Delayed ripple counter simplifies square-root computation

Ripple subtract technique simplifies the logic circuitry required in a binary computing device to derive the square root of a number. Successively higher numbers are subtracted from a register containing the number out of which the square root is to be extracted. The last number subtracted will be the closest integer to the square root of the number.

Electronic ripple indicator

Electronic circuit for monitoring excessive ripple voltage on dc power lines senses voltage variations from few millivolts to maximum of 10 volts rms. Instrument is used wherever power supply fluctuations might endanger system operations or damage equipment. Device is inexpensive and easily packaged in small chassis.

Thermal ripples in a resistive and radiative instability

The development of the resistive tearing instability in the case of sheared magnetic fields is considered, taking into account also the occurrence of a radiatively driven thermal instability. It is pointed out that thermal conduction has generally been neglected in theories similar to those discussed. The present investigation is concerned with a consideration of both parallel and perpendicular thermal conduction, in addition to finite resistivity and radiative loss. Attention is given to the equations and the model, the spatial singularity which arises with consideration of only the parallel heat conduction, the removal of this singularity and the formation of temperature oscillations (thermal ripples) by inclusion of the perpendicular heat-flux component, and details regarding the numerical procedure. A brief explanation is provided of the conditions required for the oscillations, and potential implications of the results with respect to the solar flare are discussed.

Rippled Quasiperpendicular Shock Observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale Spacecraft

Collisionless shock nonstationarity arising from microscale physics influences shock structure and particle acceleration mechanisms. Nonstationarity has been difficult to quantify due to the small spatial and temporal scales. We use the closely spaced (subgyroscale), high-time-resolution measurements from one rapid crossing of Earths quasiperpendicular bow shock by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft to compare competing nonstationarity processes. Using MMSs high-cadence kinetic plasma measurements, we show that the shock exhibits nonstationarity in the form of ripples.

A GaN-based Four-Switch Buck-Boost Converter using Ripple Correlation Control for Maximum Power Point Tracking in Dynamic Deep Space Environments

As the demand for high-performance power conversion in spacecraft continues to grow and spacecraft mass and volume budgets become increasingly tight, it is essential to design DC-DC converters with higher efficiency and power density. Although photovoltaic (PV) efficiency has increased over time, solar irradiance and temperatures can fluctuate dramatically in deep space. This causes significant variations in the maximum power point (MPP) of the PV array, which can decrease the overall system efficiency unless accounted for. Thus, it is imperative to track the MPP of the PV panels to maintain optimal efficiency. This paper presents the experimental development of a four-switch, GaN-based buck-boost converter with an implementation of the Ripple Correlation Control (RCC) MPPT algorithm for dynamic deep space environments. Due to the use of GaN HEMTs, the experimental system achieves better efficiency and power density compared to the previous state of the art implementations. A simulation of the prototype buck-boost converter was implemented in SaberRD (Synopsis), and a digital design of the RCC-based MPPT controller utilizing the StateAMS tool is presented. The simulation results show that this controller swiftly and precisely converged to the MPP of the source PV panels in a dynamic solar irradiance condition.

Ripple-Type Control for Enhancing Resilience of Networked Physical Systems: Preprint

Distributed control agents have been advocated as an effective means for improving the resiliency of our physical in-frastructures under unexpected events. While purely local control has been shown to be insufficient, centralized optimal resource allocation approaches can be slow. In this context, we put forth a hybrid low-communication saturation-driven protocol for the coordination of control agents that are distributed over a physicalsystem and are allowed to communicate with peers over a 'hot-line' communication network. According to this protocol, agents act upon on local readings unless their control resources have been depleted, in which case they send a beacon for assistance to peer agents. Our ripple-type scheme triggers communication locally only for the agents with saturated resources, and is proved to converge. Moreover, under a monotonicity assumption on the underlying physical law coupling control outputs to inputs, the devised control is proved to converge to a configuration satisfying safe operational constraints. The assumption is shown to hold for voltage control in electric power systems and pressure control in water distribution networks. Numerical tests on both networks corroborate the efficacy of the novel scheme.

Ripple-type control of networked physical systems

Techniques for ripple-type control of networked physical systems such as power systems, water systems, and others are provided. As one example, a device includes at least one processor configured to determine, for a first controllable device in a system, based on a measurement of an output parameter and a minimum output parameter value, an output violation value for the first device. The processor is further configured to determine, based on a present input value for the first device, the output violation value, and an assistance requisition value corresponding to a second device, a target input value for the first device. The processor is further configured to cause the first controllable device to modify operation based on the target input value and a maximum input value for the first controllable device.

Ripple-Type Voltage Control for Extreme-Event Contingencies: Preprint

Frequent and intense extreme events make grid operation unprecedentedly challenging. Disruptive events could lead to dangerous voltage drops and even voltage collapse if corrective actions are not quickly taken. In this paper, we present a real-time algorithm for voltage control suitable for mitigating electric grid damage scenarios. In our strategy, when agents (generators, substations) experience a dangerous undervoltage, they first respond locally. When the local control resources are depleted, agents seek assistance from peer nodes over a communication network. The algorithm is simulated on a realistic test transmission system. Using fragility curve methodology, we simulate hurricane damages to the components of the synthetic 2000-bus grid representing the ERCOT system. Although being tested over a damaged grid after a hurricane event, our algorithm can be equally successfully applied to any other emergency low-voltage situation.

Ripples in spacetime from broken supersymmetry

We initiate the study of gravitational wave (GW) signals from first-order phase transitions in supersymmetry-breaking hidden sectors. Such phase transitions often occur along a pseudo-flat direction universally related to supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in hidden sectors that spontaneously break R -symmetry. The potential along this pseudo-flat direction imbues the phase transition with a number of novel properties, including a nucleation temperature well below the scale of heavy states (such that the temperature dependence is captured by the low-temperature expansion) and significant friction induced by the same heavy states as they pass through bubble walls. In low-energy SUSY-breaking hidden sectors, the frequency of the GW signal arising from such a phase transition is guaranteed to lie within the reach of future interferometers given existing cosmological constraints on the gravitino abundance. Once a mediation scheme is specified, the frequency of the GW peak correlates with the superpartner spectrum. Current bounds on supersymmetry are compatible with GW signals at future interferometers, while the observation of a GW signal from a SUSY-breaking hidden sector would imply superpartners within reach of future colliders.
