A Distributed Control Architecture for Cascaded H-Bridge Converter with Integrated Battery Energy Storage

Cascaded H-bridge topology has been used in grid-tied converters for battery energy storage system due to its modular structure. To fully utilize the converter’s modularity, this paper proposes a hierarchical distributed control architecture that consists of primary control, secondary control and battery state of charge (SOC) balancing control. Primary control ensures accurate current tracking while a distributed secondary control based on consensus algorithm is presented to regulate power sharing among modules and is proved to be stable theoretically. Here, a distributed SOC balancing control is further introduced to improve energy efficiency of battery energy storage system. Finally, the hierarchical distributed control strategy is implemented using hardware controllers and a software platform. Besides, a carrier phase shift control is also implemented to achieve multilevel output voltage and harmonic reduction. The experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed control scheme effectively.

Transplatformer: translating toxicogenomic profiles between generations of platforms

Background Transcriptomic profiling technologies have advanced the analysis of biological and toxicological responses. However, substantial differences in probe design, dynamic range, gene coverage, and preprocessing pipelines across platforms introduce artifacts that limit cross-study integration and hinder the reuse of historical datasets. We aim to develop computational methods for accurate cross-platform translation to maximize the value of legacy resources. Results We present TransPlatformer a deep learning framework for translating gene expression profiles across heterogeneous toxicogenomics platforms. TransPlatformer employs a novel attention-based architecture to map high-dimensional fold-change vectors from legacy microarray technologies to current platforms. Models are trained and evaluated using DrugMatrix, spanning three technological generations. We investigate mixed-tissue, single-tissue, and cross-tissue training paradigms and benchmark performance against multilayer perceptron and matrix-completion baselines. In mixed-tissue training, TransPlatformer achieves a greater than 50% reduction in mean absolute error (0.043 vs. 0.09) and nearly doubles Pearson correlation ( ≈ 0.71 vs. 0.37) relative to baseline methods. Importantly, TransPlatformer preserves rare but biologically meaningful over- and under-expressed signals, with mean absolute error below 0.22. Single-tissue models yield further improvements for well-represented organs, such as a 10% reduction in liver mean absolute error, while underscoring the need for data augmentation strategies in low-sample tissues.ra Conclusions TransPlatformer provides an effective and scalable computational solution for cross-platform transcriptomic translation. By enabling biologically faithful harmonization of gene expression data, the proposed approach facilitates the reuse of legacy toxicogenomics datasets, enhances downstream biomarker discovery, and supports more reproducible predictive modeling in toxicology.

An X-Band Mixer Engineered for 77 K Operation

An X-band Si-diode singly balanced mixer developed specifically for cryogenic operation is presented. In order to reduce thermal demands on a mechanical cooler, the mixer was designed to operate with a minimum of local oscillator (LO) power. That is, since the LO had to be cooled to reduce phase noise, it was desirable to minimize the LO drive. Novel embedding circuit strategy was responsible for nearly theoretical performance. The signal-matching circuit simultaneously provided a reactive termination to the image, sum, and first, second, and third LO harmonic frequencies. A conversion loss of 3.2 dB at 77 K with an LO drive of +1 dBm was measured. This loss included IF filter, dc block, and hybrid coupler losses. Mixer conversion loss is shown to be consistent with the theoretical performance limit expected from the intrinsic diode. The relationship among junction capacitance, flat-band potential, and conversion loss is examined.

Electric Vehicle Charging Management in Smart Energy Communities to Increase Renewable Energy Hosting Capacity

Abnormal climates due to global warming have emerged as a big concern in the global community. To mitigate climate change and achieve sustainability, distributed energy resources (DERs), including solar and wind, have been recently deployed in power systems. As the penetration level of DERs has increased, however, it caused a multitude of issues in the power systems, such as voltage fluctuation in the distribution network limiting renewable hosting capacity. On the other hand, the electric vehicle (EV) industry is rapidly growing to facilitate the transition to a carbon-neutral community, illuminating the potential of EVs as a flexible grid asset to mitigate some of the issues and improve grid operation, if properly exploited. To explore the potential of EVs, this paper proposes an EV scheduling strategy. By using an optimal EV charging scheduling proposed, distribution system operators (DSOs) can minimize their operating costs and stably operate the system with a high level of DERs. To validate the method, a modified IEEE 33-bus system with DERs is developed. The case study shows the proposed scheduling strategizes EV charging to reduce the cost of PV curtailment. In the study, the method outperforms the renewable-only case with curtailment by 4.97% in DSO cost. It also demonstrates its potential to increase the renewable hosting capacity by harmonizing EV charging with renewables.

Earth Radiation Imbalance from a Constellation of 66 Iridium Satellites: Technological Aspects

Iridium Communications Inc. is launching a new generation of polar orbiting communication satellites in 2015-2017. Iridium will provide a hosted payload bay on each of the 66 satellites (plus 6 in-space spares). This offers the potential for a paradigm shift in the way we measure Earth radiation imbalance from space, as well as massive cost savings. Because the constellation provides 24/7 global coverage, there is no need to account for diurnal cycle via extrapolations from uncalibrated narrowband geostationary imagers. And the spares can be rolled over to view the Sun and deep space, then transfer their calibration to the other members of the constellation during the frequent cross-overs. In part using simulations of the constellation viewing realistic Earth scenes, this presentation will address the technological aspects of such a constellation: (1) the calibration strategy; (2) the highly-accurate and stable radiometers for measuring outgoing flux; and (3) the GRACE-inspired algorithms for representing the outgoing flux field in spherical harmonics and thus achieving rv500-km spatial resolution and two-hour temporal resolution.

Computer-Vision-Based Vibration Tracking Using a Digital Camera: A Sparse-Optical-Flow-Based Target Tracking Method

Computer-vision-based target tracking is a technology applied to a wide range of research areas, including structural vibration monitoring. However, current target tracking methods suffer from noise in digital image processing. In this paper, a new target tracking method based on the sparse optical flow technique is introduced for improving the accuracy in tracking the target, especially when the target has a large displacement. The proposed method utilizes the Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) technique which is based on FAST (Features from Accelerated Segment Test), a feature detector, and BRIEF (Binary Robust Independent Elementary Features), a binary descriptor. ORB maintains a variety of keypoints and combines the multi-level strategy with an optical flow algorithm to search the keypoints with a large motion vector for tracking. Then, an outlier removal method based on Hamming distance and interquartile range (IQR) score is introduced to minimize the error. The proposed target tracking method is verified through a lab experiment—a three-story shear building structure subjected to various harmonic excitations. It is compared with existing sparse-optical-flow-based target tracking methods and target tracking methods based on three other types of techniques, i.e., feature matching, dense optical flow, and template matching. The results show that the performance of target tracking is greatly improved through the use of a multi-level strategy and the proposed outlier removal method. The proposed sparse-optical-flow-based target tracking method achieves the best accuracy compared to other existing target tracking methods.

Modeling and ZVS Operation of the Isolated Modular Multilevel DC–DC Converter With a Unified Trapezoidal Wave Modulation

Here, this article introduces a unified trapezoidal wave (UTW) modulation scheme for the isolated modular multilevel dc–dc (IM2dc) converter, which consolidates multiple existing modulation strategies for the IM2dc converter, including the quasi-square wave (QSW) modulation, trapezoidal wave modulation, and sinusoidal wave modulation, into a unified framework. Furthermore, this article introduces the harmonic state-space (HSS) equations to model the IM2dc converter based on the UTW modulation method. The HSS model operates in the frequency domain, enabling it to circumvent the complexities associated with time-domain analysis and seamlessly integrate with the UTW modulation. This article proceeds to analyze the real and reactive power transfer characteristics of the IM2dc converter, as well as the power factor, considering the influence of multiple modulation parameters. Subsequently, it delves into the examination of zero voltage switching (ZVS) conditions for the IM2dc converter based on the UTW modulation and the HSS model. The complete ZVS boundaries of the IM2dc converter, taking various voltage ratios into account, are derived. This article also illustrates the effects of including harmonic orders in the modeling process, modulation parameters, and internal harmonic ripples on the ZVS boundaries. Finally, experimental validation of the analyses is conducted on a down-scaled prototype.

Molecular dynamics on quantum annealers

Abstract In this work we demonstrate a practical prospect of using quantum annealers for simulation of molecular dynamics. A methodology developed for this goal, dubbed Quantum Differential Equations (QDE), is applied to propagate classical trajectories for the vibration of the hydrogen molecule in several regimes: nearly harmonic, highly anharmonic, and dissociative motion. The results obtained using the D-Wave 2000Q quantum annealer are all consistent and quickly converge to the analytical reference solution. Several alternative strategies for such calculations are explored and it was found that the most accurate results and the best efficiency are obtained by combining the quantum annealer with classical post-processing (greedy algorithm). Importantly, the QDE framework developed here is entirely general and can be applied to solve any system of first-order ordinary nonlinear differential equations using a quantum annealer.

Supramolecular assembly of molecular wires alternating crown ethers and metal–halide complexes

Metal–halide complexes serve as key emissive centres in halide perovskites; however, precise control over their spatial organization through bottom-up assembly is challenging. Here we show that a crown-ether-assisted supramolecular assembly strategy can alternatingly connect metal–halide complexes and (crown ether@A) 2+ (where ‘A’ is an alkaline earth metal cation) complexes into a one-dimensional molecular wire, which can then be packed into a hexagonal crystal structure. This process resulted in the creation of an (18C6@Ba)MnBr 4 single crystal with green emission, achieving over 80% photoluminescence quantum yield and a narrow full width at half maximum. In addition, the non-centrosymmetric crystal structure gave rise to strong nonlinear optical responses, including second-harmonic generation. This versatile supramolecular assembly approach could be generalized to create various [M(I)X 2 ] − , [M(I)X 3 ] 2− , [M(II)X 4 ] 2− and [M(III)X 5 ] 2− molecular wires, broadening the potential for diverse emission colours and distinct optical properties. This strategy provides a general design principle for constructing supramolecular metal–halide building blocks with diverse optical functionalities.

Resonant Chiral Effects in Nonlinear Dielectric Metasurfaces

We study the resonant enhancement of linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects in planar silicon metasurfaces with an in-plane asymmetry supporting multipolar Mie resonances and quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). We demonstrate theoretically and observe in experiment the pronounced linear circular dichroism at the quasi-BIC resonances originating from the interaction of modes with the substrate. We further find that both local field enhancement and third-harmonic signal are large for Mie resonances and some quasi-BIC modes due to the critical coupling. We demonstrate experimentally a strong nonlinear chiroptical response associated with high efficiency of the third-harmonic generation and large nonlinear circular dichroism varying from +0.918 ± 0.049 to –0.771 ± 0.004 for the samples with different asymmetries. We reveal the nonreciprocal nature of nonlinear chirality governed by the microscopic symmetry of nonlinearities and macroscopic symmetries of the meta-atom and metasurface lattice. Here, we believe our results suggest a general strategy for engineering nonlinear chiroptical response in dielectric resonant metasurfaces.

Time-dependent mapping of the magnetic field at the core-mantle boundary

We consider the problem of constructing a time-dependent map of the magnetic field at the core-mantle boundary. We use almost all the available data from the last 300 years to produce two maps, one for the period 1690-1840 and the other for 1840-1990. We represent the spatial dependency of the field using spherical harmonics, the time dependency using a cubic B-spline basis, and seek the smoothest solutions compatible with the observations. We argue that, for observations from permanent magnetic observatories, the most efficient strategy is to use the first differences of annual means; for satellite data, the most efficient strategy is simply to limit the number of data used so as to minimize any tendency to map the crustal field into the core field. The resulting model fits the observatory data better than any previous model. The resulting time-dependent field map exhibits much of the same structure in the field and its secular variation identified in earlier studies.

Peptide‐Induced Ferroelectricity in Charge‐Transfer Supramolecular Materials

Organic ferroelectrics are of great interest in sustainable energy conversion, information storage, flexible electronics, and potential biomedical applications as soft implants, among many other applications. Despite their broad potential, the development of organic ferroelectrics has remained limited, with only a few known examples in solid-state systems, primarily due to the lack of well-established design strategies compared to inorganic systems. Bio-inspired supramolecular chemistry offers a path to create functional nanostructures that are water-processable and biocompatible. We report here on supramolecular charge transfer (CT) systems in which peptides are covalently linked to dyads of electron-donating and electron-accepting moieties, creating amphiphiles that self-assemble into nanoscale ribbons in water. The peptide chirality-induced symmetry breaking in these crystalline nanostructures not only results in second harmonic activity but also generates ferroelectric behavior across multiple CT systems, demonstrating a versatile supramolecular approach to the design of new organic ferroelectrics. Furthermore, culturing primary neuron cells on coatings of the ferroelectric materials promoted axonal growth and enhanced action potentials, indicating improved neuronal maturity facilitated by the polar structure of the ferroelectric nanomaterials. The supramolecular strategy used here holds promise to create new water-processable ferroelectric biomaterials, opening avenues for innovative applications in cell charge transfer, neuronal axon growth, peptide symmetry breaking, self-assembling peptides, supramolecular ferroelectrics, proliferation, and bioelectronics.

Higher harmonics in planar Hall effect induced by cluster magnetic multipoles

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials are attracting tremendous attention due to their spintronic applications and associated novel topological phenomena. However, detecting and identifying the spin configurations in AFM materials are quite challenging due to the absence of net magnetization. Herein, we report the practicality of utilizing the planar Hall effect (PHE) to detect and distinguish “cluster magnetic multipoles” in AFM Nd 2 Ir 2 O 7 (NIO-227) fully strained films. By imposing compressive strain on the spin structure of NIO-227, we artificially induced cluster magnetic multipoles, namely dipoles and A 2 - and T 1 -octupoles. Importantly, under magnetic field rotation, each magnetic multipole exhibits distinctive harmonics of the PHE oscillation. Moreover, the planar Hall conductivity has a nonlinear magnetic field dependence, which can be attributed to the magnetic response of the cluster magnetic octupoles. Our work provides a strategy for identifying cluster magnetic multipoles in AFM systems and would promote octupole-based AFM spintronics.

Ocean Surface Vector Wind: Research Challenges and Operational Opportunities

The atmosphere and ocean are joined together over seventy percent of Earth, with ocean surface vector wind (OSVW) stress one of the linkages. Satellite OSVW measurements provide estimates of wind divergence at the bottom of the atmosphere and wind stress curl at the top of the ocean; both variables are critical for weather and climate applications. As is common with satellite measurements, a multitude of OSVW data products exist for each currently operating satellite instrument. In 2012 the Joint Technical Commission on Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) launched an initiative to coordinate production of OSVW data products to maximize the impact and benefit of existing and future OSVW measurements in atmospheric and oceanic applications. This paper describes meteorological and oceanographic requirements for OSVW data products; provides an inventory of unique data products to illustrate that the challenge is not the production of individual data products, but the generation of harmonized datasets for analysis and synthesis of the ensemble of data products; and outlines a vision for JCOMM, in partnership with other international groups, to assemble an international network to share ideas, data, tools, strategies, and deliverables to improve utilization of satellite OSVW data products for research and operational applications.

Nonlinear Nonmodal Analysis of Hypersonic Flow over Blunt Cones

The linear amplification of modal disturbances that lead to boundary-layer transition in two-dimensional/axisymmetric hypersonic configurations is strongly reduced by the presence of a blunt nosetip, and the mechanisms underlying the observed onset of transition over the cone frustum are currently unknown. Linear nonmodal analysis has shown that both planar and oblique traveling disturbances that peak within the entropy layer experience appreciable energy amplification for moderate to large nosetip bluntness. The present study extends the previous linear analysis by including the nonlinear effects. Specifically, the perturbation form of the 2D, harmonic Navier-Stokes equations (HNSE) are solved with a fully implicit formulation and the Newton-Raphson method. The increased number of degrees of freedom for the nonlinear system presents difficulties for solution strategies based on direct solution of the linearized system. Such difficulties are overcome by using the GMRES iterative method with a preconditioner corresponding to a simplified Jacobian without the cross derivative terms. The HNSE solver is verified by comparing with nonlinear parabolized stability equation (NPSE) results for the nonlinear evolution of planar waves in an incompressible Blasius boundary layer and in a Mach 6 flow over a blunt cone. Finally, nonlinear nonmodal results are presented for planar traveling disturbances over the blunt cone. The nonmodal analysis demonstrates that entropy-layer disturbances generated close to the nose tip can seed the amplification of higher frequency Mack’s second-mode instabilities further downstream.
