IK-Frag: Frag data generator for the PHITS simulation with the inverse kinematic reaction producing a focused neutron beam

IK-Frag has been developed for the creation of the nuclear cross-section data format, which is named frag data and can be used in PHITS, a Monte Carlo simulation code. IK-Frag focuses on the inverse kinematic reactions between a lithium or beryllium ion and a proton target. These reactions achieve naturally collimated neutrons and potentially reduce the necessity of radiation shielding. IK-Frag enables PHITS users to conduct simulations for the inverse kinematic reactions. The present software aims to contribute to future development of the neutron source system using the inverse kinematic reactions.

On the statistical theory of self-gravitating collisionless dark matter flow: High order kinematic and dynamic relations

Dark matter, if it exists, accounts for five times as much as ordinary baryonic matter. To better understand the self-gravitating collisionless dark matter flow on different scales, a statistical theory involving kinematic and dynamic relations must be developed for different types of flow, e.g., incompressible, constant divergence, and irrotational flow. This is mathematically challenging because of the intrinsic complexity of dark matter flow and the lack of a self-closed description of flow velocity. Here, this paper extends our previous work on second-order statistics Xu to kinematic relations of any order for any type of flow. Dynamic relations were also developed to relate statistical measures of different orders. The results were validated by N-body simulations. On large scales, we found that (i) third-order velocity correlations can be related to density correlation or pairwise velocity; (ii) the pth-order velocity correlations follow ∝ a (p+2)/2 for odd p and ∝ a p/2 for even p, where a is the scale factor; (iii) the overdensity δ is proportional to density correlation on the same scale, $\langle$δ$\rangle$∝$\langle$δδ'$\rangle$; (iv) velocity dispersion on a given scale r is proportional to the overdensity on the same scale. On small scales, (i) a self-closed velocity evolution is developed by decomposing the velocity into motion in haloes and motion of haloes; (ii) the evolution of vorticity and enstrophy are derived from the evolution of velocity; (iii) dynamic relations are derived to relate second- and third-order correlations; (iv) while the first moment of pairwise velocity follows $\langle$Δu L $\rangle$=-Har (H is the Hubble parameter), the third moment follows $\langle$(Δu L ) 3 $\rangle$ ∝ ε u ar that can be directly compared with simulations and observations, where ε u ≈ 10 -7 m 2 /s 3 is the constant rate for energy cascade; (v) the pth order velocity correlations follow ∝ a (3p-5)/4 for odd p and ∝ a 3p/4 for even p. Finally, the combined kinematic and dynamic relations lead to exponential and one-fourth power-law velocity correlations on large and small scales, respectively.

Unveiling the star formation history of the Upper Scorpius association through its kinematics

ABSTRACT Stellar associations can be discerned as overdensities of sources not only in the physical space but also in the velocity space. The common motion of their members, gradually eroded by the galactic tidal field, is partially reminiscent of the initial kinematic structure. Using recent data from Gaia EDR3, combined with radial velocities from GALAH and APOGEE, we traced back the present positions of stars belonging to Upper Scorpius (USCO), a subgroup of Scorpius–Centaurus, the nearest OB association. About one half of the subgroup (the ‘clustered’ population) appears composed of many smaller entities, which were in a more compact configuration in the past. The presence of a kinematic duality is reflected into an age spread between this younger clustered population and an older diffuse population, in turn confirmed by a different fraction fD of disc-bearing stars (fD = 0.24 ± 0.02 versus fD = 0.10 ± 0.01). Star formation in USCO appears to have lasted more than 10 Myr and proceeded in small groups that, after a few Myr, dissolve in the field of the older population but retain for some time memory of their initial structure. The difference of ages inferred through isochrones and kinematics, in this regard, could provide a powerful tool to quantify the time-scale of gas removal.

What drives galaxy quenching? A deep connection between galaxy kinematics and quenching in the local Universe

ABSTRACT We develop a 2D inclined rotating disc model, which we apply to the stellar velocity maps of 1862 galaxies taken from the MaNGA survey (SDSS public Data Release 15) . We use a random forest classifier to identify the kinematic parameters that are most connected to galaxy quenching. We find that kinematic parameters that relate predominantly to the disc (such as the mean rotational velocity) and parameters that characterize whether a galaxy is rotation- or dispersion-dominated (such as the ratio of rotational velocity to velocity dispersion) are not fundamentally linked to the quenching of star formation. Instead, we find overwhelmingly that it is the absolute level of velocity dispersion (a property that relates primarily to a galaxy’s bulge/spheroidal component) that is most important for separating star-forming and quenched galaxies. Furthermore, a partial correlation analysis shows that many commonly discussed correlations between galaxy properties and quenching are spurious, and that the fundamental correlation is between quenching and velocity dispersion. In particular, we find that at fixed velocity dispersion, there is only a very weak dependence of quenching on the disc properties, whereby more discy galaxies are slightly more likely to be forming stars. By invoking the tight relationship between black hole mass and velocity dispersion, and noting that black hole mass traces the total energy released by active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we argue that these data support a scenario in which quenching occurs by preventive feedback from AGNs. The kinematic measurements from this work are publicly available.

Kinematics of a Cable-Driven Robotic Platform for Large-Scale Additive Manufacturing

Concrete additive manufacturing (AM) is a growing field of research. However, on-site, large-scale concrete additive manufacturing requires motion platforms that are difficult to implement with conventional rigid-link robotic systems. This article presents a new kinematic arrangement for a deployable cable-driven robot intended for on-site AM. The kinematics of this robot are examined to determine if they meet the requirements for this application, the wrench feasible workspace (WFW) is examined, and the physical implementation of a prototype is also presented. Data collected from the physical implementation of the proposed system are analyzed, and the results support its suitability for the intended application. The success of this system demonstrates that this kinematic arrangement is promising for future deployable AM systems.

Evidence for Impact of Galaxy Mergers on Stellar Kinematics of Early-type Galaxies

We provide observational evidence that galaxy mergers significantly affect stellar kinematics of early-type galaxies (ETGs) such as specific stellar angular momentum within the half-light radius (${\lambda }_{{R}_{e}}$) and kinematic misalignment (ψ mis ), using MaNGA integral field unit spectroscopic data that are in the Stripe 82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In this study, tidal features around ETGs, which are detected in deep coadded images, are used as direct evidence for mergers that occurred recently. In the case of ETGs that do not have dust lanes, ${\lambda }_{{R}_{e}}$ is lower in ETGs with tidal features than in those without tidal features (median ${\lambda }_{{R}_{e}}$: 0.21 versus 0.39) in all stellar mass and Sérsic index ranges except the most massive bin, so that the fraction of ETGs with tidal features in slow rotators is more than twice as large as that in fast rotators (42% versus 18%). Moreover, ETGs with tidal features have larger ψ mis than those without tidal features (mean ψ mis : 28° versus 15°). By contrast, ETGs with dust lanes are fast rotators, and ETGs with both dust lanes and tidal features have the highest ${\lambda }_{{R}_{e}}$ (median ${\lambda }_{{R}_{e}}$: 0.59) among all ETG categories. In addition, ETGs with dust lanes have small ψ mis regardless of the existence of tidal features (Ψ mis <7$^{°}_{.}$5). Our results can be explained if mergers with different gas fractions generate merger remnants that have different kinematic properties.

Forecasts on the Dark Matter Density Profiles of Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies with Current and Future Kinematic Observations

We forecast parameter uncertainties on the mass profile of a typical Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) using the spherical Jeans equation and Fisher matrix formalism. For a Draco-like system we show that radial velocity measurements for 1000 individual stars can constrain the mass contained within the effective radius of a dSph to within 5%. This is consistent with constraints extracted from current observational data. We compare two systems, a cusp and core, and demonstrate that a minimum sample of 100,000 (10,000) stars with both radial and proper motions measurements is required to disentangle their inner slopes at the 2σ (1σ) level. If using the log-slope measured at the half-light radius as a proxy for differentiating between a core or cusp slope, only 1000 line-of-sight and proper motions measurements are required; however, we show this choice of radius does not always unambiguously differentiate between core and cusped profiles. Once observational errors are below half the value of the intrinsic dispersion, improving the observational precision yields little change in the density profile uncertainties. The choice of priors in our profile shape analysis plays a crucial role when the number of stars in a system is less than 100 but does not affect the resulting uncertainties for larger kinematic samples. Our predicted 2D confidence regions agree well with those from a full likelihood analysis run on a mock kinematic data set taken from the Gaia Challenge, validating our Fisher predictions. Our methodology is flexible, allowing us to predict density profile uncertainties for a wide range of current and future kinematic data sets.

On-shell correlators and color-kinematics duality in curved symmetric spacetimes

We define a perturbatively calculable quantity — the on-shell correlator — which furnishes a unified description of particle dynamics in curved spacetime. Specializing to the case of flat and anti-de Sitter space, on-shell correlators coincide precisely with on-shell scattering amplitudes and boundary correlators, respectively. Remarkably, we find that symmetric manifolds admit a generalization of on-shell kinematics in which the corresponding momenta are literally the isometry generators of the spacetime acting on the external kinematic data. These isometric momenta are intrinsically non-commutative but exhibit on-shell conditions that are identical to those of flat space, thus providing a common language for computing and representing on-shell correlators which is agnostic about the underlying geometry. Afterwards, we compute tree-level on-shell correlators for biadjoint scalar (BAS) theory and the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and learn that color-kinematics duality is manifested at the level of fields under a mapping of the color algebra to the algebra of gauged isometries on the spacetime manifold. Last but not least, we present a field theoretic derivation of the fundamental BCJ relations for on-shell correlators following from the existence of certain conserved currents in BAS theory and the NLSM.

Algebraic branch points at all loop orders from positive kinematics and wall crossing

A bstract There is a remarkable connection between the boundary structure of the positive kinematic region and branch points of integrated amplitudes in planar $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM. A long-standing question has been precisely how algebraic branch points emerge from this picture. We use wall crossing and scattering diagrams to systematically study the boundary structure of the positive kinematic regions associated with MHV amplitudes. The notion of asymptotic chambers in the scattering diagram naturally explains the appearance of algebraic branch points. Furthermore, the scattering diagram construction also motivates a new coordinate system for kinematic space that rationalizes the relations between algebraic letters in the symbol alphabet. As a direct application, we conjecture a complete list of all algebraic letters that could appear in the symbol alphabet of the 8-point MHV amplitude.

The importance of kinematic twists and genuine saturation effects in dijet production at the Electron-Ion Collider

We compute the differential yield for quark anti-quark dijet production in high-energy electron-proton and electron-nucleus collisions at small x as a function of the relative momentum P ⊥ and momentum imbalance k ⊥ of the dijet system for different photon virtualities Q 2 , and study the elliptic and quadrangular anisotropies in the relative angle between P ⊥ and k ⊥ . We review and extend the analysis in [1], which compared the results of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) with those obtained using the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. In particular, we include in our comparison the improved TMD (ITMD) framework, which resums kinematic power corrections of the ratio k ⊥ over the hard scale Q ⊥ . By comparing ITMD and CGC results we are able to isolate genuine higher saturation contributions in the ratio Q s /Q ⊥ which are resummed only in the CGC. These saturation contributions are in addition to those in the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon TMD that appear in powers of Q s /k ⊥ . We provide numerical estimates of these contributions for inclusive dijet production at the future Electron-Ion Collider, and identify kinematic windows where they can become relevant in the measurement of dijet and dihadron azimuthal correlations. We argue that such measurements will allow the detailed experimental study of both kinematic power corrections and genuine gluon saturation effects.

From observation to replication: machine-learning-driven quantification and replication of fine-scale fish kinematics and behavior

Long-term quantification of fish behavior is essential for aquatic ecology, wildlife telemetry, and biomechanical device development. However, the observation duration required to obtain reliable behavioral and kinematic metrics remains unclear, and few tools exist to physically reproduce natural swimming motion for controlled experimentation. We address these challenges by developing a generalizable framework that models behavioral reliability (Spearman–Brown reliability index) as a function of observation duration and derives metric-specific monitoring thresholds. Using juvenile white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) as a case study, we demonstrate that the minimum duration needed for reliable estimates varies substantially across kinematic features: to exceed a reliability of 0.8, total distance traveled requires 12 days, average curvature (mm?¹) 15 days, tail-beat frequency (Hz) 8 days, and average speed (body length/s) 17 days. We further bridge digital analysis and physical testing by developing a hardware-in-the-loop simulator that reconstructs machine-learning-derived swimming kinematics with high fidelity (correlation coefficient 0.98–0.99, RMSE 1.22–1.27 mm over a 5-minute segment). This platform enables realistic, repeatable motion stimuli for evaluating aquatic sensing technologies and bio-integrated devices under controlled conditions. Together, these contributions provide a scalable approach for designing long-term behavioral studies and a data-driven connection between ecological observation and robotic experimentation.

Reconstructing the kinematics of deep inelastic scattering with deep learning

We introduce a method to reconstruct the kinematics of neutral-current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) using a deep neural network (DNN). Unlike traditional methods, it exploits the full kinematic information of both the scattered electron and the hadronic-final state, and it accounts for QED radiation by identifying events with radiated photons and event-level momentum imbalance. The method is studied with simulated events at HERA and the future Electron–Ion Collider (EIC). We show that the DNN method outperforms all the traditional methods over the full phase space, improving resolution and reducing bias. Our method has the potential to extend the kinematic reach of future experiments at the EIC, and thus their discovery potential in polarized and nuclear DIS.

Combining cross-pivot flexures to generate improved kinematically equivalent flexure systems

In this work, we show that new kinematic equivalents with improved performance of standard flexure elements can be systematically synthesized by combination of cross-pivot flexures. Cross-pivot flexures provide a unique feature of kinematic stability under both high loading and large displacement conditions which can be exploited to synthesize a range of kinematic equivalents to standard flexure elements which retain much greater stiffness, load capacity and range capacity than the traditional elements. Cross-pivot synthetic elements provide a means to expand the performance of a large range of flexure-based structures including motion stages, manufacturing equipment and optical systems. This could result in better data collection, smaller systems, and less distortion in operation.

Mapping the Perseus galaxy cluster with XRISM: Gas kinematic features and their implications for turbulence

We present extended gas kinematic maps of the Perseus cluster based on a combination of five new XRISM/Resolve pointings observed in 2025 with four performance verification datasets from 2024, totaling a net exposure of 745 ks. To date, Perseus remains the only cluster that has been extensively mapped out to ≃0.7 r 2500 by XRISM/Resolve, while simultaneously offering sufficient spatial resolution to resolve gaseous substructures driven by mergers and active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. Our observations cover multiple radial directions and a broad range of dynamical scales, enabling us to characterize the kinematic properties of the intracluster medium up to a scale of ∼500 kpc. In the measurements, we detected high-velocity dispersions (≃300km s −1 ) in the eastern region of the cluster that are spatially coincident with the extended X-ray surface brightness excess and correspond to a nonthermal pressure fraction of ≃7 − 13%. The velocity field outside the AGN-dominant region can be effectively described by a single, large-scale kinematic driver based on the velocity structure function, which statistically favors an energy injection scale of at least a few hundred kpc. The estimated turbulent dissipation energy is comparable to the gravitational potential energy released by a recent merger, implying a significant role of turbulent cascade in the merger energy conversion. In the bulk velocity field, we observed a dipole-like pattern along the east-west direction with an amplitude of ≃ ± 200 − 300 km s −1 , indicating rotational motions induced by the recent merger event. This feature constrains the viewing direction to ≃30° −50° relative to the normal of the merger plane. Our hydrodynamic simulations suggest that Perseus has experienced at least two energetic mergers since redshift z ∼ 1, the most recent of which is associated with the radio galaxy IC310, in agreement with recent SRG/eROSITA findings. This study showcases exciting scientific opportunities for future missions with high-resolution spectroscopic capabilities (e.g., HUBS, LEM, and NewAthena).

SHαDE: survey description and mass–kinematics scaling relations for dwarf galaxies

ABSTRACT The Study of H α from Dwarf Emissions (SHαDE) is a high spectral resolution (R = 13 500) H α integral field survey of 69 dwarf galaxies with stellar masses 106 < M⋆ < 109 M⊙. The survey used FLAMES on the ESO Very Large Telescope. SHαDE is designed to study the kinematics and stellar populations of dwarf galaxies using consistent methods applied to massive galaxies and at matching level of detail, connecting these mass ranges in an unbiased way. In this paper, we set out the science goals of SHαDE, describe the sample properties, outline the data reduction, and analysis processes. We investigate the log M⋆–log S0.5 mass–kinematics scaling relation, which has previously shown potential for combining galaxies of all morphologies in a single scaling relation. We extend the scaling relation from massive galaxies to dwarf galaxies, demonstrating this relation is linear down to a stellar mass of M⋆ ∼ 108.6 M⊙. Below this limit, the kinematics of galaxies inside one effective radius appears to be dominated by the internal velocity dispersion limit of the H α-emitting gas, giving a bend in the log M⋆–log S0.5 relation. Replacing stellar mass with total baryonic mass using gas mass estimate reduces the severity but does not remove the linearity limit of the scaling relation. An extrapolation to estimate the galaxies’ dark matter halo masses, yields a log Mh–log S0.5 scaling relation that is free of any bend, has reduced curvature over the whole mass range, and brings galaxies of all masses and morphologies on to the virial relation.

Different higher order kinematics between star-forming and quiescent galaxies based on the SAMI, MAGPI, and LEGA-C surveys

We present the first statistical study of spatially integrated non-Gaussian stellar kinematics spanning 7 Gyr in cosmic time. We use deep, rest-frame optical spectroscopy of massive galaxies (stellar mass $M_\star \gt 10^{10.5} \, \mathrm{M_\odot }$) at redshifts z = 0.05, 0.3, and 0.8 from the SAMI, MAGPI, and LEGA-C surveys, to measure the excess kurtosis h 4 of the stellar velocity distribution, the latter parametrized as a Gauss–Hermite series. We find that at all redshifts where we have large enough samples, h 4 anticorrelates with the ratio between rotation and dispersion, highlighting the physical connection between these two kinematic observables. In addition, and independently from the anticorrelation with rotation-to-dispersion ratio, we also find a correlation between h 4 and M ⋆ , potentially connected to the assembly history of galaxies. In contrast, after controlling for mass, we find no evidence of independent correlation between h 4 and aperture velocity dispersion or galaxy size. These results hold for both star-forming and quiescent galaxies. For quiescent galaxies, h 4 also correlates with projected shape, even after controlling for the rotation-to-dispersion ratio. At any given redshift, star-forming galaxies have lower h 4 compared to quiescent galaxies, highlighting the link between kinematic structure and star-forming activity.

Kinematic Flow and the Emergence of Time

Perhaps the most basic question we can ask about cosmological correlations is how their strength changes as we smoothly vary kinematic parameters. The answer is encoded in differential equations that govern this evolution in kinematic space. In this Letter, we introduce a new perspective on these differential equations. We show that, in the simplified setting of conformally coupled scalars in power-law Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes, the equations for arbitrary tree-level processes can be obtained from a small number of simple combinatorial rules. While this “kinematic flow” is defined purely in terms of boundary data, it reflects the physics of bulk time evolution. The unexpected regularity of the equations suggests the existence of an autonomously defined mathematical structure from which cosmological correlations and the time evolution of the associated spacetime emerge.

Entire four-graviton EFT from the duality between color and kinematics

The Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) double-copy construction reveals a fundamental structural connection between gauge and gravity theories. At its core, the BCJ double copy is directly due to a duality between the algebraic relations of a color root and those of a kinematic root. We generalize this principle beyond the conventional Lie algebra structure of tree-level Yang-Mills theory. By demanding color-kinematics duality for the complete basis of four-point color structures—including those involving the symmetric 𝑑 𝑎⁢𝑏⁢𝑐 constants—we define the universal double copy. We systematically classify the bases of all such parity-even generalized gauge-theory numerators and, independently, the space of all parity-even four-graviton higher-derivative operators. We demonstrate that our universal double-copy construction precisely spans the entire tower of parity-even four-graviton amplitudes in any dimension, except for the Lovelock 𝑅 3 contribution in 𝐷 > 6 which we can express in terms of a particularly simple universal triple-copy involving gauge theories coupled to scalars. Explicit machine-readable expressions for the complete basis of gauge-theory numerators and fundamental gravitational building blocks are provided in the Supplemental Material. This establishes that all possible four-point gravitational interactions can be factorized into products of gauge-theory building blocks governed by this universal notion of color-kinematics duality.
