Tailoring Elastic Properties of Silica Aerogels Cross-Linked with Polystyrene

The effect of incorporating an organic linking group, 1,6-bis(trimethoxysilyl)hexane (BTMSH), into the underlying silica structure of a styrene cross-linked silica aerogel is examined. Vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) is used to provide a reactive site on the silica backbone for styrene polymerization. Replacement of up to 88 mol 1 of the silicon from tetramethoxyorthosilicate with silicon derived from BTMSH and VTMS during the making of silica gels improves the elastic behavior in some formulations of the crosslinked aerogels, as evidenced by measurement of the recovered length after compression of samples to 251 strain. This is especially true for some higher density formulations, which recover nearly 100% of their length after compression to 251 strain twice. The compressive modulus of the more elastic monoliths ranged from 0.2 to 3 MPa. Although some of these monoliths had greatly reduced surface areas, changing the solvent used to produce the gels from methanol to ethanol increased the surface area in one instance from 6 to 220 sq m2/g with little affect on the modulus, elastic recovery, porosity, or density.

Observations on some acoustic methods used in studying the elastic properties of metals

An experimental setup is reported that permits very accurate measurements of the resonance frequencies of long cylindrical beams fixed in the middle and whose size can vary within wide limits. It also permits measurement of the width of the resonance curve. It is shown that the Poisson effect can be brought to light for relatively long beams and for relatively short beams. Poisson ratio, values obtained with this method argue in favor of using the low frequency region for determining elastic constants of solids.

Tensile elastic properties of 18:8 chromium-nickel steel as affected by plastic deformation

The relationship between stress and strain, and between stress and permanent set, for 18:8 alloy as affected by prior plastic deformation is discussed. Hysteresis and creep and their effects on the stress-strain and stress-set curves are also considered, as well as the influence of duration of the rest interval after cold work and the influence of plastic deformation on proof stresses, on the modulus of elasticity at zero stress, and on the curvature of the stress-strain line. A constant (c sub 1) is suggested to represent the variation of the modulus of elasticity with stress.

Pressure dependence of intermediate-range order and elastic properties of glassy Baltic amber

Amber is a unique example of a fragile glass that has been extensively aged below its glass transition temperature, thus reaching a state that is not accessible under normal experimental conditions. In this paper, we studied the medium-range order of Baltic amber by x-ray diffraction (XRD) at high pressures. The pressure dependences of the low-angle XRD intensity between 0 and 5 Å -1 were measured from 0 to 7.3 GPa by the energy-dispersive XRD. The first diffraction peak at 1.1 Å -1 and ambient pressure has a doublet structure consisting of the first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP) at 1.05 Å -1 and the second feature at 1.40 Å -1 . The peak position and the width of the FSDP increase as the pressure increases, while the intensity of the FSDP decreases. Below P 0 = 2.4 GPa, the rapid increase of the FSDP peak position was observed, while above P 0 , the gradual increase was observed. Below P 0 , voids and holes in a relatively low-density state are suppressed, whereas above P 0 , the suppression becomes mild. Such a change suggests the crossover from the low- to high-density state at P 0 . There is a close correlation between the pressure dependence of XRD and previously reported sound velocity results. The correlation between the mean-square fluctuation of the shear modulus on the nanometer scale and fragility in amber and other glass formers is also discussed.

Elastic properties of Apollo 14 and 15 rocks.

Ultrasonic P- and S-wave velocities of lunar samples 14310,72 and 15418,43 and P-wave velocities of sample 15015,18 were measured at room temperature to 5 kb confining pressure. The velocities of both igneous and breccia samples increased sharply over this pressure range. At low confining pressures, the shape of velocity-pressure curves of rocks is determined by the distribution function of crack aspect ratios. We suggest that analogue studies on terrestrial rocks having a wide assortment of crack parameters may be used to infer the nature of cracks in lunar rocks.

Elastic properties of plagioclase aggregates and seismic velocities in the moon

The compressional velocities of Apollo 16 gabbroic anorthosites in which the cracks have been closed match the seismic velocity of 7 km/sec in the 25 to 65 km depth region of the moon beneath the Imbrium Basin. The intrinsic velocities of plagioclase aggregates indicate that a velocity of 7 km/sec in a highly calcic gabbroic anorthosite is consistent only with a very small pyroxene component. Because mare basalts and gabbroic-anorthosites both have intrinsic velocities of 7 km/sec, the laboratory velocity data do not require a compositional change from basalt to anorthosite at the 25 km discontinuity. The laboratory velocity data only imply that the 25 km seismic discontinuity is one of microcrack density. The physical rather than the chemical or mineralogical state is constrained.

Elastic properties and fracture strength of quasi-isotropic graphite/epoxy composites

The layups of the studied laminates are (0, + or - 60) sub s, (0, + or - 45, 90) sub s, (0, + or - 30, + or - 60, 90) sub s (0, + or - 22 1/2, + or - 45, + or - 67 1/2, 90) sub s. The properties determined were tensile modulus, Poisson's ratio, bending stiffness, fracture strength and fracture strain. Measured properties and properties predicted using laminate theory were found to be in reasonable agreement. Reasons for data scatter were determined.

Tensile Elastic Properties of Typical Stainless Steels and Nonferrous Metals as Affected by Plastic Deformation and by Heat Treatment

A general discussion is given of the relationships between stress, strain, and permanent set. From stress-set curves are derived proof stresses based on five different percentages of permanent set. The influence of prior plastic extension on these values is illustrated and discussed. A discussion is given of the influence of work-hardening, rest interval, and internal stress on the form of the proof stress-extension curve.
