Film holder for curved vacuum platen

Vacuum apparatus for holding photographic film of various widths against cylindrically curved patens is discussed. Construction details and method of operation are explained. Illustration of equipment is provided.

Maciel, A., Jr.

Tissue holder for experimental and Demonstration Surgery

Development of device for holding anatomical tissues during operations is discussed. Device consists of plastic dish with hemispherical recess in center to hold excised eyes. Low vacuum applied to underside of recess insures holding of part.

Kuchta, F. J.

Thermistor holder for skin-temperature measurements

Sensing head of thermistor probe is supported in center area of plastic ring which has tabs so that it can be anchored in place by rubber bands or adhesive tapes. Device attaches probes to human subjects practically, reliably, and without affecting characteristics of skin segment being measured.

Greenleaf, J. E.

Multiple-sample holder for IC testing

Carrousel tray speeds up testing process by feeding mass spectrometer up to 12 sealed integrated circuit packages in rapid succession for analysis of contaminants and total gas composition.

Haack, R. F.

"Gentle" holder for brittle ceramics

Fixture uses commercially available flexible refractory fabric to gently hold brittle ceramic specimens for alignment during high temperature tests up to 2000 F and above. Assembly is held at both ends by water cooled straps that keep fabric/fixture bond area cold during tests.

Spray coating apparatus having a rotatable workpiece holder

A spray coating apparatus is provided for rotating a workpiece relative to a spray station to obtain a uniform coating of the workpiece. In a typical example, the workpiece comprises a ceramic tile which is to be coated with a ceramic coating and the tile is to be used as a reusable component of the thermal protection system for a space shuttle. The apparatus for rotating the workpiece includes a base support having a first rotatable stage for rotation in the horizontal plane and a second rotatable stage for rotation in a second plane inclined at an angle, such as 45 degrees, to the horizontal plane and the workpiece is supported on this second stage. Thus the workpiece is rotatable in both of two planes of rotation.

Exhaust emissions survey of a turbofan engine for flame holder swirl type augmentors at simulated altitude flight conditions

Emissions of carbon dioxide, total oxides of nitrogen, unburned hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide from an F100 afterburning two spool turbofan engine at simulated flight conditions are reported. Tests were run at Mach 0.8 at altitudes of 10.97 and 13.71 km (36,000 and 45,000 ft), and at Mach 1.2 at 13.71 km (45,000 ft). Emission measurements were made from intermediate power (nonafterburning) through maximum afterburning, using a single point gas sample probe traversed across the horizontal diameter of the exhaust nozzle. The data show that emissions vary with flight speed, altitude, power level, and radial position across the nozzle. Carbon monoxide emissions were low for intermediate and partial afterburning power. Unburned hydrocarbons were near zero for most of the simulated flight conditions. At maximum afterburning, there were regions of NOx deficiency in regions of high CO. The results suggest that the low NOx levels observed in the tests are a result of interaction with high CO in the thermal converter. CO2 emissions were proportional to local fuel air ratio for all test conditions.

Holder for Fragile Parts

Fixture with many springfingers holds irregularly-shaped parts. Gripping fixture has hundreds of springfingers, each applies minute force. Total force approximates hydrostatic pressure, resulting in well-distributed load that maintains firm grip without high stress concentrations. Applied to industrial robot manipulators, fixutre enhances ability to grasp delicate parts.

Holland, L. R.

Quick-Change Holder for Aeronautical-Research Microphones

Mounting holds microphone flush with aircraft surface and maintains pressure seal. Microphones, which measure dynamic pressure and shock waves as they pass over aircraft fuselage or other experimental body, mounted through fuselage flush with outside surface. Besides being faster and easier to use than older mounts, new mount prevents damage to microphone on removal because no sealant to be cut and scraped away.

Cohn, R.

Specimen and Holder for Sliding-Mode Fatigue Tests

Single-ended notch design facilitates accurate measurements of crack progression. Novel test specimen and novel loading fixture and fracture testing of materials under Mode II, or sliding-mode, loading. Testing required for analysis of failures in structural materials, bearings, and the like.

Buzzard, R. J.

Holder For Shot Peening

Fixture delimits peened area precisely while boosting productivity. New fixture ensures small tolerances essential for turbine blades. Opens and closes quickly so finished part removed and new part inserted.

Coker, Bill E.

Mode-II-Fracture Specimen And Holder

Test specimen and loading frame developed for fatigue and fracture testing of materials under mode-II (sliding-mode) loading. Assembly placed in compression-testing machine. Loads directed oppositely along centerline cause self-similar crack to propagate. Enables consistently accurate alignment of specimens before insertion of specimen/frame assemblies into compression-testing machine. Makes design attractive for testing in hostile environments in which access to machine or furnace limited. Additional feature, with little or no modification, placed horizontally into impact testing machine and subjected to loading at high speeds.

Gel-Filled Holders For Ultrasonic Transducers

In new technique, ultrasonic transducer embedded in rubbery, castable, low-loss gel to enable transducer to "look" into surface of test object or human body at any desired angle. Composed of solution of water and ethylene glycol in collagen matrix. Provides total contact of water bath, also used on bodies or objects too large for water baths, even if moving. Also provides look angles of poly(methyl methacrylate) angle block with potential of reduced acoustic impedance and refraction. Custom-tailored to task at hand, and gel sufficiently inexpensive to be discarded upon completion. Easy to couple ultrasound in and out of gel, minimizing losses and artifacts of other types of standoffs employed in ultrasonic testing.

Specimen Holder For Flammability Tests

Fixture holds sheet specimens for flammability tests. Frame and clamps designed to minimize local overstress on specimen. Heat capacity of fixture low, interfering less with interpretation of results of test by drawing less heat away from specimen. Accepts films, fabrics, foams, and other sheets, rigid or flexible. Specimens thin or thick, or of variable thickness. Bent to accommodate curved rigid specimens. Also used for such other tests as particle-impact tests.
