Decorated Honeycomb Lattice and Successive Magnetic Transitions of the Delafossite Derivative K 4 Ni 5 Te 3 O 16

Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of the delafossite derivative K 4 Ni 5 Te 3 O 16 , which hosts a decorated honeycomb Ni 2+ lattice. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and neutron diffraction establish a noncentrosymmetric Pmm2 crystal structure that combines regular honeycomb units with elongated motifs formed by Ni 2+ trimers along extended edges. Magnetic susceptibility reveals strong antiferromagnetic interactions, while heat capacity measurements identify two successive magnetic transitions at 30 and 12 K. Neutron diffraction shows that these transitions correspond to a progression from partial to full long-range magnetic order on distinct Ni sites, reflecting competition among the various exchange interactions. The resulting magnetic point group, mm2.1′, inherits the lattice polarity and permits high-order magnetoelectric coupling. Consistent with this symmetry, a quadratic magnetic-field-induced polarization is experimentally observed below the magnetic ordering temperature, likely arising from exchange-driven magnetostriction coupled to the polar lattice. These results establish K 4 Ni 5 Te 3 O 16 as an interesting platform for engineering B-site ordering in delafossite derivatives to realize complex quantum magnetism and functional responses.

Magnetocapacitance effect and magnetoelectric coupling in type-II multiferroic HoFeWO 6

We have investigated the multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in HoFeWO 6 . With a noncentrosymmetric polar structure (space group Pna2 1 ) at room temperature, this compound shows an onset of electric polarization with an antiferromagnetic ordering at the Néel temperature (T N ) of 17.8 K. The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline samples were studied by DC and AC magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures was found to be directly related to the dielectric properties of the compound. In particular, field-dependent measurements of capacitance show a magnetocapacitance (MC) effect with double-hysteresis loop behavior in direct correspondence with the magnetization. Our x-ray diffraction results show the Pna2 1 structure down to 8 K and suggest the absence of a structural phase transition across T N . Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L 2,3 and Ho M 4,5 edges revealed the oxidation state of Fe and Ho cations to be 3+. Fe L 2,3 XMCD further shows that Fe 3+ cations are antiferromagnetically ordered in a noncollinear fashion with spins arranged 90° with respect to each other. Our findings show that HoFeWO 6 is a type-II multiferroic exhibiting a MC effect. Furthermore, the observed MC effect and the change in polarization by the magnetic field, as well as their direct correspondence with magnetization, further support the strong ME coupling in this compound.

Programmable Phase Selection between Altermagnetic and Noncentrosymmetric Polymorphs of MnTe on InP via Molecular Beam Epitaxy

This dataset contains DFT input and output files supporting the theoretical modeling in the associated publication (ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2026, 18, 15654-15664). The calculations model the interfacial energetics of two MnTe polymorphs — NiAs-MnTe (hexagonal, alpha phase) and ZnS-MnTe (cubic, gamma phase) — on InP(111) substrates with two surface terminations: In-terminated InP(111)A and P-terminated InP(111)B. This gives four interface configurations: NiAs on In-terminated (experimentally observed), NiAs on P-terminated (computed for comparison), ZnS on In-terminated (computed for comparison), and ZnS on P-terminated (experimentally observed). The dataset is organized into four calculation types, each covering all four polymorph/termination combinations: (i) Slabs: Pristine MnTe/InP heterostructure slabs used to compute total energies and interface energy densities (Eint) for all four configurations, as reported in Fig. 6 of the main text. (ii) Disorder: Same slab geometries with a P_Te + Te_P antisite defect pair introduced near the interface, used to assess chemical intermixing effects on interface stability (Fig. S8, SI). (iii) Strain: Pristine slab calculations with in-plane lattice parameters strained by -1% and +1% relative to the InP lattice constant, used to evaluate strain-dependent interface energetics (Fig. S9, SI). (iv) Charge_Density: Single-point calculations on the full heterostructure, the isolated InP slab, and the isolated MnTe slab at fixed geometry, used to compute differential charge density plots showing interfacial charge accumulation and depletion as a function of surface termination (Fig. S10, SI). Each calculation folder contains INCAR, KPOINTS, POSCAR, CONTCAR, OUTCAR, and POTCAR_info.txt (PAW potential information, excluding the full POTCAR due to VASP licensing restrictions). The calculations were performed using VASP 6.4.3 with PBE exchange-correlation, PAW potentials, a Hubbard correction of Ueff = 5 eV on Mn d-states, and A-type AFM spin initialization.

Sm 2 Ru 3 Sn 5 : A Noncentrosymmetric Cubic Member of the Ln 2 M 3 X 5 Family

An optimized synthetic method is presented for Sm 2 Ru 3 Sn 5 and investigate its physical properties and electronic structure. Sm 2 Ru 3 Sn 5 is prepared by arc-melting stoichiometric ratios of the elements and is confirmed by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. An antiferromagnetic transition is observed at T N = 3.8 K. A modified Curie-Weiss fit to the data in the range 50–150 K yields a Curie-Weiss temperature: θ CW = −36.6 K and an effective magnetic moment: μ eff = 0.83 μ B , in agreement with a Sm 3+ oxidation state. Field-dependent magnetization up to H = 7 T at 2 K shows a maximum response of 0.06 μ B , which is significantly lower than the expected Sm 3+ saturation moment (0.71 μ B ). Resistivity measurements indicate metallic behavior, and analysis of the magnetic entropy from the heat capacity reveals a doublet ground state due to crystal electric field splitting. The electronic structure and density of states are calculated with density function theory and further supported by the local density approximation with dynamical mean-field theory. Finally, the experimental and computational results highlight localized Sm 3+ moments and suggest a possible interplay between Ruddelman–Kitel–Kasuya–Yosida and Kondo interactions, positioning Sm 2 Ru 3 Sn 5 as a promising material for studying topology and complex physical phenomena.
