Blade Designs For Improved Multi-Phase Performance In sCO 2 Compressors; Part II - Optical Diagnostics In sCO 2 And Experimental Evaluation With Particle Image Velocimetry

This paper presents the second part of a study in which the leading-edge and suction surface of a compressor blade was modified to delay onset of phase change for sCO 2 compressors operating near the critical point. Using a first-of-its-kind apparatus for the measurement of sCO 2 flow fields, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is used for local flow field measurements of two compressor blade geometries: the modified “biased-wedge,” and a conventional constant thickness blade. Utilizing the developed hardware, the feasibility of a simple, laser-based diagnostic for qualitatively measuring liquid phase regions, is also presented. The design of the optical diagnostics rig, a discussion of numerous challenges, and necessary considerations involved in performing optical-based measurements like PIV, in sCO 2 , are discussed. Velocity field measurements for the modified compressor profile show a much lower suction peak compared to a conventional blade. Furthermore, these results validate numerical results at the tested conditions, where the suction side profile of the biased wedge works to minimize the local pressure gradient.

Flow friction in a wide rectangular duct with a beveled inlet: Informal Notes of Fundamental Fluid Physics Studies

Fundamental streamwise pressure distributions were measured at Idaho State University to address a primary objective of obtaining insight into the apparent evolution of air flow regimes at moderate Reynolds numbers in thin, wide rectangular ducts with converging inlets. Ducts of 3.030 and 4.077 mm spacings s (called three and four mm), having non-dimensional lengths of (L/s) ≈ 500.8 and 372.2 and widths (W/s) ≈ 114.6 and 83.2, respectively, were compared. Flow rates ranged from Reynolds numbers based on hydraulic diameter (Re Dh ) of about 980 to 10,000 and corresponding non-dimensional downstream pressure gradient parameters (-K p ) covered the range 0.038 to 0.0061, respectively.

Dusty Gas Model for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Fuel Electrode

This model applies the Dusty Gas Model simulate multi-component species transport in SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) anodes which considers the pressure gradient across the fuel electrode. This studyhas been verified with the analytical solution for different fuel electrode thicknesses and with literature values. The model was developed using the VoronoiFVM platform in Julia which is a built in implicit and semi implicit solver that integrates electrochemical behavior, microstructural effects, and transient analysis for accurate prediction of species transport under varying conditions.

Emergence of a nocturnal low-level jet from a broad baroclinic zone

An analytical model is presented for the generation of a Blackadar-like nocturnal low-level jet in a broad baroclinic zone. The flow is forced from below (flat ground) by a surface buoyancy gradient and from above (free atmosphere) by a constant pressure gradient force. Diurnally-varying mixing coefficients are specified to increase abruptly at sunrise and decrease abruptly at sunset. With attention restricted to a surface buoyancy that varies linearly with a horizontal coordinate, the Boussinesq-approximated equations of motion, thermal energy, and mass conservation reduce to a system of one-dimensional equations that can be solved analytically. Sensitivity tests with southerly jets suggest that (i) stronger jets are associated with larger decreases of the eddy viscosity at sunset (as in Blackadar theory), (ii) the nighttime surface buoyancy gradient has little impact on jet strength, and (iii) for pure baroclinic forcing (no free-atmosphere geostrophic wind), the nighttime eddy diffusivity has little impact on jet strength, but the daytime eddy diffusivity is very important and has a larger impact than the daytime eddy viscosity. The model was applied to a jet that developed in fair weather conditions over the Great Plains from southern Texas to northern South Dakota on 1 May 2020. The ECMWF Reanalysis v5 (ERA5) for the afternoon prior to jet formation showed that a broad north-south-oriented baroclinic zone covered much of the region. The peak model-predicted winds were in good agreement with ERA5 winds and lidar data from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) central facility in north-central Oklahoma.

Mixing Cell Model: A One-Dimensional Numerical Model for Assessment of Water Flow and Contaminant Transport in the Unsaturated Zone

This report describes the Mixing Cell Model code, a one dimensional model for water flow and solute transport in the unsaturated zone under steady state or transient flow conditions. The model is based on the principles and assumptions underlying mixing-cell model formulations. The unsaturated zone is discretized into a series of independent mixing cells. Each cell may have unique hydrologic, lithologic, and sorptive properties. Ordinary differential equations describe the material (water and solute) balance within each cell. Water-flow equations are derived from the continuity equation, assuming that unit gradient conditions exist at all times in each cell. Pressure gradients are considered implicitly through model discretization. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and moisture contents are determined by the material specific moisture-characteristic curves. Solute-transport processes include explicit treatment of advective processes, first order chain decay, and linear sorption reactions. Dispersion is addressed through implicit and explicit dispersion. Implicit dispersion is an inherent feature of all mixing-cell models and originates from the formulation of the problem in terms of mass balance around fully mixed volume elements. Expressions are provided that relate implicit dispersion to the physical dispersion of the system. Two FORTRAN codes were developed to solve the water flow and solute-transport equations: (1) the Mixing Cell Model for Flow (MCMF) solves transient water-flow problems and (2) the Mixing Cell Model for Transport (MCMT) solves the solute-transport problem. The transient water-flow problem is typically solved first by estimating the water flux through each cell in the model domain as a function of time using the MCMF code. These data are stored in either ASCII or binary files that are later read by the solute transport code (MCMT). Code output includes solute pore water concentrations, water and solute inventories in each cell and at each specified output time, and water and solute fluxes through each cell and specified output time. Computer run times for coupled transient water flow and solute transport were typically several seconds on a 2 GHz Intel Pentium IV desktop computer. The model was benchmarked against analytical solutions and finite element approximations to the partial differential equations (PDE) describing unsaturated flow and transport. Differences between the maximum solute flux estimated by the mixing cell model and the PDE models were typically less than two percent. This revision includes an option for a fixed concentration lower boundary condition for diffusive fluxes for versions 020321 and later.
