A Flexible Operation of Distributed Generation in Distribution Networks With Dynamic Boundaries

Distributed generators performing black start to form isolated microgrids offer a flexible and resilient solution to service restoration in distribution systems. Employing the dynamic microgrid concept, distributed generators can form isolated microgrids by changing their physical boundaries through smart switches and conventional circuit breakers. However, the flexibility of distributed generators has not been thoroughly investigated and utilised in existing works. To address this issue, this letter presents a new model to the reconfiguration formulation in active distribution networks considering different operation modes of distributed generators. Compared with the existing models, this study provides a new formulation supporting different DGs' operation modes and fully making use of their flexibility. Illustrative results on IEEE 34-test systems verify the effectiveness of the proposed model.

A self-healing plastic ceramic electrolyte by an aprotic dynamic polymer network for lithium metal batteries

Abstract Oxide ceramic electrolytes (OCEs) have great potential for solid-state lithium metal (Li 0 ) battery applications because, in theory, their high elastic modulus provides better resistance to Li 0 dendrite growth. However, in practice, OCEs can hardly survive critical current densities higher than 1 mA/cm 2 . Key issues that contribute to the breakdown of OCEs include Li 0 penetration promoted by grain boundaries (GBs), uncontrolled side reactions at electrode-OCE interfaces, and, equally importantly, defects evolution (e.g., void growth and crack propagation) that leads to local current concentration and mechanical failure inside and on OCEs. Here, taking advantage of a dynamically crosslinked aprotic polymer with non-covalent –CH 3 ⋯CF 3 bonds, we developed a plastic ceramic electrolyte (PCE) by hybridizing the polymer framework with ionically conductive ceramics. Using in-situ synchrotron X-ray technique and Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM), we uncover that the PCE exhibits self-healing/repairing capability through a two-step dynamic defects removal mechanism. This significantly suppresses the generation of hotspots for Li 0 penetration and chemomechanical degradations, resulting in durability beyond 2000 hours in Li 0 -Li 0 cells at 1 mA/cm 2 . Furthermore, by introducing a polyacrylate buffer layer between PCE and Li 0 -anode, long cycle life >3600 cycles was achieved when paired with a 4.2 V zero-strain cathode, all under near-zero stack pressure.

Dynamic Power Network State Estimation with Asynchronous Measurements

The operation of distribution networks is becoming increasingly volatile, due to fast variations of renewables and, hence, net-loading conditions. To perform a reliable state estimation under these conditions, this paper considers the case where measurements from meters, phasor measurement units, and distributed energy resources are collected and processed in real time to produce estimates of the state at a fast time scale. Streams of measurements collected in real time and at heterogenous rates render the underlying processing asynchronous, and poses severe strains on workhorse state estimation algorithms. In this work, a real-time state estimation algorithm is proposed, where data are processed on the fly. Starting from a regularized least-squares model, and leveraging appropriate linear models, the proposed scheme boils down to a linear dynamical system where the state is updated based on the previous estimate and on the measurement gathered from a few available sensors. The estimation error is shown to be always bounded under mild condition. Numerical simulations are provided to corroborate the analytical findings.

Unifying Energy-Management Problems for Inverter-Based Power Networks

This paper outlines a suite of energy-management problems for inverter-based power networks from the vantage point of optimal control and (non)linear optimization. The problems are categorized based on timescales dictated by the network dynamics, and organized methodologically based on the problem complexity. A growing body of literature has addressed problems in this domain, albeit, with poorly motivated assumptions and behavioral models that obscure precise device behavior. With a combination of circuit- and control-theoretic lenses, we establish appropriate dynamic models for the networked resources, illustrate how common engineering assumptions arise, uncover how problems are linked, and postulate open challenges.

Dynamic Polymer Networks for On Demand Degradable Adhesives, Scaffolds, and Templates (Full Technical Report)

This feasibility study was motivated by a need for alternative mandrel materials to meet the next generation of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) ablator capsules. In response, a new polymer material based on reversible covalent bonds was proposed, with the objective to design thermosets to withstand elevated temperatures (140-200 degrees Celsius) while also being thermally degradable on-demand via controlled decomposition at temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius. A series of cyclopentadiene (Cp) containing thermosets were designed and synthesized to evaluate curing, reversibility and degradability via controlled retro-Diels Alder reactions using Cp-cycloaddition adducts as crosslinks. Ultimately, the current iteration of materials and strategy pursued in this study was assessed as impractical for meeting the needs and objectives of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) target fabrication program.
