Furthering Advancements to Shorten the Time (FAST) to Commissioning for Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) Prize (CRADA Final Report)

NREL initiated a prize with support from Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office (DOE WPTO) to encourage ideas to reduce the time to commissioning for PSH projects. As a result, Southwest Research Institute (SWRI) was chosen as one of nine finalists to develop their concept in advance of the FAST Prize Pitch Contest held on October 27, 2021. The National Labs provided technical and business advisement to SWRI in preparation for this Pitch Contest.

Barriers and Opportunities for U.S. Hydropower Industry Engagement in Brazil and Argentina

This Barriers and Opportunities for U.S. Hydropower Industry Engagement in Brazil and Argentina project seeks to enhance the understanding of hydropower resources, existing installations, and opportunities for U.S. company involvement in hydropower development in Brazil and Argentina. It covers conventional hydropower, pumped storage hydropower, run-of-river-hydropower, in-conduit generation, hydropower upgrades to existing facilities, and similar systems. This work recognizes that each of these countries, and even regions within the countries, have varied topography, weather, existing grid infrastructure, social, economic, and other factors, leading to relatively unique opportunities and challenges for hydropower development.

Charting Hydropower's Role in the Next-Generation Grid

To build a 100% clean energy power sector, the United States is adding more energy storage and variable renewable energy sources, like solar power and wind energy, to the grid. Hydropower and pumped storage hydropower (PSH) can help with both. These technologies already play a key role in providing flexible, low-carbon electricity to the U.S. power grid, and this role will become even more valuable as that grid evolves. That's why researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are analyzing how the U.S. electricity sector could invest in hydropower and PSH using new data and modeling capabilities.
