Determination of physical and chemical states of lubricants in concentrated contacts, part 1

A Fourier emission infrared microspectrometer, set up on a vibration-proof optical table and interfaced to a dedicated minicomputer, was used to record infrared emission spectra from elastohydrodynamic bearing contacts. Its range was extended to cover the entire mid-infrared from 2 to 15 micron. A series of experiments with 5P4E polyphenyl ether showed the existence of a temperature gradient through the lubricant in an ehd contact, which is perpendicular to the flow direction. The experiments also show marked polarization of some of the spectral bands, indicating a molecular alignment. Alignment is less evident at high pressure than at low pressure. To account for this behavior, a model is suggested along the lines developed for the conformational changes observed in long-chain polymers when subjected to increased pressure--to accommodate closer packing, molecules become kinked and curl up. Experiments with a traction fluid showed periodic changes of flow pattern associated with certain spectral changes. These observations will be studied further. A study by infrared attenuated total reflection spectrophotometry was undertaken to determine whether gamma irradiation would change polyethylene wear specimens. The results were negative.

Deformation-Induced Anisotropy of Polymers

New theory calculates anisotropies induced by large deformations in polymers. Theory was developed primarily for calculating anistropy of thermal expansivity, but is also applicable to thermal conductivity, elastic moduli and other properties. Theory assumes that in isotropic state, long polymer chains are randomly coiled and not oriented in particular direction. They acquire an orientation when material is deformed. As average molecular orientation increases with deformation, properties of bulk material exhibit averaging of the microscopic anistropies of the oriented molecular segments.

Improved adhesion of Ni films on X-ray damaged polytetrafluoroethylene

The considered investigation shows that the adhesion of evaporated Ni on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is enhanced by irradiating the PTFE surface prior to evaporation. Evidence obtained with the aid of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is presented concerning the association of the enhanced adhesion with an interfacial chemical reaction. Evaporated Ni clearly adheres better to the X-ray damaged PTFE surface than to the undamaged surface. There is evidence that the improved adhesion is not related to the Ni-C bond, but rather to the NiF2. A possible mechanism which may be consistent with the data is the formation of a F-Ni-C complex, where C is a member of the polymer chain.

Radiation effects on four polysulfone films

The response of polysulfones to proton and electron radiation is evaluated by assessing the radiation durability of four selected sulfones, establishing radiation interaction mechanisms with the polymer chain, and determining the dependence of radiation durability on chemical structure. Chain scission appears to predominate at lower doses up to about 10 to the 9th rad, and past this threshold the second mechanism, crosslinking, seems to predominate. This is evidenced by the increase in modulus, glass transition temperature, and increased quantity of thermally stable residue at high temperatures. The variations of chemical structure of the polysulfones appear to have little effect on the response to radiation.

Phenoxy resins containing pendent ethynyl groups

As part of an effort on tougher/solvent resistant matrix resins for composites, research was directed towards exploring methods to improve the solvent resistance of linear amorphous thermoplastics. Ethyl reactive groups were placed on the ends of oligomers and pendent along the polymer chain and subsequently thermally reacted to provide crosslinking and thus improvement in solvent resistance. This concept is extended to another thermoplastic, a phenoxy resin. A commercially available phenoxy resin (PKHH) was systematically modified by reaction of the pendent hydroxyl groups on the phenoxy resin with various amounts of 4-ethynylbenzoyl chloride. As the pendent ethynyl group content in the phenoxy resin increased, the cured resin exhibited a higher glass transition temperature, better solvent resistance and less flexibility. The solvent resistance was further improved by correcting a low molecular weight diethynyl compound, 2,2-bis(4-ethynylbenzoyloxy-4'-phenyl)propane, with a phenoxy resin containing pendent ethynyl groups.

Processing Science and Technology

The heat capacity at constant pressure,Cp, of poly-p-xylylene (PPX) was measured from 220 to 625 degrees K using differential scanning calorimetry. The heat capacities at constant volume, Cv, of both PPX and its isomer polystyrene (PS were interpreted using literature data on full normal mode calculations for PS and estimates from low molecular weight analogues for PPX for the 39 group vibrations. Nine skeletal vibrations were used with theta sub 1 and theta sub 3 temperatures of 534.5 degrees K and 43.1 degrees K for PS. It was also possible to calculate a heat capacity contribution of a phenylene group within a polymer chain. Single 48-vibration theta sub 1 temperatures of 3230 degrees K for PS and 2960 degrees K for PPX are sufficient to describe Cv above 220 degrees K. Below 140 deg K, PS heat capacity shows deviations from the Tarasov treatment.

First polymer in space identified in Comet Halley

The heavy-ion mass spectrum obtained in the inner coma of Comet Halley with the PICCA instrument on the Giotto spacecraft has been examined. Short polymer chains of polyoxymethylene and their decay products are identified as the source for the spectrum with six mass peaks between about 45 and 120 atomic mass units. The properties of polyoxymethylene are consistent with many of the unexpected observations in the coma.

Better PFAE's From Direct Fluorination

New low-molecular-weight perfluoroalkylethers (PFAE's) synthesized by direct fluorination in experimental study. Correlated viscosity and oxidation characteristics of PFAE's with structures to evaluate suitability as high-temperature lubricants and hydraulic fluids. Direct fluorination process attractive because it often involves single-step reaction and uses cheap starting materials. Versatile: produces highly branched ethers as well as polyethers containing more than two sequential carbon atoms in polymer chains. Such molecules cannot be made by conventional techniques.

Soluble and colorless polyimides

Results are reported in the form of reaction diagrams, graphs, and tables of research being conducted to synthesize and characterize linear aromatic polyimides which are soluble in common organic solvents and optically transparent in the 400-600 nm spectral range. These flexible and high-temperature polymeric films and coatings are needed for specific applications on space components such as antennas, solar cells, and thermal control coating systems. Several series of these polyimide films have been produced by making variations in the polymer molecular structure aimed at reducing the electronic interactions between the polymer chains.

Complex organic ions in the atmosphere of Comet Halley

The ordered series of broad mass groups in thermal ion mass spectra from the coma of Comet Halley obtained with the Positive Ion Cluster Composition analyzer is examined. It is found that the series is characteristic of molecules rich in H, C, N, and O, and does not necessarily imply the presence of a long chain polymer, such as polyoxymethylene. It is suggested that the spectra resemble those of singly-bonded CH2, NH, O, and H units which are similar to the molecules detected in laboratory analogs of icy interstellar dust grains.

Film properties of high performance semi-interpenetrating polyimide networks

Consideration is given to an approach to provide a semi-IPN in which two constituent materials have nearly the same chemical structure and polymer chain length. A reactive endcapped LARC-TPI polyamic acid having a formulated molecular weight of 20,000 is prepared and then combined with various quantities of a commercial LARC-TPI polyamic acid solution. The polyimide films of semi-IPNs are tested along with two constituent materials. The physical and mechanical properties of the polyimide films are presented. The applicability of using this approach to minimize phase separation and to maximize long-term phase stability is discussed. The concept of controlling morphology by chemistry is proven for providing LARC-TPI based semi-2-IPNs. A very long chain LARC-TPI endcapped with a nadic group exhibits physical properties almost identical to unendcapped LARC-TPI.

Evaluation of optically transparent polyetherimide films for applications in space

Several series of aromatic polyetherimide films have been synthesized and characterized with the objective of obtaining maximum optical transparency for applications in space. Incorporation of phenoxy groups into aromatic polyimides has resulted in a reduction in the color intensity of these films compared to commercial polyimide film by reducing electronic interactions between polymer chains. The resulting lightly colored to colorless polyetherimide films have been characterized by UV-visible and infrared spectroscopy before and after exposure to varying doses of UV and electron irradiation designed to simulate use as second-surface mirror thermal control coatings. After exposure to 300 equivalent solar hours UV irradiation and 1 MeV electron irradiation, the polyetherimides were 2.2 to 2.6 times more transparent than commercial polyimide film of the same thickness.

Molecular beam scattering from C-13 enriched Kapton and correlation with the EOIM-3 carousel experiment

Mass spectra of products emerging from identical samples of a C-13-enriched polyimide polymer (chemically equivalent to Kapton) under atomic oxygen bombardment in space and in the laboratory were collected. Reaction products unambiguously detected in space were CO-13, NO, (12)CO2, and (13)CO2. These reaction products and two others, H2O and CO-12, were detected in the laboratory, along with inelastically scattered atomic and molecular oxygen. Qualitative agreement was seen in the mass spectra taken in space and in the laboratory; the agreement may be improved by reducing the fraction of O2 in the laboratory molecular beam. Both laboratory and space data indicated that CO and CO2 products come preferentially from reaction with the imide component of the polymer chain, raising the possibility that the either component may degrade in part by the 'evaporation' of higher molecular weight fragments. Laboratory time-of-flight distributions showed: (1) incomplete energy accommodation of impinging O and O2 species that do not react with the surface; and (2) both hyperthermal and thermal CO and CO2 products, suggesting two distinct reaction mechanisms with the surface.

A novel unitized regenerative proton exchange membrane fuel cell

A difficulty encountered in designing a unitized regenerative proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell lies in the incompatibility of electrode structures and electrocatalyst materials optimized for either of the two functions (fuel cell or electrolyzer) with the needs of the other function. This difficulty is compounded in previous regenerative fuel cell designs by the fact that water, which is needed for proton conduction in the PEM during both modes of operation, is the reactant supplied to the anode in the electrolyzer mode of operation and the product formed at the cathode in the fuel cell mode. Drawbacks associated with existing regenerative fuel cells have been addressed in work performed at Lynntech. In a first innovation, electrodes function either as oxidation electrodes (hydrogen ionization or oxygen evolution) or as reduction electrodes (oxygen reduction or hydrogen evolution) in the fuel cell and electrolyzer modes, respectively. Control of liquid water within the regenerative fuel cell has been brought about by a second innovation. A novel PEM has been developed with internal channels that permit the direct access of water along the length of the membrane. Lateral diffusion of water along the polymer chains of the PEM provides the water needed at electrode/PEM interfaces. Fabrication of the novel unitized regenerative fuel cell and results obtained on testing it will be presented.

Preparation and characterization of poly (arylene ether isoxazole)s by fluoride ion-mediated aromatic nucleophilic displacement reactions

As part of a continuing effort to prepare novel thermally stable high-performance polymers, poly(arylene ether isoxazole)s have been prepared by fluoride ion-catalyzed aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions with bis(trimethylsiloxyphenyl) isoxazoles and activated bisarylhalides in diphenyl sulfone. Initial investigation involving the preparation of these materials with isoxazole bisphenols and activated bisarylhalides in the presence of potassium carbonate indicated that, under reaction conditions necessary to prepare high-molecular-weight materials, the isoxazole monomer was converted to an enamino ketone. This side reaction was avoided by using fluoride as a base. However, trimethylsilyl ether derivatives of the isoxazole bisphenols were required in these polymerizations for the preparation of high-molecular-weight materials. Moderate to high inherent viscosity eta(sub inh): 0.43-0.87 dl/g) materials with good thermal stability (air: 409-477 C, helium: 435-512 C) can be prepared by the silyl ether method. Glass transition temperatures ranged from 182 to 225 C for polymers with phenyl pendants and from 170 to 214 C for those without. Molecular weight control by 2% endcapping and the incorporation of a phenyl pendant at the 4 position of the isoxazole is necessary to yield polymers soluble in polar aprotic solvents at room temperature. There is evidence, however, indicating the existence of crosslinks between the polymer chains when the silyl ether approach is utilized.
