Protecting and Defending against Autonomous Control Systems and Digital Twin Cyber Attacks: Response Strategy for Hyperparameter attacks of Digital Twin Machine Learning Models in Nuclear Power Plants (Final)

Navigating through the complex tapestry of technological advancements, "Response Strategy for Hyperparameter attacks of Digital Twin Machine Learning Model in Nuclear Power Plants" stands at the intersection of cybersecurity and nuclear power plant operations, embarking on a journey through the intricacies of securing digital twins against malicious cyber activities. As nuclear power plants progressively integrate digital twin technology and machine learning models to optimize operations and ensure system reliability, they inadvertently expose themselves to a new spectrum of vulnerabilities, notably in the realm of hyperparameter attacks. Hyperparameters, integral in machine learning model tuning and optimal performance of digital twins, have emerged as a target for adversaries aiming to destabilize the predictive capabilities and therefore, the operational accuracy of these digital entities within critical infrastructures like nuclear plants. This paper, therefore, meticulously threads the needle through the development of a robust response strategy, poised to shield these digital reflections against calculated hyperparameter manipulations, ensuring that the digital twin can effectively and securely function as a reliable proxy for its physical counterpart. The ensuing sections delve into the orchestrated maelstrom of multi-rate time-changing intelligent coordinated hyperparameter attacks and the implementation of event-triggered predictive control, laying down a structured, predictive, and responsive framework that safeguards the nexus where the digital and physical realms of nuclear power plants coalesce. The operational integrity of digital twins in nuclear power plants depends critically on the security of machine learning hyperparameters. This study makes two different contributions. First, a decision-based idea known as a multi-rate time changing intelligent coordinated hyperparameter attack is put forth. In this attack, many hyperparameters are repeatedly changed using both random and intelligent optimal techniques by the attacker. These assaults introduce varied rates at different attack steps, compromise various amounts of hyperparameters, and improve stealth and flexibility. Second, a technique is developed for event triggered predictive control to rapidly respond to potential hyperparameter attacks. This control integrates a sliding window framework, retaining a history of previous data points and employing linear regression to predict the next data point from the current dataset. The control gain K is determined using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii method, and subsequently, an action is developed. Finally, the outcome of the simulation demonstrates the viability of the proposed method for defending nuclear power plant digital twins from hyperparameter attacks.

Induced axion-phason field in Weyl semimetals

Here, the Weyl semimetal in a constant magnetic field is investigated with the ground state for the lowest (n = 0) Landau levels corresponding to spin-down (σ 3 = -1). In the presence of an electron-phonon coupling in the ground state, an attractive interaction for the polarized spin and opposite chirality is generated. A two-body attractive interaction projected to the two lowest (n = 0) chiral Landau levels with the same spin polarization is obtained. The higher Landau level states (n ≠ 0) are treated at the one-loop approximation with the two chiralities containing spins polarized as σ 3 = ± 1. Using the chiral anomaly in one dimension we show that the sliding phase is controlled by the electric field. This theory, for a Weyl semimetal with two nodes in the direction of the applied magnetic field, gives rise to a sliding charge density wave observed by Gooth et al. [Nature (London) 575, 315 (2019)].

Relation between interfacial shear and friction force in 2D materials

Understanding the interfacial properties between an atomic layer and its substrate is of key interest at both the fundamental and technological levels. From Fermi level pinning to strain engineering and superlubricity, the interaction between a single atomic layer and its substrate governs electronic, mechanical and chemical properties. Here, we measure the hardly accessible interfacial transverse shear modulus of an atomic layer on a substrate. By performing measurements on bulk graphite, and on epitaxial graphene films on SiC with different stacking orders and twisting, as well as in the presence of intercalated hydrogen, we find that the interfacial transverse shear modulus is critically controlled by the stacking order and the atomic layer–substrate interaction. Importantly, we demonstrate that this modulus is a pivotal measurable property to control and predict sliding friction in supported two-dimensional materials. The experiments demonstrate a reciprocal relationship between friction force per unit contact area and interfacial shear modulus. As a result, the same relationship emerges from simulations with simple friction models, where the atomic layer– substrate interaction controls the shear stiffness and therefore the resulting friction dissipation.

Quality Control Metrics to Assess MoS 2 Sputtered Films for Tribological Applications [Slides]

Easily measured metrics that could assign quantifiable values to coating batches for quality control have started to be developed. High-density is an attribute of quality films. Increased density results in harder, more wear resistant coatings in inert and humid environments. Denser films are more resistant to oxidation from aging, limiting the severity and depth of oxide into the coating. Future work includes using metrics for quality. The next step is to develop in house deposition capabilities to develop process-structure relationships.

Oxygenated Fuel Blending Effects in a Mixing-Controlled Compression-Ignition Engine Equipped with Ducted Fuel Injection [Slides]

Continued creation of harmful emissions such as NO x and soot from compression-ignition engines utilizing mixing-controlled combustion systems (i.e., diesel engines) remains a problem and is the subject of on-going research. The inherently high efficiency, relatively low cost, and numerous other desirable attributes of such engines, coupled with a widely supported infrastructure, motivates their continued advancement. Recently, a scientifically distinct and mechanically simple technology called ducted fuel injection (DFI) has shown a robust ability to allow such engines to operate with simultaneously low engine-out soot and NO x emissions when it is employed with simulated exhaust-gas recirculation. To better understand the property ranges of sustainable, oxygenated-fuel blending stocks that will most improve engine performance, two oxygenated blendstocks were separately blended with a commercial diesel base fuel and tested within a heavy-duty diesel optical engine equipped with a four-duct DFI configuration. Conventional and crank-angle-resolved optical diagnostics were used to elucidate the effects of fuel ignition quality, oxygenate molecular structure, and overall oxygen content on engine performance.

Experimental and Computational Validation of a Novel Particle Flow Control Valve for CSP Systems

Particle-based Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) systems most often utilize the state-of-the art slide gate mechanism for particle flow control. The slide-gate was found to have a sensitivity of 0.354 g/s-mm, a measure of mass flow rate over actuation position [1]. Particle-based CSP developers have noted that the slide gate is conducive to particle lodging, leaking, and difficulty actuating under particle pressure as well as differential expansion of the gate from thermal cycling. The goal of this work is to design, develop and test a novel particle flow control device that can operate without any hindrance from these shortcomings.

Designing a Particle Flow Control Apparatus

Flow control within a particle-based Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) system is essential in determining the heat transfer coefficient, and therefore, the power generation capability of these systems. There are three areas where particle flow control is significant: the receivers, storage tanks, and particle-sCO2 heat exchangers. The focus of this work is on designing a new mechanism to control the flow in the particle-sCO2 heat exchangers due to the simplicity and potential cost savings when compared to the other areas of interest. The goal is for this new design to have quicker response times in terms of particle flowrate than a slide gate or flow control valve, which are designs currently used. The design resembles that of a chuck mechanism within a drill where a rotation of the sleeve elicits movement of the jaws both vertically and horizontally to close the outlet area of the nozzle. Additionally, this design will utilize the current actuator that is already used within these heat exchangers to reduce the complexity of implementation. The jaws are designed to be closed at an angle of 76˚ which is just slightly steeper than the hopper leading to the mechanism. Furthermore, this design can be tuned to limit particle bridging and other particle flow phenomena that result in blockages. The prototypes were 3D printed out of polylactic acid (PLA) and scaled up to 100%, 200%, and 400% to be able to observe the velocity profiles of the mechanism more clearly. Experiments are performed with this prototype to compare the inlet and outlet mass flow rates at different configurations of the jaws. The particles used in these experiments are 0.3mm HSP 40/70 that are commonly used in particle-based CSP systems.
