Strong Upper-Plate Heterogeneity at the Hikurangi Subduction Margin (North Island, New Zealand) Imaged by Adjoint Tomography

We use earthquake-based adjoint tomography to invert for three-dimensional structure of the North Island, New Zealand, and the adjacent Hikurangi subduction zone. The study area, having a shallow depth to the plate interface below the North Island, offers a rare opportunity for imaging material properties at an active subduction zone using land-based measurements. Starting from an initial model derived using ray tomography, we perform iterative model updates using spectral element and adjoint simulations to fit waveforms with periods ranging from 4–30 s. We perform 28 model updates using an L-BFGS optimization algorithm, improving data fit and introducing P- and S-wave velocity changes of up to ±30%. Resolution analysis using point spread functions show that our measurements are most sensitive to heterogeneities in the upper 30 km. The most striking velocity changes coincide with areas related to the active Hikurangi subduction zone. Lateral velocity structures in the upper 5 km correlate well with New Zealand geology. Here, the inversion reveals increased along-strike heterogeneity on the margin. In Cook Strait we observe a low-velocity zone interpreted as deep sedimentary basins. In the central North Island, low-velocity anomalies are linked to surface geology, and we relate velocity structures at depth to crustal magmatic activity below the Taupō Volcanic Zone.

MPACT Safeguards Modeling: FY25 Update

Sandia National Laboratories develops and maintains several open-source software packages to support material accountancy analyses. This includes the Material Accountancy Performance Indicator Toolkit (MAPIT), the Fissile Facility Flow Modeler (F3M) and the Separation and Safeguards Performance Model Library (SSPM-L). MAPIT is responsible for performing statistical safeguards analyses on bulk and itemized data from nuclear fuel cycle facilities and can operate on real or synthetic data. MAPIT is the only open-source software for such analyses. F3M is a library of modules, built in MATLAB Simulink, that contain pre made blocks to represent different generic fuel cycle processes. These blocks can be used together in a modular fashion to represent and simulate nuclear fuel cycle processes with the goal of improving facility-level accountancy during the design phase. F3M is also an open-source library. Finally, the SSPM-L library is a series of completed models built from F3M. The library includes facility models such as a generic PUREX facility and a fuel fabrication facility. The SSPM-L library is not open source, but is available to collaborators with a relevant use case. These tools include modeling and simulation pipelines to simulate nuclear fuel cycle facilities and the underlying software needed to simulate measurement uncertainty and perform statistical analyses. Together, these tools can perform end-to-end nuclear material accountancy analyses. This report documents the various improvements made to these tools in FY25. Specifically, we added new statistical test, new statistical modeling capabilities, new fuel cycle facility models, and launched a new open-source model component library.

Update on Model Specification Development of Ternary Pumped Storage Technologies [Slides]

T-PSH is an innovative structure of C-PSH that features two turbines, one for pumping and one for generation, replacing the single turbine in C-PSH. These turbines are housed in separate chambers, with an additional set of penstocks connecting the pump turbine to the hydraulic system. This structure enables T-PSH to operate in an HSC mode, allowing for simultaneous pumping and generation, which provides greater operational flexibility compared to C-PSH. To model T-PSH's HSC mode, a user defined turbine and governor system model is required, including the shared penstock model and additional pump turbine model. This specification will focus on the details of the user-defined turbine and governor model, which leverages the HYGOV model.

Comprehensive Analysis of the Neutrino Process in Core-collapsing Supernovae

We investigate the neutrino flavor change effects due to neutrino self-interaction and shock wave propagation, as well as the matter effects on the neutrino process in core-collapsing supernovae (CCSNe). For the hydrodynamics, we use two models: a simple thermal bomb model and a specified hydrodynamics model for SN1987A. For the presupernova model, we take an updated model, adjusted to explain SN1987A, which employs recent developments in the (n, γ) reaction rates for nuclei near the stability line (A ~ 100). As for the neutrino luminosity, we adopt two different models: equivalent neutrino luminosity and nonequivalent luminosity models. The latter is taken from a synthetic analysis of CCSN simulation data, which quantitatively presented the results obtained by various neutrino transport models. Relevant neutrino-induced reaction rates are calculated using a shell model for light nuclei and a quasiparticle random phase approximation model for heavy nuclei. For each model, we present abundances of the light nuclei ( 7 Li, 7 Be, 11 B, and 11 C) and the heavy nuclei ( 92 Nb, 98 Tc, 138 La, and 180 Ta) produced by the neutrino process. The light nuclei abundances turn out to be sensitive to the Mikheyev–Smirnov–Wolfenstein (MSW) region around O-Ne-Mg layer while the heavy nuclei are mainly produced prior to the MSW region. Through detailed analyses, we find that neutrino self-interaction becomes a key ingredient, in addition to the MSW effect, for understanding the neutrino process and the relevant nuclear abundances. The normal mass hierarchy is shown to be more compatible with the meteorite data. The main nuclear reactions for each nucleus are also investigated in detail.

Updated weather model captures subtleties of cold-air pool events

Imagine cold air building up inside a valley or other topographic basin, like a cold swimming pool in the atmosphere. Known in meteorology as cold-air pools, or simply cold pools, these events affect wind plant power production in two key ways. Because they are associated with stagnant air and low winds near the ground, cold pools can severely limit wind energy output over periods of hours to days. Then, when cold pools dissolve, known as cold pool “erosion,” increased wind speeds allow wind power production to recover.

FY2022 Status Update: A Probabilistic Model for Stress Corrosion Cracking of SNF Dry Storage Canisters

Understanding the potential risk of stress corrosion cracking of spent nuclear fuel dry storage canisters has been identified as a knowledge gap for determining the safety of long-term interim storage of spent nuclear fuel. To address this, the DOE is funding a multi-lab DOE effort to understand the timing, occurrence, and consequences of potential canister SCC. Sandia National Laboratories has developed a probabilistic model for canister penetration by SCC. This model has been continuously updated at SNL since 2014. Model uncertainties are treated using a nested loop structure, where the outer loop accounts for uncertainties due to lack of data and the inner aleatoric loop accounts for uncertainties due to variation in nature. By separating uncertainties into these categories, it is possible to focus future work on reducing the most influential epistemic uncertainties. Several experimental studies have already been performed to improve the modeling approach through expanded process understanding and improved model parameterization. The resulting code is physics-based and intended to inform future work by identifying (1) important modeling assumptions, (2) experimental data needs, and (3) necessary model developments. In this document, several of the sub-models in the probabilistic SCC model have been exercised, and the intermediate results, as the model progresses from one sub-model to the next, are presented. Evaluating the sub-models in this manner provides a better understanding of sub-model outputs and has identified several unintended consequences of model assumptions or parameterizations, requiring updates to the modeling approach. The following updates have been made, and future updates have been identified.
