The minimal residual QR-factorization algorithm for reliably solving subset regression problems

A new algorithm to solve test subset regression problems is described, called the minimal residual QR factorization algorithm (MRQR). This scheme performs a QR factorization with a new column pivoting strategy. Basically, this strategy is based on the change in the residual of the least squares problem. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that this basic scheme might be extended in a numerically efficient way to combine the advantages of existing numerical procedures, such as the singular value decomposition, with those of more classical statistical procedures, such as stepwise regression. This extension is presented as an advisory expert system that guides the user in solving the subset regression problem. The advantages of the new procedure are highlighted by a numerical example.

Quality indicators for trace gas concentrations determined from earthlimb emission spectra

Different techniques which can be used to indicate the quality of the mixing ratios retrieved from spectral radiance measurements made by the CLAES instrument for 11 different atmospheric gases are discussed. A key to retrieval from noisy data is the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), which is described. The use of the SVD with simulated data and radiance measurements from a balloon floating at 30 km is discussed.

Full-envelope aerodynamic modeling of the Harrier aircraft

A project to identify a full-envelope model of the YAV-8B Harrier using flight-test and parameter identification techniques is described. As part of the research in advanced control and display concepts for V/STOL aircraft, a full-envelope aerodynamic model of the Harrier is identified, using mathematical model structures and parameter identification methods. A global-polynomial model structure is also used as a basis for the identification of the YAV-8B aerodynamic model. State estimation methods are used to ensure flight data consistency prior to parameter identification.Equation-error methods are used to identify model parameters. A fixed-base simulator is used extensively to develop flight test procedures and to validate parameter identification software. Using simple flight maneuvers, a simulated data set was created covering the YAV-8B flight envelope from about 0.3 to 0.7 Mach and about -5 to 15 deg angle of attack. A singular value decomposition implementation of the equation-error approach produced good parameter estimates based on this simulated data set.

An application of eigenspace methods to symmetric flutter suppression

An eigenspace assignment approach to the design of parameter insensitive control laws for linear multivariable systems is presented. The control design scheme utilizes flexibility in eigenvector assignments to reduce control system sensitivity to changes in system parameters. The methods involve use of the singular value decomposition to provide an exact description of allowable eigenvectors in terms of a minimum number of design parameters. In a design example, the methods are applied to the problem of symmetric flutter suppression in an aeroelastic vehicle. In this example the flutter mode is sensitive to changes in dynamic pressure and eigenspace methods are used to enhance the performance of a stabilizing minimum energy/linear quadratic regulator controller and associated observer. Results indicate that the methods provide feedback control laws that make stability of the nominal closed loop systems insensitive to changes in dynamic pressure.

Deconvolution results for wide field-of-view radiometer measurements of reflected solar radiation

The measurement of reflected solar radiation by spacecraft wide-field-of-view radiometers is considered analytically, and the method proposed by Smith (1987) for the solution of the discretized governing equations is described and demonstrated. The theoretical basis of the singular-value decomposition method (partitioning the albedo field into observable and unobservable components) is outlined; its application to Nimbus 7 ERB data is explained in detail; and numerical results are presented in graphs and maps and briefly characterized.

An application of eigenspace methods to symmetric flutter suppression

An eigenspace assignment approach to the design of parameter insensitive control laws for linear multivariable systems is presented. The control design scheme utilizes constrained optimization techniques to exploit the flexibility in eigenvector assignments to reduce control system sensitivity to changes in system parameters while maintaining performance requirements; it thus provides a systematic approach for choosing values for eigensystem design variables. Numerical results indicate that the methods provide feedback control laws that make the stability of the nominal closed loop systems less sensitive to changes in dynamic pressure, while maintaining acceptable control power and robustness constraints.

Attitude determination and parameter estimation using vector observations

Procedures for attitude determination based on Wahba's loss function are generalized to include the estimation of parameters other than the attitude, such as sensor biases. Optimization with respect to the attitude requires either the singular value decomposition of a 3x3 matrix or finding the maximum eigenvalue and corresponding eigenvector of a 4x4 symmetric matrix, but does not require an a priori estimate of the attitude. Optimization with respect to the other parameters employs an iterative approach, which does require an a priori estimate of these parameters. Conventional state estimation methods require a priori estimates of both the parameters and the attitude, while the algorithms presented in this paper always compute the exact optimal attitude for given values of the parameters. The proposed method is shown to give the correct solution of an example problem. An expression for the covariance of the attitude and parameter estimates is derived.

Experimental verification of a large flexible manipulator

A large experimental lightweight manipulator would be useful for material handling, for welding, or for ultrasonic inspection of a large structure, such as an airframe. The flexible parallel link mechanism is designed for high rigidity without increasing weight. This constrained system is analyzed by singular value decomposition of the constraint Jacobian matrix. A verification of the modeling using the assumed mode method is presented. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the linearized model are compared to the measured system natural frequencies and their associated mode shapes. The modeling results for large motions are compared to the time response data from the experiments. The hydraulic actuator is verified.

Eigenstructure assignment for the control of highly augmented aircraft

Eigenstructure assignment is utilized to design flight control laws for aircraft with many control effectors. It is shown that a previous eigenstructure design for the flight propulsion control coupling (FPCC) aircraft lateral dynamics with three control surfaces exhibits a lack of stability robustness because the control distribution matrix is nearly rank-deficient. A method is mapped back, reducing the control space to two dimensions by using the singular value decomposition. After the design is complete, the controller is mapped back to the original three-dimensional control space. This design approach yields a controller with both smaller gains and improved multivariable stability margins at the aircraft inputs. An interesting characteristics of the control mapping, as applied to the given example, is that the most effective inputs have the larger gains while the less effective inputs have smaller gains.

On correcting radial orbit errors for altimetric satellites using crossover analysis

A method is proposed for correcting radial orbit error in measurements of sea surface height using a satellite altimeter. Traditionally, the orbit error is modeled in terms of a Fourier series with the Fourier coefficients determined by minimizing the residual crossover difference in a least-squares sense. In this method an a priori constraint must be imposed to obtain a unique solution. It is shown that by using singular value decomposition, no such constraint is needed. This proposed method leaves the geographically dependent errors unchanged and makes only those corrections warranted by the information contained in crossover differences. Thus, the resultant ocean topography is free from any undue distortion which might be incurred by an a priori constraint. It is suggested that the method is useful for application to high-accuracy altimetric mission, because the orbit error can be reduced without compromising the accuracy of the measured mean ocean topography.

Constraint elimination in dynamical systems

Large space structures (LSSs) and other dynamical systems of current interest are often extremely complex assemblies of rigid and flexible bodies subjected to kinematical constraints. A formulation is presented for the governing equations of constrained multibody systems via the application of singular value decomposition (SVD). The resulting equations of motion are shown to be of minimum dimension.

An interpretation and solution of ill-conditioned linear equations

Data insufficiency, poorly conditioned matrices and singularities in equations occur regularly in complex optimization, correlation, and interdisciplinary model studies. This work concerns itself with two methods of obtaining certain physically realistic solutions to ill-conditioned or singular algebraic systems of linear equations arising from such studies. Two efficient computational solution procedures that generally lead to locally unique solutions are presented when there is insufficient data to completely define the model, or a least-squares error formulation of this system results in an ill-conditioned system of equations. If it is assumed that a reasonable estimate of the uncertain data is available in both cases cited above, then we shall show how to obtain realistic solutions efficiently, in spite of the insufficiency of independent data. The proposed methods of solution are more efficient than singular-value decomposition for dealing with such systems, since they do not require solutions for all the non-zero eigenvalues of the coefficient matrix.

Applications of square-root information filtering and smoothing in spacecraft orbit determination

The JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Orbit Determination Software System is a set of computer programs developed for the primary purpose of determining the flight path of deep-space mission spacecraft in NASA's Planetary Program and highly elliptical orbiting spacecraft in Earth orbit. The filtering processes available within the JPL Orbit Determination Software are discussed, and several examples are presented. In particular, solutions obtained by the Square Root Information Filter (SRIF) using Bierman's Estimation Subroutine Library (ESL) are discussed and compared with the solutions obtained by the singular value decomposition (SVD) technique. It is concluded that the SRIF filtering and smoothing algorithms are efficient and numerically stable for well-conditioned systems. The use of Bierman's ESL simplifies the task of maintaining the orbit determination software by providing efficient, tested filtering tools. For solving a large well-conditioned system (rank higher than 120), SRIF is approximately four times faster than SVD; however, for solving an ill-conditioned system, SVD is recommended.

On eigensystem assignment with output feedback

A new approach for the eigenvalue assignment of linear, first-order, time-invariant systems using output feedback is developed. The approach can assign the maximum allowable number of closed-loop eigenvalues through output feedback provided that the system is fully controllable and observable, and both the input influence and output influence matrices are full rank. First, a collection of bases for the space of attainable closed-loop eigenvectors is generated using the Singular Value Decomposition or QR Decomposition techniques. Then, an algorithm based on subspace intersections is developed and used to compute the corresponding coefficients of the bases, and the required output feedback gain matrix. Moreover, the additional freedom provided by the multi-inputs and multi-outputs beyond the eigenvalue assignment is characterized for possible exploitation. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the viability of the proposed approach.

Constraining the North Atlantic circulation with tritium data

The North Atlantic circulation derived from an inverse calculation by singular-value decomposition is tested against the historical record of tritium. A forward calculation of the tritium transient is performed using the circulation model, published estimates of atmospheric injection rates, and plausible estimates of the tracer history at the open boundaries of the model. The results do not agree with observations of the interior distributions of tritium. Consideration is given to the possibility of improving the agreement by modifying the atmospheric injection rates and the initial estimates of open boundary time histories, treating the boundary conditions as control variables.

Doppler radar imaging of spherical planetary surfaces

This paper describes a technique for using echo power-spectra for making radar images of spherical planetary targets. In developing the Doppler-radar imaging system, the target's reflectivity distribution is expanded in a truncated spherical harmonic series; the distribution of echo power in rotational phase and the Doppler frequency are obtained in form of a system of linear equations which express the echo spectra as functions of the series coefficients. To estimate the coefficients from an observed phase-Doppler distribution, the inversion is cast as a least-squares problem, and is solved using singular value decompositions, yielding a linear imaging system which can be fully characterized by its impulse response as a function of latitude. Simulations were designed and used to explore the capabilities of Doppler radar imaging, and the sensitivity of imaging to such factors as subradar altitude coverage and signal-to-noise ratio was investigated.

Dynamic Analysis and Control of Lightweight Manipulators with Flexible Parallel Link Mechanisms

The objective is the theoretical analysis and the experimental verification of dynamics and control of a two link flexible manipulator with a flexible parallel link mechanism. Nonlinear equations of motion of the lightweight manipulator are derived by the Lagrangian method in symbolic form to better understand the structure of the dynamic model. The resulting equation of motion have a structure which is useful to reduce the number of terms calculated, to check correctness, or to extend the model to higher order. A manipulator with a flexible parallel link mechanism is a constrained dynamic system whose equations are sensitive to numerical integration error. This constrained system is solved using singular value decomposition of the constraint Jacobian matrix. Elastic motion is expressed by the assumed mode method. Mode shape functions of each link are chosen using the load interfaced component mode synthesis. The discrepancies between the analytical model and the experiment are explained using a simplified and a detailed finite element model.

GPS measurements of deformation associated with the 1987 Superstition Hills earthquake: Evidence for conjugate faulting

Large station displacements observed from Imperial Valley Global Positioning System (GPS) campaigns are attributed to the November 24, 1987 Superstition Hills earthquake sequence. Thirty sites from a 42 station GPS network established in 1986 were reoccupied during 1988 and/or 1990. Displacements at three sites within 3 kilometers of the surface rupture approach 0.5 m. Eight additional stations within 20 km of the seismic zone are displaced at least 10 cm. This is the first occurrence of a large earthquake (M(sub S) 6.6) within a preexisting GPS network. Best-fitting uniform slip models of rectangular dislocations in an elastic half-space indicate 130 + or - 8 cm right-lateral displacement along the northwest-trending Superstition Hills fault and 30 + or - 10 cm left-lateral displacement along the conjugate northeast-trending Elmore Ranch fault. The geodetic moments are 9.4 x 10(exp 25) dyne-cm and 2.3 x 10(exp 25) dyne-cm for the Superstition Hills and Elmore Ranch faults, respectively, consistent with teleseismic source parameters. The data also suggest the post seismic slip along the Superstition Hills fault is concentrated at shallow depths. Distributed slip solutions using Singular Value Decomposition indicate near uniform displacement along the Elmore Ranch fault and concentrated slip to the northwest and southeast along the Superstition Hills fault. A significant component of non-seismic displacement is observed across the Imperial Valley, which is attributed in part to interseismic plate-boundary deformation.
