Redesigned Nylon 6 Variants with Enhanced Recyclability, Ductility, and Transparency

Geminal (gem−) disubstitution in heterocyclic monomers is an effective strategy to enhance polymer chemical recyclability by lowering their ceiling temperatures. However, the effects of specific substitution patterns on the monomer's reactivity and the resulting polymer's properties are largely unexplored. Here we show that, by systematically installing gem-dimethyl groups onto ϵ-caprolactam (monomer of nylon 6) from the α to ϵ positions, both the redesigned lactam monomer's reactivity and the resulting gem-nylon 6’s properties are highly sensitive to the substitution position, with the monomers ranging from non-polymerizable to polymerizable and the gem-nylon properties ranging from inferior to far superior to the parent nylon 6. Remarkably, the nylon 6 with the gem-dimethyls substituted at the γ position is amorphous and optically transparent, with a higher T g (by 30 °C), yield stress (by 1.5 MPa), ductility (by 3×), and lower depolymerization temperature (by 60 °C) than conventional nylon 6.

Robust Synthetic Biology Toolkit to Advance Carboxysome Study and Redesign

Carboxysomes are polyhedral protein organelles that microorganisms use to facilitate carbon dioxide assimilation. They are composed of a modular protein shell that envelops an enzymatic core mainly composed of physically coupled Rubisco and carbonic anhydrase. While the modular construction principles of carboxysomes make them attractive targets as customizable metabolic platforms, their size and complexity can be a hindrance. In this work, we design and validate a plasmid set, the pXpressome toolkit, in which α-carboxysomes are robustly expressed and remain intact and functional after purification. We tested this toolkit by introducing mutations that influence carboxysome structure and performance. We find that deletion of vertex-capping genes results in formation of larger carboxysomes, while deletion of facet forming genes produces smaller particles, suggesting that adjusting the ratio of these proteins can rationally affect morphology. Through a series of fluorescently labeled constructs, we observe that this toolkit leads to more uniform expression and better cell health than previously published carboxysome expression systems. Overall, the pXpressome toolkit facilitates the study and redesign of carboxysomes with robust performance and improved phenotype uniformity. The pXpressome toolkit will support efforts to remodel carboxysomes for enhanced carbon fixation or serve as a platform for other nanoencapsulation goals.

Redesigning protonic ceramic electrochemical cells to lower the operating temperature

Protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) can operate at intermediate temperatures (450° to 600°C) for power generation and hydrogen production. However, the operating temperature is still too high to revolutionize ceramic electrochemical cell technology. Lowering the operating temperature to <450°C will enable a wider material choice and reduce system costs. We present approaches to redesigning PCECs via readily fabricated single-grain–thick, chemically homogeneous, and robust electrolytes and a nano-micro positive electrode. At 450°C, the PCECs achieve a peak power density of 1.6 watt per square centimeter on H 2 fuel, 0.5 watt per square centimeter on NH 3 fuel, and 0.3 watt per square centimeter on CH 4 fuel in fuel cell mode. In steam electrolysis mode, a current density of >0.6 ampere per square centimeter with a Faradaic efficiency of >90% is achievable at 1.4 volt and 400°C. In addition, exceptional durability (>2000 hours) has been demonstrated, with a degradation rate of <0.01 millivolt per 100 hours in fuel cell mode at 400°C.

Redesign of the Timeline Generator at Fermilab using a web-based Flutter application, GraphQL API and an IOC

The control system at Fermilab is undergoing an evolution with a shift towards web-based applications with connections to the EPICS infrastructure. The Timeline Generator (TLG) is an application that serves to coordinate events across the lab using different timing links. These links include the Tevatron clock (TCLK), a 10 MHz serial link with events encoded at 20Hz and Machine Data (MDAT), a communication link with states encoded at 720Hz. This paper covers the redesign of the major components of the TLG. This includes a web-based Flutter application for building timelines. A placement service is in use that has a GraphQL interface and uses a timeline input to compute a schedule of events and states. The Flutter application sends this computed schedule to the TLG IOC via a GraphQL interface to the Data Pool Manager (DPM). The TLG IOC runs on an Arria FPGA, the Accelerator Clock Generator (ACLK-GEN), which is responsible for writing the events and states on to the different timing links.

Characterization of the Redesigned Extended MITL for HERMES III

Modeling and simulation of the legacy HERMES III Magnetically Insulated Transmission Line (MITL) has been performed using EMPHASIS, an unstructured time-domain electromagnetic (UTDEM) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation software. This design when used lost roughly half of its current before the pulse reached the load. The cause of the current loss in the MITL was found to be the vacuum impedance changes along the MITL. The MITL was then redesigned to maintain constant impedance and simulated in EMPHASIS once again. Following predicting simulation results, the new MITL was then built, installed, and tested, showing minimal current loss and good agreement with simulation and theoretical results, all of which are reported here. Additionally, an analysis of experimental voltage calculation techniques using cathode and anode currents is performed and compared to simulation results.

3D Display of Events on a Stack of CCDs and OSCURA MCMs Copper Box Redesign

A 3D event display algorithm was successfully implemented using CERN root to visualize muons, electrons, and photons within the CCD's from the OSCURA testing setup. The copper box from this setup was also redesigned to accommodate up to 21 MCMs, enabling a multi-layer sensor tracker orientation. This setup and algorithm aims to explore and search for millicharged particles (mCPs) in accelerators, leading to improved particle tracking precision and reduced background events.

Redesign of Nuclear Material Storage Container with Additive Manufacturing

The goal of this project is to reduce worker dose and improve criticality safety by improving nuclear material storage containers. The current method of medium to long term (up to 15 years) storage of small amounts of nuclear material is to store it in a stainless-steel flat tube with a copper crush gasket. These containers use 10 bolts to fasten the lid, and the crush gasket must be replaced after every use. Stainless-steel acts as a gamma shield, but there is not any material to account for neutron dose. A redesign of this container should prioritize reducing radiation doses to handlers of the container by reducing the amount of time handlers are exposed to the container and introducing material with effective neutron and gamma shielding mechanics.

Magnetic Mapping of MAGIS-100 Tubes to Guide Experimental Redesign

The MAGIS-100 atom interferometer requires an exceptionally uniform, low-magnetic-field environment along its 100-meter baseline. While characterization of the raw structural tubes established a clean baseline, the original surrounding experimental design proved overly complex, ultimately introducing complications that degraded data precision. To resolve these systemic issues, a comprehensive redesign of the surrounding apparatus is underway. This poster details our magnetometry data collection efforts on the baseline tubes and highlights how these measurements are being used to guide a streamlined external design. By leveraging this background data, the new configuration aims to eliminate the complexities of the initial setup and ensure the environmental stability required for high-precision quantum sensing.

Noise reduction from the redesign of a fan stage to minimize stator lift fluctuations

An existing fan stage, redesigned to reduce stator lift fluctuations, was acoustically tested for reduced noise generation. The lift fluctuations on the stator were reduced by increasing the stator chord, adjusting incidence angles, and by adjusting the rotor velocity diagrams. The experiments showed significantly reduced broadband noise levels in the middle to high frequencies. Blade passage tone power was not reduced, but decreases in the harmonics were observed. Aerodynamic improvements in both performance and efficiency were obtained.
