇 N⁢1 is further confirmed from the NMR spin lattice relaxation measurements. The value of the frustration ratio (𝑓≃7) implies moderate spin frustration in the compound. The 31 P NMR spectra exhibit two distinct spectral lines corresponding to two inequivalent phosphorus sites (P1 and P2), consistent with the crystal structure. The P1 site is strongly coupled with an isotropic hyperfine coupling of 𝐴$^{iso}_{hf}$ = 0.55⁢(2)⁢ T/𝜇 B while the P2 site is weakly coupled with 𝐴$^{iso}_{hf}$ = 0.25⁢(3)⁢ T/𝜇 B with the Fe 3+ ions. The magnetic susceptibility and NMR shift data are described well assuming a spin-5/2 isotropic triangular lattice antiferromagnetic model with an average exchange coupling of 𝐽/𝑘 B = 2.8⁢(2)⁢K. Below 𝑇 N⁢1 , the spectra evolve into a nearly rectangular powder pattern, indicating a commensurate antiferromagnetic type order. The 31 P spin-lattice relaxation rate well below 𝑇N⁢1 follows a 𝑇 3 temperature dependence, implying a two-magnon Raman scattering mechanism in the ordered state. Three well-defined phase regimes are clearly ascertained in the 𝐻−𝑇 phase diagram, reflecting a weak magnetic anisotropy in the compound.

Unit-density SU(3) Fermi-Hubbard model with spin-flavor imbalance

The advent of ultracold alkaline-earth atoms in optical lattices has established a platform for investigating correlated quantum matter with SU⁡(𝑁) symmetry, offering highly tunable model parameters that allow experiments to access phenomena that are unavailable in conventional materials. Understanding the ground-state physics of SU⁡(𝑁) Fermi-Hubbard models away from the Heisenberg limit and from the spin-flavor balanced setting is important, as examining the flavor imbalance reveals new physics in Fermi-Hubbard models and shows how SU⁡(𝑁) phases react to practical experimental imperfections in optical lattices. Here, in this study, mean-field phase diagrams are presented for the unit-density SU(3) Fermi-Hubbard model at two sets of flavor densities, ($\frac{1}{3}$ − 𝛿, $\frac{1}{3}$ + 𝛿, $\frac{1}{3}$) and ($\frac{1}{4}$ − 𝛿, $\frac{1}{4}$ +𝛿, $\frac{1}{2}$), with the flavor imbalance introduced as 𝛿. Novel phases are identified at moderate interaction strengths for both densities, and their robustness is investigated in the presence of flavor imbalance. Furthermore, we provide microscopic explanations of the phases found and their stability. Analysis of thermal ensembles of random mean-field solutions indicate that, at temperatures accessible in state-of-the-art cold atom experiments, some spin orders are hard for conventional scattering or local observable measurements to detect, but can be more accessible with quantum gas microscopy in optical lattice experiments. This work also shows that nesting and Mottness, intertwined in the usual SU(2) Hubbard model in stark contrast to generic materials, can be tuned in the SU(3) model and play distinct roles. The resulting phase diagrams not only deepen our understanding of SU⁡(𝑁) Fermi-Hubbard models but also inform future experimental search for new phases.

Magnetic multilayer edges in Bernal-stacked hexagonal boron nitride

Single-layer h-BN is known to have edges with unique magnetism; however, in the commonly fabricated multilayer AA'-h-BN, edge relaxations occur that create interlayer bonds and eliminate the unpaired electrons at the edge. Recently, a robust method of growing the unconventional Bernal-stacked h-BN (AB-h-BN) has been reported. Here, we use theoretical approaches to investigate the nitrogen-terminated zigzag edges in AB-h-BN that can be formed in a controlled fashion using a high-energy electron beam. We find that these "open"edges remain intact in bilayer and multilayer AB-h-BN, enabling researchers potentially to investigate these edge states experimentally. We also investigate the thermodynamics of the spin configurations at the edge by constructing a lattice model that is based on parameters extracted from a set of first-principles calculations. We find that the edge spins in neighboring layers interact very weakly, resulting in a sequence of independent spin chains in multilayer samples. By solving this model using Monte Carlo simulations, we can determine nm-scale correlation lengths at liquid-N 2 temperatures and lower. At low temperatures, these edges may be utilized in magnetoresistance and spintronics applications.

Deformed spin- 1 2 square lattice in antiferromagnetic NaZnVOPO 4 ( HPO 4 )

In this work, we report the structural and magnetic properties of a new spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnet NaZnVOPO 4 (HPO 4 ) studied via x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, as well as density-functional band-structure calculations. While thermodynamic properties of this compound are well described by the J 1 – J 2 square-lattice model, ab initio calculations suggest a significant deformation of the spin lattice. From fits to the magnetic susceptibility we determine the averaged nearest-neighbor and second-neighbor exchange couplings of $\bar{J}$ 1 ≃ – 1.3 K and $\bar{J}$ 2 ≃ 5.6 K , respectively, resulting in the effective frustration ratio α = $\bar{J}$ 2 – $\bar{J}$ 1 ≃ – 4.3 that implies columnar antiferromagnetic order as the ground state. Experimental saturation field of 15.3 T is consistent with these estimates if 20% spatial anisotropy in J 1 is taken into account. Specific heat data signal the onset of a magnetic long-range order at T N ≃ 2.1 K , which is further supported by a sharp peak in the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate. The NMR spectra mark the superposition of two P lines due to two nonequivalent P sites where the broad line with the strong hyperfine coupling and short T 1 is identified as the P(1) site located within the magnetic planes, while the narrow line with the weak hyperfine coupling and long T 1 is designated as the P(2) site located between the planes.

Static and dynamic magnetic properties of honeycomb lattice antiferromagnets Na 2 M 2 TeO 6 , M = Co and Ni

The magnetic structures and spin dynamics of Na 2 CO 2 TeO 6 and Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 are investigated by means of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements and the results are discussed in the context of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice with strong spin-orbit coupling. The large number of parameters involved in the Hamiltonian model is evaluated by using an iterative optimization algorithm capable of extracting model solutions and simultaneously estimating their uncertainty. The analyses indicate that both Co 2+ (d 7 ) and Ni 2+ (d 8 ) antiferromagnets realize bond-dependent anisotropic nearest-neighbor interactions and support the theoretical predictions for the realization of Kitaev physics in 3 d electron systems with effective spins S = 1/2 and 1. By studying the Na-doped system Na 2.4 Ni 2 TeO 6 , we show that the control of Na content can provide an effective route for fine-tuning the magnetic lattice dimensionality, as well as to controlling the bond-dependent anisotropic interactions.

Coexistence of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid and magnetic order in a spin-1 antiferromagnet

We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with the first- and second-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ and a three-spin scalar chirality term $J_\chi$. Using the density matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out a global phase diagram including various magnetic order phases and an emergent quantum spin liquid phase. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a bosonic non-Abelian Moore-Read state from the fingerprint of the entanglement spectra and identification of a full set of topological sectors. We further unveil a stripe magnetic order coexisting with this spin liquid. Furthermore, our results not only establish a rare example of non-Abelian spin liquids in simple spin systems but also demonstrate the coexistence of fractionalized excitations and magnetic order beyond mean-field descriptions.

Higher-order topological corner and bond-localized modes in magnonic insulators

We theoretically investigate a two-dimensional decorated honeycomb lattice framework to realize a second-order topological magnon insulator (SOTMI) phase featuring distinct corner-localized modes. Here, our study emphasizes the pivotal role of spin-magnon mapping in characterizing bosonic topological properties, which exhibit differences from their fermionic counterparts. We employ a symmetry indicator topological invariant to identify and characterize this SOTMI phase, particularly for systems respecting time-reversal and rotational symmetry. Using a spin model defined on a honeycomb lattice geometry, we demonstrate that introducing “kekulé” type distortions yields a topological phase. In contrast, “antikekulé” distortions result in a nontopological magnonic phase. The presence of kekulé distortions manifests in two distinct topologically protected bosonic corner modes—an intrinsic and a pseudo, based on the specific edge terminations. On the other hand, antikekulé distortions give rise to Tamm/Shockley type bond-localized boundary modes, which are nontopological and reliant on particular edge termination. We further investigate the effects of random out-of-plane exchange anisotropy disorder on the robustness of these bosonic corner modes. The distinction between SOTMIs and their fermionic counterparts arises due to the system-specific magnonic onsite energies, a crucial feature often overlooked in prior literature. Our study unveils exciting prospects for engineering higher-order topological phases in magnon systems and enhances our understanding of their unique behavior within decorated honeycomb lattices.

Microscopic Theory of Pair Density Waves in Spin-Orbit Coupled Kondo Lattice

We demonstrate that the discommensuration between the Fermi surfaces of a conduction sea and an underlying spin liquid provides a natural mechanism for the spontaneous formation of pair density waves. Using a recent formulation of the Kondo lattice model that incorporates a Yao Lee spin liquid proposed by the authors, we demonstrate that doping away from half filling induces finite-momentum electron-Majorana pair condensation, resulting in amplitude-modulated pair density waves (PDWs). Our approach provides a precise, analytically tractable pathway for understanding the spontaneous formation of PDWs in higher dimensions and offers a natural mechanism for PDW formation in the absence of Zeeman splitting.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Here we study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- (J 1 ), next-nearest- (J 2 ), and third-neighbor (J 3 ) interactions by using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to L x =48 and circumference L y =6–12. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the J 1 -J 2 Heisenberg model is gapped which is characterized by the absence of gapless mode, short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of J 3 interaction, we find that a new critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short-ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi-long-ranged which decays as a power-law at long distances.

Kondo screening in a Majorana metal

Kondo impurities provide a nontrivial probe to unravel the character of the excitations of a quantum spin liquid. In the S = 1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, Kondo impurities embedded in the spin-liquid host can be screened by itinerant Majorana fermions via gauge-flux binding. Here, we report experimental signatures of metallic-like Kondo screening at intermediate temperatures in the Kitaev honeycomb material α-RuCl 3 with dilute Cr 3+ (S = 3/2) impurities. The static magnetic susceptibility, the muon Knight shift, and the muon spin-relaxation rate all feature logarithmic divergences, a hallmark of a metallic Kondo effect. Concurrently, the linear coefficient of the magnetic specific heat is large in the same temperature regime, indicating the presence of a host Majorana metal. This observation opens new avenues for exploring uncharted Kondo physics in insulating quantum magnets.

Imaging real-space flat band localization in kagome magnet FeSn

Kagome lattices host flat bands due to their frustrated lattice geometry, which leads to destructive quantum interference of electron wave functions. Here, we report imaging of the kagome flat band localization in real-space using scanning tunneling microscopy. We identify both the Fe 3 Sn kagome lattice layer and the Sn 2 honeycomb layer with atomic resolution in kagome antiferromagnet FeSn. On the Fe 3 Sn lattice, at the flat band energy determined by the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, tunneling spectroscopy detects an unusual state localized uniquely at the Fe kagome lattice network. We further show that the vectorial in-plane magnetic field manipulates the spatial anisotropy of the localization state within each kagome unit cell. Our results are consistent with the real-space flat band localization in the magnetic kagome lattice. We further discuss the magnetic tuning of flat band localization under the spin–orbit coupled magnetic kagome lattice model.

Hierarchical excitations from correlated spin tetrahedra on the breathing pyrochlore lattice

The hierarchy of the coupling strengths in a physical system often engenders an effective model at low energies where the decoupled high-energy modes are integrated out. Here, using neutron scattering, we show that the spin excitations in the breathing pyrochlore lattice compound CuInCr 4 S 8 are hierarchical and can be approximated by an effective model of correlated tetrahedra at low energies. At higher energies, intratetrahedron excitations together with strong magnon-phonon couplings are observed, which suggests the possible role of the lattice degree of freedom in stabilizing the spin tetrahedra. Finally, our work illustrates the spin dynamics in CuInCr 4 S 8 and demonstrates a general effective-cluster approach to understand the dynamics on the breathing-type lattices.

Magnetoelastic distortion of multiferroic BiFeO 3 in the canted antiferromagnetic state

Using THz spectroscopy, here we show that the spin-wave spectrum of multiferroic BiFeO 3 in its high-field canted antiferromagnetic state is well described by a spin model that violates rhombohedral symmetry. We demonstrate that the monoclinic distortion of the canted antiferromagnetic state is induced by the single-ion magnetoelastic coupling between the lattice and the two nearly antiparallel spins. The revised spin model for BiFeO 3 contains two new single-ion anisotropy terms that violate rhombohedral symmetry and depend on the direction of the magnetic field.

Machine-learning force-field models for dynamical simulations of metallic magnets

We review recent advances in machine-learning (ML) force-field methods for Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert simulations of itinerant electron magnets, focusing on their scalability and transferability. Built on the principle of locality, a deep neural-network model is developed to efficiently and accurately predict electron-mediated forces governing spin dynamics. Symmetry-aware descriptors constructed through a group-theoretical approach ensure rigorous incorporation of both lattice and spin-rotation symmetries. The framework is demonstrated using the prototypical s-d exchange model widely employed in spintronics. ML-enabled large-scale simulations reveal novel nonequilibrium phenomena, including anomalous coarsening of tetrahedral spin order on the triangular lattice and the freezing of phase-separation dynamics in lightly hole-doped, strong-coupling square-lattice systems. These results establish ML force-field frameworks as scalable, accurate, and versatile tools for modeling nonequilibrium spin dynamics in itinerant magnets.

Phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in two dimensions

A Lanczos technique is used to study the frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on square lattices of 16 and 20 sites. Frustration is introduced by an interaction along the diagonals of the plaquettes with coupling J2 greater than or equal to 0. For large J2, the ground state breaks (spontaneously) the lattice rotational symmetry. For intermediate values of J2, the squares of order parameters associated with spin-Peierls and 'twisted'states have a peak, while a similar quantity for a chiral state shows no interesting structure.

Global quantum phase diagram and non-Abelian chiral spin liquid in a spin- 3 2 square-lattice antiferromagnet

Since strong quantum fluctuations are essential for the emergence of quantum spin liquids, there have been extensive exploration and identification of spin liquid candidates in spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems, while such activities are rare in higher spin systems. Here we report an example of non-Abelian chiral spin liquid emerging in a spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. By tuning Heisenberg exchange interaction and scalar chirality interaction, we map out a quantum phase diagram enclosing three conventional magnetic orders and a chiral spin liquid based on density-matrix renormalization group studies. The nature of the spin liquid is identified as a long-sought bosonic version of the Read-Rezayi state that supports non-Abelian Fibonacci anyonic statistics, identified by the ground state entanglement spectrum. Significantly, we establish that the non-Abelian chiral spin liquid emerges through the enlarged local degrees of freedom and enhanced quantum fluctuations near the classical phase boundaries of competing magnetic orders. Finally, our numerical discovery of an exotic quantum spin liquid in a spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ system suggests a route for discovering fractionalized quantum phases in frustrated higher spin magnetic compounds.
