Autonomous planning and scheduling on the TechSat 21 mission

Integrating Existing Simulation Components into a Cohesive Simulation System

A tradition of leveraging the re-use of components to help manage costs has evolved in the development of complex system. This tradition continues on in the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Program with the cloning of the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite for the JPSS-1 mission, including the instrument complement. One benefit of re-use on a mission is the availability of existing simulation assets from the systems that were previously built. An issue arises in the continual shift of technology over a long mission, or multi-mission, lifecycle. As the missions mature, the requirements for the observatory simulations evolve. The challenge in this environment becomes re-using the existing components in that ever-changing landscape. To meet this challenge, the system must: establish an operational architecture that minimizes impacts on the implementation of individual components, consolidate the satisfaction of new high-impact requirements into system-level infrastructure, and build in a long-term view of system adaptation that spans the full lifecycle of the simulation system. The Flight Vehicle Test Suite (FVTS) within the JPSS Program is defining and executing this approach to ensure a robust simulation capability for the JPSS multi-mission environment

Numerical Computation of a Continuous-thrust State Transition Matrix Incorporating Accurate Hardware and Ephemeris Models

A significant body of work exists showing that providing a nonlinear programming (NLP) solver with expressions for the problem constraint gradient substantially increases the speed of program execution and can also improve the robustness of convergence, especially for local optimizers. Calculation of these derivatives is often accomplished through the computation of spacecraft's state transition matrix (STM). If the two-body gravitational model is employed as is often done in the context of preliminary design, closed form expressions for these derivatives may be provided. If a high fidelity dynamics model, that might include perturbing forces such as the gravitational effect from multiple third bodies and solar radiation pressure is used then these STM's must be computed numerically. We present a method for the power hardward model and a full ephemeris model. An adaptive-step embedded eight order Dormand-Prince numerical integrator is discussed and a method for the computation of the time of flight derivatives in this framework is presented. The use of these numerically calculated derivatieves offer a substantial improvement over finite differencing in the context of a global optimizer. Specifically the inclusion of these STM's into the low thrust missiondesign tool chain in use at NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center allows for an increased preliminary mission design cadence.

SafeDNN: Understanding and Verifying Neural Networks

The SafeDNN project at NASA Ames explores analysis techniques and tools to ensure that systems that use Deep Neural Networks (DNN) are safe, robust and interpretable. Research directions we are pursuing include: symbolic execution for DNN analysis, label-guided clustering to automatically identify input regions that are robust, parallel and compositional approaches to improve formal SMT-based verification, property inference and automated program repair for DNNs, adversarial training and detection, probabilistic reasoning for DNNs. In this talk I will highlight some of the research advances from SafeDNN, that were already published.

Autonomous Science Restart for the Planned Europa Mission with Lightweight Planning and Execution

In this paper we present MEXEC - a lightweight on-board planning and execution system that monitors spacecraft state to robustly respond to current conditions. In addition it projects the remaining plan forward in time to detect conflicts and revise the plan. Most current planetary missions use sequence based commanding from the ground,which limits the ability to respond to on-board state varying from planned for state. This results in planning for worst-case execution time, power utilization, data volume and other resources and leads to under utilization of the spacecraft capability. It also limits the ability to respond to faults. Due to the high radiation environment at Jupiter the probability of flight software resets is high. Therefore, of particular interest to the planned Europa Mission is the capability to restart the science plan after flight software resets. In this paper we present results from running Europa flyby scenarios with flight software resets in the Europa flight software test environment. Preliminary results with the prototype scenario show MEXEC takes less than a tenth of a second to respond to resets. The development was done as part of Europa-focused flight software, but MEXEC was designed to be applicable to landers and rovers as well.

Dynamic Scheduling Under Uncertainty

Often, autonomous agents that operate in real-world environments must be able to schedule and execute actions to accomplish mission goals while being robust to uncertainty and disturbances that arise during operations. This tutorial will focus on classes of models and algorithms that have been used to enable effective, robust strategies for dynamically dispatching plans in real time. The tutorial will begin with a survey of past and current research in modeling uncertainty in planning and scheduling, as well as research in different classes of approaches to dynamic scheduling. We then focus on a general class of approaches based on executing temporal plans using graphical models of events and their temporal ordering. These approaches allow for ensuring temporal flexibility in scheduling, as well as for developing strategies for executing partially controllable plans.

A sampling-based optimization approach to handling environmental uncertainty for a planetary lander

Planning for unknown environments presents a number of technical challenges. The planner must ensure robustness to unknown phenomena and manage unpredictable variation in execution, all while operating in a capacity that maximizes its objective. Productivity in the face of these challenges re-quires an integrated approach to planning and execution that is capable of accomplishing goals, reacting to variation, and maximizing overall utility. We examine this problem in the context of a Europa Lander concept mission. We model the problem as a hierarchical task network, framing it as a utility maximization problem constrained on a depletable energy resource. We propose an uncertainty–sensitive deterministic planning framework that utilizes periodic replanning to better handle model uncertainty and variable execution. We demonstrate the efficacy of our framework through simulations of a Europa Lander concept mission in which our algorithm out-performs several baseline approaches in both utility maximization and robustness

A new Lagrangian random choice method for steady two-dimensional supersonic/hypersonic flow

Glimm's (1965) random choice method has been successfully applied to compute steady two-dimensional supersonic/hypersonic flow using a new Lagrangian formulation. The method is easy to program, fast to execute, yet it is very accurate and robust. It requires no grid generation, resolves slipline and shock discontinuities crisply, can handle boundary conditions most easily, and is applicable to hypersonic as well as supersonic flow. It represents an accurate and fast alternative to the existing Eulerian methods. Many computed examples are given.

Navigation and Mission Design for Low-Thrust Insertion into Near Rectilinear Halo Orbits

Near Rectilinear Halo Orbits, the target of NASA’s Gateway, are slightly unstable and therefore require minimal insertion delta-V. This makes insertion using highly efficient low-thrust systems a viable and attractive option; however, it also may require the spacecraft to approach the insertion on a dynamically sensitive trajectory with multiple perilune passes. This study focuses on a low-thrust NRHO insertion from a spiral-out, Earth-to-Moon transfer that involves this type of dynamically sensitive approach. Correction maneuver and navigation strategies are found that are robust to initial state, navigation, and maneuver execution errors prior to and through insertion. Further, it is demonstrated that these maneuver and navigation strategies allow the spacecraft to transition to nominal NRHO stationkeeping after insertion, without the need for specially designed clean-up maneuvers or a significant amount of additional delta-V.

Space Launch Systems Block 1B Preliminary Navigation System Design

NASA is currently building the Space Launch Systems (SLS) Block 1 launch vehicle for the Exploration Mission 1 (EM-1) test flight. In parallel, NASA is also designing the Block 1B launch vehicle. The Block 1B vehicle is an evolution of the Block 1 vehicle and extends the capability of the NASA launch vehicle. This evolution replaces the Interim Cryogenic Propulsive Stage (ICPS) with the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS). As the vehicle evolves to provide greater lift capability, increased robustness for manned missions, and the capability to execute more demanding missions so must the SLS Integrated Navigation System evolved to support those missions. This paper describes the preliminary navigation systems design for the SLS Block 1B vehicle. The evolution of the navigation hard-ware and algorithms from an inertial-only navigation system for Block 1 ascent flight to a tightly coupled GPS-aided inertial navigation system for Block 1B is described. The Block 1 GN&C system has been designed to meet a LEO insertion target with a specified accuracy. The Block 1B vehicle navigation system is de-signed to support the Block 1 LEO target accuracy as well as trans-lunar or trans-planetary injection accuracy. Additionally, the Block 1B vehicle is designed to support human exploration and thus is designed to minimize the probability of Loss of Crew (LOC) through high-quality inertial instruments and robust algorithm design, including Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery (FDIR) logic.

Robust rendezvous maneuver point conditions

This study develops rendezvous maneuver point conditions that are robust to one dimensional errors in state estimation and burn execution. Allowing small deviations in the time of intercept provides a degree of freedom that can be used to compensate for these errors. The direction of allowable burn deviation is developed for errors in state estimation and burn execution. The maneuver points for which the error is aligned with the insensitive direction provide excellent rendezvous initiation points. The method is applied to sample rendezvous for vehicles in circular and elliptic orbits. Robust maneuver points are selected and the vehicles' relative motion plotted, demonstrating the validity of the maneuver points. Finally, a graphical illustration of the error focusing effect is demonstrated by means of a Monte Carlo simulation.
