A Hands-on Course on Intensified Membrane Processes for Sustainable Water Purification

The lack in process intensification (PI) training may be limiting processes to achieve sustainability goals. Furthermore, this project developed a hands-on course on intensified membrane processes to address knowledge gaps in PI. Bench-scale activities introduced concepts of membrane separation, operating engineering-scale modules provided a near-industrial experience, and simulation software allowed modeling and optimization of a process. Student evaluations showed that the combination of modeling, experimental, and peer-instruction work helped them understand the application of theoretical concepts.

Current Status of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Criticality Safety Program Hands-on Criticality Safety Training Courses [Slides]

The NCSP training and education program has been conducted since 2011 and has trained over 591 students. 388 students have been trained in the 2-week hands-on course for practitioners and 203 students have been trained in the 1-week manager courses. The course is continuously improved using lessons-learned from the prior year, and new course content is added as necessary. Special courses are developed and offered periodically at the discretion of the NCSP manager. The updated manager course for CSOs was successfully piloted at NCERC in June 2020 and was successfully piloted at Sandia in April 2022. Students interested in taking the courses should visit the DOE NCSP website for additional information about all course offerings and for information about course registration.

Predicting SARS-CoV-2 Variant Using Non-Invasive Hand Odor Analysis: A Pilot Study

The adaptable nature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has led to the emergence of multiple viral variants of concern. This research builds upon a previous demonstration of sampling human hand odor to distinguish SARS-CoV-2 infection status in order to incorporate considerations of the disease variants. This study demonstrates the ability of human odor expression to be implemented as a non-invasive medium for the differentiation of SARS-CoV-2 variants. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were extracted from SARS-CoV-2-positive samples using solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Sparse partial least squares discriminant analysis (sPLS-DA) modeling revealed that supervised machine learning could be used to predict the variant identity of a sample using VOC expression alone. The class discrimination of Delta and Omicron BA.5 variant samples was performed with 95.2% (±0.4) accuracy. Omicron BA.2 and Omicron BA.5 variants were correctly classified with 78.5% (±0.8) accuracy. Lastly, Delta and Omicron BA.2 samples were assigned with 71.2% (±1.0) accuracy. This work builds upon the framework of non-invasive techniques producing diagnostics through the analysis of human odor expression, all in support of public health monitoring.

Massive right-handed neutrinos in $\bar{B} \to D^* τ\bar X$ decay

We explore signatures of a massive right-handed neutrino (RHN) in angular distributions of $\bar{B} \to D^* (\to D π) τ(\to πν_τ) \bar X$ decays, where $X$ is an invisible state. We assume the new physics is described by the standard model effective field theory extended with an RHN in the MeV-GeV mass range. We calculate for the first time the full differential distributions in terms of the visible final states, including the decay of the $τ$ lepton. We evaluate the sensitivity of various distributions to the new physics operators.

A Hands-On Curriculum for Training in HPC Cluster Deployment and Management

This paper presents the design, methodology, and outcomes of the High-Performance Computing Technologies (HPCT) course, a hands-on training program focused on the system-side of HPC cluster deployment and administration. Delivered as part of the Master in High Performance Computing (MHPC) program, the course introduces students to key concepts in cluster configuration, including networking, software stack provisioning, job scheduling, and monitoring. Initially taught in person, the course was transitioned to an online format during the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift led to the development of openly available instructional material and a flipped-classroom approach that continues to support both in-person and hybrid delivery. All course materials are publicly available at www.hpc.temple.edu/mhpc/hpc-technology/index.html. By documenting the structure, infrastructure, and evolution of HPCT, this paper offers a model for accessible HPC system training that supports workforce development in computational science.

Hands-on with OWL: the Oak–Ridge Wang–Landau Monte Carlo software suite

The Oak–Ridge Wang–Landau (OWL) package is an open-source scientific software specialized for large-scale, Monte Carlo simulations for the study of materials properties at finite temperature. In this paper, we discuss the main features and capabilities of OWL, followed by detailed descriptions of building and running the code. The readers will be guided through the usage and functionality of the code with a few hands-on examples. This paper is based on a tutorial on OWL given at the 32nd Center for Simulational Physics Workshop on Recent Developments in Computer Simulation Studies in Condensed Matter Physics.

Hands-On, Heads-Up: Blending Cyber T&E with Data Science-Driven Training in Jupyter Notebooks

In an era of increasingly sophisticated threats to critical infrastructure, cybersecurity professionals must be more than just aware; they must be immersed, agile, and equipped to operate in environments where failure is not an option. Nowhere is this truer than in the nuclear sector, where cyber-physical systems, regulatory scrutiny, and insider threat potential demand a new generation of hands-on, technically fluent defenders. This paper presents a unified training approach that integrates Cybersecurity Test and Evaluation (T&E) with data science techniques using Jupyter Notebooks as the interactive lab environment. The program centers on a modular, scenario-driven curriculum designed to build not just knowledge but practical capability in the assessment and defense of radiation detection systems, firmware interfaces, and operational security postures.

Object manipulation in immersive virtual environments: Hand Motion tracking technology and snap-to-fit function

There have been recent efforts to use virtual reality and manipulation to train construction workers and inspection. However, there is a lack of research efforts comparing and evaluating virtual manipulation hardware for construction tasks. Moreover, the current practice of virtual manipulation has limited functionality to guide users with the placement of objects in virtual environments. To address these issues, this paper presents 1) a detailed case study that compares three types of manipulation hardware (image-based, infrared-based, and magnetic-based) for construction applications and 2) a snap-to-fit method that improves the VM through solving limitations of the advanced virtual reality interaction metaphors. The latter enhances the placement process for manipulation by comparing two models (e.g., scan and BIM models) for proper placement in assembly scenarios. Finally, the case study results show that magnetic-based systems outperform others in construction scenarios. Lastly, the snap-to-fit function was validated in terms of accuracy and time performance.

Hand me the franchise agreement: municipalities add another policy tool to their clean energy toolbox

A growing list of the more than 20,000 municipalities in the United States are considering pathways to achieve renewable energy goals. One emerging trend is for municipalities to incorporate energy objectives into their franchise agreements with an electric service provider. Franchise agreements are contracts between municipalities and utilities that grant the utility authority to serve customers in the municipality. In some cases, municipalities have negotiated renewable energy objectives into these agreements. It is still unclear how many municipalities have exercised this authority and to what effect. From a national dataset of 3500 franchise agreements, we selected five cities that adopted renewable energy or energy efficiency objectives into or alongside their franchise agreements for deeper analysis: Chicago, Illinois; Denver, Colorado; Sarasota, Florida; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Salt Lake City, Utah. We generated seven key takeaways for other cities considering this pathway to achieve their energy objectives. In summary, municipalities can leverage franchise negotiations to pursue both modest and ambitious clean energy goals (i.e. 100% renewable electricity). This study provides municipalities with critical insight on how they can use this potentially formidable tool to achieve their own energy objectives.
