Evolution of global and local deformation in additively manufactured octet truss lattice structures

Additively manufactured lattice truss structures, often referred to as architected cellular materials, present significant advantages over conventional structures due to their unique characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratios and surface area-to-volume ratios. These geometrically complex structures, however, come with concomitant challenges for qualification and inspection. In this study, compression testing interrupted with micro-computed tomography inspection was conducted to monitor the evolution of global and local deformation throughout the loading process of 304L stainless steel octet truss lattice structures. Both two- and three-dimensional image analysis techniques were leveraged to characterize geometric heterogeneities resulting from the laser powder bed fusion manufacturing process as well as track the structure throughout deformation. Variations from model-predicted behavior resulting from these heterogeneities are considered relative to the predicted and actual responses of the structures during compression to better understand, model, and predict the octet truss lattice structure compression response.

Effects of Fe atoms on hardening of a nickel matrix: Nanoindentation experiments and atom-scale numerical modeling

Significant hardening effect due to Fe concentrations in Ni-based alloys with face-centered-cubic structure has been studied by using a combined experimental and atomistic-based computational approach via nanoindentation tests. The obtained experimental load–displacement data for the [0 0 1] crystal orientation reached a qualitative good agreement with molecular dynamics simulations results, leading to strong evidence that the main strengthening factors are associated to sluggish dislocation diffusion, reduced defect sizes and the nucleation of tetrahedral stacking faults. Here, interstitial type prismatic dislocation loops mainly formed by $\frac{1}{6}$$\langle$1 1 2$\rangle$ Shockley dislocations are nucleated during the loading process, where their interaction leads to the formation of pyramidal shaped stacking fault which are mainly created by $\frac{1}{3}$$\langle$1 0 0$\rangle$ Hirth dislocations lines. Observing both types of defects coexisting in the same plastic deformation zone by both approaches. Reported mechanical data, measured experimentally and interpreted numerically, are also in accordance with microstructural SEM and TEM investigations.

Iodine Capture with Copper-Electroplated Nickel Foams

This work explores the use of Ni0 foam scaffolds for Cu0 coatings for use as sorbents for iodine. The Cu0 electroplating was performed from aqueous copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4) solutions under different conditions to achieve a range of Cu0-layer thicknesses (4.89 ± 1.05 μm–57.32 ± 3.95 μm) with 900 A·m–2 current densities and coating times of 15–180 min. The thickest coatings resulted in Cu0-plated Ni0 foams with >89 mass % Cu0 in the final product. Iodine capture experiments showed very high Cu0 utilizations of 91.9–97.3 mass % at iodine loadings of 839–1774 mg·g–1 through the formation of CuI (marshite; space group F-43m). No evidence was found of iodine reactions taking place with the Ni0 scaffold, so it remained in iodine-loaded Cu-electroplated Ni foams as structural support to provide mechanical rigidity to the foams during the iodine loading process. Hot pressing of these materials can be used to create a CuI/Ni ceramic-metal composite waste form for disposal as demonstrated with spark plasma sintering.

A novel two-layer-integrated microfluidic device for high-throughput yeast proteomic dynamics analysis at the single-cell level

Abstract Current microfluidic methods for studying multicell strains (e.g., m-types) with multienvironments (e.g., n-types) require large numbers of inlets/outlets (m*n), a complicated procedure or expensive machinery. Here, we developed a novel two-layer-integrated method to combine different PDMS microchannel layers with different functions into one chip by a PDMS through-hole array, which improved the design of a PDMS-based microfluidic system. Using this method, we succeeded in converting 2 × m × n inlets/outlets into m + n inlets/outlets and reduced the time cost of loading processing (from m × n to m) of the device for studying multicell strains (e.g., m-types) in varied multitemporal environments (i.e., n-types). Using this device, the dynamic behavior of the cell-stress-response proteins was studied when the glucose concentration decreased from 2% to a series of lower concentrations. Our device could also be widely used in high-throughput studies of various stress responses, and the new concept of a multilayer-integrated fabrication method could greatly improve the design of PDMS-based microfluidic systems.

OpenSAMPL: An Open Source Library for Timing and Synchronization Measurements and Analytics

Today's power grid operators are implementing timing and synchronization solutions that provide resilience to Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) vulnerabilities. These vendor-specific solutions often come with additional software applications that are designed to monitor that vendor's synchronization performance data. However, resilient timing architectures often resulting in multi-vendor solutions, including approaches that blend terrestrial clocks with space-based subscription services. In such an environment, collecting, analyzing, and visualizing data from a variety of sources within a single platform was heretofore not possible. To address this need, the US Department of Energy's Center for Alternative Synchronization and Timing (CAST) developed OpenSAMPL, the Open Synchronized Analytics and Monitoring Platform, an open-source Python framework for processing, loading, and observing clock measurement data from distributed devices. OpenSAMPL enables the ingestion of diverse clock-probe sources into a scalable time-series database and applies robust analytics. OpenSAMPL currently supports two vendor data pipelines, and will be extended to more in the near future, enabling seamless monitoring of a variety of timing and synchronization devices in a common environment.

Assembly and Pre-Loading Specifications for the Series Production of the Nb 3 Sn MQXFA Quadrupole Magnets for the HL-LHC

We report the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) Project is planning to install 16 cold-masses made with Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnets in the LHC Interaction Regions to significantly increase its luminosity. Half of these cold masses are fabricated at BNL, FNAL, and LBNL under the US Accelerator Research Program (AUP). Each cold mass includes two identical Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnets, called MQXFA with a magnetic length of 4.2 m. Currently, the AUP project has completed the fabrication and test of the first 5 pre-series magnets, and is working on the following 16 magnets for the series production. The brittleness and strain sensitivity of the Nb 3 Sn superconducting material requires a careful definition of the allowable maximum stress in the windings during magnet assembly and pre-load, and a tight control of their variation within the whole coil length. Therefore, a series of assembly and pre-load specifications have been defined with the goals of minimizing the risk of conductor degradation and providing the mechanical support required to reach the nominal current during powering. In this paper we present the specifications defined for the MQXFA magnets and applied during the different assembly phases and during the pre-load process of the first 5 pre-series magnets.

An Approach to Data Management Planning for Protected Data Projects

This report describes what is required in a data management plan for data that needs to be protected in some fashion. Here we provide an overview of what a data manager should consider, including the data ingestion and various extract-transform-load processes, metadata considerations and documentation, to what might need to be accounted for in the event of data loss. In addition, this report includes two appendices: forms that, when filled out, make the user compliant with DOE data management requirements as well as additional requirements for handling protected data at ORNL.

An investigation for the development of an integrated optical data preprocessor

The successful fabrication and demonstration of an integrated optical circuit designed to perform a parallel processing operation by utilizing holographic subtraction to simultaneously compare N analog signal voltages with N predetermined reference voltages is summarized. The device alleviates transmission, storage and processing loads of satellite data systems by performing, at the sensor site, some preprocessing of data taken by remote sensors. Major accomplishments in the fabrication of integrated optics components include: (1) fabrication of the first LiNbO3 waveguide geodesic lens; (2) development of techniques for polishing TIR mirrors on LiNbO3 waveguides; (3) fabrication of high efficiency metal-over-photoresist gratings for waveguide beam splitters; (4) demonstration of high S/N holographic subtraction using waveguide holograms; and (5) development of alignment techniques for fabrication of integrated optics circuits. Important developments made in integrated optics are the discovery and suggested use of holographic self-subtraction in LiNbO3, development of a mathematical description of the operating modes of the preprocessor, and the development of theories for diffraction efficiency and beam quality of two dimensional beam defined gratings.

Strength distributions of SiC ceramics after oxidation and oxidation under load

The room-temperature strength distributions of a sintered and a hot-pressed SiC were examined as-machined, after oxidation at 1370 C, and after oxidation under load at 1370 C. The strengths were observed to be dependent on both the duration of oxidation and the magnitude of the applied load. Processes resulting in both strengthening and weakening behavior were observed to occur, at times simultaneously within the same strength distribution. This dynamic situation indicates that the strength-controlling flaw populations are highly transient in nature.

Mass-loading and the formation of the Venus tail

Despite its lack of intrinsic magnetic field Venus has a well defined magnetotail, containing about 3 megawebers of magnetic flux in a tail about 4 Venus radii across with perhaps a slightly elliptical cross section. This tail arises through the mass-loading of magnetic flux tubes passing by the planet. Mass-loading can occur due to charge exchange and photoionization as well as from the diffusion of magnetic field into the ionosphere. Various evidence exists for the mass-loading process, including the direct observation of the picked up ions with both the Venera and Pioneer Venus plasma analyzers.

Empirical modeling of Single-Event Upset (SEU) in NMOS depletion-mode-load static RAM (SRAM) chips

A detailed experimental investigation of single-event upset (SEU) in static RAM (SRAM) chips fabricated using a family of high-performance NMOS (HMOS) depletion-mode-load process technologies, has been done. Empirical SEU models have been developed with the aid of heavy-ion data obtained with a three-stage tandem van de Graaff accelerator. The results of this work demonstrate a method by which SEU may be empirically modeled in NMOS integrated circuits.

Modeling surface deformations at complex strike-slip plate boundaries

Two new versions of the physical base-traction model of Li and Rice (1987) have been developed to study the loading processes and surface deformation near plate boundaries with geometric complexities, including a shallow creeping fault segment and two subparallel faults. Predictions of surface velocity and surface slip rate for the region between the San Andreas fault and the Pacific coast at the latitude of the Parkfield-Cholame segment using model parameters based on geologic, geodetic, and seismic considerations were found to be in good agreement with contemporary geodetic field data (not used in constrainning model parameters). Also, predicted surface velocity for the Salton Sea-Coachella Valley area were fit to recently derived contemporary geodetic data and very large baseline interferometry data, althoug here the model parameters are not well constrained.

Transient flux tubes in the terrestrial magnetosphere

Small, isolated density depletions are postulated to be introduced into the magnetotail by an uneven plasma loading process in the far tail. Such bubbles would be displaced earthward by an interchange process, and a significant depletion would move faster than either the gradient-curvature drift speed or the average convection speed. The dissolution of a bubble into the background results in a local reduction in plasma density, thereby violating ideal MHD and the subsequent conservation of plasma content. If a sufficient amount of magnetic flux in the far tail is contained in bubbles, then the net effect may be a reduction of plasma pressure in the near tail sufficient to resolve the pressure balance inconsistency.

Tracking algorithms using log-polar mapped image coordinates

The use of log-polar image sampling coordinates rather than conventional Cartesian coordinates offers a number of advantages for visual tracking and docking of space vehicles. Pixel count is reduced without decreasing the field of view, with commensurate reduction in peripheral resolution. Smaller memory requirements and reduced processing loads are the benefits in working environments where bulk and energy are at a premium. Rotational and zoom symmetries of log-polar coordinates accommodate range and orientation extremes without computational penalties. Separation of radial and rotational coordinates reduces the complexity of several target centering algorithms, described below.

Reliability of degrading dynamic systems subject to dynamic random loads

Reliability was determined for two degrading dynamic systems subject to random load processes. Damage is caused by loss of components for Daniels systems and crack extension for plates with cracks. The analysis accounted for the coupling between response and current damage state of the system. It is based on mean crossing rates of conditional processes and properties of diffusion models. Simple systems are used to illustrate proposed methods for estimating reliability.
