Thermal battery cost scaling analysis: minimizing the cost per kW h

Thermal and cost-scaling analyses provide the tools to optimize the geometry of thermal batteries based on cost. Figures-of-merit comprised of storage material properties are derived as the quantities that should be maximized when different components dominate cost.

20-kW Bi-directional Wireless Power Transfer System with Energy Storage System Connectivity

The severity of the economic impact caused by grid outages has been the driving factor for creating innovative solutions that increases interest for the deployment of distributed energy resources to reduce the impact of grid outages. This study presents a novel way of providing export power using bi-directional wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for ac grid side power and mobile energy storage systems (ESSs) connectivity. The proposed concept here interfaces the EV batteries to the AC grid and also can redirect the power from the stationary ESS to grid, to EV batteries, or both simultaneously; providing the capabilities of an uninterrupted power supply (UPS). Results demonstrate the performance and the functionality of the system with overall efficiencies 93% to 97%, depending on the operating mode.

3.5 kW/in3 Planar Coupled Inductor Design and Optimization for a 50 kW 3-level Four-Switch Buck-Boost (3L-FSBB) Converter

Planar magnetics design has been widely used in power electronics field because of the low profile, ease of manufacturability, and high power density. This paper first proposes a 3-level four-switch buck-boost (3L-FSBB) converter for the dc-dc applications where the zero common-mode (CM) voltage emissions, step-up and step-down are all required. With the consideration of power density, efficiency, and cost, a 15oz heavy copper coupled inductor for 3-level FSBB converter was designed and optimized with the low-cost commercial core and planar windings. According to the soft-switching quadrangle modulation for 3-L FSBB, the turns number and stacked core number are optimized first. And then, a two-board design is proposed to reduce the fringing effect and improve the thermal performance. Finally, a 75 kVA two-stage ac-dc-dc converter including a 3-level FSBB converter was built to verify the electrical design.

Design of a 100 kW Surface Permanent Magnet Machine with Wide Constant Power Speed Ratio for Traction Applications

Surface permanent magnet (SPM) machines are considered to be strong candidates for traction applications due to their high power density and high efficiency. By adopting fractional-slot concentrated windings, SPM machines can achieve a wide constant power speed range. A carbon fiber sleeve is applied to ensure the retainment of the magnets at high speed operating conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present the design of a high speed SPM machine for traction applications with 25 kW/Liter active power density and a wide constant-power speed range that is consistent with guidelines and targets presented in the Electrical and Electronics Technical Team Roadmap published by the US Department of Energy. The predicted electromagnetic performance and structural characteristics are presented based on both analytical and FEA results.

Design of High Power Density 100 kW Surface Permanent Magnet Machine with No Heavy Rare Earth Material Using Current Source Inverter for Traction Application

Surface permanent magnet (SPM) machines are appealing candidates for traction applications because of high power density and high efficiency. Rare-earth magnets deliver high performance but raise concerns about material supply dependability, particularly if they use heavy rare-earth materials. This paper presents the design of a high-performance SPM machine without any heavy rare-earth material that is optimized specifically for a current-source inverter (CSI) traction drive. This machine is designed for a constant-power speed ratio (CPSR) of 3. A genetic algorithm has been performed to achieve a target of 50 kW/L active power density at speeds up to 20,000 rpm. Operation at a peak line-to-line voltage of 800 V can be achieved using 1200 V power devices with a safety margin. The predicted electromagnetic and rotor structural performance characteristics are presented using both analytical and finite element analysis (FEA) results.

A PCB-Embedded 1.2 kV SiC MOSFET Half-Bridge Package for a 22 kW AC–DC Converter

This article presents the design and analysis of a double-side-cooled printed circuit board (PCB) embedded silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET half-bridge package with low loop inductances and an integrated gate driver. The 1.2 kV SiC MOSFET dies used in the half-bridge package are embedded in the PCB using AT&S's patented technique. The dies are cooled and electrically connected to traces in the PCB through copper-filled microvias. The design methodology accounts for both electrical and thermal performance, limiting the power-loop inductance to 2.3 nH and the maximum package temperature to less than the 175 °C limit. The integration of the gate drive circuitry allows for a high power density and 2.2 nH gate-loop inductances. At 0.12 K/W, the measured junction-to-case thermal resistance with double-sided cooling is 57% lower than that of a TO-247 package. Under similar operating conditions, the PCB-embedded half-bridge package also achieves a 5.6 times lower voltage overshoot and a 0.5% higher peak efficiency than a TO-247-based half-bridge. This article reports the first demonstration of PCB-embedded 1.2 kV SiC MOSFET packages in buck, boost, and ac–dc converters. Furthermore, the prototype three-phase ac–dc converter for an electric vehicle on-board charger is composed of six PCB-embedded half-bridge packages and achieves an efficiency of 98.2% and a power density of 182 W/in 3 .
