First results from search for muon-neutrino disappearance at ICARUS

The ICARUS collaboration has completed a search for muon-neutrino disappearance in the context of the 3+1 sterile neutrino model using data collected with the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab during 2022-2023 (ICARUS Run 2). Events are reconstructed with two different reconstruction frameworks and we select events with 1 muon, at least 1 proton, and no pions in the final state. A new fitting framework, called PROfit, was developed for this analysis and used for the final results presented here. As a single detector oscillation search this analysis is systematics limited, but the tools shown here will serve as a building block for future SBN searches where systematics will be constrained by the addition of a near detector. I will discuss the details of the analysis with a focus on the fitting framework, mock data studies, and the final fitting procedure during the data unboxing.

Measurement of Reactor Antineutrino Oscillation at SNO+

SNO+ Collaboration reports its second spectral analysis of reactor antineutrino oscillation using 286 ton-yr of new data. The measured energies of reactor antineutrino candidates were fitted to obtain the second-most precise determination of the neutrino mass-squared difference Δ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{21}$=⁢(7.96$^{+0.48}_{ −0.42}$) × 10 −5 eV2. Constraining Δ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{21}$ and sin 2 ⁡𝜃 12 with measurements from long-baseline reactor antineutrino and solar neutrino experiments yields Δ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{21}$=(7.58$^{+0.18}_{−0.17}$) × 10 −5 eV 2 and sin 2 ⁡𝜃 12 = 0.308 ± 0.013. This fit also yields a first measurement of the flux of geoneutrinos in the Western Hemisphere, with 73$^{+47}_{−43}$ TNU at SNO+.

Study of Neutrino Decay Signals at NOvA

NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment with sensitivity to effects beyond the standard three-flavor oscillation framework. In this work, we study invisible neutrino decay within neutrino oscillations in the context of the NOvA experiment and its impact on measurement of the standard three-flavour parameters. Neutrino decay has been implemented in the oscillation probability calculation and validated against the standard no-decay case. Here we present the current status of the analysis, focusing on oscillation probabilities and neutrino event rate predictions including invisible neutrino decay.

An energy-modified quantum defect method for the analysis of Rydberg spectra: Application to 2-butyne

The high resolution Rydberg absorption spectrum of 2-butyne C 4 H 6 recorded previously at the SOLEIL synchrotron facility has been interpreted using multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT). The calculations are based on the continuum scattering calculations of Xu et al., J. Chem. Phys. 136, 154303 (2012) and of Jacovella et al., J. Phys. Chem. A 119, 12339 (2015) pertaining to the dipole-allowed excited state symmetries in absorption from the ground state. In contrast to the traditional approach of calculating low-lying electronic states first and then attempting to extend the calculations to ever higher energy, here the analysis proceeds through the extension of these detailed calculations of the electronic continuum scattering down into the discrete region of the spectrum. The continuum reaction matrices and dipole transition moments are adapted to the discrete Rydberg region via the use of an energy-modified formulation of MQDT theory and associated energy dependences of the quantum defects. The analysis reproduces more than 40 Rydberg states from n ≈ 10 down to the 3 d and 4 s levels with an rms error of better than 20 cm −1 . Further, these belong to five Rydberg series with three different molecular symmetries. While the approach predicts many additional series, most of these are calculated and observed to carry only little oscillator strength. The analysis shows that the Rydberg spectrum is dominated by the excitation of an e″ symmetry electron of fδ and gπ type, in line with what previous studies of the above-threshold shape resonance of 2-butyne have shown. The present study is intended to serve as an example showing how first principles continuum calculations may be useful for the interpretation of highly bound discrete states in a range that poses problems for the standard ab initio techniques. The quantitative treatment of the dipole absorption cross sections is deferred to a future paper.

Measurement of the mean excitation energy of liquid argon

The mean excitation energy (I-value) of liquid argon is a critical input for energy estimation in neutrino oscillation experiments. It is measured to be 199 +4 -5 eV using the range of 402.2 MeV protons from the Fermilab Linac. This compares to the author's recent evaluation of (197 ± 7) eV based on a combination of an oscillator strength distribution analysis, gaseous argon range measurements, sparse stopping power data on solid argon, and an extrapolation of data on the effect of phase from other substances. Using all sources of information, we recommend a value of (198 ± 4) eV for liquid argon, which is significantly higher than 188 eV, from ICRU-37's gaseous argon evaluation, commonly used in Monte Carlo codes such as Geant4.

Extensive analysis of reconstruction algorithms for DESI 2024 baryon acoustic oscillations

Reconstruction of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal has been a standard procedure in BAO analyses over the past decade and has helped to improve the BAO parameter precision by a factor of ∼2 on average. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) BAO analysis for the first year (DR1) data uses the “standard” reconstruction framework, in which the displacement field is estimated from the observed density field by solving the linearized continuity equation in redshift space, and galaxy and random positions are shifted in order to partially remove non-linearities. There are several approaches to solving for the displacement field in real survey data, including the multigrid (MG), iterative Fast Fourier Transform (iFFT), and iterative Fast Fourier Transform particle (iFFTP) algorithms. In this work, we analyze these algorithms and compare them with various metrics including two-point statistics and the displacement itself using realistic DESI mocks. We focus on three representative DESI samples, the emission line galaxies (ELG), quasars (QSO), and the bright galaxy sample (BGS), which cover the extreme redshifts and number densities, and potential wide-angle effects. We conclude that the MG and iFFT algorithms agree within 0.4% in post-reconstruction power spectrum on BAO scales with the RecSym convention, which does not remove large-scale redshift space distortions (RSDs), in all three tracers. The RecSym convention appears to be less sensitive to displacement errors than the RecIso convention, which attempts to remove large-scale RSDs. However, iFFTP deviates from the first two; thus, we recommend against using iFFTP without further development. In addition, we provide the optimal settings for reconstruction for five years of DESI observation. The analyses presented in this work pave the way for DESI DR1 analysis as well as future BAO analyses.

Initial measurement of reactor antineutrino oscillation at SNO+

The SNO+ collaboration reports its first spectral analysis of long-baseline reactor antineutrino oscillation using 114 tonne-years of data. Fitting the neutrino oscillation probability to the observed energy spectrum yields constraints on the neutrino mass-squared difference Δ$m^2_{21}$. In the ranges allowed by previous measurements, the best-fit Δ$m^2_{21}$ is ($8.85^{+1.10}_{-1.33}$) × 10 -5 eV 2 . This measurement is continuing in the next phases of SNO+ and is expected to surpass the present global precision on Δ$m^2_{21}$ with about three years of data. In the following, we first describe the configuration of the SNO+ detector when it was partially filled with scintillator, and a characterization of the detector response using intrinsic radioactivity. Next, we detail the event selection and expectations for reactor IBDs and (α, n) reactions. Then, we present the results of an energy spectrum analysis using 114 tonne-years of data. We conclude with prospects of future results from the SNO+ detector, which has been operating fully-filled with 780 tonnes of scintillator

Fermi surface topology and magnetotransport properties of superconducting Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2

Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 is a rare realization of a superconducting metal with a non-zero topological invariant. Here, in this study, we report the growth of high-quality single crystals of layered Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 with a superconducting transition at T c ≈ 0.80 K and upper critical fields of ~10 mT and ~5 mT for the in plane and out-of-plane directions, respectively. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal three pairs of doubly degenerate bands crossing the Fermi level all displaying clear three dimensional dispersion consistent with the overall low electronic anisotropy (<2). The multiband electronic nature of Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 is evident in magneto-transport measurements, yielding a sign changing Hall resistivity at low temperatures. The magnetoresistance is non-saturating and follows Kohler’s scaling rule. We interpret the magneto-transport data in terms of open orbits that are revealed in the DFT calculated Fermi surface. de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements using torque magnetometry on single crystals yield four frequencies for out-of-plane fields: F α = (150 ± 26) T, F β = (293 ± 10) T, F γ = (375 ± 20) T and F η = (1017 ± 12) T, with the low frequency dominating the spectrum. Through the measurement of angular dependent dHvA oscillations and DFT calculations we identify the F α frequency with an approximately ellipsoidal electron pocket centered on the L 2 point of the Brillouin zone. Lifshitz-Kosevich analysis of the dHvA oscillations reveals a small cyclotron effective mass m* = (0.11 ± 0.02)m 0 and a nontrivial Berry phase for the dominant orbit. The presence of nontrivial topology in a bulk superconductor positions Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 as a potential candidate for exploring topological superconductivity.

Dark Energy Survey: Galaxy sample for the baryonic acoustic oscillation measurement from the final dataset

In this paper, we present and validate the galaxy sample used for the analysis of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Y6 data. The definition is based on a color and redshift-dependent magnitude cut optimized to select galaxies at redshifts higher than 0.6, while ensuring a high-quality photo- z determination. The optimization is performed using a Fisher forecast algorithm, finding the optimal i -magnitude cut to be given by i < 19.64 + 2.894 z ph . For the optimal sample, we forecast an increase in precision in the BAO measurement of ∼ 25 % with respect to the Y3 analysis. Our BAO sample has a total of 15,937,556 galaxies in the redshift range 0.6 < z ph < 1.2 , and its angular mask covers 4 , 273.42 deg 2 to a depth of i = 22.5 . We validate its redshift distributions with three different methods: directional neighborhood fitting algorithm (DNF), which is our primary photo- z estimation; direct calibration with spectroscopic redshifts from VIPERS, which is a spectroscopic galaxy sample that overlaps with our BAO sample and is complete within our selection cuts; and clustering redshift using SDSS galaxies. The fiducial redshift distribution is a combination of these three techniques performed by modifying the mean and width of the DNF distributions to match those of VIPERS and clustering redshift. In this paper, we also describe the methodology used to mitigate the effect of observational systematics, which is analogous to the one used in the Y3 analysis. This paper is one of the two dedicated to the analysis of the BAO signal in DES Y6. In its companion paper, we present the angular diameter distance constraints obtained through the fitting to the BAO scale.

New directions for joint neutrino oscillation measurements with T2K and NOvA

The first joint analysis of data from the NOvA and T2K neutrino oscillations experiments was published in 2025, offering the most precise measurements of the larger mass splitting $\Delta m_{32}^{2}$, the largest mixing angle $\theta_{23}$, and the CP-violating phase $\delta_{CP}$ available at the time. In addition to working towards a reanalysis with additional data collected since that analysis, the collaborations are now exploring possible constraints on BSM physics scenarios. This poster will discuss the potential of a joint measurement of parameters in a framework treating effective non-standard neutral-current neutrino-matter interactions, NC-NSI. Uniquely, the differing baselines and energies of T2K and NOvA allow strong constraints to be set on the electron-muon and electron-tau parameters of NSI contributions to the Hamiltonian, while at the same time maintaining good sensitivity to the standard 3-flavor neutrino oscillations parameters, including the CP phase.

Ultrafast low-temperature metal–insulator interface phonon dynamics and heat transport in a Pt/Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 heterostructure

Interfacial thermal and acoustic phenomena have an important role in quantum science and technology, including in spintronic and spincaloritronic materials and devices. Simultaneous measurements of the low-temperature thermal and acoustic properties of a metal/insulator heterostructure reveal distinct dynamics in the characteristic phonon frequency ranges of acoustic and thermal transport. The measurements probed a heterostructure consisting of a thin film of Pt on the ferrimagnetic insulator gadolinium iron garnet (Gd 3 Fe 5 O 12 , GdIG) grown epitaxially on a gadolinium gallium garnet substrate. Ultrafast structural dynamics within the Pt layer were tracked using time-resolved ultrafast x-ray diffraction and analyzed to probe interfacial acoustic and thermal properties. The rapid heating of the Pt layer by a 400 nm wavelength femtosecond-duration optical pulse produced transient structural changes that provided the stimulus for these measurements. Rapid heating produced a broadband acoustic pulse that was partially reflected by the Pt/GdIG interface. Temporal frequencies up to 740 GHz, corresponding to angular frequencies of several THz, were detected in a wavelet analysis of the acoustic oscillations of the strain in the Pt layer. The structural results were analyzed to determine (i) the acoustic damping coefficient and phonon mean free path in Pt at frequencies of hundreds of GHz and (ii) the Grüneisen anharmonicity parameter. The thermal conductance of the Pt/GdIG interface was tracked using the slower, tens-of-picosecond-scale, dynamics of the initial cooling of the heated Pt layer. Analysis using a model based on the Boltzmann transport equation shows that the phonon transmission is lower at the phonon frequencies relevant to thermal transport than for subterahertz regime acoustics.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Control of Energy Storage for Interarea Oscillation Damping

With the increasing electricity consumption and lack of transmission investment, today's power systems are operated much closer to their limits, raising concerns of inter-area oscillations that deteriorate the system stability. Here, this article presents a novel energy storage placement and control approach for enhanced damping of interarea oscillations. Combining the residual analysis and dominant mode analysis, we are able to identify the advantageous locations for placing energy storage that achieve improved damping performance. To overcome the challenges, such as fixed control parameters and insufficient damping, we propose to use a deep reinforcement learning-based approach for energy storage control. A state-of-the-art guided surrogate-gradient-based evolutionary strategy is used to train a learning agent in a robust, efficient, and reproducible manner. Parallel computing is also adopted to speed up the training process. The proposed strategy has been tested on both medium and large-scale systems. The proposed methods have demonstrated their effectiveness in mitigating various interarea oscillations within a timeframe of 20 s, thereby averting system collapse and enhancing power grid stability effectively.

Web-based wide-area monitoring platform for ringdown and clustering analytics in power systems

This paper introduces an open-source research platform for monitoring the Mexican interconnected power grid, allowing real-time processing and information extraction of the grid’s dynamic condition. Moreover, the platform is a Python-based development that embeds different ringdown and clustering analytics tools. In the case of ringdown analysis, the modal information can be extracted using some of the most known algorithms, i.e., Prony analysis, eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA), and matrix pencil (MP). For clustering analysis, the coherent behaviour of generator and non-generator buses is provided by applying recent state-of-the-art techniques such as affinity propagation, K-means, hierarchical agglomerative clustering, and typicality data analysis. The results of up to 93 PMUs show that this open-source platform suits researchers’ and engineers’ power system dynamic analysis requirements.

Fiducial-cosmology-dependent systematics for the DESI 2024 BAO analysis

When measuring the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) scale from galaxy surveys, one typically assumes a fiducial cosmology when converting redshift measurements into comoving distances and also when defining input parameters for the reconstruction algorithm. A parameterised template for the model to be fitted is also created based on a (possibly different) fiducial cosmology. This model reliance can be considered a form of data compression, and the data is then analysed allowing that the true answer is different from the fiducial cosmology assumed. In this study, we evaluate the impact of the fiducial cosmology assumed in the BAO analysis of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey Data Release 1 (DR1) on the final measurements in DESI 2024 III. We utilise a suite of mock galaxy catalogues with survey realism that mirrors the DESI DR1 tracers: the bright galaxy sample (BGS), the luminous red galaxies (LRG), the emission line galaxies (ELG) and the quasars (QSO), spanning a redshift range from 0.1 to 2.1. We compare the four secondary AbacusSummit cosmologies against DESI's fiducial cosmology (Planck 2018). The secondary cosmologies explored include a lower cold dark matter density, a thawing dark energy universe, a higher number of effective species, and a lower amplitude of matter clustering. The mocks are processed through the BAO pipeline by consistently iterating the grid, template, and reconstruction reference cosmologies. We determine a conservative systematic contribution to the error of 0.1% for both the isotropic and anisotropic dilation parameters αiso and αAP. We then directly test the impact of the fiducial cosmology on DESI DR1 data.

Three-flavor, full momentum space neutrino spin oscillations in neutron star mergers

In the presence of anisotropic neutrino and antineutrino fluxes, the quantum kinetic equations drive coherent oscillations in neutrino helicity, frequently referred to as spin oscillations. These oscillations depend directly on the absolute mass scale and Majorana phase, but are usually too transient to produce important effects. In this paper we present a full momentum-space analysis of Majorana neutrino spin oscillations in a snapshot of a three-dimensional neutron star merger simulation. We find an interesting angular dependence that allows for that resonant and adiabatic oscillations to occur along specific directions in a large volume of the merger remnant. The solid angle spanned by these directions is extremely narrow in general. We then analyze spin transformation in the presence of flavor transformation by characterizing how the effect's resonance and timescale change during a fast flavor instability. For this analysis, we derive a generalized resonance condition that poses a restrictive requirement for resonance to exist in any flavor channel. Finally, we determine that spin oscillations at all locations in the merger snapshot have a length scale that is too large for significant oscillations to be expected even where there exist resonant and adiabatic directions.
