Bridging Cloud and Edge Computing at NREL Using CONNECT: Cloud Optimized Networking for Next-Gen Edge Computing Technologies [Slides]

CONNECT is an innovative on-premise hardware and software solution that integrates edge and cloud computing infrastructure at NREL. Built on the AWS Greengrass middleware and leveraging the MQTT protocol, CONNECT enables real-time data streaming from IoT devices and gateways to both cloud and local services, empowering researchers to rapidly capture, analyze, and act upon edge-generated data while leveraging cloud capabilities. The platform addresses research infrastructure challenges by providing a pre-approved platform which is already configured with the correct networking and cybersecurity baselines thus eliminating procurement delays and enabling on-demand availability. CONNECT's hybrid architecture efficiently manages burstable workloads, allowing research teams to dynamically scale computational capacity, handle peak data loads, and reduce operational bottlenecks. Advanced capabilities include built-in GPU support for executing machine learning models which enables low-latency inference at the edge from models trained in the cloud. This architecture supports real-time analytics and filtering, providing a mechanism to allow only transmitting and processing high-value data. Cloud-based configuration management permits engineers to manage on-premise systems remotely, optimizing operational efficiency. By bridging edge and cloud computing, CONNECT provides NREL researchers with a flexible, scalable platform that accelerates scientific discovery while maintaining robust security and performance standards.

Causes of and Solutions to Wind Speed Bias in NREL’s 2020 Offshore Wind Resource Assessment for the California Pacific Outer Continental Shelf

This report provides the results of a detailed analysis of the causes of high wind speed bias in the 20-year wind resource data set for offshore California that the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) released in 2020, herein called CA20. The data set was developed using the state-of-the-art Weather Research and Forecasting model. Notably, no floating lidars were available at the time in offshore California to validate offshore hub-height wind speeds. In late 2020, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) deployed two floating lidars in the California Outer Continental Shelf, near the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) call areas of Humboldt and Morro Bay. Using these observations through 2021, NREL found considerable bias in modeled hub-height winds at both locations: up to +2 m/s at Humboldt over a 6-month period, and up to +1 m/s at Morro Bay over a 1-year period.

Building a Sustainable Aviation Brain Trust: Key Insights From the 2022 NREL Partner Forum

Cross-sector collaboration is key for guiding the large, complex aviation industry over the emissions peak and quickly down the slope to net-zero - that theme was repeated regularly during the two-day 2022 NREL Partner Forum. With an expanding global economy, more people than ever want the convenience of air travel. That has made aviation the fastest-growing transportation sector, as well as a rising source of carbon emissions. How can the industry serve its customers while charting a course to net-zero in line with climate goals? Interest and momentum from public and private sectors are mounting to answer that question, a backdrop for the Partner Forum. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) brought 200 attendees to the whiteboard to find common goals, align interests, understand technologies, and discuss steps for safely and seamlessly decarbonizing aviation. This document captures the tenor of the conversations and provides a summary of the 1.5 day event for those who were not able to attend or who have interest in this area.

Programa de Diseno, Fabricacion y Pruebas del Sistema de Desalinizacion por Olas del NREL: Preprint (Spanish Translation)

To de-risk the U.S. Department of Energy's Waves to Water Prize, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed a modular, wave powered desalination system. The prize was open to wave energy converter (WEC) designs that generate electricity or WECs that desalinate water mechanically. This added installation risks due to the variance in competitor devices, and the aggressive installation timeline. To reduce these risks NREL developed a wave energy converter (WEC) that the installation team could use to practice installation techniques prior to the competitors arriving to ensure all steps had been considered prior to the event. This was achieved by developing a WEC with a modular power-take-off (PTO). The modular PTO can be configured in one configuration to drive an electric generator that sends electricity to a pier. The electricity that is generated is converted, and stored, so that it can be used to power an electric pump that feeds water to a Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination unit. In the other configuration the generator is replaced with a pump and seawater is pumped to the RO system on the pier without any electrons being generated. This WEC is formally known as the Hydraulic and Electric Reverse Osmosis (HERO) WEC. For the English version of this report, see NREL/CP-5700-86623 (https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy24osti/86623.pdf).
