Photon-odderon interference in exclusive χ c charmonium production at the Electron-Ion Collider

Exclusive C = + 1 scalar, axial-vector, and tensor quarkonium production in high-energy electron-proton scattering requires a C -odd t -channel exchange of a photon or a three-gluon ladder. We derive the expressions for the corresponding amplitudes. The relative phase of the photon vs three-gluon exchange amplitudes is determined by the sign of the light-front matrix element of the eikonal color current operator d a b c J + a J + b J + c at moderate x , and is not affected by small- x QCD evolution. Model calculations predict constructive interference, which is particularly strong for momentum transfer | t | ∼ 1 GeV 2 where the cross section for χ c J production exceeds that for pure photon exchange by up to a factor of 4. Exclusive χ c J electroproduction at the high luminosity Electron-Ion Collider occurs with well measurable rates and measurements of these processes should find evidence for the perturbative odderon exchange. We also compute the total electroproduction cross section as a function of energy and provide first estimates of the number of χ c J events per month at the Electron-Ion Collider design luminosity. Photoproduction of the Σ + hyperon using linearly polarized photons with CLAS

Measurements of the polarization observables Σ, P, T, O x , O z for the reaction $\vec{γ}$ p → $K^0_S$Σ + using a linearly polarized photon beam of energy 1.1 to 2.1 GeV are reported. The measured data provide information on a channel that has not been studied extensively, but is required for a full coupled-channel analysis in the nucleon resonance region. Observables have been simultaneously extracted using likelihood sampling with a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo process. Angular distributions in bins of photon energy E γ are produced for each polarization observable. T, O x , and O z are first time measurements of these observables in this reaction. The extraction of Σ extends the energy range beyond a previous measurement. The measurement of P, the recoil polarization, is consistent with previous measurements. The measured data are shown to be significant enough to affect the estimation of the nucleon resonance parameters when fitted within a coupled-channels model.

Tensor-polarized parton density in the $N → Δ$ transition

The generalized parton distributions for transitions between baryon states with different masses have a forward limit in which they behave as parton densities (light-front momentum transfer Δ + , Δ T = 0, energy transfer Δ - ≠ 0). These "transition parton densities" can realize spin/isospin quantum numbers not accessible in the ground-state nucleon. The N → Δ transition gives rise to a new parton density proportional to the 1/2 → 3/2 spin transition tensor. Its properties are derived, and its magnitude is estimated in the chiral quark-soliton model based on the large-N c limit of QCD.

Partial wave analysis of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝐽/𝜓 and cross section measurement of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 ± ⁢𝑍 𝑐 ⁢(3900) ∓ from 4.1271 to 4.3583 GeV

Based on 12.0 fb −1 of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collision data samples collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.1271 to 4.3583 GeV, a partial wave analysis is performed for the process 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝐽/𝜓. The cross sections for the subprocesses 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑍 𝑐 ⁢(3900) − + c.c. → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝐽/𝜓, 𝑓 0 ⁡(980)⁢(→ 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − )⁢𝐽/𝜓, and (𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ) S−wave⁢ 𝐽/𝜓 are measured for the first time. The mass and width of the 𝑍 𝑐 ⁢(3900) ± are determined to be 3884.6 ± 0.7 ± 3.3 MeV/𝑐 2 and 37.2 ± 1.3 ± 6.6 MeV, respectively. The first errors are statistical and the second systematic. The final state (𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ) S−wave ⁢𝐽/𝜓 dominates the process 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝐽/𝜓. By analyzing the cross sections of 𝜋 ±⁢ 𝑍 𝑐 ⁢(3900) ∓ and 𝑓 0 ⁡(980)⁢𝐽/𝜓, 𝑌⁡(4220) has been observed. Its mass and width are determined to be 4225.7 ± 4.1 ± 3.4 MeV/𝑐 2 and 57.5 ± 9.4 ± 12.1 MeV, respectively.

Search for the 𝑌⁡(2175) in the Photoproduction Cross Section Measurement of 𝛾⁢𝑝 → 𝜙⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 at GlueX

Based on 334 pb −1 of photoproduction data collected with the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab, we have measured for the first time the cross section of the exclusive reaction 𝛾+𝑝→𝜙⁡(1020)⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 by reconstructing the final state 𝐾 +⁢ 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 produced with a photon beam of energies between 8.0 and 11.6 GeV. Based on the measured differential cross section, we have performed a search for the strangeoniumlike exotic candidate 𝑌⁡(2175), recently renamed to 𝜙⁡(2170). This state has been reported by different 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation experiments and it is addressed here for the first time in a photoproduction experiment. We do not find evidence for this state when using the resonance parameters quoted by the Particle Data Group and provide upper limits on the photoproduction cross section. Instead, we find a structure at a mass of 𝑚⁡(𝜙⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ) = 2.24 GeV/𝑐 2 with a statistical significance of about 5⁢𝜎. The parameters of this structure differ from those quoted by the Particle Data Group for the 𝜙⁡(2170) and are consistent with a previous observation in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation. In addition, there is evidence for a second structure at 1.82 GeV/𝑐 2 .

Long-Range Transverse-Momentum Correlations and Radial Flow in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

This Letter presents measurements of long-range transverse-momentum correlations using a new observable, 𝑣 0⁡ (𝑝 T ), serving as a probe of event-by-event radial-flow fluctuations, the underlying radial expansion, and the medium’s properties in heavy-ion collisions. Results are reported for inclusive charged particles, pions, kaons, and protons across various centrality intervals in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV, recorded by the ALICE detector. A pseudorapidity-gap technique, similar to that used in anisotropic-flow studies, is employed to suppress short-range correlations. At low 𝑝 T , a characteristic mass ordering consistent with hydrodynamic collective flow is observed. At higher 𝑝 T (>3 GeV/𝑐), protons exhibit larger 𝑣 0 ⁡(𝑝 T ) than pions and kaons, in agreement with expectations from quark-recombination models. Comparisons to viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying bulk viscosity and equation of state demonstrate the sensitivity of the 𝑣 0 ⁡(𝑝 T ) observable to these key medium properties. The findings establish 𝑣 0 ⁡(𝑝 T ) as a valuable addition to the set of observables used in Bayesian analyses for extracting the transport properties and constraining the equation of state of strongly interacting matter, while also helping to systematically explore its sensitivity and impact within such global studies.

Search for 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 and 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 (4338) 0 in ϒ(1𝑆,2𝑆) Inclusive Decays at Belle

Using data samples of 102 million ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) events and 158 million ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy 𝑒+⁢𝑒− collider, we search for [𝑢⁢𝑑⁢𝑠⁢𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$ ] pentaquark states decaying to 𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ. Using the first observations of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆,2⁢𝑆) inclusive decays to 𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ, we find evidence of the 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 state with a local significance of 3.3 standard deviations, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. We measure the mass and width of the 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 to be (4471.7±4.8±0.6) MeV/𝑐 2 and (22 ±13 ±3) MeV, respectively. The branching fractions for 𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 production are measured to be ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆)→𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459)0/ $\overline{𝑃}$ 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 +anything]=(3.5±2.0±0.2)×10 −6 and ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆)→𝑃 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 /$\overline{𝑃}$ 𝑐$\overline{𝑐}$𝑠 ⁢(4459) 0 +anything]=(2.9±1.7±0.4)×10 −6 . The inclusive branching fractions of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆,2⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ are measured to be ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ +anything] =(36.9 ±5.3 ±2.4) ×10 −6 and ℬ⁡[ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) →𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/$\overline{Λ}$ +anything] =(22.3 ±5.7 ±3.1) ×10 −6 . We measure the visible cross section 𝜎⁡(𝑒+⁢𝑒−→𝐽/𝜓⁢Λ/ $\overline{Λ}$ +anything)=(90±14±6) fb for the continuum production at √𝑠 =10.52 GeV. In all cases, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

High precision measurements of α 𝑠 at the future EIC

Here, we present a projection study for the first moments of the inclusive spin structure function ∫𝑔 1 ⁡(𝑥,𝑄 2 )𝑑𝑥 for the proton and neutron from simulated doubly-polarized $\overrightarrow{e}$ $⁢\overrightarrow{p}$ and $\overrightarrow{e}$ − $\overrightarrow{^{3}He}$ collision data expected from the Electron Ion Collider. For detection and extraction of the neutron spin asymmetries from $\overrightarrow{e}$ − $\overrightarrow{^{3}He}$ collisions, we used the double-tagging method which significantly reduces the uncertainty over the traditional inclusive method. Using the Bjorken Sum Rule, the projected results allow us to determine that the QCD coupling at the 𝑍-pole 𝛼 𝑠 ⁡(𝑀$^2_{Z^0}$) can be measured with a relative precision of 1.3%. This underscores the significance of the EIC for achieving precision determinations of 𝛼 𝑠 .

Observation of New Charmonium or Charmoniumlike States in B + → D * ± D ∓ K + Decays

A study of resonant structures in B + → D * + D − K + and B + → D * − D + K + decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of s = 7 , 8, and 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . A simultaneous amplitude fit is performed to the two channels with contributions from resonances decaying to D * − D + and D * + D − states linked by C parity. This procedure allows the C parities of resonances in the D * ± D ∓ mass spectra to be determined. Four charmonium or charmoniumlike states are observed decaying into D * ± D ∓ : η c ( 3945 ) , h c ( 4000 ) , χ c 1 ( 4010 ) , and h c ( 4300 ) , with quantum numbers J P C equal to 0 − + , 1 + − , 1 + + , and 1 + − , respectively. At least three of these states have not been observed previously. In addition, the existence of the T c ¯ s ¯ 0 * ( 2870 ) 0 and T c ¯ s ¯ 1 * ( 2900 ) 0 resonances in the D − K + mass spectrum, already observed in the B + → D + D − K + decay, is confirmed in a different production channel. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Quadrupole forces between quark and gluon subsystems inside higher-spin particles

We generalize the mechanical interpretation of the forces between quark and gluon subsystems, previously studied for the nucleon, to arbitrary higher-spin particles. For spin-0 and spin-1/2 particles, this force is characterized by the nonconserved $\overline{𝑐}$⁡(𝑡) form factor. However, such an interpretation has not yet been established for higher-spin particles due to the intricate structure of the nonconserved energy-momentum tensor (EMT) form factors. By performing a multipole expansion, we identify the physically meaningful combinations of the nonconserved covariant EMT form factors and provide them with a clear mechanical interpretation.

Phenomenology of soft hadron interactions and the relevant EAS data

The interpretation of the experimental data in superhigh energy cosmic rays requires the calculations using various models of elementary hadron interaction. One should prefer the models justified by accelerator data and giving definite predictions for superhigh energies. The model of quark-gluon pomeron strings (the QGPS models) satisfies this requirement.

Anomalies in cosmic rays: New particles versus charm?

For a long time two anomalies are observed in cosmic rays at energies E approx. = 100 TeV: (1) the generation of long-flying cascades in the hadron calorimeter (the so-called Tien-Shan effect) and; (2) the enhancement of direct muon yield as compared with the accelerator energy region. The aim is to discuss the possibility that both anomalies have common origins arising from production and decays of the same particles. the main conclusions are the following: (1) direct muons cannot be generated by any new particles with mass exceeding 10+20 GeV; and (2) if both effects are originated from the charmed hadrons, then the needed charm hadroproduction cross section is unexpectedly large as compared with the quark-gluon model predictions.

Gamma rays and energetic particles from primordial black holes

The standard model of quarks and leptons is used to discuss the signatures of black-hole evaporations. A firm bound on the primordial black hole abundance is obtained from MeV data. It is argued that the MeV bound can be improved by exploiting the new generation of TeV and PeV telescopes.

Measurement of the Neutron Electromagnetic Form Factor Ratio at High Momentum Transfer

The inner structure of the nucleon (proton and neutron) remains a topic of great interest in nuclear and particle physics, after many decades of study. For example, understanding the quark-gluon dynamics inside the nucleon would shed light on how 99% of the nucleon mass is created. The neutron electromagnetic form factors, Gn E and Gn M , give important insights into the neutron structure. The Super BigBite Spectrometer (SBS) program at Jefferson Lab (JLab) seeks to extend the form factor measurements for both the proton and the neutron. The neutron electric form actor, Gn E , has been historically difficult to measure due to the short lifetime of the free neutron and the small value of Gn E . The GEn-II experiment is part of the SBS program and seeks to measure Gn E , significantly increasing the high momentum transfer coverage. A newly designed polarized 3He target increased the figure of merit by three times compared to previous measurements. The analysis of this data is especially challenging due to the unprecedented high-rate environment caused by the open nature of the spectrometer with a direct line of sight to the target. This required developing new Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) particle trackers which can cover large areas demanded by this setup and handle particle rates up to 500 kHz/cm2. Rates this high over a large area is unprecedented in particle tracking systems and came with a number of challenges. Data taken in the SBS program was critical to understanding hardware and software solutions that improved the track reconstruction efficiency to be >97% with a position resolution of 70 ?m. In previous experiments the proton electromagnetic form factors, Gp E and Gp M were measured up to Q2 = 8.5 GeV2 and Q2 = 30 GeV2, respectively, while Gn E has only been measured up to Q2 = 3.4 GeV2. The GEn-II experiment has measured the neutron form factor ratio, Gn E/Gn M, at Q2 values of 2.90, 6.50, and 9.47 GeV2 by scattering a polarized electron beam with a polarized 3He target, used here as an effective polarized neutron target, and measuring the double spin asymmetry of the cross section. Previous Gn E measurements do not extend above Q2 = 3.4 GeV2, and therefore this analysis has extended the world data by almost three times. The background correction is especially difficult at the higher Q2 settings leading to large systematic errors. As very exploratory results from this early analysis of the data, we find for Q2 = 2.90 GeV2, Gn E = 0.0157 ±stat 0.0016 ±sys 0.0011, for Q2 = 6.50 GeV2, Gn E = 0.0067 ±stat 0.0019 ±sys 0.0005, and for Q2 = 9.46 GeV2, Gn E = 0.0046 ±stat 0.0023 ±sys 0.0005. These results are compared to predictions from the Dyson-Schwinger Equations (DSE) model and a Relativistic Constituent Quark Model (RCQM).

Hidden-strangeness tetraquarks in the dynamical diquark model

The dynamical diquark model describes multiquark exotic hadrons in terms of diquark components nucleated by heavy quarks and successfully explains multiple features of hidden-charm and hidden-bottom exotics. Here, we apply the model to the marginally heavy case of hidden-strange states to probe whether mesons near 2 GeV with peculiar properties, such as 𝜙⁡(2170), 𝑓 2 ⁡(2340), and 𝑋⁡(2370), are possible tetraquark candidates. We calculate spin-multiplet average masses using potentials obtained through lattice simulations and quark models, and we also describe the detailed spectra of the expected multiplets as a diagnostic to discern the nature of future hadrons likely to be discovered in this mass region by experiments at facilities such as BESIII, JLab, and the EIC.

A potential model study of the nucleon's charge and mass radius

We study the charge and mass distributions within a nucleon and compute the associated squared radii based on a potential model approach. Different constituent quark configurations such as Δ, Y, and quark-diquark are considered and compared, with model parameters calibrated by experimental measurements of the proton and neutron charge radius. The results suggest that while the charge radius is dictated by quark dynamics, the mass radius is strongly influenced by nonperturbative QCD contributions to a nucleon's mass that are not sensitive to the constituent quarks. As a result, the mass radius could become substantially different from the charge radius. The obtained nucleon mass distributions of different configurations are further used for simulations of the initial conditions in heavy ion collisions. Furthermore, the computed eccentricities ε 2 and ε 3 are found to demonstrate a considerable sensitivity to the input nucleon profiles, especially to the mass radius in the peripheral region as well as for systems with fewer participants.

Multi-top signals of vectorlike quarks at the LHC

We point out that events with 6 or more top quarks may be observed at the LHC if certain particles exist at the TeV scale. In a model where a vectorlike quark of charge 2/3 decays into a top quark and a pseudoscalar particle, which subsequently decays into a top-antitop pair, the LHC production cross section for events with 6 top quarks may be above 10 fb. If the pseudoscalar is part of a complex scalar field, then longer cascade decays, involving the scalar partner, may lead to events with 8 or even 10 top quarks. We show that for a region of parameter space the dominant LHC signal in this model is 8 top quarks (i.e., four $t\bar{t}$ pairs). The ensuing signals would be spectacular, including many leptons and b jets. A discovery in that case would allow several cross section measurements that may determine the masses of all three new particles.

Combination of searches for singly produced vectorlike top quarks in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A combination of searches for the single production of vectorlike top quarks (𝑇) is presented. These analyses are based on proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV recorded in 2015–2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb −1 . The 𝑇 decay modes considered in this combination are into a top quark and either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a 𝑍 boson (𝑇 → 𝐻⁡𝑡 and 𝑇 → 𝑍⁢𝑡). The individual searches used in the combination are differentiated by the number of leptons (𝑒, 𝜇) in the final state. The observed data are found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model background prediction. Interpretations are provided for a range of masses and couplings of the vectorlike top quark for benchmark models and generalized representations in terms of 95% confidence level limits. For a benchmark signal prediction of a vectorlike top quark SU(2) singlet with electroweak coupling, 𝜅, of 0.5, masses below 2.1 TeV are excluded, resulting in the most restrictive limits to date.
