The tracking system analytic calibration activity for Mariner Mars 1971: Its function and scope

The functions of the Tracking System Analytic Calibration activity for Mariner Mars 1971 (MM'71), its objectives for this and future missions, and the support provided to the MM'71 Navigation Team during operations are described. Support functions encompass calibration of tracking data by estimating physical parameters whose uncertainties represent limitations to navigational accuracy, and detailed analysis of the tracking data to uncover and resolve any anomalies. Separate articles treat the activities and results of producing calibrations for the various error sources: Deep Space Station Locations, timing and polar motion, charged particles, and the troposphere. Two other articles are also included discussing the effects of the media error sources on orbit determination and the merits of the smoothing technique used for DRIVID.

Multidisciplinary research in the space sciences. Scope B: Experimental X-ray astronomy

A research program to design and develop instruments suitable for rocket-borne X-ray astronomy experiments is discussed. Successful designs that were implemented are summarized. The designs include the following: (1) a large area modular X-ray focusing system, (2) incoherent scattering polarimeters, (3) Bragg crystal spectrometers and polarimeters, and (4) a focusing collector for long wavelength. The applications of these instruments to the observation of X-ray sources in rocket-borne experiments are analyzed.

The NASA Scientific and Technical Information System: Its scope and coverage

Subjects of scientific and technical documents considered for inclusion in NASA's information bank are broadly summarized under the various categories used in Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports and International Aerospace Abstracts. A general definition of each category is followed by a list of the aspects of each subject which are of exhaustive, selective, or negative interest because of their relevance to aerospace science and technology and to other NASA projects.

The location and scope of geographic remote sensing training in the United States

Maps displaying the distribution of graduate departments of geography in the United States and enrollments in remote sensing courses in all geography departments during the past two calendar years were compiled. It was anticipated that the two distributions would show a marked similarity since remote sensing is a relatively new geographic tool requiring specialized training to use as well as equipment not normally found in most geography departments. Thus only the larger graduate departments can afford to devote time and resources to this specialty. A broad correspondence does exist between the graduate departments of geography and the courses in remote ensing. However, the correlation is far from complete and the exceptions are frequent and large enough to cast doubt upon the accuracy of the original hypothesis. Whereas many large departments do offer courses in remote sensing, many smaller colleges and universities do also. A number of possible explanations can be offered for the discrepancies: (1) course titles, (2) the liberal arts orientation of geography departments in many universities, (3) job-oriented skills which many smaller departments have emphasized, and (4) in the tight job market many new graduates of even the larger departments have had to accept position in smaller departments and colleges.

The NASA data systems standardization program - Rationale and scope

A simple, top level logical reference model of the NASA Space Transportation System's end-to-end data system is being developed which can identify the functions and services of the system. Each function or service may be mapped into specific physical subsystems, so that interface relationships are evident and 'standard' protocols may be identified for development. By means of this interface standardization, subsystems can be designed not only independently and in parallel, but with confidence that when the subsystems are aggregated, the end-to-end system will operate efficiently and at low cost. This standardization effort has thus far been principally directed toward space-to-ground communications links.
