2007 Chicago Regional Household Travel Inventory

To provide data for developing and refining travel demand forecast models, the 2007 Regional Household Travel Inventory studied the demographic and travel behavior characteristics of residents in the greater Chicago area. It included households in eight counties in Illinois and three in Indiana. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning conducted the study in coordination with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission, and the Indiana Department of Transportation. Travel and activity information for all household members (regardless of age) was collected during a randomly assigned 24- or 48-hour period. It relied on the willingness of households to provide detailed information about their members and vehicles, and to record all travel and associated activity during the collection period. This study also featured a subsample of households collecting data via in-vehicle and wearable global positioning system devices.

2004 Kansas City Regional Household Travel Survey

The 2004 Regional Household Travel Survey documented the travel behavior characteristics of Kansas City residents to update the area's transportation model. The Mid-America Regional Council and the Kansas and Missouri Departments of Transportation sponsored the survey, which was administered by NuStats. Activity and travel information was collected for all household members, regardless of age, during a specific 24-hour period. It relied on the willingness of households to provide demographic information about its members and vehicles and to have all household members record all travel and activity for a specific 24-hour period. The study also included a subsample of household vehicles with global positioning system (GPS) devices. The objectives of the GPS component were twofold: (1) to provide an independent data stream of vehicular travel in order to measure the accuracy of the travel data reported over the telephone, and (2) to obtain details about those trips that were captured by GPS but not reported over the telephone, in order to derive a trip-correction factor.

2009 National Household Travel Survey - California Add-On

The California add-on survey supplements the 2009 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. The NHTS was conducted by the Federal Highway Administration, which collected data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households, as well as detailed information on travel behavior nationwide. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The California Department of Transportation participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 21,225 household samples in California, from March 2008 through May 2009.

2017 National Household Travel Survey - California Add-On

The California add-on survey supplements the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. The NHTS was conducted by the Federal Highway Administration, which collected data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households, as well as detailed information on travel behavior nationwide. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The California Department of Transportation participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 26,095 household samples in California, from April 2016 through April 2017.

The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) ran from April 19, 2016, through April 25, 2017. It collected data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households, as well as detailed information on travel behavior nationwide. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The Georgia Department of Transportation participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 8,631 household samples in Georgia. (The total number of household samples nationwide is 129,112.)

2017 National Household Travel Survey—Indian Nations Council of Governments (Oklahoma) Add-On

The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) ran from April 19, 2016, through April 25, 2017. It collected data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households, as well as detailed information on travel behavior nationwide. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The Indian Nations Council of Governments participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 1,049 household samples in Oklahoma. (The total number of household samples nationwide is 129,112.)

The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) ran from April 19, 2016, through April 25, 2017. It collected data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households, as well as detailed information on travel behavior nationwide. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 1,293 household samples in Iowa. (The total number of household samples nationwide is 129,112.)

2000-2001 California Statewide Household Travel Survey

The 2000-2001 California Statewide Household Travel Survey, conducted under the auspices of the California Department of Transportation, was conducted between October 2000 and December 2001 among households located in each of California's 58 counties. The purpose of the study was to update the statewide database of household socioeconomic and travel information and helped to refine travel estimates, models, and forecasts throughout California. The survey was an essential element in determining statewide and regional travel patterns. A total of 17,040 households participated in the survey, contributing household socioeconomic and travel data. Travel variables collected include trip times, mode, activity at location, origin and destination, and vehicle occupancy, among other travel-related data from 134,173 trips. Residents completed diary records of their daily travel over a 24-hour (weekday) or 48-hour period (Friday/Saturday or Sunday/Monday pair).

Sacramento Area Council of Governments's 1991 Household Travel Survey

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments's 1991 Household Travel Survey was conducted in conjunction with the California State Department of Transportation, and provides a detailed survey of travel behavior of 3,942 households in the Sacramento region. The region includes all of Sacramento, Yolo, Yuba, and Sutter counties, as well as the western portions of Placer and El Dorado counties. The purpose of the survey was to obtain up-to-date information on the socioeconomic, demographic, and travel characteristics of the population. During their travel day, participating household members were asked to record travel information in a diary for the specified 24-hour period. The information documented by respondents includes trip activities, mode of transportation, trip times, and trip location. Demographic information includes gender, age, employment status, household income, and household size, as well as whether the respondent held a valid driver's license, whether the respondent was a student, and whether the respondent owned or rented a home.

2003 Yakima County Household Travel Survey

The Yakima County Household Travel Survey was sponsored by the Yakima County Department of Public Works in Yakima, Washington, and it was conducted over a six-month period from December 2002 through June 2003. The study is an essential element in the transportation planning and modeling efforts for Yakima County. The purpose of the survey was to gather data on the socioeconomic characteristics and travel behavior of county residents, including household characteristics, person characteristics, vehicle characteristics, and travel-activity patterns. A total of 1,503 households were recruited to participate in the study, 1,107 of which provided travel data for all household members age 16 and older. Unweighted, the 1,107 households represent 3,084 persons (of which 2,221 were age 16 and older), had 2,138 vehicles available to them, and recorded a total of 7,369 trips.

1998/99 Thurston County Household Travel Study

The survey was conducted under the auspices of the Thurston Regional Planning Council, and it was funded through a state grant awarded to Intercity Transit of Olympia, Washington. Data collection was from September 1998 through March 1999. The purpose of the study was to provide data for the continuing development and refinement of the Regional Travel Demand Forecasting Model, as well as to provide a better understanding of travel behavior in the southern Puget Sound region of Washington. The resultant data set will be used to fulfill the model's functions of estimating trip generation and distribution, mode choice, and assignments. Participating households were assigned specific “travel days” to record their travel over a 48-hour period. A total of 2,465 households were recruited to participate in the study. Of these, 1,537 households completed travel diaries, and the information was retrieved from 3,653 household members regardless of age. Households member made 25,278 total trips during their 48-hour diary period.

New York State Household Travel Patterns: A Comprehensive Comparison Analysis

In 1969, the U.S. Department of Transportation began an initiative to collect detailed data on household and personal travel, with the most recent surveys being the 2017 and 2022 National Household Travel Surveys. The primary goal of these surveys is to collect trip-based data on the nature and characteristics of personal travel, allowing for an analysis of the relationships between travel patterns and the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of travelers and their households. In addition to the sample households allocated to New York State (NYS) in the national survey, they procured an additional sample of households in the 1995, 2001, 2009, and 2017 surveys. This report presents a comprehensive analysis of travel patterns, vehicle ownership trends, and travel behaviors across NYS regions and the rest of the nation.

Meaningful Household Savings: Best Practices for Achieving Equitable Solar Development

The Meaningful Household Savings Community of Practice—and this report—focuses on electricity bill savings, other household savings, wealth-building opportunities, and other benefits such as tenant services provided to residents in master-metered buildings. For this report, the project team collected information about ways meaningful household savings have been defined; researched best practices to define, achieve, and quantify meaningful household savings; and identified strategies to scale the adoption and implementation of successful methods.

2001 Atlanta Household Travel Survey

The 2001 Atlanta Household Travel Survey collected demographic, socioeconomic, and travel information on work and non-work travel behavior for a 48-hour travel period. The study was conducted on behalf of the Atlanta Regional Commission, and it is an essential element in the transportation planning and modeling efforts for the 13-county Atlanta region. The main objective of the study was to produce data that could be used to develop and calibrate travel demand models for use in travel forecasting, land use planning, and air quality planning to improve the transportation system. The second component in the survey was the deployment of an electronic travel diary with person-based GPS and an accelerometer to collect health and activity information. Travel data includes trip generation, trip distribution, and modal choice. The survey recruited a total of 12,184 households to participate in the study. Of these, 8,069 households (66%) completed travel. The 8,069 households, when weighted, represent 21,323 persons, 14,449 vehicles, and 126,127 places visited from April 2001 through April 2002. This dataset is part of the Metropolitan Travel Survey Archive, which includes travel surveys from numerous public agencies across the United States and is archived by the Transportation Secure Data Center to ensure their continued public availability.

1995 OKI Household Activity and Travel Report Survey

The OKI Household Activity and Travel Report Survey 1995, conducted by Market Opinion Research, gathered household activity and travel data from 3,000 households within the OKI region (Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana Council of Governments' service area). The region covers over 2,615 square miles and is home to 697,468 households (over 1.75 million people). The primary purpose of this study was to provide OKI with a new database of travel patterns and behavior to assist in updating the region's transportation models. Respondents were asked to report their activities for a 24-hour period from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on an assigned activity day. The survey included weekday assignments only from October 4, 1995, to November 30, 1995.

2006 Greater Triangle Household Travel Survey

The Greater Triangle Household Travel Survey was a comprehensive study of travel behavior throughout the 12-county Research Triangle Region, including all portions of Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Lee, Orange, Person, Wake, and Vance counties, the eastern portion of Harnett County, and the southern portion of Nash County. The primary objective of this survey effort was to document demographic and travel behavior characteristics of regional travelers in order to update the current regional model and to develop a new, more robust travel demand model for the 12-county region. The 2006 survey was conducted in association with NuStats' DataSource and Louis Berger Group and was sponsored by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Triangle Transit Authority, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The project was conducted over an eleven-month period from August 2005 through June 2006. The survey utilized standard household travel survey methods, in which all household members from 5,107 households were asked to record all trips for a specified 24-hour period using a specially designed travel log on a non-holiday weekday.

1997/1998 Regional Travel Household Interview Survey

The 1997/1998 Regional Travel—Household Interview Survey was conducted in the 28-county New York-New Jersey-Connecticut metropolitan area, including 12 counties in New York, 14 counties in New Jersey, and 2 counties in Connecticut. The study was jointly funded by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA). The purpose of the survey was to provide information suitable for gaining an in-depth understanding of the travel behavior of households and individuals, as well as the activities, demographics, and other factors that affect such behavior. The survey was a diary-type travel survey, in which detailed travel information and basic demographic and socioeconomic features were collected for each member of the 11,264 participating households during an entire travel day. The sample for analysis of resident-based weekday travel is 10,971 for the entire 28-county metro area. The weekend sample, comprised of 275 households, is restricted to the NJTPA counties of northern New Jersey and compliments the results of the 1995 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey for the entire area.

2002 Maricopa Regional Household Travel Survey

The Maricopa Regional Household Travel Survey was conducted by NuStats from February through December 2001 under the auspices of the Maricopa Association of Governments. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information related to travel behavior. The study objective was to produce data that could be used to develop and calibrate travel demand models for use in travel forecasting and air quality planning. A total of 5,478 households were recruited to participate in the study, and travel information was gathered from all household members regardless of age in Maricopa County and a small portion of Pinal County. Of these, 4,018 households (73%) completed travel diaries, representing 10,030 people, 6,589 vehicles, and 78,511 places visited during the 48-hour travel period.
