Pioneer Venus large probe neutral mass spectrometer

The Pioneer Venus large probe neutral mass spectrometer (LNMS) uses a single focusing magnetic sector field mass analyzer with mass range of 1-208 amu, resolution sufficient to separate the mercury isotopes, and sensitivity sufficient to detect minor constituents in the 1 ppm range relative to the CO2 in the Venus atmosphere. A combination of ion and chemical pumping is used to maintain a vacuum in the mass analyzer and to remove the atmosphere gases which enter the ion source chamber through a special leak. A microprocessor controls the operation of the instrument through a highly efficient peak stepping and data compression program, permitting acquisition of a complete mass spectrum roughly once each minute.

Laboratory corroboration of the Pioneer Venus gas chromatograph analyses

Laboratory simulation and tests of the inlet sampling system and columns of the Pioneer Venus gas chromatograph show that the sensitivity to argon is not diminished after the column regeneration step, that argon isotopes are not separated, that oxygen and sulfur dioxide are not produced in the inlet sampling system from sulfur trioxide, and that sulfur trioxide is not formed from sulfur dioxide and oxygen. Comparisons of the volatile inventory of Venus and earth imply similar efficiencies of early outgassing but a lower efficiency for later outgassing in the case of Venus. The high oxidation state of the Venus atmosphere in the region of cloud formation may prohibit the generation of elemental sulfur particles.

Solar cycle variations of anomalous He-4 as deduced by studies of cosmic ray He-3

Voyager 1 and 2 observations have been used to derive the energy spectrum of 'anomalous' cosmic-ray (ACR) He using a technique based on the separation of the isotopes of He. Previously reported observations show that the ACR oxygen spectrum underwent a change in shape following the solar magnetic field reversal in 1980; in this paper evidence for a corresponding change in the ACR He spectrum is presented. It is found that the energy spectra of ACR He and oxygen and Galactic-cosmic-ray He-4 and He3 can be reproduced both before and after the field reversal using a simple solar modulation model in which the effects of curvature and gradient drifts are arbitrarily neglected.

Classificational parameters for acapulcoites and lodranites: The cases of FRO 90011, EET 84302 and ALH A81187/84190

Acapulcoites and lodranites probably sample a common parent body, which has experienced a range of partial melting. We present classificational parameters which allow acapulcoites-lodranites to be distinguished from other groups of meteorites, as well as from each other. Petrography can complement oxygen isotopic compositions in separating these meteorites from other groups of stony-irons and primitive achondrites, while petrographic properties alone distinguish acapulcoites from lodranites. Acapulcoites differ from lodranites in having smaller grain sizes, abundant Fe, Ni-FeS as micron-sized veins and plagioclase which escaped melting. We have applied these criteria to three new members of the group. FRO 90011 is a typical lodranite; EET 84302 is intermediate in many properties between acapulcoites and lodranites; and ALH A81187/84190 are paired meteorites and are first low-FeO acapulcoites. These meteorites provide a wider spectrum of samples from the acapulcoite-lodranite parent body and suggests that this body may have had a complex structure.

The Petrology and Geochemistry of Feldspathic Granulitic Breccia NWA 3163: Implications for the Lunar Crust

Lunar meteorites are crucial to understand the Moon s geological history because, being samples of the lunar crust that have been ejected by random impact events, they potentially originate from areas outside the small regions of the lunar surface sampled by the Apollo and Luna missions. The Apollo and Luna sample sites are contained within the Procellarum KREEP Terrain (PKT, Jolliff et al., 2000), where KREEP refers to potassium, rare earth element, and phosphorus-rich lithologies. The KREEP-rich rocks in the PKT are thought to be derived from late-stage residual liquids after approx.95-99% crystallization of a lunar magma ocean (LMO). These are understood to represent late-stage liquids which were enriched in incompatible trace elements (ITE) relative to older rocks (Snyder et al., 1992). As a consequence, the PKT is a significant reservoir for Th and KREEP. However, the majority of the lunar surface is likely to be significantly more depleted in ITE (84%, Jolliff et al., 2000). Lunar meteorites that are low in KREEP and Th may thus sample regions distinct from the PKT and are therefore a valuable source of information regarding the composition of KREEP-poor lunar crust. Northwest Africa (NWA) 3163 is a thermally metamorphosed ferroan, feldspathic, granulitic breccia composed of igneous clasts with a bulk anorthositic, noritic bulk composition. It is relatively mafic (approx.5.8 wt.% FeO; approx.5 wt.% MgO) and has some of the lowest concentrations of ITEs (17ppm Ba) compared to the feldspathic lunar meteorite (FLM) and Apollo sample suites (Hudgins et al., 2011). Localized plagioclase melting and incipient melting of mafic minerals require localized peak shock pressures in excess of 45 GPa (Chen and El Goresy, 2000; Hiesinger and Head, 2006). NWA 3163, and paired samples NWA 4481 and 4883, have previously been interpreted to represent an annealed micro-breccia which was produced by burial metamorphism at depth in the ancient lunar crust (Fernandes et al., 2009). This is in contrast to the interpretation of Hudgins et al. (2009) where NWA 3163 was interpreted to have formed through contact metamorphism. To further constrain its origin, we examine the petrogenesis of NWA 3163 with a particular emphasis on in-situ measurement of trace elements within constituent minerals, Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic systematics on separated mineral fractions and petrogenetic modeling.

Constraints on the Composition and Evolution of the Lunar Crust from Meteorite NWA 3163

The lunar meteorite NWA 3163 (paired with NWA 4881, 4483) is a ferroan, feldspathic granulitic breccia characterized by pigeonite, augite, olivine, maskelynite and accessory Tichromite, ilmenite and troilite. Bulk rock geochemical signatures indicate the lack of a KREEP- derived component (Eu/Eu* = 3.47), consistent with previously studied lunar granulites and anorthosites. Bulk rock chondrite-normalized signatures are however distinct from the anorthosites and granulites sampled by Apollo missions and are relatively REE-depleted. In-situ analyses of maskelynite reveal little variation in anorthite content (average An% is 96.9 +/- 1.6, 2 sigma). Olivine is relatively ferroan and exhibits very little variation in forsterite content with mean Fo% of 57.7 +/- 2.0 (2 sigma). The majority of pyroxene is low-Ca pigeonite (En57Fs33Wo10). Augite (En46Fs21Wo33) is less common, comprising approximately 10% of analyzed pyroxene. Two pyroxene thermometry on co-existing orthopyroxene and augite yield an equilibrium temperature of 1070C which is in reasonable agreement with temperatures of 1096C estimated from pigeonite compositions. Rb-Sr isotopic systematics of separated fractions yield an average measured Sr-87/Sr-87 of 0.699282+/-0.000007 (2 sigma). Sr model ages are calculated using a modern day Sr-87/Sr-86 Basaltic Achondrite Best Initial (BABI) value of 0.70475, from an initial BABI value Sr-87/Sr-86 of 0.69891 and a corresponding Rb-87/Sr-97 of 0.08716. The Sr model Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) age, which represents the time of separation of a melt from a source reservoir having chondritic evolution, is 4.56+/-0.1 Ga. A Sr model T(sub RD) age, which is a Rb depletion age and assumes no contribution from Rb in the sample in the calculation, yields 4.34+/-0.1 Ga (i.e. a minimum age). The Ar-Ar dating of paired meteorite NWA 4881 reveals an age of c. 2 Ga, likely representing the last thermal event this meteorite experienced. An older Ar-40/Ar-39 age of c. 3.5 Ga may record the thermal event which produced the granulitic texture. Additional chronological constraints will be provided by Sm-Nd systematics. Ferroan Anorthosites like NWA 3163 have been interpreted to represent direct lunar magma ocean (LMO) crystallization products. If this is the case, trace element concentrations in NWA 3163 primary mineral phases should be in equilibrium with residual LMO liquids present during crystallization of those phases. Results from petrogenetic modeling suggest that the NWA 3163 protolith did not form from crystallization of an initially LREE depleted LMO but rather require an initially chondritic LMO with early garnet crystallization. Furthermore, a two-stage crystallization model where plagioclase crystalized prior to pyroxene (93% vs. 99.5% of LMO crystallization) is implied.

Apparatus for extraction and separation of a preferentially photo-dissociated molecular isotope into positive and negative ions by means of an electric field

Molecules of one and the same isotope were preferentially photodissociated by a laser and an ultraviolet source, or by multiphoton absorption of laser radiation. The resultant ions were confined with a magnetic field, moved in opposite directions by an electric field, extracted from the photodissociation region by means of screening and accelerating grids, and collected in ducts.

Episodic mantle differentiation - Nd and Sr isotopic evidence

A study of Nd and Sr isotopic composition of clinopyroxenes separated from two hydrous and four anhydrous ultramafic nodules is presented. Correlation of Nd-143/Nd-144 with Sm/Nd suggests that a second partial melting occurred about 560 m.y. ago resulting in LREE enrichment of a part of the anhydrous mantle. The isotopic data for anhydrous nodules show that oceanic type mantle underlies at some continental areas. It is concluded that the separation of subcontinental mantle regions from an initially chondritic reservoir may occur in discrete episodes, and that different histories of depletion and/or enrichment will produce isotopically distinct mantle reservoirs.

Re-Os Systematics and HSE Distribution in Metal from Ochansk (H4) Chondrite

Previous studies of the Re-Os systematics of chondrites have documented considerable variation in the Re/Os ratios of whole rock samples. For some whole rock chondrites, Re-Os systematics display large deviations from the primitive isochron that are considerably larger than deviations in other isotope systems. Possible interpretation of these facts is that the Re-Os system in chondrites is particularly sensitive to post-formation alteration processes, thus providing a useful tool to examine such processes. Significant variations that have been detected in highly siderophile element (HSE) patterns for ordinary chondrites support this conclusion. We report Re-Os isotope data for metal separates from the Ochansk H4 chondrite coupled with abundance data for Ru, Pd, Ir, and Pt, determined in the same samples by isotope dilution. We chose this meteorite mainly because it is an observed fall with minimal signs of weathering, and its low metamorphic grade (H4) and shock stage (S3).

Oxygen isotopes implanted in the LDEF spacecraft

Secondary ion mass spectrometry was used to study oxygen implanted in the surface of copper from the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF). Oxidation that occurred in orbit shows a characteristic oxygen isotope composition, depleted in O-18. The measured depletion is comparable to the predicted depletion (45 percent) based on a model of the gravitational separation of the oxygen isotopes. The anomalous oxygen was contained within 10nm of the surface. Tray E10 was calculated to have received 5.14 x 10(exp 21) atoms of oxygen cm(sup -2) during the LDEF mission and so there is sufficient anomalous implanted oxygen present in the surface to obtain a reliable isotopic profile.

Age and isotopic relationships among the angrites Lewis Cliff 86010 and Angra dos Reis

The paper presents results of a wide-ranging isotopic investigation of the the Antarctic angrite LEW-86010 (LEW), and reassesses the type angrite Angra dos Reis (ADOR) in order to obtain precise radiometric ages and initial Sr isotopic compositions, and to search for the erstwhile presence of the short-lived nuclei Sm-146 and Al-26 via their daughter products. The isotopic compositions of Sm, U, Ca, and Ti were measured to allow a detailed appraisal to be made of the relations between, and the geneology of, these two angrites. LEW proves to be severely contaminated with modern terrestrial Pb, which is shown to result from terrestrial weathering. Concordant Pb-Pb model ages of pyroxene separates are obtained; uranium isotopic compositions are normal within error. Overall, striking age and isotopic similarities between LEW and ADOR were found, suggesting almost simultaneous production on the same asteroid, even though recent experimental studies imply that the two are not comagmatic.

The isotopes of neon in the galactic cosmic rays

The paper examines the results obtained by the University of Chicago instrument on board the IMP 7 satellite used to measure the abundances of Ne-20 and Ne-22 in the galactic cosmic rays during 1973-1977, over the general energy range of 60-230 MeV per nucleon. It is reported that the instrument shows a mass resolution of 0.7 amu(sigma) which was confirmed by calibrating a backup instrument at the LBL Bevalac with separated beams of neon isotopes. Through the use of standard solar modulation and cosmic-ray propagation models, the cosmic-ray source ratio inferred is Ne-22/Ne-20 = 0.38 = or -0.07 which is significantly greater than the present solar system ratio. It is concluded that propagation effects or cross-section uncertainties cannot account for such a large abundance of Ne-22, and thus this measurement provides evidence that the cosmic rays come from a source region where the Ne-22 abundance is substantially greater than in solar system material.

The age of ferroan anorthosite 60025 - Oldest crust on a young moon?

Sm-Nd isotopic data for mineral separates from the ferroan anorthosite 60025, which define a precise isochron of 4.44 + or - 0.02 Ga age, are discussed. This age is about 110 Myr younger than the formation of the first large solid objects in the solar nebula. If the moon is as old as the oldest meteorite, the relatively young age determined for 60025 implies that the magma ocean did not form synchronously with lunar formation or that the magma ocean required over 100 Myr to reach the stage of ferroan anorthosite crystallization. It is proposed that the accumulated body of radiogenic isotope data for lunar rocks permit the moon to be as young as 4.44-4.51 Ga. This is consistent with the idea that the materials that make up the moon were derived from the earth.

Oxygen isotope studies of ordinary chondrites

Several stages in the evolution of ordinary chondritic meteorites are recorded in the oxygen isotopic composition of the meteorites and their separable components (chondrules, fragments, clasts, and matrix). The whole-rock isotopic compositions reflect the iron-group of the meteorite (H, L, or LL). Isotopic uniformity of H3 to H6 and L3 to L6 are consistent with closed-system metamorphism within each parent body. LL3 chondrites differ slightly from LL4 to LL6, implying a small degree of open-system aqueous alteration and carbon reduction. On the scale of individual chondrules, the meteorites are isotopically heterogeneous, allowing recognition of the solar-nebular processes of chondrule formation. Chondrules for all classes of ordinary chondrites are derived from a common population, which was separate from the population of chondrules in carbonaceous or enstatite chondrites. Chondrules define an isotopic mixing line dominated by exchange between (O - 16)-rich and (O - 16)-poor reservoirs. The oxygen isotopic compositions of chondrites serve as 'fingerprints' for identification of genetic association with other meteorite types (achondrites and iron) and for recognition of source materials in meteoritic breccias.

Primitive Xe in the atmospheres of Earth and mars

Published data on Xe isotope compositions in primitive carbonaceous meteorites are examined using multidimensional correlation analysis. Distribution of the Xe data in multidimensional data space, except for (129)Xe, can be characterized by a single component, whose isotope composition is identical to 'H plus L minus Xe'. Additional small contributions to the data variations, less than 1 percent of total variations, can be attributed to 'S minus Xe' as well as atmospheric contamination. Isotopic composition of primitive Xe common to the Earth's atmosphere and carbonaceous meteorites are determined with the same assumption as adopted by Pepin and Phinney: primitive Xe is precisely related to fission-free Xe in the Earth's atmosphere by mass fractionation. The determined isotopic composition of primitive Xe is closer to Solar-type Xe, rather than U-Xe (and the primitive Xe estimated from chondrite-achondrite correlation. Hence, the present published data on Xe isotope compositions in meteorites do not seem to require any special component for the primitive Xe common to the Earth's atmosphere and carbonaceous meteorites. Thus Earth's accreting planetesimals would have trapped Xe from the surrounding nebula gases where Xe isotope composition is identical to Solar-type Xe. The trapped Xe was subsequently subject to isotopic fractionation due to gravitational separation as planetesimals grew. Finally fissiogenic Xe from (244)Pu was added to form the present Xe isotope composition of the Earth's atmosphere. The amount of fissiogenic (136)Xe is estimated to be 2.6 percent of the total amount of (136)Xe in the atmosphere, which is about a half of that estimated by Pepin and Phinney (4.65 percent).

Isotope shifts in methane near 6000/cm

Isotope shifts for cleanly resolved vibrational-rotational absorption lines of CH4-12 and CH4-13 were measured by a 5-m focal length Littrow spectrometer in the 6000/cm range. The methane isotopes were held in separate absorption cells: 20 torr of CH4-13 in a 1-m cell, and 5 torr of CH4-12 in a White cell of 4-m optical path length. Measured shifts for the cleanly resolved singlets R(0), R(1), Q(1) and P(1) are summarized in tabular form.
