Origin of High-Energy Protons Responsible for Late-Phase Pion-Decay Gamma-Ray Continuum from the Sun

Gamma-ray emission from solar eruptions can last far beyond the impulsive phase of the associated flares, and hence termed as sustained gamma-ray emission (SGRE). These gamma-rays result from the decay of neutral pions produced when >300 MeV protons collide with hydrogen and heavier elements in the solar photosphere. The source of protons producing SGRE has two possible origins: (i) particles accelerated in the associated flare are somehow trapped in magnetic structures and diffuse slowly to the chromosphere, and (ii) particles accelerated at the shock front that diffuse back to the Sun. In this presentation, we compile currently available observations and inferences that support these two possibilities. We use the gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi/LAT) in conjunction with coronal mass ejection (CME) data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and type II radio burst information from the Wind spacecraft. We also use the GOES soft X-ray flare information.

Understanding hadronic interactions using advanced reconstruction techniques

ProtoDUNE-SP served as the prototype of the future Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). With a total liquid argon mass of 0.77 kt, it stood as the most extensive monolithic single-phase Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) ever constructed. Strategically located and operated at CERN, ProtoDUNE-SP benefited from a specialized charged-particle test beam, offering a momentum range of 0.3 - 7 GeV/c. This setup provided a unique opportunity to conduct in-depth studies on hadronic interactions within argon. Hadronic interactions play a fundamental role in neutrino physics, particularly in the intricacies of neutrino detection. We depend on analyzing the outcomes of these interactions to accurately determine both the flavor and energy of the interacting neutrinos. Pions, as one of the primary byproducts of neutrino interactions, are crucial for understanding the overall dynamics and kinematics of these processes. Accurately characterizing and understanding the interaction of pions with argon can significantly enhance the precision of neutrino simulations and measurements.Being a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC), ProtoDUNE-SP is distinguished by its ability to produce high-definition images of charged particles as they traverse through the detector's active volume. Yet, accurately reconstructing these particle interactions and determining their kinematic attributes remains a challenging task. The successes of deep learning in diverse domains, especially in image recognition, provide a promising approach for addressing this challenge in ProtoDUNE. This thesis discusses a measurement of the Piplus - argon inelastic cross section in the energy range of 2400 to 3000 MeV, using data taken by protoDUNE during the fall of 2018. Additionally, panoptic segmentation, a machine learning technique, is introduced and validated through its application in the reconstruction of the neutral pion rest mass. The aim is to showcase how these advanced methods can enhance the quality of event reconstruction.

Search for Lepton-Flavor-Violating Decay Modes 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ with Hadronic 𝐵 Tagging at Belle and Belle II

We present the first search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay modes 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ (ℓ=𝜇,𝑒) using the 711 and 365 fb −1 data samples recorded by the Belle and Belle II detectors, respectively. We use a hadronic 𝐵-tagging technique to fully reconstruct a 𝐵 meson and search for signal decays in the system recoiling against the tagged meson, considering 𝜏 decays to either light leptons, one charged hadron, or one charged hadron and a neutral pion. We find no evidence for 𝐵 0 →𝐾$^0_𝑆$⁢𝜏 ± ⁢ℓ ∓ decays and set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of [0.8,3.6] ×10 −5 .

A light scalar explanation of (g - 2) μ and the KOTO anomaly

The KOTO experiment has recently performed a search for neutral Kaons decaying into neutral pions and a pair of neutrinos. Three events were observed in the KOTO signal region, with an expected background of about 0.05. Since no clear signal of systematic errors have been found, the excess of events in the decay K-L → π 0 v$\overline{v}$ is quite intriguing. One possibility to explain this anomaly would be the presence of a scalar $\phi$ with mass of the order of the pion mass and inducing decays K-L → π 0 $\phi$ which mimic the observed signal. A scalar with mass of the order of the pion mass and a coupling to muons of the order of the Standard Model Higgs coupling could also explain the muon anomalous magnetic moment anomaly (g - 2) μ . We built on these facts to show that a light singlet scalar with couplings to the leptons and quarks as the ones induced by mixing with Higgs states in two Higgs doublet models may lead to an explanation of both anomalies. More specifically, we show that this is the case in the so-called type-X models in which leptons and quarks couple to two different Higgs doublets, and for scalar masses that are in the range between 40 and 70 MeV. Due to the relatively large coupling to leptons required to fit (g - 2) μ , the scalar lifetime accidentally falls into the sub-nanosecond range which is essential to evade the severe proton beam dump experiments and astrophysical constraints, though it becomes sensitive to constraints from electron beam dump experiments. The additional phenomenological properties of this model are discussed.

Measurement of CP observables in B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (*) π ± decays using two-body D final states

Measurements of CP observables in B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (*) π ± decays are presented, where D (∗) indicates a neutral D or D ∗ meson that is an admixture of meson and anti-meson states. Decays of the D (∗) meson to the Dπ 0 and Dγ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon. Decays of the D meson are reconstructed in the K ± π ∓ , K + K - , and π + π - final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions and collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0, 1.0, and 5.7 fb -1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, respectively. The measurements of partially reconstructed B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (∗) π ± with D → K ∓ π ± decays are the first of their kind, and a first observation of the B ± → (Dπ 0 ) D ∗ π ± decay is made with a significance of 6.1 standard deviations. All CP observables are measured with world-best precision, and in combination with other LHCb results will provide strong constraints on the CKM angle γ.

Updated search for $ {B}_c^{+} $ decays to two charm mesons

A data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment has been analysed to search for B c + → D s ∗ + — D ∗ 0 decays. The decays are fully or partially reconstructed, where one or two missing neutral pions or photons from the decay of an excited charm meson are allowed. Upper limits for the branching fractions, normalised to B + decays to final states with similar topologies, are obtained for sixteen $ {B}_c^{+} $ decay modes. For the decay $ {B}_c^{+}\to {D}_s^{+}{\overline{D}}^0 $, an excess with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations is found.

Nuclear modification factor of light neutral-meson spectra up to high transverse momentum in p–Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

Neutral pion (π 0 ) and η meson production cross sections were measured up to unprecedentedly high transverse momenta (p T ) in p–Pb collisions at √ s NN = 8.16 TeV. The mesons were reconstructed via their two-photon decay channel in the rapidity interval –1.3 < y < 0.3 in the ranges of 0.4 < p T < 200 GeV/c and 1.0 < p T < 50 GeV/c, respectively. The respective nuclear modification factor (R pPb ) is presented for p T up to of 200 and 30 GeV/c, where the former was achieved by extending the π 0 measurement in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV using the merged cluster technique. The values of R pPb are below unity for p T < 10 GeV/c, while they are consistent with unity for p T > 10 GeV/c, leaving essentially no room for final state energy loss. The new data provide strong constraints for nuclear parton distribution and fragmentation functions over a broad kinematic range and are compared to model predictions as well as previous results at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV.

Semi-inclusive direct photon + jet and 𝜋 0 + jet correlations measured in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and central Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200GeV

The STAR experiment at RHIC reports new measurements of jet quenching based on the semi- inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from direct photon (γ dir ) and neutral pion (π 0 ) triggers in pp and central Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV, for triggers in the range 9 < $E$$^{trig}_{T}$ < 20 GeV. The datasets have integrated luminosities of 3.9nb −1 for Au + Au and 23pb −1 for 𝑝𝑝 collisions. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-𝑘 𝑇 algorithm with resolution parameters 𝑅 = 0.2 and 0.5. The large uncorrelated jet background in central Au + Au collisions is corrected using a mixed-event approach, which enables precise charged-particle jet measurements at low transverse momentum 𝑝$^{ch}_{𝑇,jet}$ and large 𝑅. Recoil-jet distributions are reported in the range 𝑝$^{ch}_{𝑇,jet}$ < 25 GeV/𝑐. Comparison of the distributions measured in 𝑝𝑝 and Au + Au collisions reveals strong medium-induced jet yield suppression for 𝑅 = 0.2 with markedly less suppression for 𝑅 = 0.5. Comparison is also made to theoretical models incorporating jet quenching. Furthermore, these data provide new insight into the mechanisms underlying jet quenching and the angular dependence of medium-induced jet-energy transport and provide new constraints on modeling such effects.

Jet modification via 𝜋 0 -hadron correlations in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4–12 GeV/𝑐 and 0.5–7 GeV/𝑐, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au + Au collisions and 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions, 𝐼 𝐴⁢𝐴 and Δ 𝐴⁢𝐴 , as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, Δ⁢𝜙, are measured for the first time at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Finally, these results better quantify how the yield of low-𝑝 𝑇 associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

First Double-Differential Cross Section Measurement of Neutral-Current 𝜋 0 Production in Neutrino-Argon Scattering in the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first double-differential cross section measurement of neutral-current neutral pion (NC⁢𝜋 0 ) production in neutrino-argon scattering, as well as single-differential measurements of the same channel in terms of final states with and without protons. The kinematic variables of interest for these measurements are the 𝜋 0 momentum and the 𝜋 0 scattering angle with respect to the neutrino beam. A total of 4971 candidate NC⁢𝜋 0 events fully contained within the MicroBooNE detector are selected using data collected at a mean neutrino energy of ∼0.8 GeV from 6.4 ×10 20 protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. After extensive data-driven model validation to ensure unbiased unfolding, the Wiener-singular-value-decomposition method is used to extract nominal flux-averaged cross sections. The results are compared to predictions from commonly used neutrino event generators, which tend to overpredict the measured NC⁢𝜋 0 cross section, especially in the 0.2–0.5 GeV/c 𝜋 0 momentum range and at forward scattering angles. Events with at least one proton present in the final state are also underestimated. This data will help improve the modeling of NC⁢𝜋 0 production, which represents a major background in measurements of charge-parity violation in the neutrino sector and in searches for new physics beyond the standard model.

Measurement of In-Medium Jet Modification Using Direct Photon + Jet and 𝜋 0 + Jet Correlations in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Central Au + Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration presents measurements of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from energetic direct-photon (𝛾 dir ) and neutral-pion (𝜋 0 ) triggers in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and central Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ =2 00 GeV over a broad kinematic range, for jet resolution parameters 𝑅 = 0.2 and 0.5. Medium-induced jet yield suppression is observed to be larger for 𝑅 = 0.2 than for 0.5, reflecting the angular range of jet energy redistribution due to quenching. The predictions of model calculations incorporating jet quenching are not fully consistent with the observations. Furthermore, these results provide new insight into the physical origins of jet quenching.

Jet-like correlations with respect to $\textrm{K}^{0}_\mathrm{{S}}$ and $\Lambda $ ($\overline{\Lambda }$) in pp and central Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV

Two-particle correlations with $\textrm{K}^{0}_\mathrm{{S}}$, $\Lambda $ /$\overline{\Lambda }$, and charged hadrons as trigger particles in the transverse momentum range 8 < p T,trig < 16 GeV/c , and associated charged particles within 1 < p T,assoc < 8 GeV/c , are studied at midrapidity in pp and central Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\mathbf {\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. After subtracting the contributions of the flow background, the per-trigger yields are extracted on both the near and away sides, and the ratio in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions (I AA ) is computed. The per-trigger yield in Pb–Pb collisions on the away side is strongly suppressed to the level of I AA ≈0.6 for p T,assoc > 3 GeV/c as expected from strong in-medium energy loss, while an enhancement develops at low p T,assoc on both the near and away sides, reaching I AA ≈1.8 and 2.7 respectively. These findings are in good agreement with previous ALICE measurements from two-particle correlations triggered by neutral pions (π 0 –h) and charged hadrons (h–h) in Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}} = 2.76$ TeV. Moreover, the correlations with $\textrm{K}^{0}_\mathrm{{S}}$ mesons and $\Lambda $ /$\overline{\Lambda }$ baryons as trigger particles are compared to those of inclusive charged hadrons. The results are compared with the predictions of Monte Carlo models.

$\Sigma ^{+}$ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textit{s}}=13$ TeV

The measurement of $\Sigma ^{+}$ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is presented. The measurement is performed at midrapidity in both minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The $\Sigma ^{+}$ is reconstructed via its weak-decay topology in the decay channel $\Sigma ^{+} \rightarrow \mathrm{{p}} + \pi ^{0}$ with $\pi ^{0} \rightarrow \gamma + \gamma$. In a novel approach, the neutral pion is reconstructed by combining photons that convert in the detector material with photons measured in the calorimeters. The transverse-momentum $(p_{\textrm{T}})$ distributions of the $\Sigma ^{+}$ and its rapidity densities dN/dy in both event classes are reported. The $p_{\textrm{T}}$ spectrum in minimum-bias collisions is compared to QCD-inspired event generators. The ratio of $\Sigma ^{+}$ to previously measured Λ baryons is in good agreement with calculations from the Statistical Hadronization Model. The high efficiency and purity of the novel reconstruction method for $\Sigma ^{+}$ presented here will enable future studies of the interaction of $\Sigma ^{+}$ with protons in the context of femtoscopic measurements, which could be crucial for understanding the equation of state of neutron stars.

Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries of Midrapidity Direct Photons and Neutral Mesons at PHENIX

Results are presented for the transverse single-spin asymmetries of direct photons, neutral pions, and eta mesons for |\eta|<0.35 | η | < 0.35 from p^\uparrow + p p ↑ + p collisions with \sqrt{s} = 200 s = 200 GeV at PHENIX. As hadrons, \pi^0 π 0 and \eta η mesons are sensitive to both initial- and final-state effects and at midrapidity probe the dynamics of gluons along with a mix of quark flavors. Because direct photon production does not include hadronization, the direct photon TSSA is only sensitive to initial-state effects and at midrapidity provides a clean probe of the gluon dynamics in transversely polarized protons. All three of these results will help constrain the collinear twist-3 trigluon correlation function as well as the gluon Sivers function, improving our knowledge of spin-dependent gluon dynamics in QCD.

Constraining the nuclear gluon PDF with inclusive hadron production data

The nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) of gluons are known to be difficult to determine with fits of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and Drell-Yan (DY) data alone. Therefore, the nCTEQ15 analysis of nuclear PDFs added inclusive neutral pion production data from RHIC to help in constraining the gluon. In this analysis, we present a new global analysis of nuclear PDFs based on a much larger set of single inclusive light hadron data from RHIC and the LHC. Using our new nCTEQ code (nCTEQ++) with an optimized version of INCNLO we study systematically the limitations of the theory and the impact of the fragmentation function uncertainty.

SBN-BD: O(10 GeV) Proton Beam Dump at Fermilab’s PIP-II Linac

Proton beam dumps are prolific sources of mesons enabling a powerful technique to search for vector mediator coupling of dark matter to neutral pion and higher mass meson decays. By the end of the decade the PIP-II linac will be delivering up to 1 MW of proton power to the FNAL campus. This includes a significant increase of power to the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) which delivers 8 GeV protons to the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) detectors. By building a new dedicated beam dump target station, and using the SBN detectors, a greater than an order of magnitude increase in search sensitivity for dark matter relative to the recent MiniBooNE beam dump search can be achieved. This modest cost upgrade to the BNB would begin testing models of the highly motivated relic density limit predictions and provide novel ways to test explanations of the anomalous excess of low energy events seen by MiniBooNE.

Muon Neutrino Reconstruction at ICARUS with Machine Learning

The ICARUS T600 LArTPC detector successfully ran for three years at the underground LNGS laboratories, providing a first sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous electron neutrino appearance in the CNGS beam. After a significant overhauling at CERN, the T600 detector has been placed in its experimental hall at Fermilab, fully commissioned, and the first events observed with full detector readout. Regular data-taking began in May 2021 with neutrinos from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and neutrinos six degrees off-axis from the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI). Modern developments in machine learning have allowed for the development of an end-to-end machine learning-based event reconstruction for ICARUS data. This reconstruction folds in 3D voxel-level feature extraction using sparse convolutional neural networks and particle clustering using graph neural networks to produce outputs suitable for physics analyses. This poster will summarize the performance of a high-purity and high-efficiency end-to-end machine learning-based selection of muon neutrinos from the BNB and highlight studies of electromagnetic shower reconstruction from a neutral pion selection.
