Revisiting Power Systems Time-Domain Simulation Methods and Models

The changing nature of power systems dynamics is challenging present practices related to modeling and study of system-level dynamic behavior. While developing new techniques and models to handle the new modeling requirements, it is also critical to review some of the terminology used to describe existing simulation approaches and the embedded assumptions. This article provides a first-principles review of the simplifications and transformations commonly used in the formulation of time-domain simulation models. It introduces a taxonomy and classification of time-domain simulation models depending on their frequency bandwidth, network representation, and software availability. Furthermore, it focuses on the fundamental aspects of averaging techniques, and model reduction approaches that result in modeling choices, and discusses the associated challenges and opportunities of applying these methods in systems with large shares of Inverter Based Resources (IBRs). The article concludes with an illustrative simulation that compares the trajectories of an IBR-dominated system.

Development and Use of the SPACE Computer Code for Analyzing the Space Station Electrical Power System

This special publication tells the story of the dedicated efforts of very talented individuals to create a preeminent space electrical power system modeling and simulation tool called SPACE, short for System Power Analysis for Capability Evaluation. This computer model has evolved for 30 years, withstanding the test of time and obsolescence, and garnering international recognition for its ability to simulate complex space electrical power systems. The analytical results from this model have saved millions of dollars in hardware redesign, testing, and verification for NASA's International Space Station (ISS) and its European and Russian partners. SPACE has played a pivotal role in the station's design and development and continues to support its ongoing operation. It has also extended its reach beyond the ISS to other key NASA programs, where it guides the design and planned operation of NASA's Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle Orion and simulates electric power system operation in a dusty atmosphere on Mars' surface. The SPACE lineage was created by a core civil servant staff, supplemented by a cadre of interns and other temporary helpers. They created a tightly integrated tool that includes all phenomena that impact a solar array and battery space power system performance. SPACE is self-contained, requiring no other software modules and associated license fees. SPACE "rings true" in that is has been extensively validated with ISS on-orbit telemetry data. This report is being released as the generation of engineers who created it are nearing retirement, passing the baton to a new generation. This next generation will carry the code into the future, no doubt further evolving it to be able to assure mission planners that newly conceived systems will successfully power NASA's next endeavors. As a previous SPACE code developer and analyst, I have worked alongside many of the people mentioned in this report. The engineers who created the code, along with those just now learning it, are among the best and brightest at NASA. It is an honor to write this foreword as the present Branch Chief under which the legacy of SPACE continues to thrive.

Adaptive Modeling of the International Space Station Electrical Power System

Software simulations provide NASA engineers the ability to experiment with spacecraft systems in a computer-imitated environment. Engineers currently develop software models that encapsulate spacecraft system behavior. These models can be inaccurate due to invalid assumptions, erroneous operation, or system evolution. Increasing accuracy requires manual calibration and domain-specific knowledge. This thesis presents a method for automatically learning system models without any assumptions regarding system behavior. Data stream mining techniques are applied to learn models for critical portions of the International Space Station (ISS) Electrical Power System (EPS). We also explore a knowledge fusion approach that uses traditional engineered EPS models to supplement the learned models. We observed that these engineered EPS models provide useful background knowledge to reduce predictive error spikes when confronted with making predictions in situations that are quite different from the training scenarios used when learning the model. Evaluations using ISS sensor data and existing EPS models demonstrate the success of the adaptive approach. Our experimental results show that adaptive modeling provides reductions in model error anywhere from 80% to 96% over these existing models. Final discussions include impending use of adaptive modeling technology for ISS mission operations and the need for adaptive modeling in future NASA lunar and Martian exploration.

Co-Simulation of Electric Power Distribution Systems and Buildings including Ultra-Fast HVAC Models and Optimal DER Control

Smart homes and virtual power plant (VPP) controls are growing fields of research with potential for improved electric power grid operation. A novel testbed for the co-simulation of electric power distribution systems and distributed energy resources (DERs) is employed to evaluate VPP scenarios and propose an optimization procedure. DERs of specific interest include behind-the-meter (BTM) solar photovoltaic (PV) systems as well as heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The simulation of HVAC systems is enabled by a machine learning procedure that produces ultra-fast models for electric power and indoor temperature of associated buildings that are up to 133 times faster than typical white-box implementations. Hundreds of these models, each with different properties, are randomly populated into a modified IEEE 123-bus test system to represent a typical U.S. community. Advanced VPP controls are developed based on the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) 2045 standard to leverage HVAC systems as generalized energy storage (GES) such that BTM solar PV is better utilized locally and occurrences of distribution system power peaks are reduced, while also maintaining occupant thermal comfort. An optimization is performed to determine the best control settings for targeted peak power and total daily energy increase minimization with example peak load reductions of 25+%.

Demonstrating the Transient System Impact of Cyber-Physical Events Through Scalable Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Co-Simulation

Modern power systems become more vulnerable to cyber threats due to their growing interconnectivity, interdependence, and complexity. Widespread deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) further expands the threat landscape to the grid edge, where fewer cybersecurity protections exist. In this article, a systematic cyber-physical events demonstration, enabled by an integrated transmission, distribution, and communication co-simulation framework, is performed. It analyzes cyber risks to power grid under DER-enabled automatic generation control from different angles. Unlike existing works, the simulation captures millisecond-to-minutes frequency and voltage transient dynamics at a cross-region system scale.

Performance and economic risk evaluation of dispersed solar thermal power systems by Monte Carlo simulation

A preliminary comparative evaluation of dispersed solar thermal power plants utilizing advanced technologies available in 1985-2000 time frame is under way at JPL. The solar power plants of 50 KWe to 10 MWe size are equipped with two axis tracking parabolic dish concentrator systems operating at temperatures in excess of 1000 F. The energy conversion schemes under consideration include advanced steam, open and closed cycle gas turbines, stirling, and combined cycle. The energy storage systems include advanced batteries, liquid metal, and chemical. This paper outlines a simple methodology for a probabilistic assessment of such systems. Sources of uncertainty in the development of advanced systems are identified, and a computer Monte Carlo simulation is exercised to permit an analysis of the tradeoffs of the risk of failure versus the potential for large gains. Frequency distribution of energy cost for several alternatives are presented.

Electrical Power System Sizing Within the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation

Electrified aircraft propulsion seeks to address ambitious goals in the commercial airline industry, including significant decreases in fuel burn, emissions, noise, and takeoff field length. In order to move these electrified propulsion concepts forward, analysis tools are needed that can model propulsion systems containing both gas turbine and power system components. This work presents the definition of an electric port, a set of electrical power systems tools, and simulation examples for the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS) software. NPSS is the industry standard modeling and simulation package for aircraft propulsion systems, and the ability to design, size, integrate, and analyze electric power systems will enable industry efforts towards the development of electrified aircraft propulsion.

Assessing the Feasibility of Bordered Block Diagonal Reordering in Power System Matrices using Fully Convolutional Network

In electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations for power systems and inverter-based resources (IBRs), the arrangement of states within the system's linear equations, represented by matrix A in Ax=b, is critical. The state ordering in matrix A can highlight distinct characteristics of the system's graph, and identifying an optimal state ordering is crucial for efficient computation. The choice of state ordering, however, is dependent on the solver used, as each solver may perform optimally with different matrix patterns. With a wide array of matrix reordering algorithms available, selecting the most suitable one becomes challenging without insights into the matrix's ideal configuration. To address this, the paper proposes a fully convolutional network (FCN) to evaluate the reordering potential of the A matrix into a bordered block diagonal (BBD) pattern, which is commonly observed in power system and IBR modeling. The FCN's assessment aims to streamline the solver's operation, which in turn could substantially reduce the computational time required to find a solution.
