Determination of volume fraction in multiphase systems using incomplete pole figures

The determination of the volume fraction of a second phase in a multiphase sample by X-ray diffraction becomes more difficult if the diffracting planes have a preferred orientation. Lopata and Kula have described a method of treating this problem using complete pole figures for each of the phases. With some samples, it is not always possible or convenient to obtain data over the full hemisphere. Equations and an example are given which require X-ray data over a limited range of approximately 0 to 75 deg. This can be obtained by reflection without a specially cut sample or transmission data. A series of Legendre polynomials are fitted to data collected while spinning the sample about its normal. An extrapolation is made possible by introducing two conditions on the end points which must be satisfied if the extrapolation functions are to be valid.

Reduced-order Kalman filtering with incomplete observability

Kalman filtering is considered with reference to linear stochastic dynamic systems without complete observability. It is shown that the canonical decomposition theorem can be extended to the stochastic case and the matrix Riccati equation of the Kalman filter is order-reducible if some states are not observable. The inclusion of unobservable states in Kalman filtering makes the unobservable states 'asymptotically' observable in the filter if these unobservable states are dynamically connected to observable states and asymptotically stable. The reduced-order Kalman filter saves computation time when compared to the conventional Kalman filter.

Evaluation of orbits with incomplete knowledge of the mathematical expectancy and the matrix of covariation of errors

The problem of selecting the optimal algorithm of filtration and the optimal composition of the measurements is examined assuming that the precise values of the mathematical expectancy and the matrix of covariation of errors are unknown. It is demonstrated that the optimal algorithm of filtration may be utilized for making some parameters more precise (for example, the parameters of the gravitational fields) after preliminary determination of the elements of the orbit by a simpler method of processing (for example, the method of least squares).

Determining solutions of hyperbolic systems from incomplete data

An investigation is conducted regarding first-order hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations, taking into account problems for which complete initial data are not available. Problems of the considered kind arise in geophysical applications where satellites are used to collect data. In global weather prediction, it is possible to derive atmospheric temperature and pressure reasonably well over the whole globe from satellite measurements; obtaining the wind field globally is more difficult. It is pointed out that a simple model of atmospheric flow investigated in numerical weather prediction is governed by the shallow water equations. The effect of the Coriolis term on the linearized shallow-water equations is studied.

Structural modelling and control design under incomplete parameter information: The maximum-entropy approach

A stochastic structural control model is described. In contrast to the customary deterministic model, the stochastic minimum data/maximum entropy model directly incorporates the least possible a priori parameter information. The approach is to adopt this model as the basic design model, thus incorporating the effects of parameter uncertainty at a fundamental level, and design mean-square optimal controls (that is, choose the control law to minimize the average of a quadratic performance index over the parameter ensemble).

Large negative Ti-50 anomalies in refractory inclusions from the Murchison carbonaceous chondrite - Evidence for incomplete mixing of neutron-rich supernova ejecta into the solar system

An ion microprobe was used to measure Ti-50 variations in hibonite-rich inclusions from the Murchison chondrite. Both deficits and excesses of the isotope were found, depending on the inclusion being scanned. The anomalies were not correlated with the mineralogy, chemical composition, other isotopic anomalies of Ti, etc. The lack of correlations indicates that the cosmic chemical memory model (Clayton, 1981) cannot explain the observed variations. The Ti-50 concentrations may have originated when a supernova explosion triggered the collapse of a molecular cloud that formed the solar system. The solar system Ti-50 anomalies were from the cloud, not the progenitor star.

Interferometric tomography of continuous fields with incomplete projections

Interferometric tomography in the presence of an opaque object is investigated. The developed iterative algorithm does not need to augment the missing information. It is based on the successive reconstruction of the difference field, the difference between the object field to be reconstructed and its estimate, only in the difined region. The application of the algorithm results in stable convergence.

Krylov methods preconditioned with incompletely factored matrices on the CM-2

The performance is measured of the components of the key interative kernel of a preconditioned Krylov space interative linear system solver. In some sense, these numbers can be regarded as best case timings for these kernels. Sweeps were timed over meshes, sparse triangular solves, and inner products on a large 3-D model problem over a cube shaped domain discretized with a seven point template. The performance of the CM-2 is highly dependent on the use of very specialized programs. These programs mapped a regular problem domain onto the processor topology in a careful manner and used the optimized local NEWS communications network. The rather dramatic deterioration in performance was documented when these ideal conditions no longer apply. A synthetic workload generator was developed to produce and solve a parameterized family of increasingly irregular problems.

Flexible Weighting-And-Matching Scheme For Incomplete Data

Method for partial matching of data makes conventional electronic memory addressable via its contents. When implemented by suitable algorithm, method enables computer system containing memory to search memory for datum making exact or best approximate match to datum in query. Advantages are: requires neither long "learning" time nor "retraining" when additional data stored and attaches to each datum relative importance that can change with time without decreasing speed of retrieval. Responses include exact or approximate recollection, indications of ambiguity, avoidance, and even forgetfulness.

Ultimate Stresses Developed by 24S-T Sheet in Incomplete Diagonal Tension

Tests were made on 18 shear panels of 24S-T aluminum alloy to verify the dependence of the ultimate stress on the degree of development of the diagonal-tension field. Tests were made on two thicknesses of sheet with the sheet either clamped between the flange angle or riveted to the outside of the angles.

Effect of rivet or bolt holes on the ultimate strength developed by 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T sheet in incomplete diagonal tension

Strength tests were made of a number of 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T aluminum alloy shear webs to determine the effect of rivet or bolt holes on the shear strength. Data were obtained for webs which approached a condition of pure shear stress as well as for webs with well-developed diagonal tension. The rivet factor (pitch minus diameter), divided by pitch, was varied from approximately 0.81 to 0.62. These tests indicated that the shear stresses on the gross section were nearly constant for all values of the rivet factor investigated if the other properties of the web were not changed.

Admitting the Inadmissible: Adjoint Formulation for Incomplete Cost Functionals in Aerodynamic Optimization

We derive the adjoint equations for problems in aerodynamic optimization which are improperly considered as "inadmissible." For example, a cost functional which depends on the density, rather than on the pressure, is considered "inadmissible" for an optimization problem governed by the Euler equations. We show that for such problems additional terms should be included in the Lagrangian functional when deriving the adjoint equations. These terms are obtained from the restriction of the interior PDE to the control surface. Demonstrations of the explicit derivation of the adjoint equations for "inadmissible" cost functionals are given for the potential, Euler, and Navier-Stokes equations.
