Syntactic and Semantic Validation without a Metadata Management System

The ability to maintain quality information is essential to securing the confidence in any system for which the information serves as a data source. NASA's Global Change Master Directory (GCMD), an online Earth science data locator, holds over 9000 data set descriptions and is in a constant state of flux as metadata are created and updated on a daily basis. In such a system, the importance of maintaining the consistency and integrity of these-metadata is crucial. The GCMD has developed a metadata management system utilizing XML, controlled vocabulary, and Java technologies to ensure the metadata not only adhere to valid syntax, but also exhibit proper semantics.

Report on Automated Semantic Analysis of Scientific and Engineering Codes

The loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter due to a software error reveals what insiders know: software development is difficult and risky because, in part, current practices do not readily handle the complex details of software. Yet, for scientific software development the MCO mishap represents the tip of the iceberg; few errors are so public, and many errors are avoided with a combination of expertise, care, and testing during development and modification. Further, this effort consumes valuable time and resources even when hardware costs and execution time continually decrease. Software development could use better tools! This lack of tools has motivated the semantic analysis work explained in this report. However, this work has a distinguishing emphasis; the tool focuses on automated recognition of the fundamental mathematical and physical meaning of scientific code. Further, its comprehension is measured by quantitatively evaluating overall recognition with practical codes. This emphasis is necessary if software errors-like the MCO error-are to be quickly and inexpensively avoided in the future. This report evaluates the progress made with this problem. It presents recommendations, describes the approach, the tool's status, the challenges, related research, and a development strategy.

A Semantic Theory of Abstractions: A Preliminary Report

In this paper we present a semantic theory of abstractions based on viewing abstractions as interpretations between theories. This theory captures important aspects of abstractions not captured in the theory of abstractions presented by Giunchiglia and Walsh. Instead of viewing abstractions as syntactic mappings, we view abstractions as a two step process: the intended domain model is first abstracted and then a set of (abstract) formulas is constructed to capture the abstracted domain model. Viewing and justifying abstractions as model level transformations is both natural and insightful. We provide a precise characterization of the abstract theory that exactly implements the intended abstraction, and show that this theory, while being axiomatizable, is not always finitely axiomatizable. A simple corollary of the latter result disproves a conjecture made by Tenenberg that if a theory is finitely axiomatizable, then predicate abstraction of that theory leads to a finitely axiomatizable theory.

Research Prototype: Automated Analysis of Scientific and Engineering Semantics

Physical and mathematical formulae and concepts are fundamental elements of scientific and engineering software. These classical equations and methods are time tested, universally accepted, and relatively unambiguous. The existence of this classical ontology suggests an ideal problem for automated comprehension. This problem is further motivated by the pervasive use of scientific code and high code development costs. To investigate code comprehension in this classical knowledge domain, a research prototype has been developed. The prototype incorporates scientific domain knowledge to recognize code properties (including units, physical, and mathematical quantity). Also, the procedure implements programming language semantics to propagate these properties through the code. This prototype's ability to elucidate code and detect errors will be demonstrated with state of the art scientific codes.

Semantic Annotation of Computational Components

This paper describes a methodology to specify machine-processable semantic descriptions of computational components to enable them to be shared and reused. A particular focus of this scheme is to enable automatic compositon of such components into simple work-flows.

Intelligent Information Fusion in the Aviation Domain: A Semantic-Web based Approach

Information fusion from multiple sources is a critical requirement for System Wide Information Management in the National Airspace (NAS). NASA and the FAA envision creating an "integrated pool" of information originally coming from different sources, which users, intelligent agents and NAS decision support tools can tap into. In this paper we present the results of our initial investigations into the requirements and prototype development of such an integrated information pool for the NAS. We have attempted to ascertain key requirements for such an integrated pool based on a survey of DSS tools that will benefit from this integrated pool. We then advocate key technologies from computer science research areas such as the semantic web, information integration, and intelligent agents that we believe are well suited to achieving the envisioned system wide information management capabilities.

Project Integration Architecture: Formulation of Dimensionality in Semantic Parameters Outline

One of several key elements of the Project Integration Architecture (PIA) is the formulation of parameter objects which convey meaningful semantic information. The infusion of measurement dimensionality into such objects is an important part of that effort since it promises to automate the conversion of units between cooperating applications and, thereby, eliminate the mistakes that have occasionally beset other systems of information transport. This paper discusses the conceptualization of dimensionality developed as a result of that effort.

Semantic Annotation of Complex Text Structures in Problem Reports

Text analysis is important for effective information retrieval from databases where the critical information is embedded in text fields. Aerospace safety depends on effective retrieval of relevant and related problem reports for the purpose of trend analysis. The complex text syntax in problem descriptions has limited statistical text mining of problem reports. The presentation describes an intelligent tagging approach that applies syntactic and then semantic analysis to overcome this problem. The tags identify types of problems and equipment that are embedded in the text descriptions. The power of these tags is illustrated in a faceted searching and browsing interface for problem report trending that combines automatically generated tags with database code fields and temporal information.

Towards a Formal Semantics of Flight Plans and Trajectories

In the National Airspace System, ight plans are often used only as a planning tool by air trac controllers and aircraft operators. These plans are implicitly translated into trajectories by the pilot or by the ight management system, and subsequently own by the aircraft. This translation process inevitably introduces di erences between the plan and the trajectory. However, given the current intended usage, exact correspondence between the plan and the trajectory is not needed. To achieve greater capacity and eciency, future air trac management concepts are being designed around the use of trajectories where predictability is extremely important. In this paper, a mathematical relationship between ight plans and trajectories is explored with the goal of making feasible, highly accurate predictions of future positions and velocities of aircraft. The goal here is to describe, in mathematically precise detail, a formal language of trajectories, whereby all receivers of the trajectory information will be able to arrive at precisely the same trajectory predication and to do this without having aircraft broadcast a large amount of data. Although even a four-dimensional ight plan is simple in structure, this paper will show that it is inherently ambiguous and will explore these issues in detail. In e ect, we propose that a rigorous semantics for ight plans can be developed and this will serve as an important stepping stone towards trajectory-based operations in the National Airspace System.

NASA's ATM Ontology: Semantic Integration and Querying Across NAS Data Sources

NASA is developing an Air Traffic Management (ATM) Ontology as part of an advanced prototyping activity that demonstrates the utility of semantic technologies for integrating, querying, and searching over various sources of heterogeneous ATM data. The ontology encodes an overarching data model that functions as the backbone upon which to overlay data from multiple sources published by FAA, NOAA, NASA, and others. The integrated data can be queried to produce results not achievable using any single source alone. The ontology incorporates flight data, weather data, traffic management advisory data, airport delay data, and national airspace infrastructure data for a very limited spatial and temporal slice of airspace operations (one day of operations at a major airport).

Automated Semantic Segmentation for Volumetric Cardiovascular Feature Quantification and Pathology Assessment

We present a pipeline method that curtails the expense and observer bias of manual cardiac evaluation by combining semantic segmentation and disease classification as a fully automatic processing pipeline. The initial element consists of a 2D U-Net convolutional neural network architecture for voxel-wise segmentation of the myocardium and ventricular cavities. The results of the segmentation were used to compute a comprehensive volumetric feature matrix that captured diagnostic clinical procedure data and that was used to model a cardiac pathology classifier.Our approach evaluated anonymized parasternal MRI cardiac images from a database of 100 patients (4 pathology groups, 1 healthy group, 20 patients per group) examined at the University Hospital of Dijon. We achieved top average Dice index scores of 0.939, 0.849, 0.886 for structure segmentation of the left ventricle (LV), right ventricle (RV) and myocardium respectively. A 5-ary pathology classification accuracy of 90% was recorded on an independent test set using our trained model.

Information Extraction on an Earth Science Knowledge Graphs with Semantic Parsing

Knowledge graphs are an important tool, both for representing knowledge and for retrieving information. Fundamentally, they are semantic networks that represent entities and relationships in the form of nodes and edges. A large corpus of natural language text can bebroken down into discrete entities and relationships to form a useful knowledge graph. Existing research breaks down text into a subject, object, and verb relationship triple. Although this is a useful first step, it loses much of the original contextual information encoded within the text. Our process uses a novel 7-tuple approach, in which elements of sentences are programmatically parsed into seven categories: initiator, impacted, receiver, beneficiary, result, and context. In this presentation, we show a knowledge graph built using this 7-tupleprocessing of an Earth science corpus. We explain the techniques used to create the graph and analyze its information retrieval capability while assessing the accuracy and limitations of the results.

Detecting and Characterizing Semantic Inconsistencies in Ported Code

Adding similar features and bug fixes often requires porting program patches from reference implementations and adapting them to target implementations. Porting errors may result from faulty adaptations or inconsistent updates. This paper investigates (1) the types of porting errors found in practice, and (2) how to detect and characterize potential porting errors. Analyzing version histories, we define five categories of porting errors, including incorrect control- and data-flow, code redundancy, inconsistent identifier renamings, etc. Leveraging this categorization, we design a static control- and data-dependence analysis technique, SPA, to detect and characterize porting inconsistencies. Our evaluation on code from four open-source projects shows that SPA can detect porting inconsistencies with 65% to 73% precision and 90% recall, and identify inconsistency types with 58% to 63% precision and 92% to 100% recall. In a comparison with two existing error detection tools, SPA improves precision by 14 to 17 percentage points.

Semantic Segmentation of High-Resolution Satellite Imagery using Generative Adversarial Networks with Progressive Growing

With increase in urbanization and Earth Sciences research into urban areas, the need to quickly and accurately segment urban rooftop maps has never been greater. Cur-rent machine learning techniques struggle to produce high accuracy maps in dense urban zones where there is high image noise and foot print overlap. In this paper, we evaluate a training methodology for pixel-wise segmentation for high resolution satellite imagery using progressive growing of generative adversarial networks as a solution. We apply our model to segmenting building rooftops and compare these results to conventional methods for rooftop segmentation. We evaluate our approach using the SpaceNet version 2 and xView datasets. Our experiments show that for SpaceNet, progressive Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) training achieved a test accuracy of 93% compared to 89% for traditional GAN training and 87% for U-Net architecture, while for xView, we achieved 71% accuracy using progressive GAN training compared to 69% through traditional GAN training and 65% using U-Net.

Response time effects of alerting tone and semantic context for synthesized voice cockpit warnings

Some handbooks and human factors design guides have recommended that a voice warning should be preceded by a tone to attract attention to the warning. As far as can be determined from a search of the literature, no experimental evidence supporting this exists. A fixed-base simulator flown by airline pilots was used to test the hypothesis that the total 'system-time' to respond to a synthesized voice cockpit warning would be longer when the message was preceded by a tone because the voice itself was expected to perform both the alerting and the information transfer functions. The simulation included realistic ATC radio voice communications, synthesized engine noise, cockpit conversation, and realistic flight routes. The effect of a tone before a voice warning was to lengthen response time; that is, responses were slower with an alerting tone. Lengthening the voice warning with another work, however, did not increase response time.
