Design guidelines for hybrid microcircuits; organic adhesives for hybrid microcircuits

The properties of organic adhesives were studied to acquire an adequate information base to generate a guideline document for the selection of adhesives for use in high reliability hybrid microcircuits. Specific areas covered include: (1) alternate methods for determining the outgassing of cured adhesives; (2) effects of long term aging at 150C on the electrical properties of conductive adhesives; (3) effects of shelf life age on adhesive characteristics; (4) bond strengths of electrically conductive adhesives on thick film gold metallization, (5) a copper filled adhesive; (6) effects of products outgassed from cured adhesives on device electrical parameters; (7) metal migration from electrically conductive adhesives; and (8) ionic content of electrically insulative adhesives. The tests performed during these investigations are described, and the results obtained are discussed in detail.

Diazonium-Functionalized Silicon Hybrid Photoelectrodes: Film Thickness and Composition Effects on Photoelectrochemical Behavior

Aryl diazonium electrografting is a powerful method for imparting molecular functionality onto various substrates by forming a stable carbon-surface covalent bond. While the high reactivity of the aryl radical intermediate makes this method fast and reliable, it can also lead to the formation of an insulating and disordered multilayer film. These thick films affect electrochemical performance, especially for semiconductor substrates used in photoelectrochemical applications. For this work we studied the effects of film thickness and composition by electrografting in situ-generated aminobenzene diazonium salts onto both n-type and p-type silicon electrodes at fixed potentials. Next, we attached ferrocene to the amine-terminated films and probed their (photo)electrochemical behavior. Cyclic voltammetry measurements showed decreased electrochemical reversibility with increasing diazonium film thickness; this reversibility was restored when ferrocene was incorporated throughout the film with a layer-by-layer deposition process. Finally, we compared the behavior of dark p-type electrodes to n-type photoelectrodes and observed differences in the electrochemical reversibility that we attribute to the change in potential drop across the two interfaces.

Control and Simulation of a Grid-Forming Inverter for Hybrid PV-Battery Plants in Power System Black Start

Power system restoration is an important part of system planning. Power utilities are required to maintain black start capable generators that can energize the transmission system and provide cranking power to non-blackstart capable generators. Traditionally, hydro and diesel units are used as black start capable generators. With the increased penetration of bulk size solar farms, inverter based generation can play an important role in faster and parallel black start thus ensuring system can be brought back into service without the conventional delays that can be expected with limited black start generators. Inverter-based photovoltaic (PV) power plants have advantages that are suitable for black start. This paper proposes the modeling, control, and simulation of a grid-forming inverter-based PV-battery power plant that can be used as a black start unit. The inverter control includes both primary and secondary control loops to imitate the control of a conventional synchronous machine. The proposed approach is verified using a test system modified from the IEEE 9-bus system in the time-domain electromagnetic transient simulation tool PSCAD. The simulation results shows voltage and frequency stability during a multi-step black-start and network energization process.
