Wind Farm Control and Layout Optimization for U.S. Offshore Wind Farms (Final Report - D5)

This report reviews the results and main conclusions of the NOWRDC project "Wind Farm Control and Layout Optimization for U.S. Offshore Wind Farms." A key finding is that wake steering should be considered a valuable tool for increasing the energy production of wind farms, especially in the event the farms are designed to maximize the energy production of a given boundary area.

HSR transition jump optics in the September 2022 layout

Transition is crossed during acceleration in the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) for all species other than protons. A first-order transition jump scheme manipulates the value of the optical quantity γ T and distorts the optics of the HSR around the time that the beam energy γ beam crosses the nominal transition value γ T 0 . The jump scheme in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) uses 48 jump quads, driven by 12 bi-polar power supplies that each drive 4 quads in series. Ten of those 48 are eliminated in the preliminary September 2022 HSR layout (EIC-HSR-220921a) that was developed from RHIC with no initial regard for transition crossing. This note analyzes the performance of the 38-quad HSR scheme, by comparison with the 48-quad RHIC scheme. It is concerned only with optics – the manipulation and response of Twiss functions and related quantities – and not with beams. This evaluation is a necessary first step before enhancing the transition jump scheme to restore RHIC performance in the HSR. Eventually full beam simulations of transition crossing need to be performed.

A general method for the layout of ailerons and elevators of gliders and motorplanes

A method is described which allows the layout of the spatial driving mechanism of the aileron for a glider or a motorplane to be performed in a systematic manner. In particular, a prescribed input-output behavior of the mechanism can be realized by variation of individual parameters of the spatial four-bar mechanisms which constitute the entire driving mechanism. By means of a sensitivity analysis, a systematic choice of parameters is possible. At the same time the forces acting in the mechanism can be limited by imposing maximum values of the forces as secondary conditions during the variation process.

The PR2D (Place, Route in 2-Dimensions) automatic layout computer program handbook

Place, Route in 2-Dimensions is a standard cell automatic layout computer program for generating large scale integrated/metal oxide semiconductor arrays. The program was utilized successfully for a number of years in both government and private sectors but until now was undocumented. The compilation, loading, and execution of the program on a Sigma V CP-V operating system is described.

Second-generation X/S feedcone: Capabilities layout, and components

High power (20 kW) S and X-band transmitting systems were added to the Second Generation Common Aperture X/S Feedcone System to demonstrate X and S band uplink/downlink capabilities. Design considerations of new X band components, cone layout, and capabilities are discussed.

A laser plotting system for VLSI chip layouts

One of the most time consuming facets of custom Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) design is obtaining hardcopy plots of the mask geometries of cells and chips. The traditional method of generating these plots is to use a multicolor pen plotter. Pen plotters are inherently slow and the plotting speed increases linearly with the number of edges that must be plotted. A moderate custom chip design at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) now consists of more than 200,000 such edges and can take as much as eight hours to plot using a pen plotter. Software is described that was written at JPL to produce similar plots using a laser printer. It is shown that, for rather small layouts, the laser printer can provide nearly instantaneous turnaround. For moderate to large chip designs, the laser printer provides a factor of five or more improvement is speed over pen plotting.

An interactive wire-wrap board layout program

An interactive computer-graphics-based tool for specifying the placement of electronic parts on a wire-wrap circuit board is presented. Input is a data file (currently produced by a commercial logic design system) which describes the parts used and their interconnections. Output includes printed reports describing the parts and wire paths, parts counts, placement lists, board drawing, and a tape to send to the wire-wrap vendor. The program should reduce the engineer's layout time by a factor of 3 to 5 as compared to manual methods.

Perceived orientation, spatial layout and the geometry of pictures

The purpose is to discuss the role of geometry in determining the perception of spatial layout and perceived orientation in pictures viewed at an angle. This discussion derives from Cutting's (1988) suggestion, based on his analysis of some of the author's data (Goldstein, 1987), that the changes in perceived orientation that occur when pictures are viewed at an angle can be explained in terms of geometrically produced changes in the picture's virtual space.

A unified approach to VLSI layout automation and algorithm mapping on processor arrays

Development of software tools for designing supercomputing systems is highly complex and cost ineffective. To tackle this a special purpose PAcube silicon compiler which integrates different design levels from cell to processor arrays has been proposed. As a part of this, we present in this paper a novel methodology which unifies the problems of Layout Automation and Algorithm Mapping.

Luminaire layout: Design and implementation

The information contained in this report was presented during the discussion regarding guidelines for PAR uniformity in greenhouses. The data shows a lighting uniformity analysis in a research greenhouse for rose production at the Cornell University campus. The luminaire layout was designed using the computer program Lumen-Micro. After implementation of the design, accurate measurements were taken in the greenhouse and the uniformity analysis for both the design and implementation were compared. A study of several supplemental lighting installations resulted in the following recommendations: include only the actual growing area in the lighting uniformity analysis; for growing areas up to 20 square meters, take four measurements per square meter; for growing areas above 20 square meters, take one measurement per square meter; use one of the uniformity criteria and frequency graphs to compare lighting uniformity amongst designs; and design for uniformity criterion of a least 0.75 and the fraction within +/- 15% of the average PAR value should be close to one.

Human factors issues and approaches in the spatial layout of a space station control room, including the use of virtual reality as a design analysis tool

Human Factors Engineering support was provided for the 30% design review of the late Space Station Freedom Payload Control Area (PCA). The PCA was to be the payload operations control room, analogous to the Spacelab Payload Operations Control Center (POCC). This effort began with a systematic collection and refinement of the relevant requirements driving the spatial layout of the consoles and PCA. This information was used as input for specialized human factors analytical tools and techniques in the design and design analysis activities. Design concepts and configuration options were developed and reviewed using sketches, 2-D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings, and immersive Virtual Reality (VR) mockups.
