Measurements of the lightest hypernucleus ($_{Λ}^{3}{H}$): progress and perspective

The hyperon-nucleon (Y-N) interaction is important for the description of the equation-of-state of high baryon density matter. Hypernuclei, the cluster object of nucleons and hyperons, serve as cornerstones of a full understanding of the Y-N interaction. Recent measurements of the lightest known hypernucleus, the hypertriton’s ($_{Λ}^{3}{H}$) and anti-hypertriton’s ($\frac{H}{Λ}$$\bar{H}$) lifetime, mass and Λ separation energy have attracted interests on the subject. Its cross section and collective flow parameters have also been measured in heavy-ion collisions, which have revealed new features on its production mechanism. In this article we summarise recent measurements of $_{Λ}^{3}{H}$, focusing on the heavy-ion collisions. Here, we will discuss their implications for the $_{Λ}^{3}{H}$ properties and the constrains on the Y-N interaction models.

Direct nonparametric multimessenger constraints on the equation of state of cold dense nuclear matter

We utilize the now substantial amount of astrophysical observations of neutron stars (NSs), along with perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations at high density, to directly constrain the NS equation of state (EOS). To this end, we construct nonparametric EOS priors by using Gaussian processes trained on 75 EOSs, which include models with either hadrons, hyperons, or quarks at high densities. We create a prior using the full EOS sample (model agnostic), and one prior for each EOS family to test model discrimination. We introduce a novel inference approach, which allows the simultaneous sampling of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of binary NS mergers, as well as a nonparametric equation of state. We showcase this method in a Bayesian updating scheme by first performing a complete analysis of the binary NS merger event GW170817 with minimal assumptions, and sequentially adding information from x-ray and radio NS observations, along with pQCD calculations. Besides providing standard constraints, such as the pressure at twice nuclear saturation density 𝑝⁡(2⁢𝜌 sat ) = 4.3$^{+0.6}_{−0.6}$ × 10 34 dyne/cm 2 , at 95% confidence level, for the model agnostic prior, our methodology shows how the choice of EOS families used in conditioning changes the inferred astrophysical properties of the EOS, namely tidal deformability and maximum supported NS mass. We find hyperonic priors predicting higher tidal deformabilities for a 1.4⁢𝑀 ⊙ NS, and hadronic priors being preferred by the considered astrophysical data.

Excluded-volume model for quarkyonic matter. II. Three-flavor shell-like distribution of baryons in phase space

We extend the excluded-volume model of isospin symmetric two-flavor dense quarkyonic matter [Phys. Rev. C 101, 035201 (2020)] including strange particles and address its implications for neutron stars. The effective sizes of baryons are defined from the diverging hard-core potentials in the short interdistance regime. Around the hard-core density, the repulsive core between baryons at short distances leads to a saturation in the number density of baryons and generates perturbative quarks from the lower phase space, which leads to the shell-like distribution of baryons by the Pauli exclusion principle. The strange-quark Fermi sea always appears at high densities but the Λ hyperon shell only appears when the effective size of the Λ hyperon is smaller than the effective size of nucleons. We find that the pressure of strange quarkyonic matter can be large enough to support neutron stars with two times solar mass and can have a large sound speed, $c^2_s ≃ 0.7$. Finally, the fraction of the baryon number carried by perturbative quarks is about 30% at the inner core of most massive neutron stars.

Evolution of Λ polarization in the hadronic phase of heavy-ion collisions

Using the AMPT+MUSIC+URQMD hybrid model, we study the global and local spin polarizations of Λ hyperons as functions of the freeze-out temperature of the spin degree of freedom in the hadronic phase of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 GeV. Including contributions from both the thermal vorticity and thermal shear of the hadronic matter, we find that with the spin freeze-out temperature dropping from the hadronization temperature of 160 MeV to 110 MeV at the kinetic freeze-out, both the global and local spin polarizations of Λ hyperons due to the thermal vorticity decrease by a factor of 2, while those due to the thermal shear decrease quickly and become negligibly small at 140 MeV. Here our results thus suggest that it is important to take into account the evolution of the spin degree of freedom in the hadronic stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions when theoretically predicted global and local Λ spin polarizations are compared with the experimental measurements.

Λ spin polarization in event-by-event relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We present a systematic study of $\Lambda$ hyperon's polarization observables using event-by-event (3+1)D relativistic hydrodynamics. The effects of initial hot spot size and QGP's specific shear viscosity on the polarization observables are quantified. We examine the effects of the two formulations of the thermal shear tensor on the polarization observables using the same hydrodynamic background. With event-by-event simulations, we make predictions for the Fourier coefficients of $\Lambda$'s longitudinal polarization $P^z$ with respect to the event planes of different orders of anisotropic flow. We propose new correlations among the Fourier coefficients of $P^z$ and charged hadron anisotropic flow coefficients to further test the mapping from fluid velocity gradients to hyperon's polarization. Finally, we present a system size scan with Au+Au, Ru+Ru, and O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200$ GeV to study the system size dependence of polarization observables at the Relativistic Heavy-ion Collider.

Measurements of H Λ 3 and H Λ 4 Lifetimes and Yields in Au + Au Collisions in the High Baryon Density Region

We report precision measurements of hypernuclei $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$ lifetimes obtained from Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{sNN}$ = 3.0 GeV and 7.2 GeV collected by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and the first measurement of $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$ midrapidity yields in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{sNN}$ = 3.0 GeV. $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$, being the two simplest bound states composed of hyperons and nucleons, are cornerstones in the field of hypernuclear physics. Their lifetimes are measured to be 221 ± 15 (stat) ± 19 (syst) ps for $^3_ΛH$ and 218 ± 6 (stat) ± 13 (syst) ps for $^4_ΛH$. The p T -integrated yields of $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$ are presented in different centrality and rapidity intervals. It is observed that the shape of the rapidity distribution of $4_ΛH$ is different for 0%–10% and 10%–50% centrality collisions. Thermal model calculations, using the canonical ensemble for strangeness, describes the $^3_ΛH$ yield well, while underestimating the $^4_ΛH$ yield. Transport models, combining baryonic mean-field and coalescence (jam) or utilizing dynamical cluster formation via baryonic interactions (phqmd) for light nuclei and hypernuclei production, approximately describe the measured $^3_ΛH$ and $^4_ΛH$ yields. Our measurements provide means to precisely assess our understanding of the fundamental baryonic interactions with strange quarks, which can impact our understanding of more complicated systems involving hyperons, such as the interior of neutron stars or exotic hypernuclei.

$$\varLambda $$ and $$\varSigma $$ Excitations and the Quark Model

Abstract The spectrum of $$\varLambda $$ Λ and $$\varSigma $$ Σ excitations is reviewed taking into account (nearly) all hyperon resonances which were seen in early analyses or in one of the recent partial-wave analyses. The spectrum is compared with the old Isgur–Karl model and the Bonn model. These models allows us to discuss the SU(3) structure of the observed resonances. The SU(3) decomposition is compared with SU(6) relations between the different decay modes. Seven $$\varLambda $$ Λ states are proposed to be classified as SU(3) singlet states. The hyperon spectrum is compared with the spectrum of N and $$\varDelta $$ Δ resonances.

$$\Lambda $$ polarization in very high energy heavy ion collisions as a probe of the quark–gluon plasma formation and properties

Abstract We have studied the spin polarization of $$\Lambda $$ Λ hyperons in heavy ion collisions at center-of-mass energies $$\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}= 200$$ s NN = 200 GeV and $$\sqrt{s_\textrm{NN}}= 5.02$$ s NN = 5.02 TeV carried out at RHIC and LHC colliders. We have calculated the mean spin vector at local thermodynamic equilibrium, including all known first-order terms in the gradients of the thermo-hydrodynamic fields, assuming that the hadronization hypersurface has a uniform temperature. We have also included the feed-down contributions to the polarization of $$\Lambda $$ Λ stemming from the decays of polarized $$\Sigma ^*$$ Σ ∗ and $$\Sigma ^0$$ Σ 0 hyperons. The obtained results are in good agreement with the data. In general, the component of the spin vector along the global angular momentum, orthogonal to the reaction plane, shows strong sensitivity to the initial longitudinal flow velocity. Furthermore, the longitudinal component of the spin vector turns out to be very sensitive to the bulk viscosity of the plasma at the highest LHC energy. Therefore, the azimuthal dependence of spin polarization can effectively constrain the initial hydrodynamic conditions and the transport coefficients of the quark gluon plasma.

$\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm }$ production in $\text {pp}$ and $\text {p}{-}\text{Pb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with ALICE

The transverse momentum spectra and integrated yields of anti-$Σ$ hyperons ($\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$) have been measured in and collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE experiment. Measurements are performed via the newly accessed decay channel $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ → $\bar{\textrm{n}}π^±$. A new method of antineutron reconstruction with the PHOS electromagnetic spectrometer is developed and applied to this analysis. The p T spectra of $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ are measured in the range 0.5 < p T < 3 GeV/c and compared to predictions of the PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. The EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models provide the best descriptions of the measured spectra both in pp and p-Pb collisions, while models which do not account for multiparton interactions provide a considerably worse description at high p T . The total yields of $\overline{\Sigma }^{\pm }$ in both pp and p-Pb collisions are compared to predictions of the Thermal-FIST model and dynamical models PYTHIA 8, DPMJET, PHOJET, EPOS LHC and EPOS4. All models reproduce the total yields in both colliding systems within uncertainties. The nuclear modification factors R pPb for both $\overline{\Sigma}^{+}$ and $\overline{\Sigma}^{-}$ are evaluated and compared to those of protons, $Λ$ and $Ξ$ hyperons, and predictions of EPOS LHC and EPOS4 models. No deviations of R pPb for $\overline{\Sigma}^{\pm}$ from the model predictions or measurements for other hadrons are found within uncertainties.

Polarization and Vorticity in the Quark–Gluon Plasma

The quark–gluon plasma (QGP) produced by collisions between ultrarelativistic heavy nuclei is well described in the language of hydrodynamics. Noncentral collisions are characterized by very large angular momentum, which in a fluid system manifests as flow vorticity. This rotational structure can lead to a spin polarization of the hadrons that eventually emerge from the plasma, and thus these collisions provide experimental access to flow substructure at unprecedented detail. Recently, the first observations of Λ hyperon polarization along the direction of collisional angular momentum were reported. These measurements are in broad agreement with hydrodynamic and transport-based calculations and reveal that the QGP is the most vortical fluid ever observed. However, there remain important tensions between theory and observation that might be fundamental in nature. In the relatively mature field of heavy-ion physics, the discovery of global hyperon polarization and 3D simulations of the collision have opened an entirely new direction of research. We discuss the current status of this rapidly developing area and directions for future research.

Spin-Density Matrix Elements in K∗(892) Photoproduction with Recoiling Λ at GlueX

We report on the measurement of spin-density matrix elements for the K∗(892) → K+π0 photoproduction process with a recoiling Λ hyperon. The measurement used high-statistics GlueX data from photoproduction off a proton target at photon energies between 8.2 and 8.8 GeV, in a kinematic regime dominated by t-channel exchange processes. GlueX is a fixed-target experiment with a linearly polarized photon beam and a nearly 4π hermetic detector, allowing extraction of the full spin observ- ables from both the K+π0 and Λ → π−p systems. The GlueX data show clear evidence of the K∗(892) resonance in the K+π0 mass spectrum, along with additional structures at higher masses that may correspond to K∗0 or K∗2 resonances. The precise measurement of the spin-density matrix elements of the K∗(892) could serve as a standard candle for con- tinuing studies of higher-mass excited K∗ states. In addition, t-channel K∗ photoproduction differs from previous measurements of non-strange vector meson photoproduction, as it is free from Pomeron exchange and is virtually unexplored in this energy regime. Furthermore, the unprece- dented data collected by GlueX allow for investigations of correlations between the Λ polarization and the spin-density matrix elements of K∗ production, paving the way for future partial-wave analyses with full spin information involving the recoil hyperon.

Search For Excited Cascade Hypersons (¿*-) Using the CLAS12 Spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory

The number of experimentally observed doubly strange Cascade states to date is far fewer than has been predicted theoretically. The CLAS12 Very Strange physics program (E12- 11-005A) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility aims to study the electroproduction of these states using the newly upgraded CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer for 12 GeV (CLAS12) in experimental Hall B. In this project, the reaction ep ! e0K+K+??? ! e0K+K+K?(?=?0) is studied using CLAS12 Run Group A (RG-A) data sets taken by impinging electron beams of 10:2 and 10:6 GeV energies on an LH2 target. Scattered electrons are detected with either the Forward Detector (FD), covering a polar angle range of 5? to 35? to study electroproduction, or with the Forward Tagger (FT), covering a polar angle range of 2:5? to 4:5?, to study quasi-real photoproduction. The CLAS12 detector with nearly a 4? solid angle coverage is used to detect scattered electrons and charged kaons in the ?final state. ?=?0 hyperons are reconstructed using the missing mass technique to explore intermediate doubly-strange hyperons (???) that decay to K? and ?=?0. No statistically significant ??? states other than the ???(1530) were found in the missing mass spectra based on the currently available statistics in the CLAS12-FD acceptance only. A maximum log-likelihood method is implemented to determine the statistical significance and the upper limits on the ???(1820) electroproduction cross section by constructing 95% confidence level boundaries on the ???(1820) yields. Additional research was conducted to investigate the upper limit electroproduction cross section of the reaction ep ! e0K+K+??? ! e0K+K+K?(?=?0) as a function of the electroproduced ??? mass and the differential cross section ( d?dMM(e0K+K+) ) as a function of missing mass MM(e0K+K+) for electroproduction and quasi-real photoproduction processes.

Baryon–Antibaryon Photoproduction off the Proton

The GlueX Experiment at Jefferson Lab uses linearly polarized photon beam to study the photoproduction of light mesons and baryons off a proton target with unprecedented precision. We have observed p¯p photoproduction and, for the first time, ?¯? photoproduction from thresholds up to E = 11.6 GeV. We reproduce the observed kinematic distributions with a phenomenological model that includes t-channel Regge exchange and double Regge exchange. The model uses few parameters to match all the kinematic spectra via an optimization algorithm developed specifically for this purpose. We report the total cross sections of the two reactions, as well as differential cross sections with respect to various momentum transfers and invariant mass spectra of p¯p, ?¯?, p¯? systems which show enhancements right above production thresholds. Furthermore, the beam asymmetries of the p¯p system are extracted from the GlueX data to further probe the nature of the t-channel Regge exchanges. We also report preliminary measurements of the spin polarizations of the individual hyperons. No prominent resonance structure was found in these reaction channels, but the angular distributions and the correlation of longitudinal momenta indicate the existence of multiple production mechanisms. Besides a dominant forward peak in the polar angle of the baryon-antibaryon pair in t-channel production, we see wide-angle antibaryon distributions different from that of the baryon. In the hyperon channel, we see a clear separation between the photoproduction of the ?¯?, p¯? systems.

DOUBLY-STRANGE BARYON SPECTROSCOPY WITH THE GLUEX EXPERIMENT: GROUND STATE ¿(1320) PHOTOPRODUCTION CROSS SECTION AND PROPERTIES

In the light-quark sector, traditional quark models and, more recently, lattice QCD calculations have predicted many more baryon states than have been experimentally observed. The hyperons, baryons with strange-quark content, in particular abundantly lack these observed states, and past observations are statistically limited. For multi-strange hyperons the matter is much worse and the production mechanisms of these states in photoproduction are very poorly understood. By capitalizing on the narrow peaks, as compared to the broad and overlapping N* and ¿* states, characteristic of the lowest lying ¿ resonances, the systematic aspects of the spectrum can be analyzed. In addition, we can measure experimental observables such as the production cross section to study the production mechanisms of the ¿ resonances. By accumulating various experimental observables, this goal could be accomplished through Partial Wave Analysis (PWA). The main body of work presented in this dissertation is the physics analysis and systematic study of the production cross section for the doubly strange octet ground state baryon (¿(1320)) in the exclusive t-channel photoproduction reaction ¿p ¿ K+Y* ¿ K+(K+¿-)Y* where ¿- ¿ ¿p- and ¿ ¿ pp-. The spin quantum number of ¿(1320) is also extracted and discussed. A preliminary result to extract the mass of ¿(1320) is also explored as a result of the statistical limitations of current measurements. Furthermore, the spectrum of the excited ¿* baryons are explored and discussed in the ¿*- ¿ K-¿ decay channel. The studies on the ground state and excited ¿ baryon are performed using the GlueX Phase-I (GlueX-I) data set. We have extracted differential cross sections from seven beam photon energy bins for E¿ ¿ [6.4,11.4] GeV1 and for -t < 2.4 GeV2 in the production of K+Y*. 1Natural units (c = 1) are used for the entire body of work.

Recoil polarization in 𝐾 + ⁢𝑌 electroproduction in the nucleon resonance region with CLAS12

Hyperon recoil polarization measurements for the exclusive electroproduction of 𝐾 + ⁢Λ and 𝐾 + ⁢Σ 0 final states from an unpolarized proton target have been carried out using the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements at beam energies of 6.535 and 7.546 GeV span the range of four-momentum transfer 𝑄 2 from 0.3 to 4.5GeV 2 and invariant mass 𝑊 from 1.6 to 2.4 GeV, while covering the full center-of-mass angular range of the 𝐾 + . These new Λ polarization observables extend the existing data in a similar kinematic range but from a significantly larger dataset. However, they represent the first electroproduction measurements of this observable for the Σ 0 . These data will allow for better exploration of the reaction mechanism in strangeness production, for further understanding of the spectrum and structure of excited nucleon states that couple to 𝐾⁢𝑌, and for improved insight into the strong interaction in the nonperturbative domain.

Insights from binary pulsars and laboratories into baryon number violation: Implications for GeV dark matter

Rare processes in laboratory and within astrophysical environments can be highly sensitive probes of baryon-number-violating interactions at the TeV scale. We demonstrate the power of neutron stars to constrain baryon-number violation by considering a minimal extension of the standard model involving a TeV-mass scalar mediator and a GeV scale Majorana fermion ψ . We find that a Δ B = 2 mass-loss process in binary pulsar systems via n → γ ψ and the subsequent scattering ψ n → π − K + places stringent constraints on the model parameter space. These limits will become much stronger, due to the possibility of Λ → γ ψ decays at the tree level, if the neutron star equation of state is hyperonic. We compare these constraints with ongoing and future collider experiments, n − n ¯ oscillations, and dinucleon decay searches at future large-scale neutrino experiments, finding that the binary pulsars bounds on couplings are significantly tighter for specific flavor combinations. First Measurement of Λ Electroproduction off Nuclei in the Current and Target Fragmentation Regions

Here, we report results of Λ hyperon production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off deuterium, carbon, iron, and lead targets obtained with the CLAS detector and the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility 5.014 GeV electron beam. These results represent the first measurements of the Λ multiplicity ratio and transverse momentum broadening as a function of the energy fraction (z) in the current and target fragmentation regions. The multiplicity ratio exhibits a strong suppression at high z and an enhancement at low z. The measured transverse momentum broadening is an order of magnitude greater than that seen for light mesons. This indicates that the propagating entity interacts very strongly with the nuclear medium, which suggests that propagation of diquark configurations in the nuclear medium takes place at least part of the time, even at high z. The trends of these results are qualitatively described by the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model, particularly for the multiplicity ratios. These observations will potentially open a new era of studies of the structure of the nucleon as well as of strange baryons.
