Time-Dependent Failure Assessment of Ceramic Receivers

The outlet temperature targets for Gen 3 Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems pose a significant challenge to the structural reliability of high temperature metallic components, including those manufactured from nickel-based superalloys. Advanced ceramics present a potential solution due to their excellent high-temperature strength. However, accurate assessment of ceramic components requires an entirely different approach compared to metallic components. This paper describes the implementation of time-dependent reliability analysis of ceramic components in srlife – an open-source software package for estimating the life of high temperature CSP components. This new capability will allow high temperature CSP designers to make fair comparisons between competing metallic and ceramic designs and accurately assess the performance of different ceramic materials for CSP receivers and other components. The current version of the tool is available at https://github.com/Argonne-National-Laboratory/srlife.

Impact of molten salt inflow on the temperature distribution in thermal energy storage tanks at startup for central receiver concentrating solar power plants

Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems with molten salt thermal energy storage (TES) tanks are one of the most promising, renewable-based energy conversion technologies for larger-scale power generation. The TES tank is one of the most critical components in CSP plants due to its high-temperature operation (up to 565 °C), daily thermal cycling, and intermittent solar radiation conditions. The plant startup is one of the most challenging operation conditions that could lead to damaging thermal gradients due to low salt inventory levels. In this study an analytical model for the sparger ring was developed and integrated with a detailed computational fluid dynamics model of a commercial-scaled molten salt tank. The integrated model allows an accurate representation of the tank operation to evaluate the effect of molten salt inflow on the mixing process. The tank filling process during plant startup was analyzed considering sparger rings with variations in design features, including inlet orifice configurations, number of orifices, direction of the inlets, and orifice diameter. The results demonstrated that higher temperature gradients are obtained in the tank floor during the plant startup. A sparger ring configuration with a predetermined orifice inlet inclination (30°, 45° and 60°) leads to significant temperature differences in the floor, between 57 °C and 62 °C, but better homogeneity in the temperature of the salt inventory. Lower salt inflow velocities result in a more homogeneous floor temperature, with maximum temperature differences under 38 °C. The sparger ring configuration with 52 orifices of 1-in. diameter and vertical flow showed better homogeneity in the temperature differences as a function of the salt level and lower temperature gradients in the tank floor. Because large temperature gradients in the tank's floor have been identified as one of the main factors contributing to tank failures, assessing various sparger ring design features is fundamental to determining proper inflow conditions that lead to low-temperature gradients and reducing failure susceptibility.

A consumer-centric approach to quantify efficiency of receiving goods purchased via online

Virtual participation in shopping activities has increased exponentially in the past four years compared to the last couple of decades. E-tailing or online shopping offers the convenience of goods reaching a consumer instead of a consumer traveling to a store, but it has downsides like geographical service variability and negative social externalities such as increased energy consumption and emissions. This study proposes a novel approach to quantify e-tailing efficiency from the consumers’ viewpoint. The methodology is innovative in its integration of accessibility theory with energy and cost impedance factors and consideration of delivering and picking up goods purchased via online. The methodology is implemented for the San Francisco Bay Area and is subject to scenarios that see enhancements to various facets of online shopping delivery. Results demonstrate that increasing the frequency of e-commerce deliveries helps improve e-tailing efficiency in rural locations, while improvements in energy and cost aspects of delivery modes are seen to improve e-tailing efficiencies in the central parts of the region. The approach proposed can provide valuable insights on where people have limited benefits from online shopping and how emerging delivery mechanisms can change the quality of the e-commerce experience within a city. This research offers a replicable framework for assessing e-commerce systems in diverse geographic contexts, contributing to the development of equitable and environmentally sustainable urban freight systems.

Search for Postinflationary QCD Axions with a Quantum-Limited Tunable Microwave Receiver

A search for cosmological axions has been performed by scanning a frequency region of 38 MHz centered at about 10.2 GHz, corresponding to an axion mass 𝑚 𝑎 ≃ 42 μ ⁢eV. The QUAX experimental apparatus, a haloscope comprised of a 1-liter volume tunable cavity immersed in an 8 T magnetic field and a quantum-limited detection chain, set limits on the axion-photon coupling at the 10 −14 GeV −1 level. As no signal candidate has been observed, viable hadronic axion models are ruled out in a currently preferred postinflationary region 𝑚 𝑎 > 40 μ ⁢eV.

Comparison of Nb 3 Sn Insulation Systems With as Received and De-Sized Glass

Epoxy cracking has been the main suspected contributor to training in Nb 3 Sn magnets for some time, as it leads to energy release and magnet quenching. Cracking in a superconducting composite can occur from several modes, and the likelihood of these modes is not well understood. Failure has been observed between insulation systems and the superconducting cable itself rather than within the cable or insulation. To target the behavior at the interface, samples have been fabricated and tested for Mode I fracture toughness in an adapted version of ASTM D5528. This work seeks to better characterize the fracture toughness of this interface to better understand how to model and design insulation systems.

Assessment of the Reversion to Virulence and Protective Efficacy in Pigs Receiving the Live Attenuated Classical Swine Fever Recombinant Vaccine Candidate FlagT4G

Background/Objectives: Control of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) in endemic countries relies on vaccination using live attenuated vaccines (LAVs). Most of these LAVs do not allow for the differentiation of vaccinated animals from infected animals (DIVA) based on their serological response. FlagT4G vaccine is a novel candidate that confers robust protective immunity early after vaccination and shows DIVA capabilities. Methods: This report presents the characterization of FlagT4G virus in terms of the stability of its genomic and attenuated phenotypes assessed by a reversion to virulence protocol, as well as its protective efficacy by determining the minimal protective dose. Results: Results presented here demonstrate that after five consecutive passages in groups of 5-week-old susceptible domestic pigs, FlagT4G virus remains genetically stable, and its attenuated phenotype remains unaltered. In terms of efficacy, FlagT4G virus induced solid protection against the intranasal challenge with 105 tissue culture infectious dose (TCID50) of virulent field isolate Brescia virus, even with a vaccine dose as low as 102 TCID50. Conclusions: Results presented here indicate that the FlagT4G vaccine may be a useful tool for CSFV control.

Addressing Failures in Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage Tank for Central Receiver Concentrating Solar Power Plants

The thermal energy storage (TES) system is a critical component in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants that increases the plant's capacity factor and economic competitiveness by reducing the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) while simultaneously increasing the value of the delivered energy. Failures including molten-salt leaks and diverse localized cracking after several months to a few years of operation have been reported in hot tanks for CSP plants operating around the world. A model of a molten salt thermal energy storage tank was developed and validated to analyze the impact of different tank design features on the temperature and stress distributions as a function of typical plant operation conditions. Design features included the floor plate thicknesses, friction coefficients between the tank floor and the foundation, and the sparger ring location. Maximum stresses in the tank floor frequently surpassed the yield point of the material during operation, leading to a detriment of the tank's lifetime. Recommendations on design features to improve the reliability of new molten salt tanks for CSP plants are provided.

The Compensating Common-Gate Frontend Circuit Used as Current Source Receiver

A very low power frontend circuit using the compensating common-gate scheme is described. It combines features of the regular common-gate topology and the trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) schemes allowing designers to achieve low input impedance and sufficient bandwidth with small power consumption. It can be used as an interface between detectors and the pseudo-thyristors we developed to complete a full frontend signal chain. Simulation shows that in a 65 nm process, it is possible to achieve an input impedance <1K Ohms allowing a charge detection <6fC with 3pF parasitic capacitance, using static power below 20 micro-Watts/channel.
