Modelling the limiter ramp-up of WEST for addressing the future challenges of ITER

This paper presents a joint experimental and numerical investigation into the physics of long limited plasma ramp-up in tokamaks with tungsten (W) first walls, a critical phase for ITER operation. The comparison between the average plasma quantities simulated using the SolEdge-HDG code and the measurements taken during three successive WEST discharges after boronisation shows how challenging it is to predict this phase. While simulations reproduce the general trends at the midplane, with reasonable match in density profiles, they consistently underestimate core temperatures possibly due to too large perpendicular heat conductivity. On the contrary, at the high field side (HFS) limiter, simulations overestimate the measured quantities, and highlights the limitation of using Bohm boundary conditions at grazing magnetic angles. Experimental measurements reveal that the boron layer is rapidly eroded, on a timescale comparable to a single ITER discharge. The subsequent transition from a boron-coated to a tungsten wall increases recycling and significantly degrades the core plasma, reducing the electron temperature by nearly half due to W contamination, despite wall parameters remaining stable. Furthermore, comparisons with Langmuir probes, bolometry, reflectometry, and spectroscopy indicate that the experimental far scrape-Off layer (SOL) is significantly wider than simulated. This wide SOL implies that boron erosion extends along the entire HFS limiter rather than being confined to the contact point. This work highlights some characteristics of the plasma during this phase of the discharge and emphasizes the current modelling issues that need to be resolved in order to obtain reliable predictions concerning the ITER ramp-up.

Investigation of ASIC-based signal readout electronics for LEGEND-1000

LEGEND, the Large Enriched Germanium Experiment for Neutrinoless ββ Decay, is a ton-scale experimental program to search for neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay in the isotope 76 Ge with an unprecedented sensitivity. Building on the success of the low-background 76 Ge-based GERDA and Majorana Demonstrator experiments, the LEGEND collaboration is targeting a signal discovery sensitivity beyond 10 28 yr on the decay half-life with approximately 10 t∙yr of exposure. Signal readout electronics in close proximity to the detectors plays a major role in maximizing the experiment's discovery sensitivity by reducing electronic noise and improving pulse shape analysis capabilities for the rejection of backgrounds. However, the proximity also poses unique challenges for the radiopurity of the electronics. Application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology allows the implementation of the entire charge sensitive amplifier (CSA) into a single low-mass chip while improving the electronic noise and reducing the power consumption. In this work, we investigated the properties and electronic performance of a commercially available ASIC CSA, the XGLab CUBE preamplifier, together with a p-type point contact high-purity germanium detector. We show that low noise levels and excellent energy resolutions can be obtained with this readout. Moreover, we demonstrate the viability of pulse shape discrimination techniques for reducing background events.

Conformal maps of viscous electron flow in the Gurzhi crossover

Herein we investigate the impact of geometric constriction on the viscous flow of electron liquid through quantum point contacts. We provide analysis on the electric potential distribution given the setup of a slit configuration and use the method of conformal mapping to obtain analytical results. The potential profile can be tested and contrasted experimentally with the scanning tunneling potentiometry technique. We discuss intricate physics that underlies the Gurzhi effect, i.e., the enhancement of conductivity in the viscous flow, and compare results for different boundary conditions. In addition, we calculate the temperature dependence of the momentum relaxation time as a result of impurity assisted quasiballistic interference effects and discuss various correlational corrections that lead to the violation of Matthiessen's rule in the hydrodynamic regime. We caution that spatially inhomogeneous profiles of current in the Gurzhi crossover between Ohmic and Stokes flows might also appear in the nonhydrodynamic limit where nonlocality plays an important role. This conclusion is corroborated by calculation of dispersive conductivity in the weakly impure limit.

Edge spin transport in the disordered two-dimensional topological insulator $\mathrm{WTe_2}$

The spin conductance of two-dimensional topological insulators (2D TIs) is not expected to be quantized in the presence of perturbations that break the spin-rotational symmetry. However, the deviation from the pristine-limit quantization has yet to be studied in detail. In this paper, we define the spin current operator for the helical edge modes of a 2D TI and introduce a four-terminal setup to measure spin conductances. Using the developed formalism, we consider the effects of disorder terms that break spin-rotational symmetry or give rise to edge-to-edge coupling. We identify a key role played by spin torque in an out-of-equilibrium edge. We then utilize a tight-binding model of topological monolayer $\mathrm{WTe_2}$ and scattering matrix formalism to numerically study spin transport in a four-terminal 2D TI device. In particular, we calculate the spin conductances and characteristic spin decay length in the presence of magnetic disorder. In addition, we also study the effects of interedge scattering in a quantum point contact geometry. Here we find that the spin Hall conductance is surprisingly robust to spin symmetry-breaking perturbations, as long as time-reversal symmetry is preserved and interedge scattering is weak.

Charge trapping correction and energy performance of the Majorana Demonstrator

P-type point contact (PPC) high-purity germanium detectors are an important technology in astroparticle and nuclear physics due to their superb energy resolution, low noise, and pulse shape discrimination capabilities. Analysis of data from the Majorana Demonstrator, a neutrinoless double-β decay experiment deploying PPC detectors enriched in 76 Ge, has led to several novel improvements in the analysis of PPC signals. Here, in this work we discuss charge trapping in PPC detectors and its effect on energy resolution. Small dislocations or impurities in the crystal lattice result in trapping of charge carriers from an ionization event of interest, attenuating the signal, and degrading the measured energy. We present a modified digital pole-zero correction to the signal energy estimation that counters the effects of charge trapping and improves the energy resolution of the Majorana Demonstrator by approximately 30 % to around 2.4 keV full width at half-maximum at 2039 keV, the 76 Ge Q value. An alternative approach achieving similar resolution enhancement is also presented.

Search for a Nonrelativistic Boson in Two-Body Antimuon Decay

We demonstrate the feasibility of probing the charged lepton-flavor-violating decay μ + → e + X 0 for the presence of a slow-moving neutral boson X 0 capable of undergoing gravitational binding to large structures and, as such, able to participate in some cosmological scenarios. A short exposure to surface antimuons from beam line M20 at TRIUMF generates a branching ratio limit of ≲ 10 –5 . This is comparable to or better than previous searches for this channel, although in a thus-far-unexplored region of X 0 phase space very close to the kinematic limit of the decay, where m X 0 approaches m μ+ . The future improved sensitivity of the method using a customized p -type point-contact germanium detector is described.

Study of CORC Conductors With Respect to Individual Tape Properties

CEA has been studying the advantages of a conductor based on an assembly of CORC cables in the high field zone of a hybrid Central Solenoid (CS) magnet for EU-DEMO. To this end, the detailed study of geometrical and electrical parameters of a CORC structure are studied in order to evaluate the cable’s electrical performance as well as to determine a number of important parameters (crossing points, contact surface etc…) as function of the cable structure. The paper first presents these geometrical and performance analyses. It will then try to introduce smeared models in order to reduce the cable’s performance to 1D tape scaling law using effective parameters. That reduction is of importance for use in thermohydraulic models. Finally, the paper will present the case study of a particular CORC conductor that is being procured and is foreseen to be tested in SULTAN in 2025. The paper also will try to give some predictive estimate of the cable performance and identify some of the unknowns related to current redistribution and joint resistance.

Impact of Pressure Distribution and Magnitude on the Performance of Lithium Metal Anodes

Li metal anodes are a critical battery technology due to their ability to substantially increase the energy density of Li-based batteries. It is well known that pressure greatly impacts the performance of a Li-metal anode. However, precisely how the pressure value and distribution of pressure affect performance is unclear. Furthermore, the solid-electrolyte interphase composition that forms under varying pressure distributions remains a key parameter for practical lithium metal anodes. In this work, different pressure distributions were employed by using differently shaped and oriented mechanical springs in the coin cells, resulting in varying contact points. Pressure-sensitive films were used to spatially map the pressure and correlate it to the performance. It was found that higher average pressure does not necessarily have a positive effect on performance. When high pressure is paired with poor pressure uniformity, the performance is in fact worse likely due to the current focusing effect, rendering unsatisfied cycling stability. This work points to the importance of controlling the relationship between average pressure and pressure uniformity.

Transient Studies of Nonequilibrium Transport in Two-Dimensional Semiconductors

The overarching objective of research under DOE support has been to investigate emergent carrier phenomena in different two-dimensional (2D) systems, under conditions where they are driven far from equilibrium. The description of nonequilibrium transport has long represented one of the most enduring challenges in condensed-matter physics, in large part due to the need to invoke the role of complex many-body phenomena (electron-phonon and electron-electron coupling) in this regime. In this project, we have explored aspects of this problem in a variety of different two-dimensional systems. These include the modulation-doped two-dimensional electrons gas, or 2DEG, in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures; the electron and hole systems in graphene and its related hetero-structures, and; the strongly-confined electron layers in transition-metal dichalcogenide (MoS 2 and WS 2 ) and trichalcogenide (TiS 3 ) materials. Significant understanding has been achieved in a number of different areas, as we elaborate upon in subsequent sections of this proposal: Nanoscale spectroscopy of defect-related barriers in MoS2 Negative differential conductance due to inter-valley scattering in WS 2 under high fields Incipient localization due to scattering from frozen-phonon disorder in quantum point contacts High-field transient transport in graphene/hexagonal BN heterostructures Universal voltage scaling of quantum corrections in graphene under nonequilibrium A defining feature of much of this research has been an approach to problem solving in which novel experimental techniques (such as transient electrical pulsing and scanning-probe microscopy) are combined with the development (in collaboration with colleagues from condensed-matter theory) of sophisticated models, a strategy that we propose to continue in our future research. In recent years, we have developed an increasing capacity for handling atomically-thin materials, and their van der Waals systems, a capacity that is reflected in the balance of topics listed above.

Hermetic edge-connect headers and corresponding connectors

A hermetically-sealed edge-connect header that can withstand high temperatures, high pressures (or high vacuum levels), and high vibration environments, along with two corresponding connectors are disclosed. After brazing the edge-connect header components, the assembly is machined to form a slot with a portion of each of a plurality of electrical conductors removed in the machining process, resulting in a header with a high pin density. During the process of mating the first connector design to the edge-connect header, a plurality of wipers in the connector deflect, thereby causing the wipers to extend from the connector and contact the corresponding electrical conductors in the header. During the process of mating the second connector design to the edge-connect header, each of a plurality of wipers formed of low-mass, compliant metal wool, forms multiple contact points with a corresponding electrical conductor in the header.

Solar cells formed via aluminum electroplating

Electroplating of aluminum may be utilized to form electrodes for solar cells. In contrast to expensive silver electrodes, aluminum allows for reduced cell cost and addresses the problem of material scarcity. In contrast to copper electrodes which typically require barrier layers, aluminum allows for simplified cell structures and fabrication steps. In the solar cells, point contacts may be utilized in the backside electrodes for increased efficiency. Solar cells formed in accordance with the present disclosure enable large-scale and cost-effective deployment of solar photovoltaic systems.

Comparative study on the formation of Cr and Ti ohmic contacts to (001) β -Ga 2 O 3

Here, a comparative study of Cr/Au and Ti/Au ohmic contacts on (001) β-Ga 2 O 3 was conducted. The electrical behavior from current-voltage measurements and the interfacial composition and microstructure as determined from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy dispersive x-ray analysis were compared for the different contacts at selected points in an annealing series (300–700 °C, 1 min. anneals in N 2 ). Cr/Au contacts became ohmic at temperatures (300–350 °C) approximately 50–100 °C lower than Ti/Au contacts (400–450 °C). Cr/Au and Ti/Au contacts demonstrated optimal ohmic behavior (lowest resistance) when annealed to 450–500 and 500–600 °C, respectively, with Ti/Au contacts yielding a lower total resistance than Cr/Au. Cross-sectional TEM images of Cr/Au contacts annealed at 450 °C revealed the presence of Au nanoclusters at the Ga 2 O 3 interface and CrO x layers at both the top of the contact and the Ga 2 O 3 interface. Whereas TiO x also formed at the top and bottom interfaces in 450 °C-annealed Ti/Au contacts, the TiO x surface layer appeared to be variable in thickness and/or discontinuous, unlike the CrO x surface layer. Au nanoclusters were not detected at the interface in the Ti/Au contacts. The interdiffusion and oxidation observed in both contact metallizations point to the need for diffusion barriers that may allow these contacts to be used in future Ga 2 O 3 -based devices that operate at elevated temperatures.

Discrete element model for powder grain interactions under high compressive stress

A reduced order, nonlocal model is proposed for the contact force between initially spherical particles under compression. The model in effect provides the normal component of the interaction force between elements in the discrete element method (DEM). It is applicable to high relative density and large stress in powder compaction. It takes into account the mutual interaction between multiple points of contact, in contrast to the usual assumption in DEM of pair interactions. The mathematical form of the model is derived from a variational formulation that leads to the momentum balance for the forces on each grain. The model is calibrated mainly using detailed three dimensional peridynamic simulations of single grains under compressive loading by rigid plates that move radially with prescribed velocity. This calibration takes into account the large deformation and fracture of the grains. The interaction model also includes terms for the unloading behavior and adhesion. Finally, as validation, the model is applied to test data on the compaction of microcrystalline cellulose bulk powder.
